EXTRA EVENTS this week... July 30-Aug 4, 2013

.
It's an outstanding week for BLUEGRASS, with the show on Tuesday with RUN BOY RUN at the Coffee Gallery Backstage in Altadena (fully described in Saturday's complete edition), and the best outdoor bluegrass concert of the summer with LAURIE LEWIS and JOHN REISCHMAN, which happens Friday at the lovely Ford Amphitheatre (across from the Hollywood Bowl). That Friday show is detailed in this "Extra" edition of the Guide, so don't miss it.
.
But everything else that's happening is not in here. Only the ADDED events that are not in Saturday's edition are in this one.
.
So, whoa up, thar, pard. That latest FULL edition, published early Saturday, has many events reaching through this week and waaaay into the future (including events for TONIGHT, Monday) so it is VERY MUCH still relevant and useful. But additional events that strayed-in to the ol' corral (as always) weren't around to get branded then and cut into the herd -- and we don't want you to miss anything.
.
Hence, here's this lil' ol' Monday update has ONLY those late/extra events. (Surely it's the first of who-knows-how-many fresh news blasts this week).
.
So, here ya go, with just the late extras...

LATE ADDITION...
Thu, Aug 1, in Venice:
7-10 pm  "CONCERT FOR BANGLADESH" redux on the anniversary date of George Harrison's landmark original in 1971, is a charity benefit at The Talking Stick, 1411 Lincoln Bl, Venice.
+
Four decades ago, it was famine exacerbated by war. Now it's economic exploitation by rich Western corporate moguls who employ workers in dangerously unsafe workplaces. The results should have been preventable because they should have been predictable. Instead, the best we can do is help those in need after they have suffered horrifying tragedy.
+
Thus, tonight's "BENEFIT FOR FAMILIES OF VICTIMS OF THE RANA PLAZE BUILDING COLLAPSE & THE TAZREEN FASHION FACTORY FIRE." On this exact 42nd anniversary date of the original "Concert for Bangladesh," the proceeds this time support victims of the deathtrap buildings that housed garment-making sweatshops for top designer-label brands sold in the US.
+
The multi-artist evening will include highlights from the original concert, performed by host ROSS ALTMAN and guest artists that include Eric Charles, Dennis Davis, Jeff Gold, Andy Manoff, Carol McArthur, Smokey Miles, and Michael Simmons.
+
Americans pay a lot for clothes and shoes with trendy labels. Bangladeshis make sub-poverty-level wages to produce these products, often in unhealthy and physically dangerous workplaces.
+
Questions about the event? Email Greygoosemusic@aol.com
+
Suggested donation to attend the concert is $10 for the benefit, plus a one-drink or one-food-item purchase to support the venue.

LATE ADDITION...
Thu, Aug 1, in Altadena:
8 pm  MICHAEL KOPPY, a respected and acclaimed singer-songwriter, plays the Coffee Gallery Backstage, 2029 N Lake Av, Altadena 92675; reservations, 626-798-6236.
+
Michael says he's bringing FRANK LINDAMOOD, "an old pal who’s coming all the way from the Florida swamps."
+
Michael Koppy’s recent CD, "Ashmore’s Store," was named “The Best Album of 2012” by Country Music People magazine—the critic going on to write “and ‘All in the Timing,' is the best song this critic has heard in the past 30 years.”
+
Michael says, "Other writers have called the album 'stunning,' 'revolutionary,' and 'unprecedented in the entire history of popular music,'" though he does not identify the sources.
+
Another cut on the album,“Nineteen Years Old,” was the Number One Song on several South Carolina commercial AM stations for nine straight weeks earlier this year. Michael says, "It’s the true story of a love that never died, told him by the old man who lived it and loved her, over a couple of beers on a rainy afternoon in a little dive bar in Birmingham,Alabama."
+
Venue impresario Bob Stane says of Koppy, "He writes songs that actually say something—be they off-the-wall and playful, perhaps think 'Randy Newman writes for Hank Williams Jr.,' or serious and substantive."
+
His current tour started in Canada on July 18 and ends in Honolulu August 10.
+
Michael accompanies himself on six-string acoustic guitar, nine-string guitar, and harmonica. More at www.MichaelKoppy.com
+
PLUS,
FRANK LINDAMOOD has been called "an authentic and unaffected link to a different time in American music." A regular at the "Florida State Folk Festival," he lives in a place he built by hand (and without indoor plumbing), at the end of a dirt road deep in the turpentine piney woods of the Florida Panhandle, not too far from a little crossroads town called Sopchoppy.
+
A legitimate throwback and connection to an earlier era in American music, Frank’s original songs are mostly either religious-themed or about actual events. This will be his first time playing more than a hundred miles from home—and quite possibly the only time you’ll ever be able to see and hear him on the Pacific Coast. Frank plays banjo, guitar, and resonator guitar. More in him at www.reverbnation.com/FrankLindamood

