.
NEWS:
.
.
Our SPECIAL EDITION: GUIDE TO THE FAR WEST CONFERENCE is available at http://acousticamericana.blogspot.com/2009/11/special-edition-guide-to-far-west.html
It was just too extensive to include it here. All our usual features and some news-items-that-can’t-wait are in this edition.
.
===
.
The Guide’s TICKET ALERTS for upcoming events has been extensively updated, and it follows the regular listings…
.
===
.
Yes, that was Coffee Gallery Backstage impresario BOB STANE that you saw on the TV news Nov 4. He was everywhere - on Channel 2, and channel 5, and channel 7, and he was featured in a full-page story the same day in the Pasadena Star News newspaper! Talk about star treatment (and long overdue, in Bob’s case). Bob is the creative force, booker, sound and light man of the venue named in FolkWorks as the Best Intimate Acoustic Music Venue in L.A. And he will receive the “Best of the West Award” on Saturday at the Folk Alliance Region West (FAR West) Conference in Irvine. (See our extensive special section on the FAR West Conference for all the details.)
.
===
.
The editor sends his heartfelt thanks to all who attended, volunteered as staff, or performed at the BENEFIT CONCERT on Sunday, Oct 25. It was an amazing day! More about the show, and video links, will be here soon.

In Memoriam…
“BANJO” FRED STARNER, the Grand Duke of Hobo Minstrels, a performing guest during multiple appearances on radio’s “Tied to the Tracks,” banjo player with Pete Seeger, and all around good guy, passed away about 10:30 pm on October 25. Fred was part of Pete Seeger’s shipbuilding and first sailing crew on the Hudson River sloop “Clearwater,” one of the first citizen grassroots projects that brought environmental awareness to the public consciousness. By confronting then leading the fight to overcome the horrific pollution of the Hudson River, the living example of the “Clearwater” continues to show us all a better way.
+
Always a voice of conscience, Fred’s original songs expressed outrage over stupid wars and waste, enrichment of the few at the cost of the many, and mocked politicians who deserved it, while calling attention to social injustices and questioning the doctrine of worshipping wealth. His originals often celebrated colorful, sometimes hard-won legacies of a history that is forever on the brink of oblivion. Fred especially loved the lore of the rails and the hobos, and they loved him. Fred was the reigning “Grand Duke of Hobo Minstrels,” elevated to that title after first being voted, a few years ago, as official “Hobo Troubadour” by his beloved “hobo community” at their annual gathering / respite from riding the high iron, in Britt, Iowa. After that recognition, Fred was featured in a documentary film on the American hobo, from economic refugee to icon of folklore.
+
Many others loved him, as well. When your editor booked a music festival for charity a few years ago, Fred stepped up to the plate on a few hours notice, playing what became a highlight set in place of Denise Vasquez, another artist couldn’t perform after she sustained serious injuries in an automobile crash the night before. Characteristically, though Fred had never met Denise, his was one of the first cards she received with get-well wishes.
+
And Fred knew how to have fun with music. One day in 2008, he sent your editor a parody of “Blowin’ in the Wind” that chronicled the social ostracism of one who had enjoyed too much bean dip.
+
In recent months, Fred’s health became compromised and he was in a medical rehab facility following his most recent hospitalization. He died far from the long steel rails and the short crossties.
+
Fred is survived by his daughter Tasha and wife Barbara. His longtime friend, folksinger Ross Altman, is assisting the family with final arrangements and an upcoming memorial service.
+
Your editor still has a bottle of rare vintage that was a holiday gift from Fred, and it awaits a gathering of his friends to be consumed in a toast to him. We’ll play Fred’s original banjo / vocal, “Hobo Soup,” a song that earned 2006 “Listener Favorite” honors on radio’s “Tied to the Tracks,” and we’ll play his original, “Escape,” and his delightful banjo medley of Bach’s “Ode to Joy” and “Old Dan Tucker,” and we’ll all imagine we hear the lonesome whistle of the train leaving town, with Fred safe aboard a nice warm boxcar.
+
Here are the lyrics to Fred’s song, “Escape,” from his live concert CD, “Hobos and the Wind” ~
+
Watch for my comrades by the side of the track
I know there’s some who’ll never be back.
Beware of the cities with their police wail
A sad sign of community failed.
There’s fear on a stock market fall
Not one live song at the suburban mall.
Watch for my comrades by the side of the track
I know there’s some who’ll never be back.
I hope the fog, the mist, will lift
All once again will see life as a gift.
But until my mind and vision clears
I must free the cruel city spheres.
Watch for my comrades by the side of the track
I know there’s some who’ll never be back.
Watch for my comrades by the side of the track
I know there’s some who’ll never be back.
Big Bill Gates earns tens of billions
Disney’s Eisner’s worth five hundred million.
But the hobos live life at the core
Happiness is not making more and more.
Hobos share their Mulligan stew
And a certain joy that sees ‘em through.
Well I’m no great philosopher and muse
But I know a freight train can cure the blues.
Watch for my comrades by the side of the track
I know there’s some who’ll never be back.
So I’ll search out my comrades
Whitey and his guitar,
Captain Dingel who can sing to the stars
I’ll help Pilot Blackie lighten his pack
I know we’ll find peace on life’s track.
Watch for my comrades by the side of the track
I know there’s some who’ll never be back.
Watch for my comrades by the side of the track
I know there’s some who’ll never be back.
+
We’ll watch for you, Fred, every time we hear the lonesome whistle blow, and we’ll imagine your banjo recreating the rhythm of the rails as you jam with Jimmie Rogers and Steve Goodman and Johnny Cash in the shade of the water tank, your Mulligan stew warming over a wood fire. In the meantime, we’ll miss you, old friend.

