Big ol’ UPDATE: More New Year's Eve Events! Music on January 1; To Infinity, & Beyond!

.
Lots to share, but FIRST, let’s all keep everyone safe:
+
Mon, Dec 31 / Tue, Jan 1,
throughout Southern Cal:
“FREE & SAFE RIDES HOME” offer with two options, especially if YOU expect to be drinking on New Year's Eve…
+
1) Again this year, AAA (the Auto Club) is driving people home for free, AND offering a free tow for your car. Details at www.calif.aaa.com/en-ca/driving-resources/Pages/tipsy-tow.aspx.
+
2) METRO, operators of the subway, light rail, and bus lines, is FREE after 9 pm on all lines that are still running. (It's $1.50 per ride before 9 pm.) But plan carefully! Metro can get you almost anywhere, but may not get you home later! As always, most lines stop running long before evening shows finish (after midnight is especially challenging.) On NYE, what DOES run includes SOME extended times into the wee hours that night. But it's no fun on a bus bench until 4:30 am when the new day's schedule begins...
.
~`~`~`~`~`~`~`~`~`~`~
.
So, just WHAT is out there to tempt me?
.
Geeez, Louise! Southern Cal N.Y.E. events are being added at the last minute all over the web! We’ve been checking them out for you for two days. Now, we are ready to make sense of the scene, recommend a few things that look especially fun, and alert you to the stuff that looks good goin’ in, but might not be so great once you get there.
+
FOR STARTERS, you can celebrate multiple arrivals of 2013 while it’s still Monday, before the Earth spins Tuesday to the Left Coast. When the New Year arrives in Dublin, it’s 4 pm here, and live Irish music ushers-in 2013 at one venue. Later, a big family N.Y.E. event celebrates 2013 at 9 pm Pacific, when the ball drops in New York City. And there’s live music and revelry in oh-so-many places in Southern Cal (waaaay more than we knew when we published the previous edition)! We even caution you about party / event scenes with big advertising budgets and music you would likely find obnoxious -- it’s all in this edition.
+
PLUS, on JANUARY 1, there are even some MUSICAL ALTERNATIVES to seeing multiple images of bowl games, and we’ve got them here for you.
+
So, grab your funny cardboard hat and plastic one-note horn. Happy Almost New Year! Let’s get started!

SHAWN JONES is an epitome of American roots / rock music, and he has an international appeal. True to his influences, his music spans all the greats in rock, real Rhythm & Blues, jazz, and country. With three studio albums and one live album under his belt, Shawn’s skills as a seasoned songwriter, guitarist, and vocalist have put him on the same bill with the likes of BB King, Buddy Guy, Bonnie Raitt, Jimmie Vaughan, Willie Nelson, Leon Russell, Robben Ford, Derek Trucks, Little Feat, and others. Waylon Jennings was also so impressed with his live performance that he took Jones under his wing, offering him the grand opportunity to play on his 1996 release "Right For The Time." Shawn was also Waylon's lead guitarist on Lollapalooza, and Willie's 4th of July Picnic. Shawn’s third album, appropriately titled, “All In Good Time," was completed in the fall of 2005 with Grammy winning producer/engineer David Z. In 2007 he played on country artist Deana Carter’s Vanguard Records release "The Chain", and to this day tours with her as her guitarist. More at www.shawnjonesmusic.com