Fri, Aug 2;
not music but worth knowing,
in Topanga:
7:30 pm "FIRST FRIDAY FILM NIGHT" sponsored by the Topanga Peace Alliance presents "The Invisible War" at the new Topanga Library, 122 N Topanga Canyon Bl, Topanga 90290.
+
"The Invisible War" is an Academy Award nominee in 2012 and one of Time Magazine’s "Ten Best Films of the Year." From Oscar®-and Emmy®-nominated filmmaker Kirby Dick,"The Invisible War" is a groundbreaking investigative documentary about one of America’s most shameful and best kept secrets: the epidemic of rape within the U.S. military.
+
The film paints a startling picture of the extent of the problem. Today, a female soldier in combat zones is more likely to be raped by a fellow soldier than killed by enemy fire. The Department of Defense estimates there were a staggering 22,800 violent sex crimes in the military in 2011. 20% of all active-duty female soldiers are sexually assaulted. Female soldiers aged 18 to 21 accounted for more than half of the victims.
+
Focusing on the powerfully emotional stories of rape victims, "The Invisible War" is a moving indictment of the systemic cover-up of military sex crimes, chronicling the women’s struggles to rebuild their lives and fight for justice. It also features hard-hitting interviews with high-ranking military officials and members of Congress that reveal the perfect storm of conditions that exist for rape in the military, its long-hidden history, and what can be done to bring about much-needed change.
+
The Topanga Peace Alliance screening features a vegetarian snack potluck (no alcohol) at 7:15 pm, with the film screening at 7:30 pm. A discussion follows the screening.
+
Parking is available under the library and the event is ADA compliant with elevator access and headphones for those that need a little extra volume.

LAURIE LEWIS is considered “one of the preeminent bluegrass and Americana artists of our time” by the International Bluegrass Music Association. The Grammy® award-winning singer-songwriter uses traditional instruments and her command of the genre to create a sound that is often contemporary.

