"GEORGE CARLIN: A PLACE FOR MY STUFF"

The GRAMMY Museum's newest exhibit, "GEORGE CARLIN: A PLACE FOR MY STUFF," has its OPENING DAY today, Wednesday, Sep 30, commemorating the late GRAMMY-winning comedian, at the Grammy Museum, 800 W Olympic Bl (entrance on Figueroa), L.A. 90015; Tix & info, 213-765-6803 or online at www.grammymuseum.org

The exhibit marks the third display in the Museum's comedy series, and include Carlin's GRAMMY Awards, the set lists from his performances on "The Tonight Show" in 1962 and "The Ed Sullivan Show" in 1971, his public arrest records, and more.

"George Carlin helped redefine the art form of stand-up comedy. He used his talent to not only entertain, but to question conventional wisdom and social injustices," said Bob Santelli, Executive Director, who continues, "With this latest display in our comedy series, we continue to spotlight some of the greatest comedy acts, many of whom have been recognized by the GRAMMY Awards."

This is a fine tribute and a way to celebrate a redefining figure in stand-up comedy.

PLUS, take note...

"A CONVERSATION WITH KELLY CARLIN" happens at the GRAMMY Museum on Friday, October 2, at 7:30 pm.

Kelly Carlin, daughter of the late GRAMMY-winning comedian George Carlin, is currently touring the country with her one woman show, A Carlin Home Companion, which recently wrapped multiple sold-out performances at Garry Marshall's Falcon Theatre in Burbank, California. On Sep 15, St. Martin's Press published Kelly Carlin's memoir, "A Carlin Home Companion: Growing Up With George."

In conjunction with its latest exhibit, "George Carlin: A Place For My Stuff" (opening Sep 30), the GRAMMY Museum welcomes Kelly Carlin to the Clive Davis Theater for an intimate discussion about her new book, and life with her father, moderated by Bob Santelli, Executive Director of the GRAMMY Museum. The conversation will be followed by a reading with special guest actor/comedian Kevin Pollak.

a)  WEBCAST CONCERTS: web VIDEO shows, live from the Central Coast...

Almost nightly, there are FREE LIVE WEBCASTS from the Central Coast of California presented by the prolific “SONGWRITERS AT PLAY” showcase series, with full acoustic lineups. Shows start as early as 6:30 pm and as late as 8 pm; check their website. This series offers as many as six or seven live video webcasts each week – plus an occasional more-produced retrospective radio show that is an audio web simulcast.

Performing host STEVE KEY uses any of several music halls operated by wineries or microbreweries, or various other nice venues – all somewhere between Paso Robles and Santa Barbara. Attending most of their shows in-person is usually no-cover. Quite remarkable.

Shows stream FREE, live on the web, at:

http://centralcoastlive.com/watch-our-live-streams-concerts-here

These webcasts feature multiple cameras and truly superior sound. They even have provisions for you to watch it through your big flatscreen tv. Their site explains all that. But it is a little confusing because there’s no “click here to watch” button. Just learn the start time from their site, then be online at that time and the show starts when it starts.

This weekend and beyond...

WYNONNA has been working with Cactus Moser on material for this, her 8th studio album, due out on Curb Records. The pair debuted some of the new songs earlier this year during their at-capacity show as part of the "SXSW Music Festival."

NPR's Ann Powers was in the March 21, 2015 crowd in Austin, and she noted: "The Nashville superstar is in transition, moving from studio-polished pop to a rawer, more intimate style in a small combo anchored by her husband and producer, Cactus Moser, on drums. Wynonna shared material from her upcoming album and reworked major hits like 'She Is His Only Need' with clean arrangements that highlighted her still-extraordinary voice...[she] belted out notes that would have made Aretha Franklin weep. 'I was named after Wynonie Harris, so I'm blues on the inside,' she declared before delivering a face-melting version of Robert Johnson's 'Crossroads.' Wynonna let it all hang out tonight. It was clear she can get wherever she wants to go."

WYNONNA is a five-time Grammy winner and New York Times bestselling author. She has always centered her career on telling stories. Whether performing alongside her mother as one half of the legendary duo THE JUDDS, or pushing the boundaries on her own mega-successful solo path, Wynonna's ability to reach the heart of the human spirit through her bold and unflinching honesty is the entertainer's true gift.

Respected by the millions of fans who are drawn to her music and her undeniable talent, Wynonna's rich and commanding voice has sold over 30 million albums worldwide, spanning her epic career. Charting countless singles, including 20 #1 hits and over 60 industry awards, the iconic performer was once dubbed by Rolling Stone as "the greatest female country singer since Patsy Cline."

Thu-Sun, Oct 1-4,
FESTIVAL,
in Arizona:
64th Annual "REX ALLEN DAYS" is an iconic western music festival, a benefit event with "good ole fashioned fun to be had" in the historic town of Willcox, Arizona.

