Halloween's Harmonious Haunts

.
Their glowing pumpkin is bigger than your glowing pumpkin... NASA announced today that Titan, the big orange moon of Saturn that is a frigid soup of organic chemistry and lakes, rivers, and rainstorms of liquid methane, also glows in the dark. Really! And just in time for Halloween. Read all about it, with accompanying images, at www.jpl.nasa.gov/news/news.php? release=2012-344&cid=release_2012-344
.

.
YES, it's Samhain, pronounced as sow (like "ow") -in, the name of the Celtic's original Halloween, and the Latin American Day of the Dead, and it is whatever it is that we have done with them, in our modern orgy of costumed little menacing beggars seeking sweets saturated with high-fructose corn syrup to stuff past plastic masks. Still, in the real world, things got a lot less scarey today as President Obama and New Jersey Governor Chris Christie forgot about elections and politics and focused on the quickest way to get government aid to victims of Hurricane Sandy.
+
Now maybe it IS okay to enjoy the fake horror of Halloween.
+
The Acoustic Americana Music Guide's most recent edition of our Spotlight Events lists a bunch of music happening tonight. But there's MORE.
+
If you haven't already carved your plans in the face of a pumpkin, here are a pair of musical Halloween parties, reported after our Spotlight Events edition was published. Happy haunting!

Shelter from the Storm: a tale and an artist's offer

.
We've corrected problems from earlier attempts to publish today's post. Please read it now that it is all here, as intended.
.
And all the music events are in the latest edition of the Acoustic Americana Music Guide 's Spotlight Events, available just below or in the sidebar at left, depending on which edition you are reading.

.
Hurricane Sandy's landfall "is so massive, so unlike anything we've seen before." That's just one of many similar news leads today. The hurricane will impact 60 million people from the Carribean to the Arctic Circle -- the entire eastern seaboards of the US and Canada, reaching far inland with flooding and even heavy snowfall, plus hurricane-force winds and full-moon high tides hitting the mainland, many islands, and ships at sea.
.
The news will be filled with tales of heroism and stupidity, of loss and the vital role of government in rescue and relief and recovery, and that will be the lead story for weeks or months in a dozen states and thousands of communities.
.
"The election will take care of itself," said President Obama in response to a reporter's question this morning. But states that use electronic voting or electrically powered machines may find themselves with no power on Election Day, next Tuesday.
.
Could we have imagined that climate change would assert itself in freakish weather at election time?
.
All of us can keep friends and loved ones in our thoughts and prayers, even as we may lose the ability to communicate with them for days or longer. And artists, producers, and presenters of concerts can start planning to do benefits to raise money to help those in places that will be hit hardest.
.
Meantime, we mentioned ships at sea. The editor found himself smacked with a point of tangency this morning.
.
News came -- buried amidst the flood of news (no pun intended): the tall ship HMS Bounty sank last night in the storm, off the coast of North Carolina. The editor has vivid memories of a good dinner and wine and athe surreal experience in the Captain's cabin of the Bounty, the gallery with the prominent windows across the ship's stern.
.
On the original Bounty, it was the prime space with plenty of light that was occupied by the ship's cargo, collected in Tahiti: breadfruit trees, proposed as cheap food to feed slaves in the New World. That history of the Bounty's mission that went unfulfilled because of the famous mutiny? It could still resonate and it did.
.
It was dinner for three, cooked by the captain's wife. They were a couple from South Africa, thoroughly charming until the issue of apartheid was breached. Sadly, but predictably, their beliefs were a product of the society there at the time they grew up.
.
That has always made that evening especially memorable. At least as much as what preceded dinner and singing sea chanteys and hearing their fiddle and guitar and Irish whistle before that conversation.
.
Yes, it was thrilling to go aloft, and to hear the Nova Scotia-built three-masted vessel creak while her wood hull adjusted to the undulating waves and the physics of masts trying to stay in the same place as the ship moved beneath them on the gentle waters of a Florida anchorage.
.
But that conversation, the reactionary, deep-seated, lifelong views on apartheid -- had electrical shocks going through my head as I was rowed back to the shore, and long after.
.
The captain and crew changed after that, more than once. But I always had my own sense of Mutiny on the Bounty, the 1962 MGM film for which she had been built.
.
Certainly, others have had different ways to relate to that 180-foot sailing ship. She has toured US ports for decades on an educational mission that has now ended with her loss at sea. And many saw her featured in Disney's weird "Pirates of the Carribean" movies.
.
Some will wonder why she was at sea with the hurricane know to be approaching. Ships always put to sea to weather severe storms. They could be crushed against the docks if they remained in port. (The key exception is to seek safe anchorage in a protected harbor, clear of anything the ship could hit.)
.
When the Bounty sank, she had a crew of 17 aboard. They donned cold-water survival suits and took to the lifeboats. The heroism of the US Coast Guard rescued 14 of the 17, one plucked from the sea. Three are still missing.
.
The editor is preoccupied today, thinking of mariners he has never met.
.