7 pm IAN ANDERSON “PLAYS THE ACOUSTIC JETHRO TULL” at The Wiltern Theatre, 3790 Wilshire Bl, L.A. 90010; 213-380-5005 or 213-388-1400. Ian Anderson, known throughout the world of rock music as the flute and voice behind the legendary Jethro Tull, performs a special solo with three guests. Ian performs songs from the Jethro Tull repertoire and his solo material. Widely recognized as the man who introduced the flute to rock music, he remains “the crowned exponent of flute-playing” in the pop-rock genres of music. In addition to classical flute, he plays ethnic flutes and whistles together with acoustic guitar and the mandolin family of instruments, providing the acoustic textures that are an integral part of most of the Jethro Tull songbook.
+
When not touring with Jethro Tull, Ian Anderson appears frequently in solo concerts with orchestras and in eclectic acoustic shows. For this 2009 solo tour, Anderson has three scheduled guests (subject to change) including IAN CLARKE, a stalwart of the classical and crossover scene, TEYMOUR HOUSEGO, an Indian bansuri (flute) player, and classical flautist ABIGAIL BURROWS. Each guest plays a solo spot and performs with Anderson. More at www.j-tull.com
+
As a solo artist, Ian Anderson has recorded the diverse solo albums “Walk into Light” (1983), the flute instrumental “Divinities” (1995) that reached Number One on the Billboard Classical chart, and the more recently recorded acoustic collections of songs, “The Secret Language of Birds” (2000), and “Rupi’s Dance” (2003). In 2006, he was awarded a Doctorate in Literature from Heriot Watt University in Edinburgh, and received the “Ivor Award for International Achievement in Music,” was listed in the “New Years Honours List 2008,” and he received an MBE from his native Britain for services to music. In 2008, he celebrated 40 years as a recording and performing musician. It’s a chance to catch a legendary artist. Tix, www.livenation.com/venue/the-wiltern-tickets

LOS ANGELES AREA acoustic music performances:

.
Sat, Nov 7, Saturdays, on broadcast & web radio:
6-8 am “ALIVE & PICKING” hosted by MARY KATHERINE ALDIN on KPFK 90.7 FM in Los Angeles, worldwide at www.kpfk.com. As you may know, we do not usually list radio shows UNLESS they feature live acoustic performances. This show does not. But L.A. remains the least diverse radio market in the US (even though it’s the largest US radio market), so any show that spins folk-Americana CDs in this town is cause for celebration. And, KPFK has vacillated on whether or not Mary Katherine’s show will be aired regularly, or at all. Please take note, and let KPFK hear your preferences.