Rex Allen Days has been around since 1951. The original event was planned as a benefit for the local hospital. Since then, countless other charitable organizations have benefited from the proceeds of the weekend. The proceeds are also used to present scholarships to Willcox High School graduates. The first Rex Allen Days featured a rodeo, parade and an appearance by Rex.

Many western performers have stepped in to support the cause since then. The late Rex Allen was born 40 miles from Willcox, AZ and grew up playing guitar and singing at local functions. Fame came when he made his way to Chicago and performed on the "National Barn Dance" on WLS-AM. He soon found himself making successful records with a string of country and western hits in Hollywood for Mercury and Decca Records. Beginning in 1950, Allen starred as himself in 19 Hollywood western movies, becoming one of the top-ten box office draws of the day. His character was depicted in comic books, while on screen, he personified "the clean cut, God-fearing American hero of the Wild West who wore a white Stetson hat, loved his faithful horse Koko, and had a loyal buddy who shared his adventures."

Rex Allen (Sr.) was gifted with a rich, pleasant voice, ideally suited for narration and was able to find considerable work as a narrator in a variety of films, especially for Walt Disney Pictures wildlife films and television shows. The work earned him the nickname, “The Voice of the West.” He even did the narration in the 1973 animated film “Charlotte’s Web.” He received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, located at 6821 Hollywood Boulevard. In 1983, he was inducted into the Western Performers Hall of Fame at the National Cowboy & Western Heritage Museum in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma.

Rex Allen Jr. will be on hand to celebrate the life of his late father, the western actor, singer, Arizona cowboy and narrator of classic Disney films. Rex Jr., singing in his smooth, rich style, had hits with “Goodbye,” “I’m Gettin’ Good At Missing You (Soitare),” “Lonely Street,” “Two Less Lonely People,” “With Love”, “If I Fell in Love With You”, “It’s Over,” “Drink it Down, Lady,” “Cup of Tea” (a duet with Margo Smith), and is known for other songs. He is also the writer and performer of the alternate state anthem of Arizona, titled “I Love You Arizona.” Rex Jr. was a regular on The Statler Bros. Show on The Nashville Network in the 1990s, and he hosted the show "Yesteryear." Following in his father’s footsteps with his speaking voice, Rex Jr. was the narrator of the Jim Carrey movie "Me, Myself and Irene," and he is the writer, director and actor in the stage show "Gone Country," a Las Vegas hit of the late ’90s.

Kicking off an extended weekend on Oct 1, Rex Allen Jr., a member of the Western Music Hall of Fame, will do what he does each year, making the rounds performing. He plays first at the Senior Center at 10:30 am, followed by Willcox Elementary School at 1 pm, then the Northern Cochise Community Nursing Home at 3 pm. A cowboy gentleman and dedicated artist, he will also be appearing at his annual “Question & Answer” session to be conducted in Windmill Park on Oct 3rd at 5 pm, where he will sing his rendition of the National Anthem for the Rex Allen Days Rodeo.

Main festival events...

Thursday night, the Annual 'Cowboy Hall of Fame" Banquet inducts local “cowboys” into the truly unique group of people who helped contribute to Willcox’s history.

Friday has a variety of events, including the Rodeo Queen Competition, appearances by Rex Allen Jr. and other entertainers at the elementary school and the NCCH Nursing Home. Afternoon/evening brings gunfights, antique tractor pulls, cowboy poetry entertainers, Rex Jr.'s "Celebrity Panel Q & A," old Rex Allen movie showings, and a special wine & cheese benefit for the Rex Allen Museum.

Saturday starts with a large parade that goes through Historic Downtown Willcox. Rex Allen Jr does two concerts at the Wilcox Historic Theater. Show times are 2 & 5 pm, with all seats reserved.

Order tix to Rex Jr's shows at 520-254-2101.

Rex Jr. says, “Rex Allen Days features many of my dad’s favorite events like rodeos, a parade, and of course, music. We fit in everything we can! So if fans or friends see me out and taking part in the weekend activities, please, by all means stop and say hello. This is my favorite weekend of the year and how lucky am I that I get to celebrate and honor my dad with friends that loved him, too!”

Their Sep 1st newsletter edition covered live music, theatre, and film screenings, and declared "there's something for everyone at ArtPrize after dark." For once, a boast like that appears true.

Smartly conceived, "ArtPrize Tonight" features three different categories of evening programming — On Stage, On Screen and Critical Discourse — and there's at least one activity for you to enjoy every night of the 19-day event.

Now, it helps that Grand Rapids is a town with five colleges/universities and a river just barely big enough for boats and bridges. Ready-made audience and marvelous setting. But what they do with the annual event will either inspire you or make you jealous.

