.
Today in history …

On this date in 1930, astronomer CLYDE TOMBAUGH discovered PLUTO, acclaimed at the time as the outermost of nine planets in our Solar System. Alas, in recent years, the party-pooper astronomer community demoted Pluto to some nebulous category of “other objects,” which still seems ridiculous, considering it’s a sphere with its own moon.

√  GUITARIST BOB CASALE DEAD AT 61

Famous as Devo guitarist

Feb. 18, 2014

If you're thinking, "Devo was never close to acoustic or Americana," you're right. But Guide correspondent Michele Marotta knew him, and she checked-in this afternoon to report his death.

Michele reports, "I just spoke to Sam, his daughter, and she is understandably upset. She's in school in Oregon, and in shock. She is 21... [and] she is over every holiday, and is one of the nicest girls (wow -she's an adult now) you could ever meet."

Michele says of Bob Casale, "He had health issues -- heart problems -- and that's what took him, according to his brother, Gerald."

She related, "Apparently Devo was going to get back together and tour. [When] I spoke to him a few years ago about 'Whip It,' the band's huge hit. He wrote it on a plane. He was dealing with some personal issues, and came up with the song, and 'whipped' the problem."

A post on the band's Facebook page from Gerald reads:

"As an original member of Devo, Bob Casale was there in the trenches with me from the beginning. He was my level-headed brother, a solid performer and talented audio engineer, always giving more than he got. He was excited about the possibility of Mark Mothersbaugh allowing Devo to play shows again. His sudden death from conditions that lead to heart failure came as a total shock to us all."

She sent us more from the WENN site:

"The Casales formed Devo in the early 1970s with brothers Mark and Bob Mothersbaugh and Alan Myers . The band had a string of new wave hits, including 'Whip It' and 'Girl U Want,' and have a cult following to this day.

√  “THE RISE AND FALL OF PENN STATION” PREMIERES TONIGHNT ON PBS

“American Experience,” the long-running, highly respected public television series that explores history and culture and how the two have combined to make us who we are, brings a show about the greatest lost landmark and what it meant then and now for historic preservation efforts in America.

Outside monumental Washington, D.C., Penn Station in New York City was the grandest building in America. Upon its completion on February 3, 1912 in “The Evening Sun” newspaper, the head of Columbia University's School of Architecture proclaimed Penn Station as one of the seven wonders of the modern world, and something that "people will admire for centuries to come." The station was demolished just over 50 years later.

Its loss will never be regained. We don’t build airports like that. We never will again build monumentally from stone like that. The station’s massive stone eagles are proud possessions of university campuses today, mere ornamental shadows of what they once adorned.

It took the shocking loss to greed and egotistical development to enable Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis to galvanize New Yorkers and save the smaller Grand Central Station, which narrowly escaped to become one of today’s key NYC landmarks.

"The Rise and Fall of Penn Station" premieres tonight, February 18th on PBS. It competes with primetime coverage of the Olympics. But we commend it to your attention.

√  HAL LEONARD RELEASES TWO NEW BOOKS ON ABLETON LIVE 9

“SOUND DESIGN MIXING, AND MASTERING WITH ABLETON LIVE 9,” and “PRODUCING MUSIC WITH ABLETON LIVE 9,” are new companion releases announced today, February 18, 2014, from Montclair, NJ.

One thing we love about attending the annual NAMM Show is the heads-up it provides about new products and, in this case, books to help you determine whether music mixing / production hardware / software is right for you, and to help you get the most out of it if you already own it. For many readers, this is a bit wonky. Others will find it insightful to help invest time and money.

“SOUND DESIGN MIXING, AND MASTERING WITH ABLETON LIVE 9,” is represented by the publisher as a book that “deepens, enlivens, inspires, and improves your tracking, audio production, and performance skills with Ableton Live 9.” From in-depth discussions of mixing and mastering that you would expect to learn in an audio production school, to inspiring recipes for audio magic and mayhem, this book is designed to help you find your way into a much larger musical world. Filled with audio-making and audio-mangling recipes, tips, and mixing and mastering techniques, it takes you far beyond the basics.

Author, mastering engineer, Ableton certified trainer and power user Jake Perrine inspires you to use Live 9 in a new ways and shows you how to improve the way you already use it. Striking a delicate balance of artistry and theory, he expands your creative repertoire for both the studio and the stage and demonstrates creative production techniques that help you get the most out of Ableton Live 9 for improvising with other musicians; sound design for music, film, theater, and games; composition; live looping; DJing; and, of course, mixing and mastering music. Along with audio samples, demo software, and insightful video tutorials, the accompanying DVD-ROM provides actual Ableton Live sessions that you can use to practice the powerful techniques presented in the text.

“Sound Design, Mixing & Mastering with Ableton Live 9” is $19.99,m and easy to order using Inventory #HL 00122311 ISBN: 9781480355118 (Width: 8.5" Length: 11.0" 176 pages, DVD-ROM included.)
______

Acoustic and roots musicians may find reading the publisher’s notes to be stand-offish, but if you’re aleady in with Ableton Live 9, or thinking of investing, you should keep reading. Being published as a companion release to the above is “PRODUCING MUSIC WITH ABLETON LIVE 9,” also shipping now.

The unique, groundbreaking, and incredibly flexible features in Ableton Live 9 are advertised as setting it “far apart from all other audio applications.” But the publishers choose to promote this book by saying, “Whether you're making beats, remixing, live recording, DJing, live looping, producing songs, or creating sound design, electronic music, or hip-hop, Producing Music with Ableton Live 9 provides extremely important tips and techniques designed to help you succeed.”

If all that catering to the rap-hip-hop-electronica crowd doidn’t send you screaming for youe banjo, more of the publisher’s promo is friendlier and more relevant: “Unlike other books about Ableton Live that read like a second manual, this book walks you through the features that you must understand in order to create an actual track from start to finish.”

The author, Ableton certified trainer Jake Perrine, provides the hands-on, expert guidance you can use to produce powerful music with Ableton Live 9, “Whether you want to DJ, make mashups and remixes, play with a band, or build epic dance anthems from scratch.”

A substantial appendix section offers discussions of important non-Ableton specific topics, including digital audio basics, components of a producer's studio, considerations when buying a DAW computer, and more.

About the author:
Jake Perrine, in addition to being an Ableton certified trainer, is the WarpAcademy.com curriculum director. His specialty is not Folk-Americana – he has been making electronic music for over 25 years. But, he has over a decade of experience teaching audio production at the college level. “So, not only does he know what he's talking about, he knows how to make sure you know what he's talking about,” says the publisher.

“Producing Music with Ableton Live 9” is  $19.99, and it’s easy to order using Inventory #HL 00122310 ISBN: 9781480355101 (Width: 8.5" Length: 11.0" 208 pages, DVD-ROM included.)

Since the beloved Zoey’s suddenly closed late last year, Ventura County has needed a Folk-Americana music venue. Granted, Zoey’s was almost at the beach, while Simi Valley is a long ways inland – and close enough to attract SFV peeps. Of course, the Guide will celebrate a good venue anywhere.

Monickers has the luxury of sharing the same facility with one of Ventura Country’s state-of-the-art recording studios, allowing us to be able to offer each performing act live studio-quality tracking of their audio, along with multiple-camera filming of the entire performance, which will allow Monickers to make available radio content of the shows, and / or live streaming.
