A TEN STAGE FREE FESTIVAL wraps-up October... PLUS concerts & more, into November & beyond ... and THE GUIDE closes one door and opens another (Oct 28 edtn 2016)

LATE ADDITION...

Many artists have wondered about their psychological quirks. Often, it's those "quirks" that drive creativity! But it never hurts to learn about the peculiarities of other creative people. Of all places, C-SPAN is premiering a new show, addressing exactly that, on Saturday night (and it'll be archived on-demand, online, after that). Here's the info:

Sat, Oct 29, on C-SPAN2:
9:15 pm & 10:45 pm "ANDY WARHOL WAS A HOARDER" is presented by Claudia Kalb, former senior writer for Newsweek. She talks about the evolution of mental health using the stories of famous men and women like Charles Darwin, Albert Einstein, Howard Hughes, and Princess Diana.

Now, here's the complete edition as originally published.

Okay, here it is: THE FUTURE OF THE GUIDE HAS BEEN DETERMINED, and we thank everyone who voted to help us make the determination.

Huh? What determination? The question -- for more than a month -- was whether we would keep emphasizing our presentation of EVENTS, or whether we would return to being all about MUSIC NEWS. Because it's become clear we cannot do both.

The total of votes cast are a small fraction of the page counter tallies of the full readership. But those who voted determined what happens (at least around here), and we got something of a Brexit as a result.

Here's the count:
MUSIC NEWS: 762 votes
EVENTS/CALENDAR: 531 votes

We've got to admit, we are really, really, pleased and relieved at that outcome. (Not just because it's the only vote in the fall of 2016 with results we 'spect we'll like -- given that whatever way the national mockery of an excruciatingly unending election goes, is, in any case, a disgraceful travesty. "Lesser of two evils" is a choice? When you've got honest third party candidates? You've got to be kidding. Okay, we'll stop, and get back to the music.)

SO, GIVEN THE RESULTS

of the Guide's reader determination, THIS edition, right here, is our FINAL "events / calendar" focused edition of the Acoustic Americana Music Guide. The timing is right: Saturday brings the end of the "Fall Festival Season," and the big music festivals don't resume 'til Spring. To make our swan song of calendar listings complete, it's also our FINAL edition of our "Music on TV" feature as a comprehensive catalog of performances on the flickering screen. And that part is appropriate, since THIS weekend truly warrants our extensive TV coverage. From Friday evening through the wee hours of Monday morning, this weekend's music-on-tv scene is as amazingly crowded as the go-see-it-live music scene.

So., here it is...

Use it. It's meant to get you out and listening, and/or guided around the channels. it's never been intended simply as a cyber-delivered gem to be savored. "Savored"-? Well, yeah! ...for what it tells you that you didn't previously know about musicians and bands or even about some mysterious series or venue. (Plenty of reader mail has let us know, for years, how you appreciate that.) Of course, it's also your last time to enjoy our longtime, "oh, by the way," informative write-ups for who those artists are, playing those concerts. Since, from here on out, that information will be in full-on NEWS FEATURE STORIES.

So, with thanks to you for your votes, it's bon voyage and fond farewell and off to the pasture for the Guide's editions dedicated to calendar-formatted EVENTS.

THE FUTURE...

From here forward, expect chockfull multi-section NEWS EDITIONS. Reviews, previews, whose in the studio, what innovative ideas are translating into exciting collaborations behind the mic or on the road, who's up for what award or got accolades from somebody famous, conferences, tech meetings, demonstrations that were so astonishing they blew people away, gear reports... and plenty more. And yes, around here, NEWS does include word on upcoming FESTIVALS and the occasional super-duper concert ,or nifty lil' concert in a park somewhere, or something we just don't want you to miss. Which brings this full-circle.

For the last time, we say, "We don't want you to miss anything this weekend. So here ya go."