Here are seven "must-attend 'ArtPrize Tonight' events." (Read the full lineup at: www.artprize.org/tonight ) ~

√ "Critical Discourse." The popular event-within-an-event returns to ArtPrize Seven, Sep 28-Oct 6. It's a series of panel discussions and art critiques that offers something for everyone. From the televised "Why These Finalists?" programs to an examination of color and design trends, "Critical Discourse" — powered by "ITC, Your Energy Superhighway" — is charged conversation providing art-world context to the ArtPrize event this fall.

√ FOLK MUSIC CONCERT. "The Voice" finalist JOSH DAVIS performs at St. Cecilia's. The Michigan native headlines a benefit concert for St. Cecilia Music Center on Oct 4. Raised in the folk tradition, Davis will perform a solo show with openers (local musicians) TROLL FOR TROUT and FAUXGRASS QUARTET in the historic Royce Auditorium. Get tickets at the ArtPrize site if you can be there.

√ THE AVETT BROTHERS, the Grammy-nominated folk-rock band, take center stage alongside singer-songwriter BRETT DENNEN and his band, and Grand Rapids' own THE CRANE WIVES, Oct 3, at an impressive, one-of-a-kind riverfront Tent Venue experience in downtown Grand Rapids, known as The Eddy. Get full concert details (and tickets, if you can be there) through Porterhouse Presents; link at ArtPrize website.

√ "MICHIGAN HOUSE @ PYRAMID SCHEME." Invoking the vibes of this year's Michigan House installation at SXSW, a variety of acts presented by Dizzybird Records and Middle West — including FLINT EASTWOOD, HI-KER, and MPV — take to The Pyramid Scheme stage, Oct 7 at 8 pm.

√ "LEATHER AND LACE: WOMEN OF ROCK" at Rosa Parks Circle. This returns for an encore performance on Sep 27 at 6 pm. The Grand Rapids Circle Theatre production presents "a wide range of music that spans decades. 'Leather and Lace' features songs by Janis Joplin, Heart, Pat Benatar, Joan Jett, Carly Simon, and more." The concert is FREE and open to the public.

√ "WATERFRONT FILM FESTIVAL." This is the opening aspect of "ArtPrize On Screen." It debuts with the Waterfront Film Festival hosting evening and daytime screenings of cutting-edge independent cinema — showcasing 22 films, many with Michigan ties, including six feature narratives, five documentaries and ten short films. You can find the full screening and event rundown, and details on Waterfront Film Festival weekend passes at www.artprize.org/on-screen.

√ "ART PRIZE AWARDS & AFTER PARTY." On Oct 9, after two weeks of viewing and voting on art, they'll announce the winners of $500,000 in prizes at the Seventh Annual ArtPrize Awards. If you're there, head down to Rosa Parks Circle (or tune into WOOD TV8, which might also be online at the ArtPrize site) at 5 pm (Eastern) for a PRE-SHOW CONCERT, and at 7:45 pm for live ArtPrize Awards coverage. Many will adjourn afterwards to the Pyramid Scheme for the Complete VII Dance Party, the official ArtPrize Awards after party.

10 am-5 pm  44th Annual “SANTA BARBARA OLD-TIME FIDDLERS' CONVENTION & FESTIVAL” brings performances by the VENTUCKY STRING BAND, THE KATHY KALLICK BAND, FRONT COUNTRY, plus contestants and more, at the Stow House Museum, 304 N Los Carneros Rd, Goleta (just N of Santa Barbara) 93117.

Our friends at the Pasadena Folk Music Society did a nice description: "This is like a mini-Topanga Banjo•Fiddle Contest day, also in a wonderful spot, surrounding the historic Stowe House and featuring jamming, workshops, main stage performances, and, of course, the contest! Once you pay the modest admission price, you can enter the contest and perform a song to compete for prizes. Or you can sit back and listen to some great music of the fine hired performers, and mingle with the jamming musicians. It is called the 'Fiddle Contest,' but you'll hear a similar mix of instruments and singing that you hear in our series. And you could even take the train up there, then you can walk a mile or so or you can call a cab."

Frankly, contestants are needed at all levels: beginning, intermediate and advanced players, in banjo, fiddle, mandolin, guitar, and "other instruments." Signups are at the gate, and the contest rules, a few of which may be new this year, can be found on the web site at

http://stowhouse.com/events/fiddlers-festival/

Festival producers want us to encourage all acoustic musicians to enter the contests. They tell us, "It's extremely important that we continue to support this event, which has been going for 44 years, as attendees and as contestants. If there are insufficient entries in some categories, those categories may be dropped."

MUSIC CONFERENCE /TRADE SHOW,
in OC (Anaheim):
The 2016 “NAMM SHOW” is the music industry’s biggest annual trade show, music conference, and gathering of music retailers with manufactures and endorsed musicians who very notably perform. It features opportunities for music educators, school administrators, college students, and NAMM Foundation Partners to attend, learn and connect with the music products industry. People in all those categories will be able to register for badges and reserve hotel rooms starting September 30, 2015. Mark your calendar and plan ahead, so you’ll have all your information ready to reserve your room. As the promo proclaims, “The music begins at The NAMM Show — and for that reason, it attracts the world's most powerful buyers.”

