Why we’re here, on Blogger.com: after a long presence on MySpace, that site suddenly changed parameters to accept only short posts, so we had to endure a ponderous and VERY time-consuming process to list events in small increments, usually only one day at a time. It was too much, so we have begun posting the calendar and news here. We’ll see how it works, and if everyone adjusts and gives positive feedback, we’ll move here, and soon.
.
FUTURE EVENTS are posted into 2009, as are “BEST OUT-OF-TOWN (Beyond the L.A.-Area)” events. We update often, and we add a BUNCH of concerts, club gigs, workshops, and recurring events as we learn about them and as dates arrive.
.
LATEST NEWS FEATURES always post separately. The most recent edition posted July 19; the most recent previous News Features posted July 11; recent editions are available at http://acousticamericana.blogspot.com; older archived editions are available on the myspace page (www.myspace.com/laacoustic), by using the “View All” button and scrolling, and if you don’t see what you want, then journey farther back by using the “older entries” button and scrolling, as many times as necessary. You can go all the way back to when acoustic music was made by trees crashing to the floor of the primeval forests when the dinosaurs got too rambunctious.

AUGUST 2008
.
==============
.
Julius Caesar’s adopted nephew and heir, Gaius Julius Caesar Octavianus (known to us in today’s histories as Octavius Ceasar) was the first Roman Emperor to receive the title “Augustus,” meaning “reverend,” as bestowed by the Roman Senate. Then senators changed the name of their sixth month of their calendar from Sextilis to August to honor their leader. Augustus took a day from February to give his month 31 days, making it the same length as July, which honored Julius Caesar. (And you always wondered why February is so short.)

“Poem of the month” for August:
.
NO MATTER
.
No matter
How hot-burning
It is
Outside
.
When
.
You peel a
Long fat cucumber
.
Or
.
Cut deep into
A fresh ripe watermelon
.
You can
Feel
Coolness
Come into your hands.

Usually, I have a handful of solo artists, but this month, I thought I'd try something different. We're having three bands playing! And we will have one solo performer opening for them named, Richard Marchetta, guitarist extraordinaire. So far, there's still no cover to get in, so come on out and take advantage of that. We do ask for a small donation for our ‘Tip Jar,’ as we don't get paid for this gig, so just whatever you can throw in there would be much appreciated - for the gas tank, you know.

+
SONGS OF SHILOH is the concept album that lends its name to its creators, NICOLE GORDON & MARTY AXELROD, when they perform their thematic show. The two, plus Marty’s daughter ZOE, performed much of the album’s contents live on radio’s “Tied to the Tracks” during two live performance-interviews. Here’s a fan letter about them, to CGB impresario Bob Stane, from the Bower Family: “Hi Bob, Thanks for bringing back Songs of Shiloh. It is one of the reasons your venue is the best around. This act is great! The songs take you through the life of a young waitress with struggles and dreams that all generations have experienced. These songs are very well written and original. Nicole Gordon is stunning in her vocal talent and delivery. Marty Axelrod is excellent on the keyboards. The Songs of Shiloh is the very best of the Southern California music scene. If you haven't heard them you are missing out. These songs have haunted me. Thanks again for booking them. Kerry and Pat Bower.”
+
Plus, SABRINA & CRAIG, with over 75 years of musical experience between them, they tell us, “We came together to share our love of music, precise and poetic guitar voice, complex harmonies, and heartfelt connection. If you like variety, we've got a great combination of original songs and unique covers that we can't wait to share with you.” Garret Swayne, host of the weekly “Main Street Songwriter’s Showcase” in Woodland Hills, says they are, "… keeping the tradition of contemporary folk music alive and well in a very pure form, with wry, thoughtful observations of a life rich with experience and passion. Honest-to-goodness Folk artists, real ‘humdinger folksingers!’, as Dylan would say." Artists info, http://www.sabrinaandcraig.com/. $15.