AN ARTIST'S OFFER, THINKING
OF CHILDREN IN THE STORM
.
Of course, others here on the West Coast are emotionally involved in the storm. Singer-songwriter and children's book author DARIN BENNETT is offering something to help those in storm-effected places (geographical or emotional). Here's his message ...
.
Darin says, "We are sending good thoughts to anyone who is affected by the storm. We know how restless the little kiddies and their adult counterparts can get - even if they are safe and dry in their homes.

"We would like to offer a FREE digital copy of 'The Trick or Freaks' to anyone who is expecting "Sandy" close to home, as she is a most unwelcome guest.

"Please send any number of e-mail addresses to: trickorfreaks@gmail.com

"We will send a pdf version of the book and the link to download the theme song.

"Feel free to forward this message to anyone you know who could use an indoor activity...or just a smile.

"We're happy to announce that we sold out of all of the handmade first editions of The Trick or Freaks! That said, the digital e-book is still available!"

"Wishing a safe few days to everyone.

Take Care,

SPOTLIGHT EVENTS • Acoustic Americana Music Guide, Oct 26-31, 2012

.
There are soooo many music events, and add this exciting lil' obscure one...
.
LATE ADDED ITEM, with the current complete edition immediately following, right here...
.
Sat, Oct 27,
the "Music Adventure of the Week,"
is high above Mt. Baldy Village:
6:30-9:30 pm The last "MOONLIGHT HIKE" BBQ and concert of the 2012 season brings singer-songwriter RON ELY to the Top of the Notch lodge, restaurant and bar in the high San Gabriel Mtns on Mt. Baldy.
+
It's one of the most unusual venues for music in Southern California, at the top of a ski lift, a journey up through the tall pines, into the sub-alpine zone that's too high for trees. Under all OTHER circumstances, it's an expensive ride on that ski lift, or an appreciable hike. But it's a FREE ski lift ride for this "dinner-and-a-show" event IF you contact Ron in time. He says, "I can get you passes on the ski lift, up, down, or both, but you have to NOTIFY ME BEFORE NOON SATURDAY. Just let me know the names and I'll notify the lift operator you're my guests." Let Ron know at ronely@altrionet.com.
+
Allow an hour's drive from L.A. or the SFV, plus 20-30 minutes for the spectacular ride on the lift. OR, hiking takes a minimum of an hour and a half for those in great shape, and substantially longer for everyone else. Plan to ride the lift down, either way. And bring warm clothes and a flashlight.
+
The BBQ is $16. Accepting Ron's offer for a free lift ride saves you the $16 the lift would cost you otherwise. So it's half-price from what others pay.
.

.
.
Now, here's the full edition, as published Friday:
.
.
Three quickies, to start this edition…
+
1) Two underpublicized EVENTS you need to note:
• Friday, October 26, 8 pm, GRAHAM NASH of CROSBY, STILLS & NASH plays a “BENEFIT FOR BRADLEY MANNING” at the Church in Ocean Park in Santa Monica.
• Sunday, October 28, 1 pm, is the FREE annual “DANIEL PEARL WORLD MUSIC DAYS” concert event in Santa Monica; it’s in the Guide’s Sunday FESTIVALS section.
.
=+=+=+=+=+=+=
.
2) One STATE-OF-THE-MUSIC quote that’s waaay too good to pass-up, comes from the editor of the “Alt Sounds Newsletter,” a publication devoted to the world of pop music. Really, you need to read this:
+
"… don't get me wrong, I know I'm nearing the big three-oh but I still know how to rave it up with the best of them, when I want to! The fact is, with the way 'dance' music is right now, or what is deemed as dance music these days, I actually don't want to! This sweep of generic electronica that is being thrust at us is boring. It's soulless and it fails to move me, or take me away to another place where I can dance and be free! Instead it leaves me feeling cold and wanting to stay in..."
+
That, from the editor of "AltSounds," a UK-based major online weekly e-newsletter of today’s contemporary pop music.
+
See? It ISN’T just us Folk-Americana-Music-types that find the current state of pop to be dreadful, and now you have a quote to stuff in the face of Big Music’s execs who only want to sign purveyors of sh-thump-revolving-door-rehab-pop-tart-du-jour soundalike drivel.
.
=+=+=+=+=+=+=
.
3) Brilliantly COMIC PR / GIG ANNOUNCEMENTS continue to issue forth from JOHN BRYANT of the bluegrass / new-fangled-old-timey-flavored string band MURPHY’S FLAW. Here’s the latest for their gig Saturday night, minus the photo of the crowd on the National Mall at the last Presidential Inauguration… you’ll have to imagine seeing that and reading the following from them…
+
[Photo Caption] “Murphy's Flaw, center, plays the annual Tierra del Sol Foundation Fall Festival in Sunland, CA last Saturday.”
.
“Patrons of the Arts:
.
“If we had been on our toes, we would have told you about the amazing Tierra del Sol Foundation Fall Festival that was held Saturday, Oct. 20.
.
“But things came up and other stuff happened, and we just didn't get the word out.
.
“But we did take these notes:
.
“We were magnificent.
.
“The crowd (estimated at 310,000 people) filled Tierra del Sol Foundation's campus to overflowing and it got so boisterous the National Guard had to be called in to restore order. There was only one night of curfew, though, after which things settled down.
.
“Several fans held up their children so that they could someday tell their children that they'd seen The Flaw. It was touching, in an historic way.
.
“You, however, don't have such constraints and can catch the next Flaw show, with only a fraction of the crowd, Friday at Froggy's Topanga Fish Market in the heart of Topanga.
.
“We'll leave the lights on and the tip jar out!”
.
[Their next gig is at 8 pm Friday, and listed in the Guide…]
.