The basics... NAMM completely takes-over the Anaheim Convention Center and all the meeting and convention spaces in the surrounding hotels. The Convention Center is located at 800 W Katella Av, Anaheim, CA 92802.

The daily schedules are:
√ Thursday, Jan 21, 10 am–6 pm
√ Friday, Jan 22, 10 am–6 pm
√ Saturday, Jan 23, 10 am–6 pm
√ Sunday, Jan 24, 10 am–5 pm √ Hall E and Level 2 open at 9:30 am

Information on the 2016 NAMM Show grows rather regularly at:

https://www.namm.org/thenammshow/2016

Let’s note that playing the NAMM Show really does mean “playing THE NAMM SHOW.” As in, going through the process outlined above, becoming part of the music industry’s most celebrated scene, and enjoying the enhanced credibility that brings. We add that because every year we are surprised by who is sponsoring an event at NAMM, or by who is trying to lure us away from the Big Show to a concurrent show of their own. And well, that’s a happy surprise when it’s one of the first case. And it’s often rolling our eyes in surprise at the second case; that includes wondering how anyone doing an unaffiliated performance expects the NAMM crowd to leave expensive parking to drive to their guerrilla show, then hope to find a space in the garage (and pay again) back at the NAMM Show.

It may help to know that NAMM has a simple and clear policy about such things. Here it is:

“Planning to host an event at the NAMM Show? This is just a friendly reminder that when creating and promoting your event during NAMM in and around Anaheim, there are a couple of rules to follow.

√ “Events taking place at an Anaheim venue are only approved for use by NAMM member companies.

√ “The use of the NAMM name, logo, and/or font in the title of your event is prohibited. The NAMM name may be used in your promotion only to reference that your event is occurring during the dates of NAMM show. This will ensure everybody is clear about who is producing the event. All NAMM produced events take place at the Anaheim Convention Center, Grand Plaza, and Hilton or Marriott. Other events are not official NAMM events and should not be promoted as such.

√ “If NAMM is mentioned anywhere in the promotion, please add “Event produced by XYZ company and NAMM has no affiliation with or liability for this event.”

Keep this link handy for reference as you dream and scheme...

https://www.namm.org/thenammshow/2016/articles/important-information-about-namm-show-events

And waste no time applying to do a gen-you-wine, officially-sanctioned NAMM SHOW performance.

Wed, Sep 30,
OPENING DAY,
in L.A.:
The GRAMMY Museum's newest exhibit, "GEORGE CARLIN: A PLACE FOR MY STUFF," commemorating the late GRAMMY-winning comedian, at the Grammy Museum, 800 W Olympic Bl (entrance on Figueroa), L.A.

Fri, Oct 2, FREE, at USC:
7:30 pm “THE GLOAMING: A VISIONS AND VOICES SIGNATURE EVENT" in Bovard Auditorium, 3501 Trousdale Parkway, Los Angeles 90089; on the University Park Campus at USC, adjacent to Exposition Park in L.A.

THE GLOAMING, the Irish-music supergroup created a 2014 self-titled debut album that thrilled critics and audiences alike, landing on “best of the year” lists around the world. IARLA Ó LIONÁIRD, MARTIN HAYES, CAOIMHÍN Ó RAGHALLAIGH, DENNIS CAHILL, and THOMAS BARTLETT a.k.a. DOVEMAN. The latter is a sean-nós singer, the rest comprise two fiddlers, a guitarist, and a pianist. And together they reinvigorate an ancient musical tradition with thoroughly modern innovation. With lyrics drawn from historic and contemporary Irish literature, THE GLOAMING reworks Irish music while remaining faithfully connected to its roots. By turns rousing and ethereal, THE GLOAMING offers “a staggering display of both emotion and virtuosity” – The Guardian.

Prior to the performance, JOANNA DEMERS, associate professor in the USC Thornton School of Music, hosts a pre-show conversation with MARTIN HAYES. More on the event and the series at:

The evening features a pre-show conversation at 7:30, then the concert at 8 pm.

8 pm  JIM WHITE, with Red House Records recording artist CHARLIE PARR in support, plays McCabe's, 3101 Pico Bl, Santa Monica 90405; 310-828-4497; www.mccabes.com

This L.A. show just added CHARLIE PARR on Friday, Sep 25, so we'll concentrate on him. Charlie is on tour for his latest album, "Stumpjumper."

Duluth, Minnesota cult hero Charlie Parr's latest album, "Stumpjumper," has been chosen as one of the best roots / folk albums of the summer by Rhapsody. His raw acoustic folk blues and blistering picking have brought him a following that crosses fans of all ages — his vivid narratives and hard luck protagonists reflect his working-class upbringing in rural Minnesota and his straight take on life.

