Echo Park Rising is a neighborhood event in its 4th year that focuses on the music, creativity, diversity and small businesses of Echo Park. There are multiple stages and activities throughout the weekend located on the main routes of Sunset Blvd, Glendale Blvd, Alvarado Avenue and Echo Park Avenue and beyond.
+
Street parking is available in Echo Park. Metered parking lots are located on Logan Ave and Lemoyne Ave. Carpool, ride a bike, take public transportation, and never drive drunk.
+
Go in and out of the venues. It is encouraged. If a venue reaches capacity you’ll find a line and people will get in as others leave.
+
All-Ages event, though certain areas are 21+ (usually where alcohol is served). They have activities for all ages.
+
Lots of food purveyors to choose from, including a few food trucks in a designated area. There are several full service bars within the venues.

The event is presented by The Echo, Bedrock, DoLA, Taix, Golden Road Brewing, and SESAC.

Much of the ROOTS AMERICANA MUSIC will happen at the Echo, 1822 W Sunset Bl., beginning at 4 pm. It’s All ages. The Grand Ole Echo is proud to present a full weekend of the best and brightest of the Roots scene. They tell us, “We will be blasting music all day, cooking Cajun food (thanks to Bedrock LA) and bringing Echo Park a musical experience it won't soon forget.”

Jim Kweskin is probably best known as the key figure in the ’60s jug band revival, a singer and bandleader. But he also created one of the bedrock guitar styles of the folk revival, adapting the ragtime-blues fingerpicking of artists like Mississippi John Hurt and Pink Anderson to the more complexchords of pop and jazz. Jim Kweskin and the Jug Band was the original "Americana" band, playing everything from classic blues to hillbilly country, ragtime, jazz, and rock 'n' roll. Kweskin has maintained a remarkably consistent musical vision since his jug band days, continuing to explore traditional folk and blues with the sophisticated sensibility of a jazz musician and traditional jazz with the communal simplicity of a folk artist.

Alabama-born Juli Crockett is a bona fide Renaissance woman: singer, songwriter, playwright, theater director, undefeated professional boxer and amateur champion, ordained minister, Doctor of Philosophy, and leader of the alt-country/Avant Americana genre-defying band The Evangenitals, as well as the Crockett Sisters. (They’re the same band –you choose which name you prefer)

The teaming of Jim Kweskin and Juli Crockett is the happy collision of classic and contemporary Americana music. Together, Kweskin and Crockett performances are celebrations of virtuoso musicianship seasoned with humor and exuberance.

Luke Halpin is a renowned multi-instrumentalist. A master of the guitar and the mandolin, impressive on fiddle, banjo, and adept at nearly anything he picks up. Halpin draws inspiration from the likes of Sam Bush, Mark O’Connor and Tony Rice and holds his own in comparison. It’s a FUN FESTIVAL WEEKEND, as L.A.’s version of SXSW (as it was in its early days) returns – Fri, Aug 15, 2014

♪ THIS WEEKEND brings multiple music festivals. One is clearly asserting itself as L.A.’s potential answer to the Austin music scene, and even has the feel of a mini SXSW. Of course that means what you’ll hear is quite broad-ranging, but inclusive of roots-Americana and acoustic singer-songwriter fare. It’s “ECHO PARK RISING,” running Friday evening through Sunday, and it’s FREE.

Echo Park Rising is a neighborhood event in its 4th year that focuses on the music, creativity, diversity and small businesses of Echo Park. There are multiple stages and activities throughout the weekend located on the main routes of Sunset Blvd, Glendale Blvd, Alvarado Avenue and Echo Park Avenue and beyond.

Friday & Saturday: Events in many venues; the Main Taix Stage starts at 4 pm and has a 10 pm curfew; additional events throughout the neighborhood will go later.
+
Sunday: NO Main Stage at Taix; live music and activities inside many venues run noon –10 pm.
+
Street parking is available in Echo Park. Metered parking lots are located on Logan Ave and Lemoyne Ave. Carpool, ride a bike, take public transportation, and never drive drunk.

Go in and out of the venues. It is encouraged. If a venue reaches capacity you’ll find a line and people will get in as others leave.

All-Ages event, though certain areas are 21+ (usually where alcohol is served). They have activities for all ages.

Lots of food purveyors to choose from, including a few food trucks in a designated area. There are several full service bars within the venues.

The event is presented by The Echo, Bedrock, DoLA, Taix, Golden Road Brewing, and SESAC.

Much of the ROOTS AMERICANA MUSIC will happen at the Echo, 1822 W Sunset Bl., beginning at 4 pm. It’s All ages. The Grand Ole Echo is proud to present a full weekend of the best and brightest of the Roots scene. This festival is in a “premier shopping and dining destination” with free outdoor concerts featuring performances by leading pop, rock, jazz, soul and alternative artists.

FOOL’S GOLD is tonight’s headliner. And they epitomize why we hardly ever list “world music.” Within their genre, they are quite respected. But exactly what is that genre? Read on. Their major influence is South African, Ethiopian and Eritrean music, while lead singer Luke Top, who was born and raised in Israel, sings in Hebrew. Fool’s Gold is an Afro-pop band which formed in Los Angeles in 2006. The band rotates around Luke Top (real name Nativ Top) and Lewis Pesacov and also enlists friends and colleagues that include members of the bands Foreign Born and Glasser, former members of We Are Scientists, The Fall and a variety of visual artists.

BILLY JOE SHAVER is one of the few songwriters that Bob Dylan covers in concert, and to whose songs Waylon Jennings dedicated an entire album, “Honky Tonk Heroes,” considered the first Outlaw album. Johnny Cash called him "My favorite songwriter," and he recently served as spiritual advisor to Texas gubernatorial candidate Kinky Friedman, which makes him another kind of hero. Stephanie Bettman is an accomplished writer, singer, and fiddler: her lyrics are infused with wit and wisdom, poetry and insight. Vocally she draws comparison to the soaring soprano of Joan Baez and the plaintive emotion of Emmylou Harris. Meanwhile, her fiddling, which combines elements of bluegrass and jazz, is filled with influences from such masters as Stephane Grappelli, Byron Berline and Johnny Gimble. A former actress and trapeze artist, Ms Bettman is at ease in front of an audience and creates intimacy with her crowd no matter the size.

Luke Halpin is a renowned multi-instrumentalist. A master of the guitar and the mandolin, impressive on fiddle, banjo, and adept at nearly anything he picks up. Halpin draws inspiration from the likes of Sam Bush, Mark O’Connor and Tony Rice and holds his own in comparison. A dynamic and sensitive vocalist himself, the harmony blend he and Ms Bettman achieve is chilling and at times simply transcendent. Halpin has a long history in the music biz, having shared the stage with the likes of Merle Haggard, Lone Star and The Steve Miller Band (to name a few). His quirky sense of humor is a perfect foil to Stephanie’s dry witty presence.

As a duo, they have been a featured act at the Walnut Valley Festival in Winfield, KS along with musical heroes Byron Berline, Michael Martin Murphy w/ Pat Flynn, and Tommy Emmanuel.