Festival TICKETS / EATS:
+
A very reasonable $13 (advance purchase price) gets you a General Admission . But that's ONLY a general admission, no crawfish to eat, and you're on your own for food. (Advance online purchase price; it's $15 on-site.)
+
But, as good as the music and general hoop-la are, you don't want to settle for just getting in to this festival. Read on.
+
For $28, you get a One-Day General Admission with a "CRAWFISH FEAST" served by Bristol Farms, and it includes 2 to 2-1/4 lbs. of fresh live steamed crawfish, red baby potatoes, corn on the cob and dipping sauce. (Advance online purchase price; it's $35 on-site until it's sold-out.)
+
For $35, you get a One-Day General Admission, plus the "CRAW BUCKET FEAST," served by Bristol Farms. This feast includes 3 lbs. of fresh live steamed crawfish, red baby potatoes, corn on the cob, and dipping sauce. (Advance online purchase price; it's $48 on-site until it's sold-out.)
+
HOW MUCH FOOD IS IT?
Crawfish Feast platter or Craw Bucket Feast, it's A LOT of food. And if you want to get serious, it takes a lot of delectably enjoyable time to eat it. What does that mean? A parent and a young kid can joyfully share a "Crawfish Feast" platter. Two adults can happily share a "Craw Bucket," and a couple with a young child can buy one admission-with-bucket and just two additional admissions. A dating couple could share a "feast" platter and hit the food court for more and different cuisine (see below), or a couple can fill-up sharing a bucket, spending at least an hour-and-a-half busily eating it. But if teenagers are involved and you expect to share a platter or even a bucket, they will develop a sudden love for crawfish and devour everything, leaving you an 18-inch high pile of shells and nothing else.  Finally, if you have your own crab / lobster cracking tools, take them. Crawfish have thinner shells and are smaller, but tools can make it easier. So plan a bit, and this will be a highlight of your summer.
+
Special admission discounts and packages are available, but only at the festival's website.
+
In addition to the crawfish, there is an extensive "International Food Court," featuring New Orleans inspired cuisine, Café du Monde-style chicory coffee and beignets, sweet potato pie, pecan pie, alligator-on-a-stick, catfish, and more.
+
We must emphasize: to assure that you will enjoy CRAWFISH at the CRAWFISH FESTIVAL, you need to purchase it in advance, both to save a lot of money and to sure you get yours. It's wonderful, everybody knows it, and it sells-out.
+
The festival is family-friendly, and runs Saturday, noon–11 pm, and Sunday, noon–10 pm.

WORKSHOP for ARTISTS,
in Altadena:
4 pm "GUITAR WORKSHOP: Developing a Powerful Practice Routine" with master guitarist and composer KEN BONFIELD at the Coffee Gallery Backstage, 2029 N Lake Av, Altadena 92675; reservations, 626-798-6236.
+
Bonfield leads a 90-minute workshop for guitarists and musicians of any level. This is an in-depth look at the routines and strategies he has employed to overcome injury and learn new playing techniques. He includes playing in a multitude of alternate tunings, playing slide guitar, and most recently playing 11-string Harp Guitar.
+
All mastered without lessons.
+
Bonfield will share with you how you, too, can be your own best teacher. In this workshop,Bonfield will show guitarists, or musicians on any instrument, how to set reasonable goals while sharing time-tested approaches to daily practice that will have you reaching your goals faster than ever.
+
If you feel like learning anything new is a tough slog, or if you've found yourself plateaued in your playing, this workshop msy be just the thing for you. While you won't go home with a cool new lick, you will leave with the information to develop a plan to learn whatever it is YOU want to learn.
+
He adds, "As a bonus, after you've adopted the Bonfield approach to practice for 30 days, there's a great chance you'll be playing what you've already been playing better than you ever."
+
Bonfield does this 90-minute afternoon workshop, and an evening concert at 7 pm. (See 7 pm listing.)
+
The Workshop fee is $25; tickets for the concert are $20 and include the new CD. Combined tickets for both the concert and workshop are $40 and include Bonfield's new album, "Legacy."
.
++++++
.
LATE ADDITION...
Sat, Aug 3, in Altadena:
7 pm "ARTISTRY OF THE GUITAR" with Boston-based American Fingerstyleguitarist master guitarist Ken Bonfield, is a solo concert at the Coffee Gallery Backstage, 2029 N Lake Av, Altadena 92675; reservations, 626-798-6236.
+
"Legacy," Bonfield's fifth solo CD and his 7th overall, is a blend of old and new songs performed entirely solo on a variety of instruments he brings on the road. They include his newly-acquired custom Carruth guitar (http://www.alcarruthluthier.com); a 2007 baritone guitar that Bonfield likens to a plucked cello; a 2010 11-string Harp Guitar that has a standard guitar's 6 strings plus an additional 5 'sub-bass' strings that allow Bonfield to play bass and guitar at the same time; and his 2012 Small Jumbo Carruth 'Green' guitar made entirely from sustainable North American hardwoods. He is an advocate of sustainable woods, like walnut, cherry, persimmon, and maple, as well as making use of salvaged wood, such as the Redwood top on his guitar acquired in the mid 1970s from a 12-foot-tall stump -- the tree itself was originally 'harvested' in the late 1800's.
+
Thus, the album name, "Legacy," has meaning. Produced by New England master engineer Tom Eaton, it was fully funded through a Kickstarter "crowd funding" campaign by Bonfield's fans.
+
In the spirit of the way it was funded, everyone who pays for a concert ticket gets a free CD. As venue impresario Bob Stane says, "That's a pretty good deal."
+
Bonfield does a 90-minute afternoon workshop at 4 pm and an evening concert at 7 pm, both here today. (See 4 pm listing.)
+
Bonfield's 90-minute workshop for guitarists and musicians of any level on Saturday afternoon is called "Developing a Powerful Practice Routine," and it's at 4 pm.
+
Tickets for the workshop-only are $25. Tix for the concert-only are $20, and include Bonfield's new CD "Legacy."  Combined tickets for both the concert and workshop are $40 and include Bonfield's new album, "Legacy."