Mon, Dec 31, in Ojai, a Guide “BEST PICK:”
8 pm Annual “CELTIC NEW YEAR’S EVE Celebration” with SLUGGER O’TOOLE sponsored by the Ojai Concert Series at Ojai Valley Woman's Club, 441 E Ojai Av, Ojai; 805-665-9952; www.ojaiconcertseries.com; tix and info, 805-649-5189.
+
The 4th Annual event combines a high-energy Celtic concert, an hour of waltzes, a Potluck Party, and a New Year’s Eve toast. $20 in advance, under age 15 is half-price at the door, but it may sell-out in advance. Family-friendly show with a wild, fun Celtic concert by Slugger O'Toole.
+
Concert is 8-11 pm, then it’s time for food, fun, dancing, and waltzes until 12:30 in the morning. Dessert and finger-food potluck party, so bring something to share. Hosts supply the party favors and the bubbly.
+
Founded in 2006, Slugger O'Toole has emerged as one of Southern California’s hottest Celtic bands. The mighty men of Slugger O’Toole share a passion for the drinking, fighting & work songs of Ireland, and concoct a lethal brew of foot-stomping classics, heart-rending ballads, deft instrumentals, a-cappella killers and driving original songs that are true to the Celtic tradition while re-imagining the possibilities of the genre.
+
Unlike many Celtic rock bands working the circuit these days, Slugger O’Toole does not play “punk” or “hard-rock” versions of tunes from the Irish songbook. Equally at home on a tiny pub stage or in a massive amphitheatre, the band thrills audiences with up-tempo renditions that pay homage to the Celtic culture while incorporating elements of rock n roll, bluegrass and other musical styles. The band fuses traditional instrumentation with modern sound, resulting in an onstage assemblage that includes fiddle, accordion, mandolin, bodhran drums, pennywhistles, acoustic & electric guitars and bass.
+
Epic live shows at bars, theatres, fairs and festivals combined with a blue-collar work ethic and never-surrender attitude have led the L.A. Weekly magazine to anoint Slugger O'Toole as “LA’s hardest-working Irish band”.
+
Slugger O'Toole has a core roster of six brothers-in-arms on a mission to take the world of Celtic music by storm. Combining a love of entertaining audiences with an undying enthusiasm for Irish music and culture,

Mon, Dec 31, in Beverly Hills, a Guide “BEST PICK:”
8 pm “NEW YEAR'S EVE 1930s HOLLYWOOD GALA” at the Marquesa Ballroom, Montage Hotel, Beverly Hills.
+
This is billed as “a jaunt down memory lane.” For that to be true, you’d need to be in your nineties. Still, it looks to be a dandy way to re-live Hollywood's Golden Era. The festivities include dancing, party favors and a midnight champagne toast. An 8 pm cocktail reception is followed by a 9 pm dinner seating with four-course dinner menu and wine pairings. $295 per person.

.
Mon, Dec 31, in Universal City:
9 pm "NEW YEAR'S EVE AT UNIVERSAL CITY WALK" offers four locations for fireworks at midnight, live entertainment all evening, and a street party spilling out of its restaurants and bars.
+
It's ostensibly $15 a head to go, but parking costs your life savings.
+
Parking at CItyWalk, starting at 4 pm NYE, is shockingly expensive. Self-parking is (gasp) $55 per car; to mitigate that, they advertise that it "includes admission." Valet parking is $65 per car, including admission.
+
Since their parking includes admission and Shuttle / Drop-Off, you could justify it by packing your car with people like a can of sardines. Walk-up Admission is $15 per person, and children under 48" tall are the only ones who get in free.
+
Another strategy, if you really want to go: park at the North Hollywood Metro Red Line subway lot, which is free, and ride one stop to Universal City; Metro is $1.50 before 9 pm, free after 9 pm on NYE until it stops running in the wee hours that night.
+
Live musical entertainment? Uhh, it"s a bit edgy, with headliners JAMAR ROGERS & DIEGO VAL from NBC-TV's "The Voice," playing the "5 TOWERS CONCERT VENUE" beginning at 10 pm. +
Don't look to the other three stages for something better:
+
The UNIVERSAL GLOBE STAGE has no live music; expect off-speed manipulation of vinyl by "DJ Roonie G Entertainment" starting at 9:30 pm.
+
The WATERWORLD ARENA is all about making children oscillate, with DJs, balloon artists, and "Strolling Characters Entertainment" beginning at 9 pm.
+
The BLUES BROS. STAGE seems not to be presenting live music, but instead has "DJ Lovemachine Entertainment" starting at 10 pm. (What a waste, when L.A. is FILLED with fine blues musicians!)
+
Fireworks at midnight -- the best thing this event has going for it -- has limited seating, including a Family Seating Area.
+