Billing themselves as “America’s only Italian and Irish Band” and hailing from the historic Gold Rush Country of Central California’s Sierra foothills, the Black Irish Band has been together seventeen years. Their music is true to the landscape of the west, a tribute to the people whose lives were spent building the world we now take for granted. The band has a large compliment of traditional maritime and railroad music, as well as ethnic tunes. They excel at Irish, Italian, and American folk music with an assortment of fine originals and traditional western songs. To date, the band has produced 16 albums and recorded 82 originals.
+
While they capture the spirit of the immigrants, the men and women who tamed the Wild West, they also celebrate those who risk their lives to protect that land today. Their latest, “Into the Fire,” honors America’s firefighters, and has been heard on radio’s “Tied to the Tracks.”
+
The Black Irish Band played the 2005 Smithsonian Folklife Festival on the National Mall and in the Kennedy Center. They’ve been featured on CBS "This Morning," and headlined the 2000 International Music Festival in Singapore. They were the featured performers for the 100th Anniversaries of the Alaskan Gold Rush and White Pass & Yukon Railroad. Because of the historical nature of their material, their venues have included the Alaska History Museum, Golden Spike NHS, Gene Autry Museum, Elko Folklife Center, and the Maritime Museums in Los Angeles, San Diego, and San Francisco.
+
From the fire of the fiddle and accordion to the blend of five strong voices, the Black Irish Band is a class act, with 70,000 albums sold independently to date and 17 years performing together. “The Black Irish Band’s performance is of the highest order” - The Museum of America & the Sea. “The band's talent and drawing power has been a huge success for the museum!”- California State Railroad Museum, Sacramento. “The crowd at the University of Montana stood up for countless ovations!”- Billings Outpost. $15.

2 pm (Pacific) “ACOUSTIC HARMONY,” hosted by Mark Michaelis, from WGDR at 91.1 FM in the Green Mountains of Vermont, simulcast at http://www.wgdr.org/. Mark sometimes hosts folk and acoustic renaissance artists in-studio for all-acoustic performance-interviews. He says, “The focus is on contemporary and traditional folk, singer-songwriters and local artists, but a little of anything and everything might creep-in. Whether it's Celtic, bluegrass, world music or even rock or blues, as long as it's got beautiful harmonies and melodies you might here it here on a Saturday afternoon.” More info, playlists, and archived performance-interviews at http://www.acoustic-harmony.com/.

Saturdays, on web radio:
3-5 pm (Pacific) “A PRAIRIE HOME COMPANION” always features live performances and skits and stories with host GARRISON KEILLOR, a regular cast of recording artists, and guests, whether broadcasting from various live venues across America, or from its home base in Minnesota. This initial “live” broadcast tiume each weekend is standard everywhere, though repeat times vary by station. In L.A., the show is broadcast on KPCC 89.3 FM, and repeats Saturday night, 6-8 pm and Sunday Noon-2 pm. But if you’re in L.A., it’s much better to find a web simulcast from somewhere; that’s because KPCC has no other music shows and they do not know how to control the levels for music performances, causing frequent peaking and signal cut-out.

7 pm “ARTHUR MAGAZINE PRESENTS” HOWLIN’ RAIN and MARK FOSSON at McCabe’s, 3101 Pico Bl (Pico at 31st), Santa Monica; http://www.mccabes.com/; 310-828-4403. MARK FOSSON‘s music has been heard on radio’s “Tied to the Tracks.” HOWLIN’ RAIN is a quintet from Northern California whose second album, “Magnificent Fiend,” is said to feature "Snarling mercurial Jaguar guitars, wailing full-throttle Hammond B-3 organ and eight new mammoth rock and roll jams!" Record producer RICK RUBIN liked it enough to co-release it with the indy Birdman label, and now Howlin' Rain hits the McCabe’s stage as they tour in support of it. MARK FOSSON, meanwhile, is a completely different animal, as Rolling Stone tells us. "'Sign him quick' says guitarist John Fahey, who the venue calls, “a folk-blues alchemist of high standards and no bullshit.” Fahey wrote that sentiment in 1976, after hearing a demo by Mark Fosson, a Kentucky-born fingerpicker, who soon cut an album for Fahey's Takoma Records. But Fahey was then forced to sell the label, and Fosson's LP went unreleased — until now. Three decades later, Fosson's precise delicacy and melodic inventions on “The Lost Takoma Sessions” on the Drag City label, brightly confirm Fahey's original enthusiasm. Tix purchased online or by phone, add $4 svc chg, per order (not per ticket) to price shown. $12.

This interactive program includes a brief history lesson of each musical style, a dynamic performance with selected children invited to the stage, and an opportunity for children to ask questions of the performers. Monday Morning Concerts for Children serves 6,500 young students each season.