Sun, Aug 4, in Altadena:
7 pm THE UKELELE ORCHESTRA OF THE WESTERN HEMISPHERE, a big outfit with small instruments, plus THE SINGER & THE SONGWRITER duo, at the Coffee Gallery Backstage, 2029 N Lake Av, Altadena 92675; reservations, 626-798-6236.
+
Start thinking "Alt Uke" and get ready for something entirely different: The Ukelele Orchestra of the Western Hemisphere. Direct from Silverlake and locally grown, there's nothing quite like this 15-20 ukelele “wall of sound” -- at least not in the Southern California area of the Western Hemisphere.
+
But don’t show up expecting a repertoire of lilting Hawaiian melodies. Instead, be prepared to hear unique arrangements and mash-ups, with songs ranging from Radiohead, and David Bowie, to yes, even Led Zeppelin and Dolly Parton.
+
Plus,
THE SINGER & THE SONGWRITER, the original duo of RACHEL GARCIA & THU TRAN. "The Singer and The Songwriter is an L.A.-based duo that blends folk and jazz to create a catchy, modern sound inspired by vintage styles." They have played at The House of Blues, "The Eagle Rock Music Festival," and Silverlake Lounge, and are currently working on their debut full-length album. Oh, and this original duo are former members of The Ukelele Orchestra of the Western Hemisphere.
+
Venue impresario Bob Stane says, "Join the resurgence of the ukulele, the happiest instrument in all the hemispheres. See what the buzz is all about this group. Just show up – and you will leave way happier!"

MORE is on the way. First, we must equip the drovers with new riatas and assemble them in their chaps to load the baying cattle into the stock cars and feed and water the dogies. Then we must assemble the loaded stock cars into the train, and coal and water the locomotive, and call the engineer and conductor, and attach the caboose. See what we do for your musical needs? And you thought we just got to blow the whistle, ring the big brass bell, and wave.

From the west side, Yosemite Regional Transportation System has convenient stops within the June Lake Loop. YARTS provides affordable and comfortable transportation to and from Yosemite National Park and connects to other Buses, Trains and airline services in Central California.