3 & 7 pm Annual "SAMHAIN: THE STORY OF HALLOWEEN" musically brings the origins Halloween and Celtic Tales of the Supernatural through song, dance, and instrumental performance for just two performances on the same day, and welcomes KEN O'MALLEY as this year's narrator. Plus, this year's production moves to MacLeod Ale Brewing Co, 14741 Calvert St, Van Nuys 91411. The show is written, produced and directed by the multitalented Aedan MacDonnell of Celtic Rhythms, who is, among many other things in the arts community, a member of the Scottish Fiddlers. This year's show will be held in a Scottish brewery. Aedan tells us, "Enjoy a pint of freshly brewed ale as you listen to the stories, hear the music, and feel the breath of those long gone on the back of your neck. You're not too scared, are you? Good! Fear not, Alastair and Jenny of MacLeod Ale Brewing Co have promised to keep the ghoulies at bay so the music, dance and entertainment can commence." The Guide always strongly recommends this show. It's worthy of going on the road, and each year's fresh rendition gets only two performances. Tickets are now on sale. 8 pm Guitarist CHRIS PROCTOR performs in concern at the Pasadena Folk Music Society series at Caltech in Pasadena. Park free in either lot at the S end of Michigan Av, S off Del Mar. Fine American guitarist Chris Proctor plays in Beckman Institute Auditorium (aka "Little Beckman").
=
Chris, now living in Salt Lake City, is a great 6 and 12 string fingerstyle steel string guitarist. Chris's guitar playing encompasses a range of styles, including traditional American folk, Celtic, blues and classical, but his style and fluidity is all his own. He is a fine composer of his own tunes, and he captures a wide range of emotions in his music. He also finds new dimensions in familiar songs, written by others. A good example is his version of the Crosby, Stills, Nash, and Young song "Ohio," in which he tackles the anger and outrage of that song, which was a response to the student killings during the Vietnam War protest at Kent State University in 1970. Chris translates the raw emotion of the original and the event itself into an instrumental piece, not through loud, crashing volume, but with compelling tension that rivets the attention of the listener throughout the piece. With all eyes on his hands, he makes it seem so easy.
=
Oliver Di Place wrote about Chris, "When someone says of an instrumentalist that he is a musical storyteller, I usually roll my eyes. But Chris Proctor really is a storyteller with his music. He plays with a light touch, his fingers gliding across the strings. His melodies take the listener from a definite start to finish, with an interesting plot and wonderful characterization along the way. The melody is in the top string, with counter-melodies and harmonies in the rest of the strings. The rhythm comes from the song as a whole. It all falls into place beautifully.” Seeing Chris perform is quite a treat. His telling of anecdotes about the writing of tunes gives the listener just enough background to form some images which take on life while hearing the song. His guitar playing is extraordinary. Sun, Oct 23:
4:30-8:30 pm "THE CLIMATE REVOLUTION TOUR" arrives in L.A. as a star-studded flagship event, with music by OZOMATLI, GABRIEL MAYERS, and the LA RIVER CHOIR, and speakers SHAILENE WOODLEY, ED BEGLEY JR., KENDRICK SAMPSON, GREG PALAST, FRANCES FISHER, YAHNE NDGO, NICHOLAS GONZALEZ, and JOSH FOX, at Levitt Pavilion in MacArthur Park, 2230 W 6th St, Los Angeles 90057.

Celebrities, activists, and concerned citizens (who love a good dance party) join up as Academy Award-nominated director JOSH FOX brings his "Climate Revolution Tour" to MacArthur Park in Los Angeles. In addition to the guest speakers and the concert, there's a screening of Josh Fox’s latest film, "HOW TO LET GO OF THE WORLD AND LOVE ALL THE THINGS CLIMATE CAN’T CHANGE."

The focus of the Climate Revolution rallies is to inspire engagement and activism around climate change and "the intersectionality" of climate change and social justice, helping to arm people with information they need to protect and empower their communities.

The Climate Revolution Tour launched the week of the Democratic National Convention in Philadelphia, where hundreds of people came out to Vernon Park for the rally-concert-screening event. (Including all the pre-approved convention volunteers denied access because they were Bernie Sanders supporters.) Since then, thousands of people all over the United States and Europe have turned out to see this very important film and hear from the man who has gained his notoriety in the climate movement thanks to his exposure of the very real dangers of fracking in his movies "GASLAND" and "GASLAND 2."

