December 7 in Perspective
.
On this date 71 years ago, the peaceful skies of Hawaii were suddenly shattered by the explosions of bombs and impact of torpedoes and machine gun bullets on the US Pacific Fleet, at anchor on a Sunday morning in Pearl Harbor.
+
It was a sudden attack by the Empire of Japan, then ruled by militarists, even in the midst of peace talks. It brought America into a global war it had avoided, even as the Nazis overran Europe, Italy overran North Africa, and Japan overran Manchuria and part of China.
+
Nothing since the invading British burned Washington in the War of 1812 had the impact of the Day of Infamy at Pearl Harbor. Nothing after the Fall of the Philippines, in the months after Pearl Harbor, was comparable to it, until the attacks on September 11, 2001.
+
Mobilization of America’s industrial capabilities to win World War II would make the nation a global superpower. America’s rebuilding of nations devastated by that war, including former enemies, would define the American character like nothing else, before or since.
+
As dark and brutal and inhumane as the events of World War II were, they had a distinct advantage over our times: the options and choices were clear-cut because the consequences of failure were so terrifying. Outcomes were clear: either annihilation of freedom and liberty, or restoration of liberated, independent nations. The bad guys were really bad. The dictators and their conquering armies left entire populations of victims. Millions were truly in need of help, and they were grateful to receive it. And, to finance all of that, Americans willingly paid high taxes to make the world better for humanity, for people everywhere, and for generations to follow. That’s important, because we have the world we do, based on that investment by our parents and grandparents. So, next time some politician tells you that some rich guy is not willing to pay anything more in taxes, remind him that his current top rate is one-third what it was in the 1950s, when America built the interstate highway system, and one-half what it was in the 1960s, when America went to the moon.
+
Politician’s calls for austerity are dangerous: they could bring us to an economic Pearl Harbor, not one of explosions, but one of decline and decay, of surrendered leadership and innovation. Freedom isn’t free, and nobody should feel entitled to a free ride. Especially those who have benefitted the most from the capability America built after the deaths at Pearl Harbor, and the sacrifices of those who built and defended the nation, before and since. Those who now benefit the most from being here can pay their share. Their free ride needs to be over. We owe that to all who sacrificed to give us a great nation and a better world.

Fri, Dec 7, in Santa Monica:
8 & 10 pm KINKY FRIEDMAN plus an opening set by BRIAN MOLNAR at McCabe’s, 3101 Pico Bl, Santa Monica 90405; 310-828-4497.
+
Novelist, columnist, musician, cigar and tequila mogul, animal rescuer, former candidate for Governor of Texas, and ever-clever reprobate, there is only one Kinky Friedman. If you’ve never seen him, you must. If you have, you probably already have tickets. This is his “BiPolar Tour and fact-finding mission.” Perhaps he will answer the question, “Will he or won’t he run for governor again?” And he will play songs from his new live album, “Live at Woodstock.”
+
Aside from his pending political rebirth, Kinky is both energized and excited about all things Kinky, not least of which is his new book written with WILLIE NELSON, “Roll Me Up and Smoke Me When I Die.” Kinky’s extensive forward and full-on collaboration with Willie has perked the ears of the publishing world, and the book promises to be one of the top sellers of the fall and winter seasons. Additionally, conversations have already begun with major publishers about a return of Kinky’s intrepid detective . . . himself, with a two-book deal in the offing.
+
The BiPolar World Tour is nothing if not a fact-finding mission, as Kinky calculates national political views, particularly toward the Kinkster himself. For Kinky is considering a second run for Texas governor. After a plethora of recent (and ongoing) gaffes by Texas’ Rick Perry, one of the nation’s least popular sitting governors, the Kinkster will bring a fresh view of Texas politics with him. Pollsters and the Kinky-ites believe he can win this time. Most Texans (and a whole lot of other Americans) already know who is the true governor of the heart of Texas.
+
Kinky will be hawking a new live solo CD, “Live From Woodstock,” recorded on the first American leg of the BiPolar Tour and featuring some of his best work ever. He will also introduce KINKY FRIEDMAN’S “MAN IN BLACK TEQUILA” to Californians, with tastings at most venues and auctions in each city of three-bottle gift boxes. All profits from the auctions go to the Utopia Animal Rescue Ranch, Kinky’s favorite 501(c)3 charitable organization.
+
While Kinky is excited about “Live From Woodstock” it’s not the only CD he’s touring. Rising star roots performer JESSE DAYTON has recorded an entire album of Kinky’s songs, called “Jesse Sings Kinky,” and it’s getting major attention on Americana radio, especially at SiriusXM. Dayton has been starring as Kinky in road productions of the stage play “Becoming Kinky,” by prize-winning playwright TED SWINDLEY, who created the world smash “Always — Patsy Cline.” International productions of the play will be heading across the pond in 2013. So he has plenty to talk about. That makes him dangerous and very, very entertaining.
+
Tix, $30. Advance purchase strongly advised.

.
Fri, Dec 7, in Altadena:
8 pm SALTY SUITES with special guest JOHN WHYTOCK at the Coffee Gallery Backstage, 2029 N Lake Av, Altadena 91001; reservations 626-798-6236 (10 am-10 pm); venue phone 626-398-7917; info www.coffeegallery.com. (“The venue named by the Guide's editor, writing in FolkWorks, as L.A.’s best intimate acoustic listening room venue”).
+
The Salty Suites are the mega-talented young band of Chuck Hailes, Chelsea Williams, and Scott Gates. Scott is a musical prodigy on the mandolin, and he is a multi-instrumentalist, playing guitar and singing. He’s performed all over the country with artists as varied as John McEuen, Nathan McEuen, Kenny Loggins, Steve Martin, and the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band, along with a who's who of the bluegrass world. In the last two years, he’s performed on the Ellen Show with Steve Martin and recorded with Kenny Loggins. CHELSEA WILLIAMS stars as the singer in the Chevy commercial who sings behind the wheel and in the shower. She sounds great on stage, too.
+
JOHN WHYTOCK has performed locally, nationally and internationally, playing for crowds of over 20,000. His music has been heard on radio and television, and he’s worked as a session musician. In the ’80s, John took a hiatus from his musical career to raise his children. During that time, he became an internationally successful artist. In 2008, he came full circle and again picked up his guitar, penning new tunes and opening White Oak Recording Studio. Since then, he has released two CDs and produced CDs for numerous other artists.
+
Though he can play in any genre, JOHN WHYTOCK prefers fingerstyle guitar with a little classical thrown-in. His influences are varied and include Beethoven, Bach, The Beatles, The Ventures, Andre Segovia, Chet Atkins, and Paul Simon. John considers himself more a composer than a guitarist, though his eclectic offerings are both fun and intelligent. He delights in beautiful melodies, innovative chord progressions and clever lyrics. He takes a colorful journey through both time and place. More about him at www.johnwhytockmusic.com