8 pm “PIERRE BENSUSAN’S WORLD” at the Coffee Gallery Backstage, 2029 N Lake Av, Altadena; info, http://www.coffeegallery.com/; reserv, 626-398-7917. PIERRE BENSUSAN is a solo performer, electro-acoustic guitar, voice. If "world music" is music that pays tribute to the spirit of a collection of human beings through distinct rhythms, traditional instruments and harmonic colors, Pierre Bensusan can be recognized as one of the most eloquent and diverse world musicians of our time. One reviewer wrote, “One look at Bensusan on-stage, barring chords while stretching five, sometimes six, frets, is usually enough to make even the most well-versed jazz aficionado stop in their tracks. As technically impressive as his simultaneous execution of a colorful melody, active bass line, unique harmonic choices, and eclectic rhythms, it is the music that Bensusan himself hears that drives the mechanics of his body. There is a sense of something both playful and serious in his work, an unparalleled sense of freedom in his compositions and his improvisations. Freedom is Bensusan and the music he channels without any apparent musical boundaries.” $22.

GILLI MOON is an Australian singer, songwriter, recording artist, pianist, actor, producer, author, painter, motivator, entrepreneur, visionary and empowering community builder. She has been in Los Angeles for 8 years. Her restless creativity and rebellious nature continually urge her to push the envelope in the studio, on stage and with whatever she touches. She's an illustrious, energetic poly-media artist and her multifaceted albums and dynamic, entertaining live shows have touched music lovers worldwide garnering high praise from the most jaded of critics, including Newsweek Magazine earlier this year. http://www.gillimoon.com/ & www.myspace.com/gillimoon

AMY RAASCH came to songwriting as a surprise. She had needed to learn a couple of basic guitar chords when cast as a folksinger in an indie film, and shocked everyone on set (including herself) by spontaneously writing her first song -- which went on to become her character's theme song. Cut to her debut album, "Love or Inertia," which made several "Best of 2007" lists, and caused Music Connection to name her "One of the Top Unsigned Artists in Los Angeles. Tune into YouTube for her current project, "52 Songs in 52 Weeks," and sign the mailing list at amyraasch.com for updates. http://www.amyraasch.com/ & www.myspace.com/amyraasch

ROBBY LONGLEY is an amazingly talented and personable musician. One reviewer wrote, “The title of this review should really be ‘Hands of Glory,’ because that is exactly what Robby Longley has. Robby’s neo-classical/flamenco guitar filled the Center and each of us lucky enough to be at tonight’s concert with sheer wonder. Robby didn’t play music, he channeled music. The music came from his very essence and filled the space and each listener with awe as his fingers blurred across the guitar. ‘Evangeline,’ named for the Longfellow poem, was a musical tour-de-force. Robby swept us up into the music and we were still in another world when the final note died away. ‘Bourbon St. Burlesque’ had us believing were in New Orleans with a bass rhythm that was finger-snapping.”

Opening is SWAY, described as bringing “Catchy, radio-friendly, original country songs, sweet three-part harmony, and an infectious energy on stage make every SWAY performance a must-see.” Featuring GINA QUARTARO on vocals and guitar, PERRY MARTIN on vocals and guitar, LAURENS VERNOT on bass guitar and background vocals, and TREVOR HANDS on drums, they are an OC-based group adding new fans. $15.

Bike valet starts at 6:30 pm on concert nights, offering safe and convenient parking for thousands of bikes. Santa Monica Pier is wheelchair accessible.
+
Two stellar Americana artists: MICHELLE SHOCKED brings her "Mighty Sound" to the Pier along with the first-ever performance in Los Angeles by MIKE FARRIS, as the L.A. stop in a series of engagements that include Bonnaroo, Strawberry Music Festival, Hardly Strictly in Golden Gate Park, and TV’s “Austin City Limits.” MICHELLE SHOCKED is one of the true originators of what is now commonly referred to as “Americana” music. She is an artist possessed of an iconoclastic, restless and always independent and adventurous creative spirit. Michelle releases "Soul to My Soul," a collection of all new songs, this Fall. The new album is the follow-up to her 2007 live gospel set "ToHeavenURide," recorded at the Telluride Bluegrass Festival.
+
MIKE FARRIS’ journey brings him from lead singer in the SCREAMIN' CHEETAH WHEELIES to his tent-revival of an album, "Salvation in Lights." Recorded at the same Nashville house-studio where White Stripes / Raconteurs leader Jack White recorded Loretta Lynn's award-winning Van Lear Rose album, "Salvation in Lights" uses the musical language of spirituals, timeless stories of struggle, some of which are centuries-old slave spirituals, and soul to tell a uniquely redemptive story. Free.

