*** VIRGIL DOYLE WILBURN of THE WILBURN BROTHERS was born on this date in 1930. The last of country music's great sibling duos, brothers Doyle and Teddy Wilburn were as formidable in the spotlight as they were behind the scenes, lending their superb close harmonies to 30 charted hits, including the classic "Hurt Her Once for Me," in addition to launching the careers of acts including LORETTA LYNN.

The Guide was there on June 12 to meet Ringo and celebrate the opening of "RINGO: PEACE & LOVE," the major temporary exhibition now at the Grammy Museum in L.A.
.

(As originally published in June 12) Yesterday, the Guide's editor was privileged to get a sneak peek at the almost-finished major exhibition dedicated to the music career of RINGO STARR -- and a face-to-face with Ringo himself. Well, it's a qualified face-to-face, since he never took off his sunglasses.

The exhibit opens Wednesday,  June 12, at the Grammy Museum in Los Angeles. Tix and info, 213-765-6800; www.grammymuseum.org.

The exhibition, "RINGO: PEACE & LOVE," isn't just the first major exhibition to explore the life and extraordinary career of seven-time GRAMMY Award® winner and iconic BEATLE RINGO STARR. It's also the first major exhibit anywhere, ever dedicated to a drummer, according to Grammy Museum spokeswoman Andie Cox.

The GRAMMY Museum put this together in cooperation with Ringo Starr himself.
+
That was obvious as museum Executive Director Bob Santelli and Ringo exchanged heartfelt words of thanks to one another.
+
Santelli said, "Why this attention by the museum? Because I'm a baby-boomer and I grew-up loving the Beatles? Sure, but it's much more than that. If there hadn't been a Ringo, there wouldn't have been any of the rock drummers who have since become famous."
+
For his part, Ringo observed, "I'm a musician. This is the place to be. And I am very proud of the music I've made, of the work we did as the Beatles, of the legacy we left. I'm thrilled that young people will interact with this exhibit and the music will live on into another generation. It is important to me to be here."
+
Ringo spoke with the characteristic cadence his conversation has always famously had. He is thin and youthful in appearance, relaxed, easygoing, still prone to playing the subtle clown and noting other's remarks by adding his touches of wry wit. The man still has the charm that took a generation of American teenage girls by storm in 1964. It's not an affectation. It's him.

Ringo's earlier music-making, including his skiffle band days, receive attention in the exhibit, and he smiled and brightened even more when the subject came up. (Skiffle music was big in Britain in the late 1950s. It's based on American roots music, circa 1920s. Its counterpart here was the jug band revival in the '60s, now happily enjoying a comeback.)

Ringo speaks easily and fondly of his Beatles bandmates, and in some of his references, there is no sense of the passage of time. But, at the right moment, he does let you know how much he misses George and John, and how much he enjoyed the on-stage musical reunion with Paul McCartney at Madison Square Garden in 2010.
+
Even when he is reflective and philosophical, Ringo seems a genuinely happy man, and that seems to be integral with inner fulfillment. Still, he talks of things yet undone, music to explore, and of the desire to influence young people to value peace and love, and ultimately, the planet and each other.
+
Of course, Ringo's career -- the continuing long journey of a gifted artist -- is multi-dimensional. That's reflected in the exhibition's displays of his original photography, paintings, and sketches.
+
Always a dapper dresser in an avant-garde vein, display cases here are filled with many of his most notable outfits from concert stage and large and small  screens.
+
The one-of-a-kind, LIMITED-RUN exhibition offers visitors an unprecedented, in-depth, look at all aspects of Starr’s musical and creative life –- as a musician, artist, actor, and as the man the world knows and loves simply as "Ringo."
+
Important to him, it also aims to propel Ringo's "universal message of peace and love," so evident in his music and visual art.
+
There's so much to see. The scope of the exhibit spans Ringo’s early life growing up in Liverpool, from RAVING TEXANS turned RORY STORM, from THE BEATLES to becoming a solo artist, and then to the ALL STARRS with whom he continues to tour. The unique collection brings together diverse artifacts, rare and never-before-seen photographs, documents (including his Musicians Union pay book), personal letters, handwritten notes, telegrams, and film and video footage.

In the adjacent theatre, visitors will have the opportunity to see the 17-minute film produced for the exhibition, and we highly recommend it. For anyone too young to have known Beatlemania, it sets the context. Anyone who experienced the phenomenon first -hand will be filled with joy. But that's true of the entire exhibition.
+
"Ringo: Peace & Love" is located on the second floor in The GRAMMY Museum's Special Exhibits space and includes:
+
• The drum kit Ringo played on "Let It Be," "Abbey Road," and "The White Album"
• The drum kit he played on "The Ed Sullivan Show"
• Ringo's "Sgt Pepper" Suit
• The cape he wore in "Help!"
• The red jacket worn during the filming of The Beatles' rooftop concert
• Personal letters, photographs and documents from the Starkey family and Ringo's days with The Beatles

And it includes innovative interactive exhibits, the kind of thing for which the Grammy Museum is renowned. One lets "visitors take a drum lesson with Ringo." Other interactives include singing harmony in a mix of "Octopus's Garden," and working the studio mixing board sliders to make a remix of a Beatles' song.
+
"With this exhibition, the Grammy Museum becomes the only museum in the world to host major special exhibitions dedicated to each member of THE BEATLES," said Museum Director Robert Santelli earlier this year when he gave the Guide a heads-up that this was coming.
+
The entrance to the GRAMMY Museum, in the L.A. LIVE complex, is on Figueroa, just S of Olympic, in Los Angeles 90015. (Official address is 800 W Olympic Bl, Suite A245). It's one block from STAPLES Center.  You can walk from the Red Line subway or the Blue Line light rail's Chic Hearne Station and avoid expensive parking fees in the area. You'll want to spend plenty of time, and tour at least some of the rest of the Grammy Museum while you're there. There are plenty of local eateries, ranging from pricey to a Denny's a block away, and transit buses or light rail make Chinatown ant Olvera Street eateries close.

Named after one of the oldest bars in Los Angeles (though that's spelled differently), THE COALS play heartfelt California country folk. Their rollicking, pastoral sound sometimes evokes The Band, while at other times their sparse arrangements spotlight the intimate lyrics of singer and songwriter Jason Mandell.

In the summer of 2013  the group will release its second album, "A HAPPY ANIMAL." With Mandell’s delivery sounding more Dylanesque than ever, the album finds The Coals mixing traditional Americana with some playful mariachi and New Orleans influences. Though it’s just 22 minutes long, the record is a memorable journey through love’s ups and downs.

Their 2010 debut album, "BRING YOUR LOVE ON BACK," features guest vocals by Sara Watkins (Nickel Creek.) They're ready for this.