Long a part of the vibrant Duluth, MN, music scene that prominently includes Alan Sparhawk and Low, and Trampled by Turtles, Charlie changed-it-up this time, traveling to rural North Carolina to record "Stumpjumper" with fellow musician Phil Cook (Megafaun, Hiss Golden Messenger).

Charlie joined Cook and a cast of local players, setting up in an old outbuilding on the “Down Yonder Farm” in rural North Carolina. As well as being the first album Charlie has recorded outside of his native Minnesota, "Stumpjumper" is also his first full-band album.

Charlie grew up in the Hormel meatpacking city of Austin, MN (population 25,000) where most of the world's favorite tinned meat — yep, the legendary Spam — is still manufactured.

(Ironically, he doesn't eat meat.) The combination of growing up with both parents working proud union jobs in an industrial meat factory and his largely rural environment had a broad impact on Parr. That comes through in his songs, as well as being surrounded by music — his father's record collection (Charley Patton and Lightnin' Hopkins, Woody Guthrie and Leadbelly) and his older sister's (Captain Beefheart, rock'n'roll). These days, he spends most of his time on the road, cooking his meals on his engine manifold on his way to his next gig.

More on Charlie at www.charlieparr.com and www.redhouserecords.com/artists/charlie-parr.

Sat, Oct 10, in L.A.:
7:30 pm JESSICA PRATT plays her "psychedelic folk" music for the "Saturday Nights at the Getty" series at the Getty Center, 1200 Getty Center Dr, Los Angeles. (Appr'x 12 miles NW of downtown Los Angeles.)

Jessica Pratt is a singer-songwriter whose singular voice and transfixing, intimate performances are rooted in a California psychedelic folk tradition. However, the acoustic dream-pop meditations on her album "On Your Own Love Again" go beyond straightforward folk sounds, with a distinctly British perspective that evokes the high-pitched eccentricities of Kate Bush, the delicate pop melodies of early Marianne Faithfull, and the lingering introspection of Nick Drake.

While living in San Francisco, Pratt worked in relative obscurity, making bedroom recordings. She was discovered and championed by Tim Presley, the mastermind behind the excellent psychedelic rock outfit White Fence, who famously put up his entire life savings to release Pratt's first record. Its follow up, On Your Own Love Again, was released by the storied independent label Drag City, making her labelmates with figures like Bill Callahan, Joanna Newsom, and Bonnie "Prince" Billy.

Pratt's songwriting contains an intoxicating warmth and manages to take conventional pop hooks, interpreted with craft and humor, and push them into weird, otherworldly places. As NPR wrote, "With little more than a weary sigh, Pratt flips the banal into the magical; she makes listeners wonder about the circumstances she describes. There's more. You can feel it in the pauses, the implications, the breath."

Appearing on the heels of a national tour with indie luminaries Beach House, Jessica Pratt will perform in the architecturally striking Harold M. Williams Auditorium, a space distinctly receptive to quietly compelling and nuanced performances.

Sat, Oct 10, in Culver City:
8 pm FRONT COUNTRY plays Boulevard Music, 4316 Sepulveda Bl, Culver City 90230; 310-398-2583; www.boulevardmusic.com

"Front Country is the best new bluegrass band out there... period. But to call them just bluegrass misses the mark by a wide margin. They're progressive yet organic with a sound that's brand new but familiar at the same time. Their upcoming album 'Sake Of The Sound' is a great listen front to back." — TIM CARBONE, Railroad Earth.

Formed in 2011 as a collective of the Bay Area’s finest young acoustic talent, Adam Roszkiewicz, Jacob Groopman, Jordan Klein, Leif Karlstrom, Melody Walker and Zach Sharpe joined forces to play a monthly gig with friends in San Francisco’s Mission District. They quickly found a musical rapport that was open to challenging arrangements, unique covers and original songwriting. Since then, they have continued to expand their repertoire and push the boundaries of bluegrass on the national scene.

In 2012 they won the "Rockygrass" band competition in Colorado, and followed up in 2013 with a win at the mega-wonderful "Telluride Bluegrass Festival," becoming the third band in history to win both contests.

Also in 2013, lead singer Melody Walker won the "Chris Austin Songwriting Competition" at North Carolina's "Merlefest," and mandolinist Adam Roszkiewicz was nominated for a Grammy for his work with the Modern Mandolin Quartet on their album, "Americana."

2013 and early 2014 has seen Front Country break onto the national scene with festival performances at Rockygrass, Old Settlers Music Festival, Wintergrass, Grass Valley Bluegrass Festival, and many others, along with headlining performances at the Great American Music Hall in San Francisco.

In addition to performances at Telluride, Summergrass and IBMA's Wide Open Bluegrass Festival, 2014 saw the release of their highly anticipated debut album, "Sake of the Sound," last September. Chris Pandolfi of the Infamous Stringdusters says of the album, "Front Country have arrived, the latest acoustic ambassadors to emerge from the California coast. This first album will certainly serve them well, meeting all the technical criteria without getting lost in, focusing instead on the substance of these great songs. They represent their roots well, both musical and geographical, but the door is clearly open to transcend both. With 'Sake of the Sound,' Front Country are well on their way"

"Front Country draw on the ever valuable lessons of bluegrass while making music that is distinctly their own........Front Country have arrived, the latest acoustic ambassadors to emerge from the California coast." — Chris Pandolfi (Infamous Stringdusters).

