Here’s the last of November’s events, highlighted by the fact that the editor is once again making his “SHOW-OF-THE-WEEK” picks(!) for those who have asked (and those who haven’t). PLUS, some before-the-listings NEWS, and our popular “Heads-Up for advance tickets” listings.

It’s all here for you, at http://acousticamericana.blogspot.com

FIRST, a bit of NEWS:

.
ENJOY LIVE MUSIC WHILE YOU BUY ALL YOUR HOLIDAY JUNK (ER, GIFTS)
+
It’s the age-pld dilemma. They’re a couple. She’s addicted to recreational shopping, and he’d rather have a root canal than be dragged along. The Guide offers a solution. Beginning this weekend, there are events where merchants offer music and other pleasant amenities to lure shoppers. Check out the events in Old Pasadena this weekend, beginning at noon Saturday (see the Guide’s listing). He can oogle the Rose Parade Queen and Princesses, she can spend herself into credit card hell, and both can enjoy music and various treats. More of the same happens in Santa Monica on Dec 4, and no doubt elsewhere. As we learn of more events with live acoustic music, we’ll let you know.

LEFTOVER TURKEY RECIPE FROM MURPHY’S FLAW
+
They’ve won in the top three more than once at the prestigious Topanga Banjo Fiddle Contest, and you’ve heard their music on radio’s “Tied to the Tracks.” They’re musically exciting with plenty of entertaining banter, delivering a fun mix of bluegrass / newgrass and whatever else emerges from their bag of tricks. As you read the following, keep in mind that they are know for their forays into the realm of comedy. Now, they tell us, “During these last-minute, frenetic days of not practicing for the big gig Saturday at Vincenzo's Pizza in Chatsworth, we thought we'd take a breather and offer you some ways to get creative with all those Thanksgiving day leftovers.
+
“The Flaw is indebted to Chef Francois Alles-Zirconia of the prestigious nausées Académie de la cuisine in Paris who came up with this quick recipe for braised turkey almondine gumbo:
salt
1 lb fresh lard, trimmed and cut into 2-inch lengths
1 cup artificial sweetener
8 oz bacon, finely diced
2 cloves garlic, peeled and minced
2 tbsp chopped turkey skin
3 cups grenedine syrup
1 cup stuffing
water to taste
3 lbs lemon zest
4 vanilla beans (or substitute with a large can of pork and beans)
Artificial whipped topping -- just a dab'll do ya.
Combine ingredients in blender on high for three minutes. Pour into lightly floured plastic container and place in 375-degree oven for 12 hours.
+
“Don't skimp on the time -- it's the slow cooking that brings together the flavors of the turkey skin, grenadine and plastic.”
+
“While all that's in the oven, you may as well take-in the Flaw's performance at Vincenzo's Pizza in Chatsworth on Saturday night:” [See the Guide’s 7 pm listing. And if you actually cooked the foregoing, bring your stomach pump.]

Local Festivals:

.
Sat, Nov 28; Fri-Sun, Nov 27-29:
10 am-5 pm Annual “APPLE BUTTER FESTIVAL” with the RILEY'S MOUNTAINEER BAND is part of Los Rios Rancho “Celebratesa Fall Traditions” at Los Rios Rancho, 39611 Oak Glen Rd, Oak Glen; 909-797-1005; www.losriosrancho.com. Riley’s at Los Rios Rancho pays tribute to tradition with its 6th annual Apple Butter Festival Thanksgiving weekend. Pioneer families made a custom of gathering in late fall to cook up apple butter from the last of the season's crop. It was a practical way to preserve the apples throughout the year and a pleasurable way to promote community spirit. Families are invited to come up and share in this fine old tradition, which includes a hands-on demonstration of apple butter-making - the old-time (and slow!) way - outdoors in a big copper kettle. Guests can learn how to "start the snits" and "add the money," plus enjoy pioneer crafts and games, music, carriage rides, and lots more. Events include an old-fashioned hoedown Saturday night, featuring traditional dances and music by the Riley's Mountaineer Band. The Festival is 10 am to 5 pm each day. Festival admission is free (small fees for some activities). Tickets are required for Saturday night's hoedown, and include a supper of pumpkin stew.