7 pm (Saturday) PATRICK BALL plays the BeeKay Theatre in a show presented by Fiddler’s Crossing, in Tehachapi 93561; www.grungehobbit.com; 661-823-9994.
+
Last time in the little mountain town, Patrick played to a sold-out audience. Considered one of the premier Celtic harp players in the world, Ball returns in "O'Carolan's Farewell to Music," a one-man show presented by Fiddlers Crossing in the BeeKay theatre.
+
Written by Patrick Ball and Peter Glazer, the play brings to the stage the legendary life, turbulent times and captivating music of Ireland's most celebrated artist.
+
The Guide’s special “MUSICIAN PROFILE” and the theme of the show…
+
Ireland in the 17th and 18th centuries was a troubled, tumultuous place. The old Gaelic order had been shattered by the English invaders, and the poets, the bards and the harp players were set out to walk the roads from place to place in search of shelter and patronage. Yet this dark period of Irish history produced, in Turlough O'Carolan, a Celtic harper and composer of such brilliance, grace and character that he is to this day regarded as the country's greatest and most beloved musician.
+
In "O'Carolan's Farewell to Music," Patrick Ball tells the blind harper's story through the character of poet and fellow harper, Charles MacCabe, O'Carolan's life-long friend and traveling companion. Through MacCabe's eyes and 14 of Carolan's tunes played on the rare wire-strung harp, we are drawn into this storm-tossed chapter of Irish history. The play is filled with Irish wit and pathos, and demonstrates both the power of friendship and the vital role of the artist in troubled times.
+
Although of Irish heritage, Ball was actually born and raised in California and thought he would grow up to be a lawyer like his father. While he studied music during his younger days, playing piano and guitar and annoying his college roommate with his tin whistle, it was his study of the lyrical, turbulent history of Ireland that fully engaged him. On a visit to the Emerald Isle, he fell in love with the eloquence and fire of the Irish oral tradition, and with the Celtic wire-strung harp with its crystalline, bell-like voice. In his words, he "came to know that marvelous unity of Irish words, music and history" that would become his passion and livelihood.
+
Upon returning to California, he received a Masters Degree in History from Dominican College and then set off to see the country. In the Blue Ridge Mountains of North Carolina, his love for the spoken word was rekindled when he encountered the living oral tradition of the Appalachian storytellers. After another trip to Ireland, Ball was ready to create his vocation by combining the things he loved most -- Irish history, the spoken word and music. His first step was to find a maker of the wire-strung Celtic harp and teach himself to play.
+
Ball now tours extensively, performing in concert as well as in his theatre piece. He has recorded nine instrumental and three spoken word albums that have won awards in both categories.
+
Performances are Sat, Jan 5, at 7 pm, and Sunday (matinee) Jan 6, at 3 pm.
+
Tickets may be purchased by credit card at 661-823-9994. Tix, $25. Doors open one-half hour before the performance. For last-minute ticket availability on the day of the performance, call 661-823-9994.

Thursday, December 27, 2012

Plan your New Year's Eve, and the waning days & nights of 2012, right here!

.
Whoo-eee! Plenty of events with good, listenable music (i.e., Folk-Americana) will usher-out 2012. Now that we’re past all that Mayan End-of-Days nonsense, let’s get on to tuneful end-of-the-year action! One New Year’s music party is waaay early, on Friday. Another, with Irish music, ushers-in 2013 at 4 in the afternoon Monday, when the New Year arrives in Dublin. And this is only Thursday, with plenty happening today through Monday night. Just jump in, the water’s fine…