"Front Country's willingness to stretch the bluegrass boundary while maintaining the acoustic integrity of the music will solidify them as one of the top new bands on the acoustic /bluegrass scene." — Woody Platt (Steep Canyon Rangers).

Mon, Oct 12, in Altadena:
8 pm Scotland’s TANNAHILL WEAVERS play the Coffee Gallery Backstage, 2029 N Lake, Altadena. Reservations by phone only (10 am-10 pm, 7 days) at 626-798-6236.

Bob Stane hadn’t yet announced this show when we first published this. Jump on it before it sells-out.

The TANNAHILL WEAVERS are one of Scotland's premier traditional bands. Their diverse repertoire spans the centuries with fire-driven instrumentals, topical songs, original ballads and lullabies, and humorous tales of life in Scotland. Their music demonstrates to old and young alike the rich and varied musical heritage of the Celtic people. These versatile musicians have received worldwide accolades consistently over the years for their exuberant performances and outstanding recording efforts that seemingly can't get better... yet continue to do just that.

Born of a session in Paisley, Scotland and named for the town's historic weaving industry and local poet laureate ROBERT TANNAHILL, the group has made an international name for its special brand of Scottish music, blending the beauty of traditional melodies with the power of modern rhythms. Over the years “The Tannies” have been trailblazers for Scottish music, and their tight harmonies and powerful, inventive arrangements have won them fans from beyond the folk and Celtic music scenes – their versatile piper LORNE MacDOUGALL arranged and performed for for the 2012 Disney Pixar movie "Brave" under the leadership of PATRICK DOYLE, and for Dreamworks’ “How to Train Your Dragon 2." They are firmly established as one of the premier groups on the concert stage; from reflective ballads to footstomping reels and jigs, the variety and range of the material they perform is matched only by their enthusiasm and lively Celtic spirits.

"An especially eloquent mixture of the old and the new." - New York Times.

“These guys are a bunch of heroes every time they go on tour in the states.” - Garrison Keillor, A Prairie Home Companion.

“…their great humour and superb musicianship make them one of the finest bands on the circuit.” - Rogue Folk Review.

“The music may be pure old time Celtic, but the drive and enthusiasm are akin to straight ahead rock and roll.” - Winnipeg Free Press.

Fast on the heels of her “Cornwall Folk Festival” performance on the 29th of August, Sarah is flying to the US for a two-month, coast-to-coast, 36-show tour, then returning to Jolly Ol’ just in time to play the first of her 22 UK dates, starting October 30th.

We really like this artist. Her latest concept is based on thoughtful analysis of what’s happening to music and how that keeps everyone from hearing a complete record, as we all once did. In this digital era, “listening to a record” has become a near-nonexistent phenomenon; even CD purchases tend to go straight onto an iPod from which tracks will pop up at random. UK-based singer-songwriter SARAH McQUAID was keen to ensure that her fourth solo album, “Walking into White,” got at least a few full-length listens before being subsumed into playlists – so she’s performing the whole thing live, track by track, as the first half of each concert on her forthcoming September-October US tour.

“Sarah McQuaid has clearly held true to her own musical vision,” wrote Helen Gregory in Folk Radio UK, “and it’s to be hoped that ‘Walking into White’ is the album which will bring her the wider commercial success she so richly deserves.”

Belgian blogger Michel Preumont (concerts-review.over-blog.com) described it as “Original, acrobatique et audacieux ... Un album brillant ouvrant de nouvelles perspectives pour Sarah McQuaid.” (“Original, acrobatic and audacious ... A brilliant album that opens new perspectives for Sarah McQuaid”).

She’s quite literally playing the whole country this time around. Fortunately, we get several chances to see her in the Southern half of California:

Sat, Oct 17, in Culver City:
8 pm RICHARD SMITH plus TONY FURTADO (TRIO) plays Boulevard Music, 4316 Sepulveda Bl, Culver City 90230; 310-398-2583; www.boulevardmusic.com

RICHARD SMITH is one of the greatest guitar players on the planet. Incredible fingerstyle player (National Fingerstyle Guitar Champion) and, also, one of the hottest Bebop/Django/Flatpicking players in the world, Richard Smith presents an evening of Travis picking, ragtime, jazz, and classical.

His playing ranges from amazing to flashy and beautiful. Here are a couple of quotes regarding Richard — from Chet Atkins and Jerry Reed:

“The most amazing guy I know on the guitar. He can play anything I know, only better.” — Chet Atkins, CGP.