LOS ANGELES AREA acoustic music performances:
.
.
Sat, Nov 28, on broadcast & web radio:
6-8 am “ALIVE & PICKING” hosted by MARY KATHERINE ALDIN on KPFK 90.7 FM in Los Angeles, worldwide at www.kpfk.com. As you may know, we do not usually list radio shows UNLESS they feature live acoustic performances. This show does not. But L.A. remains the least diverse radio market in the US (even though it’s the largest US radio market), so any show that spins folk-Americana CDs in this town is cause for celebration. And, KPFK has vacillated on whether or not Mary Katherine’s show will be aired regularly, or at all. Please take note, and let KPFK hear your preferences.

Free entertainment, tips only, in a great place, with nice people and good music. Vin Fiz Flyer tells us, “Old town Glendora is a kinda sleepy small Midwest town plopped into Southern California. These early morning concerts sound like a wacky idea, but they’re well-attended by musicians as well as music lovers! A car club meets at the Cafe next door every Saturday for breakfast, and they park their assorted ‘babies’ out front for you to peruse too. Come on by and start your weekend out right.” Check with venue to see if there is a concert scheduled for today.

7 pm ESPINO QUARTET at the venue named in FolkWorks as L.A.’s best intimate acoustic listening room venue - The Coffee Gallery Backstage, 2029 N Lake Av, Altadena; reservations 626-398-7917; info www.coffeegallery.com. Ever since the Gypsy Kings released their self-entitled album in 1989, they changed the global musical landscape with their pop-oriented version of traditional flamenco music called Rumba Catalana. A lively mix of gypsy rhythms, salsa and rumba that many musicians have tried to emulate but have failed to advance the genre to new horizons. The unlikely city of Los Angeles, has produced a guitarist-composer that has been able to take the Rumba guitar stylings and rhythms to new fresh territories that reflect the urban/global mix of Southern California. Nicaraguan born Roger Espinoza is a product of American music and a faithful student of the traditional music of the gypsies. A guitar virtuoso who has studied with the legendary Jorge Strunz of the ever so popular guitar duo Strunz and Farah. Mr. Espinoza studied the "Latin Rhumba" and "Gypsy Rhumba" as well as those rhythms from Latin America and the Middle East. He was perfecting and experimenting with the rhythm style of his idols the Gypsy Kings and making it his own. He studied Flamenco rhythms with good friend Paco Arroyo and Gino D'Auri. Mr. Espinoza also studied at the Berklee School of Music. With the release of his debut, Cafe Fuego, Roger Espinoza was poised to make his mark. Cut number one, "Day in Alhambra" which was inspired by one of the older cities in Spain (it is also the country where Espinoza purchased his favorite Conde Hermanos guitar in the town of Madrid); cut number four, “Monteverde” whose flavor comes from the Costa Rican city which is home to the rain forest (you can hear the rain forest at the beginning and conclusion of the piece); track number six, “Gypsy”, which was inspired by the wonderful guitar music performed by the homeless Gypsies of Sevilla and finally; cut number ten, “Goodbye (Pops)”, an homage dedicated to his father who was a pianist and his musical inspiration. The release of Café Fuego was an impressive debut that caught the critics attention. World C.D. Reviewer _Joe Hartlaub said, “Espinoza's playing is exquisite throughout”. CD Dish Reviewer _Michael Allison said, “Café Fuego is definitely one extraordinary album that captured my ear.” Tix, $15.