+
Venue impresario BOB STANE says, “Yet another encore. We do not bring an act back this often unless it is superb.”
+
With a wealth of classic songs to CAROL KING’s credit, it was only a matter of time before someone was bound to pay tribute to one of the greatest singer-songwriters of the late 20th century.
+
Carole King has been inducted into the “Songwriters Hall of Fame” and the ‘Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.” She wrote several Top Ten hits for various groups with her partner and husband GERRY GOFFIN during the ’60s, and in 1971, her “Tapestry” album became the top-selling pop solo album ever and held that position until MICHAEL JACKSON's “Thriller” in 1982.
+
Bob Stane tells us, “JEANNIE AUSTIN, a fan of Carole's for many years, captures the bluesy and soulful quality of King's voice and piano playing perfectly. She has assembled a band of seasoned musicians to accompany her in this venture and they replicate the material with disciplined accuracy.”
+
Jeannie and her band, TAPESTRY, perform King’s hits, including "It's Too Late", "Natural Woman", "I Feel the Earth Move", "Sweet Seasons", "So Far Away", "Locomotion", "You've Got a Friend" and more.
+

Rev. Dov, organizer of the event, says, "Our performers will ring out the year on a grand note. Join dedicated volunteers, featuring the Veterans' Holiday Celebration staff and crew who have brought holiday cheer to our veterans for 20 years..."
+
This event takes its name from a singular ancient text about love -- in all its forms. Shir haShirim, the Song of Songs, is unlike any other book in the Judeo- Christian Bible. Here's an illustrative comment from a review of a new translation: "With its sensuality, its erotic nature, and its mysterious placement within the most sacred of books, it is no wonder that readers, both ancient and modern, think Shir haShirim is hot stuff." -- Rabbi Jill Jacobs.

Singer-songwriter LEE KOCH has taken some unexpected turns in the past couple of years. From bandleader to baker he halted his pursuit of a music career to explore a different avenue. Baking bread only lasted a few months before Lee got an opportunity to be on national television as a contestant on NBC’s The Voice. It was a short stint, but provided enough exposure to get him back into music and on the road. Now with his second album in the works and his first child on the way Lee plans to tour the country with his family in hopes of continuing on in music for years to come. Hear Lee introduce the songs from his upcoming album at Zoey’s, his musical home-away-from-home. More at www.leekochmusic.com. $10 cover.

(“The venue named by the Guide’s editor, writing in FolkWorks, as L.A.’s best intimate acoustic listening room venue”).
+
THE BIRDHIVE BOYS is a 5 piece traditional bluegrass outfit based in Brooklyn, NY. The boys approach a traditional country and bluegrass repertory with instrumental prowess and a unique rhythmic sensibility. The band has recently shared the stage with bluegrass supergroups Michael Cleveland and Dailey & Vincent and has just finished a new EP set for release this November.
+
With the "classic" bluegrass look and sound, The Birdhive Boys have been compared to Bill Monroe's Bluegrass Boys and neo-traditionalists the Johnson Mountain Boys. Holding down a two-year long residency at the National Underground in Manhattan's Lower East Side, The Boys have shared the stage with many fine acts, including national touring act The Holy Ghost Tent Revival, Grammy winners Dailey and Vincent, and New York City bluegrass heavyweight Michael Daves (Chris Thile, Steve Martin). They recently finished a 4-song EP called "The Corn Lady", available for free download through their website, and hard copies for sale (with complementary autographs) directly from the Boys at their shows.
+
The Birdhive Boys started in 2008 with brothers Zack and Sam Bruce rediscovering the songs of their youth. Mom and Dad were casual bluegrass pickers and singers, and the songs of The Stanley Brothers, Del McCoury, Doc Watson, and Tony Rice comprised much of Zack and Sam's childhood soundtrack. The Bruce brothers started playing the brother harmony repertoire in Zack's downtown loft, and after about a year they decided to put together a full band for shows. They were able to recruit fellow New Jerseyan bassist-of-all-trades Max Johnson, St. Louis flatpicker Justin Camerer, and Ellery Marshall on the banjo. The Boys can be found in venues in and around NYC, such as the Living Room, Rockwood Music Hall and the National Underground. Check them out at http://birdhiveboys.com.
+
EVAN MARSHALL is widely regarded as one of the greatest mandolin virtuosos ever. He possesses an uncanny technique which the Raleigh-Durham Independent called "superhuman," the Los Angeles Times called "remarkable," the Washington Post labeled "truly dazzling," and the Fresno Bee called "mind-boggling." Besides his "obvious virtuosity" (Pasadena Star News), he also has "in color and texture . . . a stunning mastery of interpretation" (St. Paul Pioneer Press). Evan's accomplishments are legendary among other artists of the plucked string: The late Chet Atkins called him "one of the few great musicians of our time;" David Grisman put it simply: "the world's fastest mandolinist."
+
ALEX FINAZZO has become a fixture in the acoustic music scene of Southern California. Playing in groups such as the Blue Creek Band, Scott Gates Band, Soledad Mountain Band and more, he has performed at the region’s largest Bluegrass festivals and consistently draws audiences in with his dynamic and powerful flat-picking. His style makes no apologies for his Bluegrass roots, yet has evolved into an eclectic blend of influences rich with heartfelt melodies, impressive technique and a dash of dry wit. With an infectious passion for acoustic music, seeing Alex perform is akin to joining him in celebration of the power of music to enrich the spirit.