Richard Smith owns many instruments, but his most prized is a guitar, which has written on it, “To my hero, Richard” — signed, Jerry Reed.

And Chet Atkins Mandell says "Two Thumbpicks Up! Way up."

About TONY FURTADO...

“Tony Furtado is a major musical force without a doubt. He has his black-belt in voice and bottleneck guitar and his banjo playing scares the crap out of me.” — David Lindley, musical adventurer.

Very few musicians of any stripe so personify a musical genre as completely as Tony Furtado embodies Americana roots music. Tony is an evocative and soulful singer, a wide-ranging songwriter and a virtuoso multi-instrumentalist adept on banjo, cello-banjo, slide guitar and baritone ukulele who mixes and matches sounds and styles with the flair of a master chef (he’s also an accomplished sculptor, but that’s another story).

All of the music of America is in Tony’s music. Relix hit the nail on the head when writing of Tony: “True talent doesn’t need categories.”

A native of Pleasanton, California, who now makes his home in Portland, Oregon, Tony Furtado took up the banjo at age 12, inspired by the "Beverly Hillbillies" TV show and a sixth grade music report. He first attracted national attention in 1987 when he won the "National Bluegrass Banjo Championship" in Winfield, Kansas. Not long after that, Tony opted for the life of a full-time professional musician, joining Laurie Lewis & Grant Street. A second victory at Winfield, in 1991, bookended his years with Grant Street.

In 1990, Tony signed a recording deal with Rounder Records, one of the country’s preeminent independent record companies. Beginning with Swamped in 1990, he recorded six critically acclaimed albums for the label, collaborating with such master musicians as Alison Krauss, Jerry Douglas, Tim O’Brien, Stuart Duncan, Kelly Joe Phelps and Mike Marshall. During this period, Tony also performed and recorded with the band Sugarbeat and the Rounder Banjo Extravaganza with Tony Trischka and Tom Adams.

Beginning in the late 1990s—influenced by such musical heroes as Ry Cooder, David Lindley and Taj Mahal—Tony added slide guitar, singing and songwriting to his musical toolbox and began leading his own band. He is a tireless road musician who performs in a dizzying variety of formats: solo, in a duo or trio or with his full five-person band. He especially values the opportunities he has had to tour with such legendary musicians as Gregg Allman and with such esteemed slide guitarists as David Lindley, Derek Trucks and Sonny Landreth.

Tony has performed throughout the world at top venues and appeared at such prestigious music festivals as the Telluride Bluegrass Festival, High Sierra Music Festival, Jazz Aspen, Kerrville Folk Festival, Strawberry Music Festival, Winnipeg Folk Festival, Sisters Folk Festival, San Jose Jazz Festival and countless others. “I love playing live,” he says. “All my energy is focused on the love of playing music and rolling with the moment. It’s a give and take from the audience to the stage, and back. And the music that is created is something that otherwise might not occur without that flow.”

Tony has recorded and produced almost a dozen CDs for various labels such as Dualtone, What Are Records and Funzalo Records. Tony enthusiastically describes his newest CD, The Bell, as “the most personal of my career.” To be released this summer on his own YousayFurtado Records, The Bell is an important release for several reasons: it represents a return to Tony’s banjo-playing roots, with the banjo and cello-banjo more prominent than in recent years; the original songs concern such weighty themes as the loss of his father, the birth of his son and his own creative rebirth with the move to a new record label and management team; his working band is featured; and, most important of all, this is the first album in a long time on which Tony had complete artistic control. It’s his music, done his way. ( Jon Hartley Fox ) www.richardsmithmusic.com www.tonyfurtado.com

Sun, Oct 25, in Altadena:
7 pm THE FRETLESS brings Celtic & Irish music from a hot act, with international flavor and the highest degrees from Berklee College Of Music, to play the Coffee Gallery Backstage, 2029 N Lake Av, Altadena 91001. Reservations, 626-798-6236.

Bob Stane, the venue's impresario, really feels his oats when he books an act of this caliber. He asks, "Are you aware of the multi-Grammy Award acts that grace the stage of The Coffee Gallery Backstage? And stars from all over the world who migrate here? And highly talented and intelligent 'pick of the litter' acts from music schools such as Berklee ? This is the center of high music art. Good music. Good music and stagecraft."

"THE FRETLESS bring CELTIC & IRISH with degrees from Berklee School of music. Phenoms that swing it. String Quartet. Champions in exciting fields.

"THE FRETLESS are a young and innovative band that melds the worlds of Celtic, folk and chamber music into an amazing and unique sound they like to call rad trad. They may look like a string quartet, but with innovative arrangements and roots deeply based in Celtic and Canadian fiddle styles, The Fretless is creating their own unique path in the music world.