+
As soon as you learn that one of these artists has toured as an opening act with WILLIE NELSON and opened for both WAYLON JENNINGS and JOHN SEBASTIAN, you might get the idea you should get to this show.
+
Named after a traditional foot stomping fiddle tune, Sugar in the Gourd is certainly every bit as edgy and fun, but has the added depth of beautifully constructed original songs that encompass topics from trains, to drinking, to love and redemption, all the way to God. The four women who comprise this delightful Americana./Roots style band, have combined their diverse backgrounds and songwriting talents to form a sound that is as unique as it is captivating. Whether they’re singing an old blues, an original swing tune or an Appalachian style murder ballad, you’ll hear three part vocal harmonies that will melt your soul, along with world class musicianship on violin, guitar, mandolin, upright bass and banjo.
+
Sugar in the Gourd was selected as an official showcase band for the 2012 FAR West conference, and have been playing consistently around the Los Angeles area in many of the top venues including McCabe’s, The Coffee Gallery, and The Echo, as well as a four month residency at The Witzend Live in Venice. They have also been featured live on KCSN’s “Tangled Roots” program.
+
Merrily Weeber, on vocals and guitar, has toured as an opening act with WILLIE NELSON and also opened for both WAYLON JENNINGS and JOHN SEBASTIAN. She's been the featured vocalist for various songs in the hit sitcoms “Third Rock From the Sun” and “That Seventies Show”. She has co-written with Jack Tempchin, (who penned the Eagles' “Peaceful Easy Feeling), Janis Ian, and Lloyd Price.
+
Aubrey Richmond, on vocals and violin, has performing professionally since she was a young girl. She has won numerous championships over the years, as well as maintaining a highly successful international career as a top studio and touring musician.
+
Lisa Salloux, on vocals, mandolin, guitar and occasional bass, was born into an entire family who played bluegrass. She has been an accomplished musician , songwriter and vocalist since she was a teenager.
+
Lynn Shipley Sokolow, on upright bass and banjo, is also a published poet and lyricist selling over half a million records. In addition, she is a former entertainment manager who has worked with Geffen recording artists Quarterflash, and Berlin, with several gold and platinum albums on her wall.
+
PLUS,
+
WHAT ABOUT NETTIE brings 23 year old Nettie Rose, songwriter, singer and actress, with original songs reminiscent of classic hits. She recorded her first song when she was only eight years old. Just one year later she met Fred Sokolow, who played with the likes of Jerry Garcia, The Doors, and countless others. He taught her how to play guitar, and later became her first writing partner.
+
"I've had the privilege to meet lots of people and often I turn them into characters in my songs," said Nettie. Her debut album is aptly titled People I Know. The CD Features several songs co-written and produced by three- time Grammy Award winner Anthony Kilhoffer (Kanye West, Rihanna, Kid Cudhi), and an impressive group of musicians including organist Spooner Oldham (Neil Young, Bob Dylan), drummer Bryan Owings and bassist Dave Roe (Johnny Cash). Nettie cites influences from Phil Ochs to Emmylou Harris to poet John Keats. Will Jennings said of Nettie's songs, "She's got some special indefinable magic to her lyrics that connect with the common man in a universal way. She has a gift that's quite remarkable."
+
She is the daughter of legendary music publisher Lane Freed, President of Rondor Music, and Rock archivist Judith Fisher Freed, and the granddaughter of the iconic ground-breaking disc jockey Alan Freed, who is credited for coining the phrase "Rock 'n' Roll."
+
Admission to this show is “pay-what-you-want,” unusual at this venue, and unusual for such accomplished musicians.

