MID-WEEK goes FREE MUSIC in surround-sound! Plus, updates on festivals, concerts, club gigs, musical theatre, more, through the end of July 4th's closing weekend - June 20 2017 edition

.
.
If you're here to plan your weekend, this edition was rendered OBSOLETE by a newer one published late Friday, June 23. That one is at:

http://acousticamericana.blogspot.com/2017/06/weekenditudinal-adjustments-guides.html
__________

Now, here's this full edition as originally published, as an archived reference source...
___

THAT's different. We don't get to say "Where ELSE but in L.A." this time. That's because the French "Fete de la Musique" went global and L.A. is ONE of the many places, worldwide, that has enthusiastically adopted it. Here, it's brought home to the streets, corners, courtyards, nook, crannies, and venues of the City of Angels as "MAKE MUSIC LOS ANGELES!" Then, hot on its heels, comes another big festival, a full-spectrum cultural/musical fest that runs Thursday through Sunday and has its biggest activities FREE on Hollywood Boulevard.

ALL the CONCERTS, musical theatre, and other local events are in this edition, too.

In addition to what you're getting being here now? A fresh, full edition of MUSIC NEWS with previews and reviews and all kinds o' things is being wrangled from the pasture into the starting gate and will be along very soon.

June 20th is a day worth noting, commemorated worldwide

by Larry Wines

Today the real world intrudes on our realm of tuneful times, as we complain about it getting hot before the next round of festivals, and wonder how bad the traffic and parking will be "just because I want to go there."

Set that aside a moment. Because today, Tuesday, June 20, is the global "World Refugee Day." It was first declared in 2001, and the irony of that timing is astounding.

Today, 65.6 million human beings are refugees. That number is greater, by far, than at any time since World War II, when new nations and massive rebuilding programs had to be created to accommodate them. Today we have "austerity" instead of infrastructure building or even maintenance and repair programs to maintain what we inherited. That's sadly true throughout America and the Western world. Instead of things we can use to grow our economy, in the US, we have billions proposed for border walls. In France, we see public funding for periodic bulldozing of refugee camps that assures a permanent nomadic class whose kids are not being educated and will grow-up to be unemployable, regardless where they end-up.

Obviously the world is not doing all that well, either in (a) assuring stability for native-born populations or (b) making things better for these millions of refugees. And it's time to realize that refugees become refugees because of the economic and foreign and military policies of the US and our various ad hoc "coalitions of the willing," to use a 21st century euphemism for getting together to blow-up somebody else's cities. But rhetoric is one thing. Numbers are another. And they prove that it's worse than you can imagine.

A total of 189,300 refugees were resettled in 2016 out of more than 65 million. Period. Worldwide.

Europe takes in 17% of the world's refugees. Yet not everyone takes part. The Czech Republic has admitted 12 individual refugees. Some EU member states took none.

Africa takes-in more than anyone else.

The US admits almost NO refugees, despite the FACT that the overwhelming number of global refugees — all of them human beings, many of them minor children — have been sent fleeing for their lives by the direct effects of US policy.

Specifically, refugees exist in such overwhelming numbers because US foreign policy is dominated by militaristic aims and goals, together with the corporacratic desire to dominate oil. American foreign policy is tightly aligned with Wall Street's paradigm of maximizing profits regardless of what problems that causes. (London's, and especially Frankfurt's, banksters are part of that same paradigm, creating a nearly homogenized mosaic.) Thus we conduct proxy wars and sell record amounts of arms, armaments, military accoutrements, and both cyber-sophisticated and simply explosive hardware and ordnance. We sell these instruments of maim and burns and blood and death, mostly in places that are already in conflict — or places that have quickly proven, as a result of arms sales from US companies — to be readily convertible into blood-soaked flashpoints once massive amounts of weapons are introduced.

Even Qatar -- home to the largest US military base in the world outside of the US (and a massive British military base, as well) -- is suddenly being blockaded by a Saudi-led Arab coalition. While we continue to sell record amounts of arms to the Saudis, they use them to create refugees from Yemen, the poorest nation in the Middle East. And how long before rich Qataris become refugees because their food supply is cut-off by the Saudis? We should understand naval blockades to starve populations in their own countries, because a US Naval blockade surround Yemen's coast, in cooperation with the Saudi bombing of Yemen's people.

You can't dismiss it as the law of unintended consequences. We've been doing this stuff for the past sixteen years, sending streams of refugees into the Mediterranean and beyond, and we haven't learned a damn thing. Because it's profitable (arms sales) and gains geopolitical advantage (control of oil regions), we aren't likely to stop.

