On this day in history…

“The tragedy of DANIEL PEARL's murder in Pakistan on February 1, 2002 carries that challenge into the 21st Century and makes even more vivid the human spirit that must prevail if we are to avoid the ultimate catastrophe of obliterating what Pearl eloquently described as ‘My Favorite Planet,’ an album adapted from his stories for the Wall Street Journal that carried him into the heart of darkness. As a light bringer he remains a steadfast symbol of hope and courage in the face of evil. Daniel Pearl was a musician as well as a journalist and his violin -- like his pen -- will be remembered as mightier than the sword, for they have outlasted his shortened life.” ~ Ross Altman.

√  CD REVIEW: GROOVY REDNECKS, “TAWDRY TALES,” released in October 2013

The GROOVY REDNECKS are rarely acoustic. Their trademark is hardcore honky-tonk outlaw country, and their new album brings the band's first recorded batch of new songs since 2006. They've been together 22 years, during which they've been named as "best band" by publications that they've outlasted. They've opened for big stars, including Leon Russell, Junior Brown, Red Simpson, Freddy "Boom Boom" Cannon, David Allen Coe (5 times), and -- it's a shocker, considering the Rednecks’ image – they’ve even opened for Pat Boone.

The Guide is privileged that David Serby, respected trad / alt country artist, review this new CD.

***  ***   ***

by David Serby

I drove up to Lancaster and back today, blasting the new Groovy Rednecks record, "Tawdry Tales," all the way.

I passed a bunch of Chippies on the drive and if they thought I looked a little paranoid they were probably right because had they pulled me over I probably would've gotten a DUI from all the cheap draft beer and dope smoke pouring out of my speakers.

In person, the Groovy Rednecks (T.W. Tex Troester, Bob Ricketts, Ron Botelho, Gary Riley, Chris Kirshbaum, and Jim Doyle) are larger than life LA legends and I think the shadows they cast can sometimes hide the great songs.

If you like Johnny Paycheck and The Vandals and Hank Williams, Sr. and Elvis Presley and Suicidal Tendencies and The Eagles (the parts of The Eagles The Eagles stole from cooler bands than The Eagles) and David Allan Coe and Marty Robbins and The Monkees and ZZ Top and Lefty Frizzell and The Blues Brothers and John Anderson and Tom Waits and Bob Marley and Johnny Cash then you can find something to like about this record.

Tawdry Tales is a hung-over Hollywood Hillbilly melting pot posole – soul food - boiled up in the back of an unlicensed food truck, that’s parked in some junked up alley behind a seedy dive bar at 2:30 in the morning, and then slopped into dented tin bowls to be slurped up by hungry drunks and degenerates.

And if that don’t sound like the kind of country music that can only come from California I don’t know what does.

Thanks for the music, boys.

***   ***   ***

You can order the CD, or download 10 of the 11 tracks from "Tawdry Tales" that are available as downloads. Both options are at http://www.cdbaby.com/m/cd/groovyrednecks5

It’s “an evening of entertainment that some folks may say ‘just ain't right’” tossing together live musical comedy and otherworldly guitar hocus-pocus,” says Kevin Burton Smith, the venue’s booker.
+
He continues, “There'll be all sorts of magic in the air as the Palmdale Repertory Theatre, the talented troupe who have been providing quality family entertainment to the Antelope Valley community for over 30 years, grace our stage for the very first time, presenting a sneak peak at their upcoming hilarious musical review, ‘I Love You, You're Perfect, Now Change,’ which zeroes-in on the myriad ways our species, already not known for its mental stability, goes full-tilt gonzo when love rears its pointed little head. But be forewarned: the person you're laughing at may be you.
+
“And then, one of Butler's favorite musical performers, Goh Kurosawa (who also plays in the acclaimed fusion band Sharp Three) will be conjuring up a little magic of his own, with some dazzling guitar pyrotechnics. Seemingly unfettered by the bounds of music, gravity or even common sense, this astounding musician doesn't really play the acoustic guitar so much as possess it, seducing it like a hesitant lover at one point and then banging on it like it owes him money the next, and all points in between, coaxing out a jaw-dropping blend of flamenco, jazz, rock, samba, classical, world music, pop and some types of music that haven't even been classified yet.”