Sat, Jul 27, in Altadena:
7 pm STRING MADNESS plays the Coffee Gallery Backstage, 2029 N Lake Av, Altadena 92675; reservations, 626-798-6236.
+
Bob Stane says, “A wow group. Sophistication and humor and a stunning display on all instruments. Solid! A ‘must see.’ Pretend I whispered into your elbow after a show and told you, ‘see, and hear, String Madness.’ Do it, please. Guaranteed. Extremely good deal at $15. A gift. Bring guests and out of towners and those folks you want to seduce into being slaves to The Coffee Gallery Backstage. Show no mercy.”
+
String Madness delivers string band music from Bach to Bop -- and Beyond. Three hot instrumentalists – mandolinist Bob Applebaum, and guitarists Mitch Greenhill and Peter Spelman – pool their talents here. The group has carved out a repertoire of original compositions, string band tunes, and jazz scripture from the Books of Django and Miles. Improvised solos interweave with arranged harmonies and unison lines to propel an exciting musical exploration.
+
Bob Applebaum is a nationally recognized mandolinist with over forty years professional experience in stage, recording, television and film work. He has performed and recorded with the likes of Bela Fleck, John Fogarty, Tony Trischka, Peter Wernick, Byron Berline, Stewart Ducan, Richard Greene, Mason Williams, and Sam Bush. Bob’s CD “All the Way Home” was praised by Bluegrass Unlimited as "the contemporary bluegrass album of the year…” He is coauthor of "Fretboard Roadmaps for Mandolin," published by Hal Leonard.
+
Mitch Greenhill recorded two solo albums for Prestige, now re-issued on Fantasy as "Shepherd of the City Blues," and two albums in collaboration with Mayne Smith. The Boston Globe hailed his "movement and drive and touch that anyone who has ever coped with a guitar cannot but envy." He has produced an array of recordings, including a Grammy-winner for Doc Watson, and has composed and designed music and sound for regional theater, where he has received several Drama-Logue awards, and on Broadway. Mitch has appeared on screen in "The Long Riders" and "Safe."
+
Peter Spelman's extensive history as soloist and band leader includes stints in both Northern and Southern California. Like Bob, Peter cut his eyeteeth in the Greenwich Village musical cauldron, then moved west. He composes much of String Madness's repertoire.
+
In the words of the Los Angeles “Wicked Good” Newspaper, String Madness is "a sonic lollapalooza, a mystical kinship of passions, a mind-meld of great empathy, a riveting feast of music....They swing, they dig deep, they dazzle, and they mean it all….Not to be missed! "

7:30 pm JOHN BATDORF plays the Gelencser House Concerts series in Claremont 91711. Reservations get directions at 909-596-1266 or by email at singfolk@yahoo.com
+
JOHN BATDORF, musical partner with James Lee Stanley in “All Wood & Stones II,” the most downloaded-to-radio-stations CD in the world in May. He had hits way back when with BATDORF & RODNEY, and since his return to touring in the mid-double-aughts, his songwriting and performing chops – and that wonderful singing voice – are widely recognized as first-rate. Some may ask, what is it about the qualities of John Batdorf that set him apart from other excellent singer-songwriters? It’s his vulnerability, his complete opening the door to his heart. John invites the listener into his soul and shares a couple hours, open and trusting as he sings of love and hope: transforming despair to hope, hate to love and fear/ignorance to tolerance/acceptance. We share his understanding, forgiveness and are filled with compassion when the song is done. When you hear John sing live for the first time, you'll understand why his music has meant so much to his fans that have now spanned nearly four decades. “There is in the California Philharmonic’s concerts a very welcoming lack of

Sat, Jul 27, in Pasadena:
8 pm MILKDRIVE brings “progressive bluegrass” from Austin to the “Pasadena Folk Music Society” (formerly Caltech Folk Music Society) series in Beckman Institute Auditorium (“Little Beckman”) at California Institute of Technology in Pasadena 91106; advance tix, 626-395-4652.
+
This is your last chance to see them on their current national tour.
+
Jazz-grass band MilkDrive features award-winning instrumentalists Brian Beken on fiddle and lead vocals, Noah Jeffries on guitar and harmony vocals, Dennis Ludiker on mandolin and harmony vocals, and Matt Mefford on double bass. But awards reveal nothing about the Austin-based string band’s exhilarating sound. Fueled by equal parts tradition and innovation, MilkDrive delivers a distinctive acoustic experience that crosses genres, geographies, and generations.
+
The band’s much-anticipated sophomore studio album, “WAVES,” produced by Bil VornDick, was released in June 2012. It showcases the band’s sophisticated arrangements and fierce musicianship with a number of original compositions, and it notably features guests Noam Pikelny (of Punch Brothers) and Futureman (of Bela Fleck & the Flecktones).
+
Dennis Ludiker, Brian Beken and Noah Jeffries met as youngsters competing in the prestigious “National Oldtime Fiddlers’ Contest” in Weiser, Idaho. Eventually they migrated to Austin, where they toured with an eclectic mix of bands and honed their songwriting chops before joining up with bass player extraordinaire Matt Mefford and forming MilkDrive.
+
In June 2009, the band recorded and released a live album, “MilkDrive Live ’09,” which spotlights the band’s vigorous picking technique and charismatic writing style. Their debut studio album, “Road From Home,” released in April 2011, combines haunting ballads with their signature instrumentals – “achieving a rootsy feel with a sophisticated edge,” as reviewer Graham Robertson put it, adding that it’s “A fantastic canvas for solo work.”
+
Andrew Dansby of the Houston Chronicle calls the MilkDrive repertoire “a virtuosic blast of bluegrassy string-band music.” With labels that range from jamgrass and nu-folk to redneck gypsy jazz, the band has built a following that’s as funky and friendly as they are. The group plays festivals from coast to coast every year, with stops in between at Colorado’s beloved “RockyGrass Festival” and at home at the “Austin City Limits Music Festival.”
+
They play only three Southern Cal shows during their formidable national tour, and this is the final date.