The insanity reaches everywhere. Ancient archaeological monuments are destroyed and looted, their treasures marketed to rich collectors, the money going to finance arms purchases by those who oppose US aims. Entire functioning societies are blown apart, their populations sent fleeing, as in the fragmentation of Iraq and the fractured factionalism of Syria.

And it is reliably simplified for the nation of the short attention span.

The reality of perpetual war is as lost in mainstream media's poster-child hyperventilated hyperbole (remember the boy in the back of the ambulance?) as it is buried in arms merchants' balance sheets. So long as everything is obfuscated and we are distracted from the malevolently exploitive political aims used to eclipse what should be the important point, we lose the human point -- refugees are people. They have kids, hopes, dreams, desires, aspirations, creativity, and everything else that makes us all human. Whether or not that is politically, culturally, or economically inconvenient.

One wonders how long it will be before our allies and friends around the world stop accepting all the refugees that we keep creating. Especially when they're beginning to see that we won't take any of those refugees, ourselves, and we have a knack for making more of them.

Will robots replace jobs, or complement and enhance existing roles in the various industries in the LA region? Sat, Jul 1: A Guide focus event...
7 pm "RAISE THE ROOF" — a perfectly-named music benefit for Ugandan Orphans, with performances by LORIN HART, BRAD COLERICK, CORRINA CARTER, BARRETT TAGLIARINO, & DAVE MORRISON, plus "various band-members," in Old Throop Hall at Throop Unitarian Church, 300 S Los Robles, Pasadena, CA.
* THIS is a MUST-READ SECTION: "The last fund-raiser Lorin was involved in was an attempt to raise enough money to buy a house (for the orphans). That proved unsuccessful. But the money raised was used instead, to buy a piece of ground and a whole lot of bricks and mortar. Julius and his volunteers have HAND BUILT an orphanage," reports Dave Morrison.
* More: "It (the orphanage) needs to be finished. The pressing need is for materials to finish the roof and install windows and doors before the rainy season begins in October."
* Still with us? "His organization is called SOT-Uganda. They are a small non-profit — very hands-on — and they provide food staples to a few dozen widow-headed families, do free monthly medical outreaches into the countryside, and support the above-mention kids with community and education."
* Julius Musenero, in Uganda, "is an AIDS-orphan who has grown up to become a father-figure to 150 younger AIDS/HIV orphans."
* "Most of the children are in foster homes, but Julius cares directly for the others — about 35 — who have not found permanent homes. They are currently in a rented house."
* At this special evening, an on-stage song circle will comprise the heart of the program, following brief sets by individual performers, including songs from their individual CDs.
* Bring a dish to share and whatever adult beverage you want; or just come and enjoy.
* "Give whatever you want to the fund" as your admission for the evening.
* This group of local musicians isn't new at this. They report, "Last year we got very person-to-person with Lauren and Rui Mesquita who run MozamBikes, and managed to place 27 sturdy work-horse bicycles with 27 families in rural Mozambique. No middle-man. No money disappearing into advertising and administrative costs."
* If it's hot, bring a small fan if you have one. And c'mon already — YOU'RE worried about going someplace comfortable when you want to help these kids?
* There's also a GoFundMe page for the Ugandan orphanage. "If you can't make it to the show, please drop over there and toss a few bucks into the hat," encourages Dave Morrison.

* Now, director Dan Fishbach and musical director Anthony Lucca bring it back. Marc Francoeur, Susan Kohler, Miyuki Miyagi and Michael Yapujian star in this powerful and bold theatrical experience that was a sensation when it opened off-Broadway in 1968. A prolific singer-songwriter, actor and director, Brel composed and performed literate, thoughtful and theatrical songs that generated a large, devoted following – initially in Belgium and France, and later throughout the world.
* This revue, conceived by Blau and Shuman FEATURES ENGLISH LYRICS and additional material by the pair and pays tribute to Brel's unique genius. In any language, his songs brim with flair, attitude and European sophistication, retaining their edgy vibe over half a century after they were written. While Brel is no longer either alive or living in Paris, his legendary vision of romance, humor and moral conviction endures. We're looking forward to this freshly revived production.