Fracking, or hydraulic fracturing, is the extraction of natural gas from deep in the ground by blasting water and chemicals under extremely high pressure, and Fox’s crusade against the technology began when he was offered $100,000 by an energy company to let them explore for natural gas on his land in Northeast Pennsylvania. After doing his own research, he not only turned down the energy company, but he made it his mission to expose the technology for what it is, not cleaner alternative to oil and coal, but another dirty extraction process which comes with its own host of dangers and risks.

In direct contradiction of the First Amendment , DEIA SCHLOSBERG, the producer of "How to Let Go and Love," was arrested while documenting the shutdown of five major pipelines by environmental activists. She was there as press, and did not participate in the shutdown. She is currently being held in jail in Walhalla, North Dakota, and her footage has been confiscated. She is threatened with 45 years in prison.

“Journalism is not a crime, it is a responsibility,” says JOSH FOX on Schlosberg’s arrest. “The actions of the North Dakota police force are not just a violation of the climate, but a violation of the constitution.”

SHAILENE WOODLEY, who was also arrested recently in North Dakota while protecting the local water supply and protesting the Dakota Access Pipeline, will speak about her experience and more at the Climate Revolution event on October 23. Preceding the rally, there will be a march in protest of the Dakota Access Pipeline hosted by the American Indian Movement Los Angeles. The march will start at MacArthur Park and go from 6th Street to Olympic Boulevard, then to Alvarado Street, and it wiconclude back at the park just as the Climate Revolution rally kicks off. Co-hosting both the march and the rally is California for Progress, an organization that continues to give light to the important issues of our time with large-scale events meant to keep the public awake and involved.

Singer-songwriter CORINNE WEST is accompanied by STEVE POSTELL. Corinne is world-traveling a singer-songwriter, born and raised in California. She has been a traveling soul since the age of 15 when she left her family home and her school to travel across America in a converted school bus with a band of activists. She is known for her singing and original songwriting which is based in Americana music. Her songwriting has met with much critical acclaim and secured her a position as a finalist in the 2005 New Folk competition at the Kerrville Folk Festival.
=
Corinne has been described as "the Siren of the Sierras" (SF Bay Area's Times Herald) while the North Coast Journal in Arcata, declared, "West's voice invokes angels, if angels had a dangerous side." Corinne’s powerful and eloquent voice, coupled with the way she weaves her potent songs has earned her a unique identity in the worlds' acoustic roots scene. Relix noted her "voice of gold," while Legendary BBC radio DJ Bob Harris proclaimed, "I love Corinne's music and truly believe in her as an artist. She has spirit, integrity and talent. I am a massive fan."
=
Corinne has recorded five critically-acclaimed albums and has toured extensively throughout the United States and internationally. In 2015, her song “Change My Ways,” from her folk-rock project “Fire is a Phoenix,” was on the Starbucks national playlist for the month of October and was also featured month-long on the prime-time trailer for the HBO series “The Leftovers.”
=
Corinne's latest album "Starlight Highway" was chosen as one of the best Americana albums of 2016 by The Telegraph, whose Martin Chilton wrote: "California-based singer-songwriter Corinne West has a sweet voice that brings out the full flavor of her evocative songs. The 10 songs are uniformly strong on this self-produced album."
=
Accompanying Corinne for this show will be the always brilliant Steve Postell on guitar and backing vocals. Steve is a good friend and supporter of our house concert series and always enriches a show whether he's backing David Crosby, Jennifer Warnes, John Oates, Robben Ford, Eric Johnson, Dave Koz, Paul Barrere, Jackson Browne or any of the many others he has performed with over the years.

=
Songlines Magazine writes of Rita Hosking, "...arresting lines and images come thick and fast. Her songs are observational, political and philosophical in an unaffected, organic way."
=
Series producers tell us, "In anticipation of her coming, we've been listening to some of the fine songs from Rita's earlier albums, such as Parting Glass and Come Sunrise, as well as songs from her newest recording, Frankie and the No-Go Road, including A Better Day and I See Storms. Rita has a strong, vibrant, and heartfelt voice, which is backed by her fine guitar and occasional banjo. Sean's outstanding dobro and banjo sets off each song perfectly. As a songwriter, she has an uncanny way of capturing interesting people and aspects of life and putting them to compelling music, worth hearing again and again."
=
Tickets are $15 for adults, $5 for Caltech students and children. In two weeks, on Sat, Nov 5, the series present CHRIS PROCTOR, the fine guitarist from Utah. Keep in touch by visiting their web page, www.Pasadenafolkmusicsociety.org.