The great L.A. noir troubadour returns to McCabe's for one show. Venue booker Lincoln Myerson says, “It's been a long and influential road for the songwriter-guitarist and original WALL OF VOODOO vocalist. His darkly humorous and richly cinematic musical tales of the ironies inside the American Dream have been compared to other classic songwriting iconoclasts like Randy Newman, Tom Waits, Johnny Cash and even hard boiled mystery writers like Raymond Chandler and Jim Thompson, as well as twisted film makers like David Lynch and Quentin Tarantino.”
+
The San Francisco Chronicle said, "He conjures Burroughs, Bukowski and Brecht," while LA Weekly has called him "the Nathaniel West of rock." He's played McCabe’s a few times in recent years, and Myerson says, “each show has been richly rewarding, and on many levels.”

The Guide has raved about Cal Phil's concerts in both indoor and outdoor venues. Here are a couple of other comments.
+
“I would compare Cal Phil under the direction of Victor Vener to Leonard
Bernstein and the New York Philharmonic and Arthur Fiedler and the Boston
Pops. All three... flawlessly combine classical and popular music.” - Dennis Karmazyn, Internationally-Renowned Cellist.
+
“There is in the California Philharmonic’s concerts a very welcoming lack of
snobbery that brings together popular and classical without having to pander. They
do what they do—and they do it very well.” - Ted Ayala, Crescenta Valley News.

+
Tonight was to have been JOHN BATDORF & JAMES LEE STANLEY touring their new album, "All Wood & Stones II," acoustic interpretations of Stones hits, part deux. It was the most downloaded album in the world by radio stations in May. But don’t despair. THIS is a fine show and not to be seen as “a replacement.”
+
Acoustic duo Mark Lemaire and Twilight have taken the tradition of guitar and interlocking harmonies to a unique place. Bob Stane says “I was fascinated by ‘Zanzibar Sands’-- it has a unique voice and story line. After his main set ended, I did something I have never done in 50 years of putting on shows: I asked Mark if he would sing it one more time. As he did, I enjoyed its uniqueness all over again.” Mark Twang of Folkways Recordings says: "It was an impeccable performance. Never have I witnessed such control of the steel stringed guitar’s sound. This was a flawless show."
+
Mark has shared the stage with folks like Tracy Chapman, Stefan Grossman, and Maria Muldaur. This summer, Mark and Twilight (Cindy van Empel) are playing shows from New Mexico and Texas to Vermont and the Northeast, as well as here in Southern California. Mark also plays impeccable guitar solos. Here are two videos for your pleasure. More at http://www.marklemaire.com/

+
"Lemaire has received critical kudos from the industry as well as his musical peers. Performing with van Empel, the blend of voices adds a perfect exclamation point to Lemaire's virtuoso guitar playing and songwriting." - Pasadena Weekly