8 pm JOHN McEUEN at the Coffee Gallery Backstage, 2029 N Lake Av, Altadena; info, http://www.coffeegallery.com/; reserv, 626-398-7917. In the middle of summer touring with the NITTY GRITTY DIRT BAND, John McEuen takes a night at the Coffee Gallery in Altadena (voted the #1 cool place in the area to go for 'night things'). Along with his hot picker-singer-writer son NATHAN McEUEN, John brings his banjo, guitar, mandolin, fiddle, and news from the road and “the rest of the world,” as well as some new and old favorite songs.
+
In the midst of another busy year, John will have three documentary films in the market this year for which he wrote the music score (“Sizzle - A Global Warming Comedy;” “Maynard Dixon - Art and Spirit;” “The Last Cowboy”) and can be seen on the road either in his solo shows (about 48 cities this year) or in his 42nd year with the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band (and Capitol just released a remake of “Mr. Bojangles” by NGDB with Keith Urban and Dierks Bentley). McEuen's XM radio show (“Acoustic Traveller” - channel 15) begins its 4th year. This July, he also started an album production with his lifelong friend, actor STEVE MARTIN, of Martin's original music, for release in 2009.
+
John McEuen says "the Steve album is coming along great! People will be shocked at how vast and varied his music is, and how hot he plays. Although known as a musician usually as an aside comment like 'oh, I've seen him play banjo... pretty good', this album will show Steve as a composer of unique hot and soulful music, and as a songwriter with an unusal twist for lyrics".
+
John continues, “Although Martin's yet-to-be-titled album is mainly instrumental, and features such diverse talents as David Amram, Earl Scruggs, McEuen, Craig Eastman and singers Vince Gill and Tim O'Brien, it is hard to pigeonhole as to 'style.' Americana folk traditional instruments are brought to Steve's world of notes where you will hear strains that combine influences to both of them from their past - Disneyland, Knott's Berry Farm, The Music Man, Copeland's Appalachian Spring, and bluegrass.”

That’s representative of what John describes when he’s on-stage here. These shows always sell out, so call early if you have missed one in the past. Venue impresario Bob Stane adds, “This time, he will be all alone, showing what the solo John McEuen is all about. His NGDB started here in Pasadena, with their first hit on KRLA in 1967 kicking off a music career that has taken John to over 4,000 different venues, 7,000 shoes ... and shows.”
+
Although a Southern Cal native, it has been said this innovator in country rock and folk (he instigated the famous ‘Will the Circle Be Unbroken’ album) has also created "...some of the most deft and impeccably tasteful music to come out of Nashville" (Chicago Tribune).Learn more at http://www.johnmceuen.com/. Bob Stane adds, “if you go to this show, you will be telling many the next day, ‘you should've been there!’" $20.

Proprietress Nancy Tessier’s father, Refugio "Coco" Lopez, plays alto, and she wanted her club to feature an array of jazz singers. This led to a fortuitous connection with Dale Boatman, founder and president of the California Jazz Arts Society. CalJAS is a powerful force in bringing some of the best jazz artists in Southern California, especially singers, to restaurants, clubs and other performance spaces in eastern Los Angeles County and the Inland Empire, an area that previously had relatively few opportunities for jazz musicians to perform.

Thu, Jul 31:
8:30 pm ROSE ROSSI at The Roxy, 9009 Sunset Blvd., L.A. 90069. Rose is an adult contemporary singer-songwriter. “…Just short of hard rock but with way more heft than today's poppier acts, there's something classic about Rossi's sound; and there's definitely something that's all its own.” - Bob Strauss, LA Daily News.
+
ROSE ROSSI creates believable, soulful music that can be lilting and sweet…but with a distinctive edge. Her debut CD, “Hello to You” (Brodsky Entertainment) was released April 29 and is achieving success on A/C radio and in the press. “…Out of nowhere, a thoughtful, original artist in the making is on display here, and this enjoyable disc is well worth seeking out.” -- Bob Smith, “Good Times.” Probably an electric show, but interesting.