Fri, Jul 7, 2017:
5:30 pm WESTERN STANDARD TIME performs the FREE, all-ages, summer concert series in Levitt Pavilion at MacArthur Park, 2230 W 6th St, Los Angeles, CA.
* Don't expect a cowboy / western band. That's a stoic nope and a modern n'uh-uh.
* Western Standard Time has a longer name that appends the two words, "Ska Orchestra" — it's the world’s premier "Jamaican Jazz Orchestra" — and it's "DUKE ELLINGTON meets Jamaica: the big band jazz arrangements of the 1940s colliding with the sound of early Jamaica." So it's best discribed as a kind of innovative retro jazz — Jamaican jazz. And people are flocking to it, by the thousands.
* There are more than 20 world-class jazz musicians in a “standard” Western Standard Time performance.
* The band's featured performers include Grammy noms and winners, and some have performed on Oscar, Grammy, and Emmy television broadcasts, and/or played with international stars and on major motion picture soundtracks.
* Bring your favorite beverage and tasty snacks. Excepot no alcohol, and they mean it — the cops will bust you outta the clear blue.
* Bring a folding lawn or beach chair. If you sit on a blanket, you will not be able to see.
* Bring a jacket; nights still get chilly near even a small lake.
* Parking free is possible, but requires being innovative and walking several blocks.
* Best to ride the Red / Purple Line light rail to Westlake/MacArthur Park Station, and allow time to walk around the bottom end of the park, through the tunnel and into the side that's isolated by the elevated road; that's how you reach the band shell.

==========

As extensive as our recommendations are? That's really just a lil' rundown on bunches o' concerts, festivals and other events in California through the conclusion of the July 4th holiday.

There are HUNDREDS more FESTIVALS happening all over North America, and we describe 'em in the detail you need in the Guide's "ENCYCLOPEDIA FESTIVANICA" at: http://acousticamericana.blogspot.com/2017/04/2017-music-festival-guide-current.html

But that's it for our concert calendar. You just saw how massively inclusive it, and we just can't keep doing those. So we'll continue to report on events as MUSIC NEWS, and we do maintain the "Encyclopedia Festivanica." But comprehensive day-by-day lists of everything good enough to recommend? We're bidding that bon voyage again, and this time that ship is really sailing.

= = = = = =

Okay, we lied a little. We ARE taking time here — temporarily — to include a select few things (recommendations) after July 4th.

Ahead in the Guide...

THE COMING SUMMER...

We'll keep you updated on MUSIC NEWS, all the festivals that feature Folk-Americana and/or acoustic music, and we'll bring you plenty of feature stories on whose in the studio, who's collaborating or touring with who, and what they're working on. And we'll continue to bring you news of special events, along with some previews, reviews and select "picks" (the recommendations kind, not the kind you use on strings; we've never had any of those printed with our logo, though we would if someone wanted to sponsor that.)

That said... contrary to appearances the last month or so, we're really NOT going back into the daily music calendar bid'ness. But there is SUCH an irresistible bridge of tunefulness from all the spring weekends of festivals until summer heat abates them, so we ARE doing full-blown music calendars through the end of the July 4th holiday.

We all know that if you rely on corporate mainstream media for your supposed news, you'd miss all these things.

Along with 'purt near everything else we bring you.

It certainly does seem like Big Corporate Media only promotes and reports on soundalike pop pablum with incongruously unnecessary vocal gymnastics... we don't do that, and we wouldn't cover that stuff even if they didn't.

But the point is, big corporate media just plain refuses things and then claims those things are "non-commercial." (Which might explain why cable news, exclusively sponsored by Big Pharma ads, is so bad.) Big media certainly refuses to cover real organic acoustic music made without loops of electrocution sound effects — from Frankenstein's lightning storm or wherever they find that annoying stuff.

♪ The ACOUSTIC AMERICANA MUSIC GUIDE endeavors to bring you NEWS — and views of interest to artists everywhere — more specifically to musicians and the creative community and music makers and fans of acoustic and Folk-Americana music. That includes both traditional and innovative forms. From the deepest roots to today’s acoustic renaissance, that’s our beat. We provide a wealth of resources, including a HUGE catalog of acoustic-friendly venues (now undergoing a major update), and inside info on FESTIVALS and select performances in Southern California in venues from the monumentally large to the intimately small and cozy. We cover workshops, conferences, and other events for artists and folks in the music industry, and all kinds o’ things in the world of acoustic and Americana and accessible classical music. From washtub bass to musical spoons to oboe to viola to banjo to squeezebox, from Djangostyle to new-fangled-old-time string band music, from sweet Cajun fiddle to bluegrass and pre-bluegrass Appalachian mountain music to all the swamp water roots of the blues and the bright lights of where the music is headed now.