Their sound varies from the bright sound of twin banjos, or banjo/mandlolin duets, to the rich overtones of double guitar and mandolin-guitar classics, all accompanied by the warm, classic bass lines provided by Tom Lee. A singer and multi-instrumentalist with many years' performing experience throughout California and the West, Peter Feldmann has been presenting bluegrass, folk, string band, and related music since the early 1960s, and is known as the founder of the Santa Barbara Old Time Fiddler's Convention, and the original Bluebird Café in Santa Barbara, a music club highly influential on the Southern California Music scene. Peter's tribute CD to Uncle Dave Macon, Grey Cat On The Tennessee Farm, was named to the nation's Top Ten Bluegrass albums of 2005 by the Chicago Tribune. Peter was given the Music Legend Award by the Topanga Banjo•Fiddle organization in 2008. Peter promises that a banjo with a groundhog skin head will be used during the evening.

+
Strong drinks, no cover, free parking.
+
David Serby and the Latest Scam at 9 pm.
The Buttonholes (2 long sets or 3 shorter ones) 10:30 pm to closing.
+
"(David Serby) has credited Rockpile – The Nick Lowe, Dave Edmunds’ band – with the inspiration to make this roots rock/beat country double album. Which is part British Invasion, part twang but always vibrant and hook filled. Song like Amnesia and When Couples Fall In Love are testimony to that. Over the twenty tracks that feeling is reinforced. Some are closer to a country feel than others but whatever direction Serby takes the song he does it with conviction." -- Lonesome Highway.
+
"Playing catchy roots rock with an at times uncanny resemblance to an American Gerry Colvin, Serby’s a California singer-songwriter with a strong pop sensibility and a clear awareness of the power of ringing guitar that should appeal to those with the likes of the dBs, Matthew Sweet and early Tom Petty in their collection." -- Roots and Branches.
+
"Serby is so consistently good that even when he has the nerve to call his group The Latest Scam, you don’t at all feel cheated in any way. Instead, he’s just having a little fun with his music and image. Think of this as an unexpected wrinkle in the ever-evolving tapestry that is David Serby’s continually expanding style." -- The Examiner.
+
"Not only does David Serby have an affinity, a sort of undisputed empathy with the emotions of humanity; the desire to get deep down and dirty in the psychology of what drives us all, but his way of getting that affinity across is almost pure and full. He has that great skill of being able to hear without speaking, for listening with full attention and giving a song of great humour and emotion in return in the album David Serby & The Great Scam." -- Liverpool Sound and Vision.
+
"First class anti pop for those who don’t like the mainstream but aren’t too comfortable straying too far from it, this might be what Lou Reed could have sounded like if he took shock therapy on a regular basis. Fun stuff for the decidedly left of center taste." -- Midwest Record.
+
"David has one of those voices that is excellent in its subtleties – he doesn’t have to push the envelope or over-sing to convey his feelings with his natural pipes. The musicianship is tight and has enough high-end talent to make you notice within the confines of even the strongest songs." -- Music Morsels.
+
"What he wound up doing was cranking the amps to 11 with a rocking four-piece comprised of himself, Tree, bassist Greg Boaz (Dave Alvin, Tex & the Horseheads) and drummer Dale Daniel (Hacienda Brothers). The new tunes bolster Serby’s reputation as a literate wordsmith, and the heart-wrenching “Better With My Hands” (an older song that didn’t fit on either of his last two albums) stands as one of the most emotionally potent songs he’s ever composed." -- Pasadena Weekly.
+
"Vibrant, intriguingly textured and tantalizingly piquant, the venture is packed shoulder-toshoulder with hooks, intoxicating narratives, and an abundance of head-turning instrumental charms." -- DC Larson, Rebel Music.