PLUS,
This booking occasioned a special feature story and “Ticket Alert” a week ago Monday in the Guide. Here’s that story – you want to be there.
+
They're a hot bluegrass / old-time band who've TWICE performed on radio's "A PRAIRIE HOME COMPANION." They won the ultra-prestigious "Telluride Bluegrass Festival Band Contest." And they are playing only ONE Southern California show -- in a small venue -- during their national tour. This'll sell-out QUICKLY, so jump on it.
+
★ RUN BOY RUN is an exciting young band from Tucson, Arizona. They have a special gift for writing original songs in the classic old time / bluegrass styles, and feature a unique instrumental mix of twin fiddles, mandolin, cello and bass, along with three female lead singers with beautiful harmonies.
+
Garrison Keillor, host of "A Prairie Home Companion," didn't just book them twice; he raves about them: "Hot instruments and beautiful, sweet harmony singing - that's all you need in the world today! When I hear Run Boy Run, it all comes back to me, why I started doing that show back then. I hope they go on forever."
+
Venue impresario Bob Stane says, "Existing in the tension between tradition and frontier, Telluride Bluegrass Festival Band Contest winner and Two Time Prairie Home Companion guests RUN BOY RUN truly exceeds the sum of its parts as touches of classical, jazz, and folk express themselves through the old-time core of the band’s unique sound."
+
The band's members include two sets of siblings. Brother and sister Matt Rolland (fiddle & guitar) and Grace Rolland (cello & vocals), combine with sisters Bekah Sandoval (fiddle & vocals) and Jen Sandoval (mandolin & vocals). The band is completed by Jesse Allen (upright bass).
+
Called by Paste Magazine, "one of the top ten Arizona bands to hear now," Run Boy Run self-released their full-length album "So Sang the Whippoorwill" in March 2013 to critical regional and national acclaim.
+
From winning the band contest at "Pickin’ in the Pines" in the first weeks of forming in 2009, to playing the main stage at the "Telluride Bluegrass Festival" as band contest winners in 2012, to making a second appearance on "A Prairie Home Companion" in 2013, Run Boy Run is spreading their signature instrumentation and sweet three-part female harmony vocal music and youthful energy nationwide.
+
Brother and sister Matt and Grace Rolland have fiddle music running through their blood, raised with bow and rosin on every bedside table. The group's three female lead singers, sisters Bekah and Jen Sandoval, grew up deeply rooted in the bluegrass festivals of Arizona, so they too found a home in Run Boy Run. Bass player Jesse Allen was brought-up on opera and western swing, and grew to love the natural fusion inherent in American music. They're all solid, instrumentally, in a lavish string mix for the genre. The band's "whole" exceeds the sum of its formidable parts, incorporating touches of classical, jazz, and folk through the old-time core of Run Boy Run’s sound.
+
In addition to counting Garrison Keillor among their fans, it has been widely ibserved that Run Boy Run brings a special gift for writing original songs in the classic old time/bluegrass style, featuring a solid instrumental mix of twin fiddles, mandolin, cello and bass.

There’s music, food, dancing and fun in the scenic High Sierra.

Festival events begin at 11 am Friday at Trout Town Joe’s; officially, the festival runs 7 pm Fr-7 pm Sun.
+
Performers include:

Oddly, you can get there more easily from the west side of the Sierra than from connections on the east side, though Inyo County runs a bus from Mojave to Reno that gets you close. From the west side, Yosemite Regional Transportation System has convenient stops within the June Lake Loop. YARTS provides affordable and comfortable transportation to and from Yosemite National Park and connects to other Buses, Trains and airline services in Central California.
+
Full-festival passes, for all three days at all venues, are $75. Individual tickets are available for each event in each venue. The “Kids Music Camp” runs all three days and is free.

★ A SHOW of WEEK Pick...
Fri, Jul 26, in Ventura:
8 pm MILKDRIVE brings “progressive bluegrass” from Austin to The Mint, 6010 W Pico Bl, Los Angeles 90035; 323-954-9630. Presented by “The Bluegrass Situation.”
+
They play only three Southern Cal shows during their formidable national tour:
♪ Zoey’s in Ventura on Thursday
♪ The Mint in L.A. tonight
♪ The Pasadena Folk Music Society series at Caltech on Saturday.
