WHY WE’RE ON BLOGSPOT.COM: after a long presence on MySpace, that site suddenly changed parameters to accept only short posts, now requiring a ponderous and VERY time-consuming process to list events in small increments. It’s far too time-consuming. So we began posting the calendar and news on Blogspot. We’ll see how this works, and we welcome your feedback, at tiedtothetracks@hotmail.com .

Today is NELSON MANDELA’s 90th Birthday! An iconic civil rights leader who spent decades in a South African prison, opposing apartheid, he was elected president of the country once racial separation was finally banned. He once retired from politics, then returned, announcing he had “retired from retirement.” He remains one of the world’s great voices for peace.

7-9 pm CHRIS VALENTI, SCOTT VINCI, MANDY STECKELBERG, & ERIC SCHWARTZ (aka Smooth E; there are two Eric Schwartz’s out there) play the “STRINGS OF COMEDY” show right after Happy Hour at Molly Malone’s, 575 S Fairfax Av, L.A.; 323-935-1577; www.mollymalonesla.com. Chris has performed his wickedly funny comedic songs on radio’s “Tied to the Tracks.” He tells us, “July seems to be a dangerous month for me. Last year, I accidentally tore-open my left cornea in a horrible post office accident. This year, 30 seconds in the ocean left me with 15 stitches on my face, a dandy new scar, and an agent's demand for new headshots. If you love gory footage, I cut a little one-minute video of the ordeal and posted it on my site. BILL DOBBINS is a veteran singer-songwriter from the ‘60s and ‘70s who pursued a career as a photographer, writer and video maker, but never stopped singing and writing songs. He’s performed the legendary venues – Folk City, The Bitter End, Cafe Wha? and Izzy Young's Folklore Center, playing with folkies Emmylou Harris, Arlo Guthrie, John Hammond, Phil Ochs, and Ramblin Jack Elliott. www.billdobbinsmusic.com

JOHN STOWERS won a 2004 Billboard World Song Contest award. His "Jimmy's Song" won 3rd place in the R&B/Blues category. Growing-up in rural Missouri and unable to tune-in radio stations from surrounding cities, he listened to his older brother's classic rock and soul collection. He draws from rich musical history when writing his songs, and you hear echoes of everything from Liverpool to Memphis in his music. www.johnstowers.com

SIUAN MACGAHAN is a former engineer at NASA who became “disgruntled with practicality and always dreamed of painting and playing music.” One day, she bought an electric guitar and decided to quit her illustrious career. Sit where you can watch his hands. (That’s rather easy to do in the intimate surroundings of this venue.) One reviewer wrote, “ROBBY LONGLEY is an amazingly talented and personable musician. The title of this review should really be ‘Hands of Glory,’ because that is exactly what Robby Longley has. Robby’s neo-classical/flamenco guitar filled the Center and each of us lucky enough to be at tonight’s concert with sheer wonder. Robby didn’t play music, he channeled music. The music came from his very essence and filled the space and each listener with awe as his fingers blurred across the guitar. ‘Evangeline,’ named for the Longfellow poem, was a musical tour de force. Robby swept us up into the music and we were still in another world when the final note died away. ‘Bourbon St. Burlesque’ had us believing were in New Orleans with a bass rhythm that was finger-snapping.”

We know you know all about the world-famous Coffee Gallery Backstage, with it’s world-class performers, but what about The Coffee Gallery Front-Stage? They have a free stage in the front of the coffeehouse. 8 pm MARINA V plays in a “Live at the Lounge” showcase at the Comedy & Magic Club in Hermosa Beach, 1018 Hermosa Av (10th St & Pier Av) Hermosa Beach 90254; www.liveatthelounge.com. The delightful MARINA V is a multi-instrumental (guitar, keyboard, voice) Russian émigré who you have heard perform live on radio’s “Tied to the Tracks.” Classically trained, her music combines the sensibilities of a true composer with the sensitivity of a fine singer-songwriter who expresses her understanding of the world in fluent and often moving English.