ANGEL TAYLOR - Crowds have been good to Taylor, whose road resume reads like a who’s who of singer-songwriter successes, having traveled the country with acts including Grammy Award winner Adele, Gavin Degraw, Ingrid Michaelson and Mat Kearny, Five For Fighting, Brett Dennen, Brandi Carlile and Kate Voegele. While life on the road has been filled with rewards, it’s also had its challenges for Angel, the youngest of five girls raised under the roof of a single mother. “I come from a really close family, and I’d be lying if I didn’t say there were times I wished I had my mom to talk to, instead of someone in the van on the way to the next city,” she says with a laugh, “but then, when I’m home, it’s never long before I’m itching to be on the road again! When I’m out there playing every night, it’s a lot like being able to sing my diary… it’s like the memories are with me, and I get to share them with the crowds - it’s a win-win!” More at www.facebook.com/angletaylor
+
SHANE ALEXANDER says “My goal has always been to write music that connects on a spiritual level the way classic writers like Neil Young, Paul Simon, and Bruce Springsteen do. I don't know that I'll get there, but I'm definitely getting closer." In addition to his own runs in the U.S., Canada, the UK, the Netherlands, Germany, Austria, France, and Belgium, Shane Alexander performed for the biggest audiences of his career when he opened Seal's U.S. tour in 2008. In 2006-2007, Alexander toured constantly and was asked to open two U.S. tours with Jewel. Armed only with an acoustic guitar, he won over thousands of new fans night after night. +
Robbie King is considered by many in the music world to be the very essence of the modern classic bluesman. In concert, you hear the unmistakable influence of some of the greatest R&B and blues artists of all time. Robbie's love for his craft and those who came before him is more than evident in his recordings and performances.
+
Born in Wichita Falls, Texas, RK grew up listening to and learning to admire artists like Ray Charles, Albert Collins and BB King. A desire to play that kind of music for appreciative fans became a powerful obsession and this boyhood dream of a Bluesman's life has, after decades of hard work and dedication, indeed come true.
+
Robbie has shared the stage with Bonnie Riatt, Pinetop Perkins, and countless other stars. On Robbie's CD, "Classic Case of the Blues," he approaches this uniquely American genre with a truly original treatment that pleases rock, blues and R&B fans.
+
Tonight, you'll hear Robbie return to his roots in traditional classic blues, backed by The Blues Counts with a sweet twist: Tina 'Queen of Hearts' Jackson, singer-songwriter-recording artist, Image Award Winner for "Best Performance in an Ensemble," joins-in.

SHAWN JONES is the epitome of American Roots/Rock music. He has proven over time that he has an international appeal. He is true to form of his influences, spanning from all the greats in Rock, Rhythm & Blues, Jazz & Country.

+
Slugger O'Toole consists of a core of six brothers-in-arms on a mission to take the world of Celtic music by storm. Combining a love of entertaining audiences with an undying enthusiasm for Irish music and culture,