Proprietor Kevin tells us, “Now that you're Thanksgivinged out and have been Black Fridayed to death, why not kick back and groove to the sounds of not one, not two, not three but four -- count 'em -- acts. Anyway you carve it, that's a generous serving of music, and there's not a gobbler in the bunch. From the old school folk stylings of Jean Pickard & Don Truby and solid rock'n'roll chops of Dee Jaylee right up to the modern sounds of tunesmith Daniel Nesmith and the indie folk-rock of Kristi Michele, that's a great spread, with something for everyone. Wash it down with a couple of cups of Butler's coffee, and that's a fine meal for music-starved ears. The first course will be served around seven, so get there early and grab a seat. Bring your family, bring your friends. Or meet some new ones. Butler's is that kinda place.”

He adds, “Local musicians or singer-songwriters interested in performing both original music and well-chosen covers are urged to visit BUTLER'S web site and fill-in an application.” No cover.

Jameson Brown Coffee Roasters is owned and operated by two families, and the younger family members are getting more involved and looking to put in more live music on a regular basis. It’s two blocks south of the 210 freeway, so I’m going to check it out with a trial run, so to speak, by performing there. You’re welcome to stop by and jam with me if you like, or even come up and do a number during my set. I’ll introduce you to the peeps there. The place closes at 9 pm, so there’s time left for another late night gig or partying. Nice place, nice people”

Show info, www.wac.ucla.edu/cip or 310-206-1335. The group and the show are “an expression of gratitude for all our moments of music and dance of Brazil, India, & Hawaii. Their promo says, ”It is a rare rare thing. As soon as they met, artistic directors - Linda Yudin, Keali'i Ceballos & Viji Prakash began to talk as if they always knew each other. Ideas, songs, time measures & movement poured out them eager and urgent. As musician, Luiz Badaro played out a rhythm with his fingers on the table, Indian and Hawaiian choreographers Viji & Keali'i began almost immediately to establish a cadence... a movement phrase. It was a natural thing... Come, witness this shared spirit and intense energy as three of LA's most exciting dance companies share the stage to offer - the splendor of refined classical Indian dance; the deeply expressive movement and chant from Hawaii and the fiery tempo of Afro-Brazilian dance.” With support from the Department of Cultural Affairs, City of Los Angeles. Giving Thanks next travels to perform at the Guadalajara International Book Fair on Dec 3. Tix for tonight, $25 reserved seats; $20 JACCC mbrs; UCLA faculty / staff and students, children, & srs are $12.

Sun, Nov 29; Fri-Sun, Nov 27-29:

7 pm “JIM CURRY'S TRIBUTE TO THE MUSIC OF JOHN DENVER” returns to the venue named in FolkWorks as L.A.’s best intimate acoustic listening room venue - The Coffee Gallery Backstage, 2029 N Lake Av, Altadena; reservations 626-398-7917; info www.coffeegallery.com.
+
Husband and wife team Jim and Anne Curry deliver the multi-platinum hits of the late, great John Denver in a fun-filled evening of singing and stories. Jim plays the guitar and sings John's songs in a crystal clear tenor that will take your breath away. Anne, his wife and musical partner, plays guitar and mandolin and sings harmony in all the right places. Together, they will take you on a musical journey of the heart, where you will be invited to sing, clap your hands, stomp your feet and howl at the moon. Don't worry, you already know the words to the songs.
+
The music of the late John Denver is like an old friend, outlasting trends and standing the test of time. Join acclaimed performer Jim Curry for this tribute to the music of one of the most beloved singer/songwriters ever to grace the stage.
+
Tribute artist Jim Curry, who's voice was heard in the CBS-TV movie Take Me Home: The John Denver Story, has performed Denver's music in sold out shows throughout the country and has emerged as today's top performer of Denver's vast legacy of multi-platinum hits. Jim's uncanny ability to mirror John's voice and clean-cut look takes you back to the time when "Rocky Mountain High" "Sunshine" "Calypso" and "Annie's Song" topped the charts, and his popular music had the heartfelt message of caring for the earth and caring for each other. Denver's message is worth repeating: "Be kind to the Earth and to each other. " Bob Stane says, “Reserve your spot early and be sure to show up. Do not be a ‘no show.’” Tix, $18.