"Three members of The Fretless (Ivonne, Karrnnel and Trent) met many many years ago in the Canadian fiddling and step dancing competition circuit and quickly became great friends and each others best competition. It was only natural that they would all go on to end up individually making names for themselves as Canada's top fiddlers. Winning such awards as BC Provincial Fiddle Champion multiple times (Trent & Ivonne), Saskatchewan Provincial fiddle Champion four times (Karrnnel), Canadian National Fiddle Championship finalists (Trent, Ivonne & Karrnnel), Grand North American Fiddle Champion five times (Ivonne) and finalists (Trent & Karrnnel), European Fiddle Champion (Ivonne); it is clear how they would continue on to much musical success.

"Ivonne and Trent went on to study at the prestigious Berklee College of Music in Boston, MA, USA. It was there that they met Eric. It's not often that you see a cellist that can play trad and Irish music. They quickly bonded and ended up graduating Magna Cum Laude (that's with honors) in 2 degrees in Professional Music (Trent & Eric) and a dual major of Music Business & Management and Performance (Ivonne). Collectively they have earned the following prestigious awards:

√ 2014 CFMA Ensemble of the Year
√ 2014 WCMA Instrumental Album of the Year
√ 2012 CFMA Ensemble of the Year
√ 2012 CFMA Instrumental Group of the Year

3 pm  THE ROLAND WHITE BAND — he of The Kentucky Colonels, Bill Monroe & the Bluegrass Boys, Lester Flatt & The Nashville Grass, Country Gazette, and The Nashville Bluegrass Band — brings his own Grammy-nominated band to the intimate Coffee Gallery Backstage, 2029 N Lake Av, Altadena; www.coffeegallery.com

THE ROLAND WHITE BAND in its West Coastand touring incarnation features Diane Bouska on guitar & vocals, Herb Pedersen on banjo & vocals, Bill Bryson on bass & vocals, Blaine Sprouse on fiddle, and leader Roland White on mandolin.

After a distinguished career devoted to playing bluegrass in several of the most popular and influential groups in the music’s history, Roland White embarked on another chapter of personal musical discovery, fronting his own bluegrass group in the form of The Roland White Band. And really, it was the only thing he still hadn't done.

Roland is known as one of the few unique stylists on the mandolin, with his own unmistakable sound and touch. His gifts as a musician have delighted audiences everywhere: his vitality, soul, and infectious rhythm enable him to speak and even dance through his instrument. Add to this his mastery of ensemble playing, harmonic sophistication, and warm voice guided by a subtle and swinging sense of phrasing, and you have the legend of bluegrass that Roland has become.

Springing from a large family of musicians, they formed The Kentucky Colonels, whose influence has far exceeded the band’s short tenure as an active band. Their "Appalachian Swing" album remains one of the most influential albums of that era. Roland’s tradition-based yet imaginative mandolin playing alongside Clarence’s breathtaking guitar virtuosity cemented this as an indispensable album in any true bluegrass aficionado’s collection. During the years the Kentucky Colonels were together, they featured such great musicians as Roger Bush, Billy Ray Lathum, Leroy Mack, Bobby Slone, and the legendary fiddler Scott Stoneman. And Roland, after The Kentucky Colonels?

Roland became guitarist for Bill Monroe & the Bluegrass Boys in the late '60s, absorbing the traditional feel and repertoire from the acknowledged "Father Of Bluegrass" that remains a strong element in his music today. Roland's tenure included several landmark recording sessions as a Bluegrass Boy, among them "The Gold Rush," "Is The Blue Moon Still Shining," "Crossing The Cumberlands," "Sally Goodin," "Kentucky Mandolin," and "The Walls Of Time." From Monroe’s band?

Roland moved on to that of another bluegrass pioneer, Lester Flatt, playing mandolin and recording several albums as a member of The Nashville Grass from 1969-1973.

He next spent thirteen years with the progressive west coast group Country Gazette, with such bluegrass luminaries as Byron Berline, Alan Munde, Joe Carr, and Roger Bush.

Then came the Nashville Bluegrass Band, who distinguished themselves as the premier bluegrass band of their generation, winning two Grammys andtheir earning Grammy nominations on every one of their albums. All that was left was Roland putting his own name up-front.

The Roland White Band’s debut album, "Jelly On My Tofu," was nominated for the "Best Bluegrass Album" Grammy in 2003. And plenty of fans of Roland's virtuosity, of the band, and of the best bluegrass music, will tell you that they just keep getting better.

For thirty years, Lee Ranaldo was the lead guitarist of Sonic Youth, one of the most influential and artistically sophisticated alternative rock bands of the recent era. Since the band's end in 2011, Ranaldo has been exploring new roles as a solo performer, leader of his new band The Dust, and beyond, to interdisciplinary collaborations in alternative venues like cathedrals and museums, often with his partner Leah Singer. Their recent live performances have been large-scale, multi-projection quadraphonic sound and cinema events. From performing on an electric guitar suspended from the ceiling and swinging over the audience, to rediscovering his love of acoustic folk music, Ranaldo's experimentalist spirit connects with music lovers across the spectrum, from classic rock to avant-garde.