Already celebrated for her beautiful vocal interpretations of Appalachian folk and bluegrass, Susie is equally renown for her deft incorporation of disparate musical styles -- from Celtic, singer-songwriter, and roots music -- into the high lonesome sound that she does so well. Now, with the edition of founding Waybacks guitarist and Houston Jones alum Glenn Houston, whose upside down left handed playing style is something to behold, McCabe's says "are eagerly awaiting what magic she will bring to our small stage on this evening. "He was my favorite singer at that time." — Robbie Robertson.
=
Stax Records will celebrate the October 21st release of "Otis Redding - Live At The Whisky A Go Go: The Complete Recordings," with a Sunday, October 23 (2 pm) listening party at Los Angeles' Amoeba Records, just down the Sunset Strip from where it was recorded 50 years ago. The event will include box set giveaways, along with other Stax items like tote bags, t-shirts and vinyl Otis Redding albums. The six-CD collection is the entirety of Redding's historic performances over three nights at the famed Sunset Strip venue, recorded Friday, April 8th - Sunday, April 10th,1966. They feature the singer's popular songs of the time, including "Respect," "I've Been Loving You Too Long," and his cover of The Rolling Stones' "(I Can't Get No) Satisfaction." Several of these recordings — all remixed and remastered from the original 4-track analog tapes — were made available for the first time on October 21. In fact, this collection is the first to offer fans the chance to relive all of the sets in their entirety, including between-song banter by Redding, exactly as they were performed. Rounding-out the package is a poster, plus new liner notes from Los Angeles-based journalist Lynell George and box set co-producer Bill Bentley.

2 pm THE JONES GANG plays the "CAMARILLO CAFÉ CONCERT SERIES" at the Camarillo Community Center, 1605 E Burnley St, Camarillo 93010; http://camarillocafe.com; 805-814-9366. (Note the new DAYTIME schedule.) In their former incarnation as the band HOUSTON JONES, these guys attracted two of the biggest audiences ever in the 26 year history of this series. Reformed, with a minor lineup change, THE JONES GANG still delivers the same high-powered mix of blues, gospel, country, rock and Americana that made the original group one of the most popular and critically-acclaimed acts up and down the West Coast. The heart of THE JONES GANG sound is the amazing voice of lead singer-guitarist TRAVIS JONES. His mom was a gospel singer and Travis told bible stories to audiences of revivals and tent meetings as a child, so he refined his craft at an early age. Whether it’s his throaty growl in a down-and-dirty blues number or his angelic tenor delivering a beautiful ballad, wringing every ounce of emotion out of each note, Travis constantly has audiences in the palm of his hand. The same rocking rhythm section that made Houston Jones such an exciting act is at work here in THE JONES GANG with PETER TUCKER on drums and percussion, and one of the Bay Area’s most in-demand musicians, JOSH ZUCKER on bass and vocals. Those of you who were at our last concert were lucky enough to hear Josh playing with Dear John, Love Renee. Pianist/vocalist HENRY SALVIA and lead guitarist/vocalist SEAN ALLEN provide the sonic colors and musical flavors that round out the band’s distinctive Americana sound. More at: http://thejonesgang.com. Doors at 1:30 pm. $20 at the door.

The band is led by Miamon Miller (violin/viola) and includes Cory Beers (cimbalom/tupan and Simeon Pillich (bass). These three musicians have blended their talents and expertise to form an ensemble that respects tradition and encourages creativity. Michael Lawson makes this a quartet. You will not sleep. No, it is not loud, just wonderful and unique. The Garlic Band will be joined by our special guest, Seattle’s Michael Lawson (accordion/vocals). For nearly four decades, Michael has honed a well-deserved reputation as an unparalleled stylist in genres ranging from Bulgarian folk music to swing standards. Aedan adds, "If you like, bring a picnic lunch or dinner, show up early and hang out. Or try out the food truck. From 1-5 pm, Bulls Eye Pub Fare will be on site, and from 6-9 there will be Charlie's Wieners." This show has sold-out, so don't take chances. THE GUIDE'S READER VOTING IS NEARING AN END. WE NEED YOU (not asking for money) -- Help The Guide Make a Decision for the Future

We've had this up for three weeks now, and have been tallying the votes. We need YOURS.