8 pm PO’ GIRL, plus TWILIGHT HOTEL opening, at the California Traditional Music Society - Center for Folk Music, 16953 Ventura Bl, Encino; www.ctmsfolkmusic.org; 818-817-7756. Co-presented by Paniolo Productions (www.panioloproductions.com).
+
Rolling Stone Magazine writes, "With enough sultry ambiance to be at home in either cocktail lounge or New Orleans street corner, Po' Girl's sentiment never feels forced, the lyricism never cliche or false. They manage to maintain that traditional and nostalgic sound while the breathing fresh life into an old-fashioned genre."
+
PO' GIRL tours in support of their pair of new albums, "Deer in the Night" and "Live." Alyssa Archambault of Paniolo writes, “Hailing originally from Canada, Po’Girl weave a blend of musical influences, sweetness, grit & soul into their fresh and original sound. Since the band's birth in Vancouver, BC in 2003 they've been winning devoted and growing numbers of fans across 4 continents and 13 countries with their powerful, passionate and spirited live show. The interplay between Allison Russell, Awna Teixeira, Benny Sidelinger and JJ Jones is truly something to behold. They are distinct voices with incredible harmonies; multiple instrumentalists who bring the perfect sound to each song and songwriters who pen poetic tunes you'll find yourself humming. Po’Girl showcases a wide array of instruments, from gutbucket bass, accordion, clarinet, banjo, dobro, and guitar, to electric bass, glockenspiel, piano, harmonica, bicycle bells, drums-- and they frequently trade off instruments with each song. Their fluid and joyous musicality is one of the group's most endearing features. Suffice it to say Po' Girl makes 21st Century roots music, urban roots – never derivative, not faithfully aping a beloved tradition. Russell, Teixeira, Sidelinger, and Jones don't rehash the old forms, they reshape and reinvigorate them for new ears. Like genuine gypsies, they wander and play--out on the international road bringing their unique brand of pan North Americana to a diverse and widespread audience 250 to 300 days of the year... always restless, more often than not bone-tired, they write their flashes of sadness, their loss, their good love, their faint dreams of home into songs that matter deeply to them. Like any good art, they are little acts of self-rescue. So you should listen. You aren't much different from them, and who couldn't use a little rescuing these days?”
+
The Glasgow Americana Festival says of them, “Their uplifting take on American Folk music, combining it with Jazz, roots and a little bit of pretty much everything else, has the ability to put a smile on anyone’s face.”
+
"Po' Girl is rough and smooth, sweet and tart, and would be huge stars in that super-cool alternate universe I've always wanted to live in." - John Schlotfelt, Little Village Magazine.
+
Paniolo adds, “Their latest release, ‘Deer in the Night,’ still includes many of the trappings of the trademark Po' Girl sound - the echoes of speakeasy jazz, the western lament, the accordion-strapped ghosts of European folk - but it's all delivered with a soulful clarity and depth only hinted at on previous records. They have also recently released a live album - 'Po' Girl Live' that captures the energy and spirit of the live show complete with special guests JT and the Clouds.”
+