He sings all the needed parts in the harmony trio and quartet numbers.

BILL BRYSON plays upright bass and does vocals. Where hasn’t this guy been? Bill has a long discography of bluegrass and country music. One of the most skilled upright bass players in the business, he's been with great groups that include THE BLUEGRASS CARDINALS, THE COUNTRY GAZETTE, THE LAUREL CANYON RAMBLERS, THE DESERT ROSE BAND, and BLUEGRASS ETC. He's a wonderful lead singer, and is in demand one as one of the best baritones today. He also plays guitar and minstrel 5-string banjo.

With roots in pop and jazz, Severin delights acoustic audiences with grooves not usually heard in folk circles, set amid stories of pirates and vampires, and even twisted love songs.”

NOW, on to tonight's live music scene:
.
We begin with some additional info on a show already listed...

Thu, Oct 25, a "SHOW-of-the-WEEK" pick:
7 pm monthly "AMERICANA MUSIC CIRCLE" brings performances tonight by TOM KELL, DAVID SERBY, and performing hosts, THE LAUREN ADAMS BAND, at Genghis Cohen in L.A. We let you know about it, and how good this event is, but we did not let you know how special TOM KELL is. So, let's do that now:
+
When Tom Kell came to Los Angeles in 1983 to complete a development deal with A&M Records, it was all about the songs... In 1985 when he signed a deal with Seattle–based Upper Level Records and subsequently released “Lonely Town” (a project spearheaded by J.D. Souther, and featuring background vocals by J.D. and Timothy B. Schmit of the EAGLES, including a duet with J.D.) and using fellow EAGLE Glenn Frey’s band, it was all about the songs… In 1989, when Tom signed with Warner Brothers Records (signed by Jim Ed Norman himself!) and had songs covered by Kenny Rogers and The Nitty Gritty Dirt Band, it was all about the songs.
+
That album, “One Sad Night," introduced us to “Lilly Butane, or some such fiery girl,” as Tom regaled us with the story of “One Sad Night In Kerrville." It was produced by Josh Leo and featured the likes of Harry Stinson, Michael Rhodes, Bernie Leadon, Dan Dugmore, Jeff Hanna, Bob Carpenter, and again Timothy B. Schmit and J.D. Souther.
+
In 1993, when legendary record label Vanguard Records was signing new artists for the first time in several decades, it was all about the songs…
+
“Blue Telephone," "Thunder and Lightning," “Drivin’ Alone," and “L.A. to Angeltown” continue in the Southern California songwriting tradition that Tom has so clearly defined through his own pen, establishing his own credentials and sound. Once again, “Angeltown” featured stellar musicians including David Lindley, Kenny Edwards, Bob Glaub, Russell Kunkel, Karla Bonoff, Wendy Waldman and Bob Carpenter.
+
For Tom Kell it has always been about the songwriting.
+
Tonight's performing hostess and series booker LAUREN ADAMS says, "From his earliest days as a country-rock pioneer on club and concert stages in his native Seattle and throughout the Northwest, to singing duets with John David Souther, Timothy B. Schmit and Valerie Carter, he has always been lead through his career by his songs. He writes with a unique sense of time and place, and sings with a voice so full of character and heart, that you feel as though you’re standing next to him, seeing the same images, breathing the same moment."
+
As Harry Stinson put it, “It sounds like Tom is sitting on his favorite couch, wearing his favorite shirt and singing straight at you.” Now, after several years away from the studio and stage, Tom returns with “This Desert City," an album so laden with hope and pain, rife with Los Angeles imagery, so full of talent and grace that the listener will wonder how he could have stayed away, even for a day .