After doing this for years, we're at a crossroads. We must decide whether to be primarily an EVENTS CALENDAR, or primarily a SOURCE OF MUSIC AND INDUSTRY NEWS. It's simply because we no longer have the time to credibly be both.

So we're asking you to determine which way we'll go. YOU decide, by sending-in your VOTE. (Yikes! An election where you actually DO make the difference -- and there's no awful choice with Gropegate and Olighawks dominating a corporate duopoly that blames messengers instead of considering what's in the messages -- oh, stop. We know. We're disgusted, too, and THAT's WHY WE NEED MUSIC & ART in our world!)

So, the future of the Guide. These calendar features -- the entire subject of this particular edition -- consume a tremendous amount of time, far more than is obvious to anyone who hasn't done this kind of thing. That's because EACH ONE must be written from an individual email. Sometimes we can work from a "look ahead" press release from a venue, and get multiple shows at one time. But more typically, we get news of ONE show at a time in ONE email from a band or an artist. Frankly, it crushes the life out of any creative person to perform the mundane and mechanical task of threshing the wheat from the inordinate amount of chaff, sometimes having to track-down something the sender forgot to include (like what time it starts and who's the opening act). And through it all, there's the whole thing of trying to keep our write-ups as interesting as we know the shows will be for anyone who goes.

It takes far more time to do a "calendar" edition than it does to do an actual NEWS FEATURES edition. Believe it or not, that's the truth.

Meanwhile, it has consumed SO MUCH time the last two or three weeks to prepare our calendar/events editions that it's been impossible to bring you the news. And boy, do we have a lot of news backed-up in our lil' sector of cyberia, bustin' at the seams to get out before too much of it goes stale.

In fact: Our NEWS file currently has 1,779 unpublished items in it. That's just since late August, a period of not even eight weeks. Yep, it's all music and music industry items, including press releases previewing upcoming albums, artist collaborations, projects for charity, who's playing on what film score or TV episode, news of various other special projects in the works, and all kinds o' things that we know will interest you. (If we can ever get to 'em.)

Plus, we have bunches of GEAR info, spec sheets and test results on new widgets and doodads and gewgaws and instruments, upcoming artist signature guitars and the like, mics, stage amp systems, new recording technology -- so much that it's psychologically taxing just to tell you that we have it but you haven't seen it.

You KNOW what we're talking about, because the Guide has been bringing you news features like that for years. In fact, if we had the resources, we could publish a DAILY music news edition. THAT's how much we receive, and it pours in on a daily basis.

It's way past time to say that it's inundating and overwhelming. We can't maintain the idea -- or the fantasy -- that we can do justice to all of it. We can't. If Folk-Americana brought-in more revenue, we could think of applying for a grant. But it doesn't, and sorry, but folkies are cheap.

We know that asking our readers for subscription funding to hire help seems like a good idea, but it would become a stressful rat-race that, inevitably, would take even more time away from what's needed to prepare and publish the next edition.

Other solutions, like publishing fewer editions, with more time to write and prepare each one? The internet is not kind to a monthly publication cycle. Cyberia has a short memory, and anything that lacks frequency and immediacy sees its readership collapse. For years, we published almost daily and watched our page views go up and up, off the charts. When we could no longer devote that much daily time, we went to twice a week, and saw those numbers fall by almost half. Now, we're publishing once a week, and we have actually rebuilt some of the lost readership -- and it's got to be because you are finding things here that you don't get elsewhere.

So that brings us to the question of just WHAT it is that you come here to find, and what you WANT and EXPECT to find here. Time to write and tell us:

"Should the Guide be a MUSIC NEWS publication OR an EVENTS JOURNAL?"