+
Venue impresario and Folk Alliance FAR West Ambassador Award recipient Bob Stane says, “Absolutely fabulous musicianship and humor. They front Symphony Orchestras with their tribute to the old west and the new west. Even if you ‘think’ this is not your ‘coffee in an old bean can,’ you should loosen up and give it a try. You will return to see their cracklin' show over and over. Everyone loves The Riders Of The Purple Sage.”
+
They are one of, if not "the" most historical Western bands in the world. The Riders Of The Purple Sage starred in films and radio for the pre-war days to today... Today's Riders, under the leadership of Cody Bryant, put on a show rich with old and new music. Band members are highly-skilled musicians-instruments include a five-string banjo, hot lead guitar, fiddle, steel guitar, bass, and drums and consummate vocalists. While keeping alive the tradition of the original Riders' sound, they continue to write and perform new material that carries on and builds upon their signature style. Adding a strong swing influence (ala Bob Wills and his Texas Playboys), their performances appeal to listeners and dancers of all ages. Today’s Riders bring together hot swing riffs with smooth harmonies that, at the end of the show, leave the audience wanting more. Their sound and show makes you feel that all is well in the West. They’ve performed live on radio’s “Tied to the Tracks,” and are named in FolkWorks “Top Ten / Best of 2008” as THE best acoustic band in Southern California. In one review (some time ago) Larry Wines wrote that the performance was “ethereal and orchestral. They exceeded musicianship. They exceeded their genre.”

Bob Stane adds, “You owe it to yourself to see this most amazing and amusing exhibit. Forget what you think you like and don’t like. See The Riders Of The Purple Sage.” Tix: $20.

8 pm BRUCE MOLSKY plays the FolkWorks Concert Series at First Presbyterian Church, 1220 2nd St, Santa Monica 90401; info, www.folkworks.org. It’s a rare opportunity to see BRUCE MOLSKY in a solo concert. Alone or with fellow musicians, guitar, fiddle, or banjo in hand, multi-instrumentalist Bruce Molsky has been exploring traditional music from an astonishingly broad range of cultures over the past two decades. He synthesizes these musical forms and refracts them through his own evolving sensibilities to the point where the sources of his inspiration transform themselves into a sound that is uniquely his. While he is most identified with traditional American old-time music, Molsky’s influences range from the Appalachian soul of Tommy Jarrell to Delta blues, from the haunting modal strains of Irish music to the rhythmically nimble music of Eastern Europe.

7 pm TOM RUSSELL plays the Ojai Concert Series, Ojai Valley Woman's Club, 441 E. Ojai Av, Ojai; 805-665-9952; www.ojaiconcertseries.com. Tom Russell is an American singer-songwriter. Although most identified with the Texas Country music tradition, his music also incorporates elements of folk, Tex-Mex and the cowboy music of the American West. His songs have been recorded by artists such as Johnny Cash, Nanci Griffith, Dave Alvin, Suzy Bogguss and more. In addition to his music, he is also a painter of folk art and has published a novel and a book of songwriting quotes. Russell grew up in California, graduated from the University of California with a degree in criminology and taught school in Nigeria at the time of the Biafran War. He also lived in Spain and Norway and played music at a circus in Puerto Rico. He began his musical career in earnest in the early 1970s in Vancouver, playing strip bars. Later he relocated to Texas and formed a band with singer-pianist Patricia Hardin. Along with legions of fans, the media treats him with high regard: "perhaps the finest American folk-roots artist that most Americans never heard of." -All Music Guide. This may well sell-out. UCLA ticket office: 310-825-2101 or www.uclalive.org. The promo calls him, “America’s premiere musical fabulist,” and Randy Newman has maintained a remarkable balance of trenchant vignettes, exaggerated outrage and, especially in his film work, earnest sentiment. His latest album, “Harps and Angels,” employs sardonic wit and self-deprecation on a level worthy of Mark Twain. And Newman’s wry classics, including “Political Science,” “I Love L.A.,” and his much-played during the aftermath of Katrina, “Louisiana 1927,” have only grown in relevance with time. But Newman shines most brightly in his rare concert appearances, where his mischievous presence complements his musical and storytelling talents. Tix, $65, $50, $40; UCLA students $15.

Led by Woody’s son Arlo, a star in his own right, “The Guthrie Family Rides Again” continues the clan’s tradition of sharing its music far and wide. Joining-in are Arlo’s son Abe, who has accompanied his father on keyboards and vocals since the 1980s, daughters Cathy and Annie, and Sarah Lee Guthrie with her husband Johnny Irion - one of the most acclaimed folk-rock duos of the last decade - and various grandkids.