Free entertainment, tips only, in a great place, with nice people and good music. Vin Fiz Flyer tells us, “Old town Glendora is a kinda sleepy small Midwest town plopped into Southern California. These early morning concerts sound like a wacky idea, but they’re well-attended by musicians as well as music lovers! A car club meets at the Cafe next door every Saturday for breakfast, and they park their assorted ‘babies’ out front for you to peruse too. Come on by and start your weekend out right.” Check with venue to see if there is a concert scheduled for today.

3-5 pm (Pacific) “A PRAIRIE HOME COMPANION” always features live performances and skits and stories with host GARRISON KEILLOR, a regular cast of recording artists, and guests, whether broadcasting from various live venues across America, or from its home base in Minnesota. This initial “live” broadcast tiume each weekend is standard everywhere, though repeat times vary by station. In L.A., the show is broadcast on KPCC 89.3 FM, and repeats Saturday night, 6-8 pm and Sunday Noon-2 pm. But if you’re in L.A., it’s much better to find a web simulcast from somewhere; that’s because KPCC has no other music shows and they do not know how to control the levels for music performances, causing frequent peaking and signal cut-out.

Sun, Nov 8:
3-6 pm DALE LA DUKE & JOHN FLYNN play a house confert in Sylmar; reservations get directions at 323 356-6197. Feel free to bring a snack to share.
+
DALE LA DUKE is an award winning singer-songwriter who has performed live on radio’s “Tied to the Tracks.” Originally from the Detroit area, he has for many years made his living writing, teaching and playing music in Los Angeles. His song "The Lone Ranger" was a TttT “Listener Favorite” and later nominated for an L.A. Music Award. The song has acheived cult status and will be on his next CD.
+
JOHN FLYNN sings from the heart. His powerful songs of humanity and hope are deeply rooted in the traditions of Woody Guthrie and Phil Ochs. From barbed political verse to fun-loving lyrics, John paints vivid, lasting images with words and music, drawn from a palette of awareness, irony, humor, and compassion. A socially driven singer-songwriter not afraid of writing about the shadows, John always seems to find the glimmer of light in the dark. He does not bludgeon but allows us the space to come to our own conclusions. His songs speak to our common shared humanity. Thank-you notes left on his websites come from both soldiers and anti-war advocates. With just his old Martin D-28 and harmonica for accompaniment, John is truly an American Troubadour. John walks his talk. When off the road, he leads a prison discussion group for the New Beginnings program. He is also very involved with Camp Dreamcatcher, a safe haven for children living with and affected by HIV/AIDS. Additionally he is an advocate for the care and treatment of combat veterens suffering from PTSD. More at www.tscbooking.com/id1.html. Suggested donation for the show is $10.

Venue impresario Bob Stane says they “provide the perfect blend of harmony and humor harkening back to the days of Vaudeville. Preserving America’s great vocal sounds from a time when music was music, this vocal quartet, named the 2002 National A Cappella Champions, recreates the close harmonies of such legendary groups as The Ink Spots and the Pied Pipers, while including the era’s great comic songs made famous by the likes of Louis Jordan and The Hoosier Hotshots. A typical performance by The Perfect Gentlemen includes marvelous melodious music mingled with masterful mirth, mischief, and merry-making. The group’s versatility allows for effortless shifts between vocal styles with an air of ease, whether singing a cappella or accompanied by guitar or ukulele. Their signature piece, Salute to the 20th Century, is a humorous take on the de-evolution of music over the last century, illustrated by singing the same song in the style of Barbershop, Dixieland, Blues, Big Band, Doo-Wop, Bluegrass, Disco, Techno Punk, and Rap, complete with visuals that delights audiences of all ages time and time again. Once you’ve heard The Perfect Gentlemen, you won’t settle for anything.” Tix. $20.

8 pm BRUCE MOLSKY plays the FolkWorks Concert Series at First Presbyterian Church, 1220 2nd St, Santa Monica 90401; info, www.folkworks.org. It’s a rare opportunity to see BRUCE MOLSKY in a solo concert. Alone or with fellow musicians, guitar, fiddle, or banjo in hand, multi-instrumentalist Bruce Molsky has been exploring traditional music from an astonishingly broad range of cultures over the past two decades. He synthesizes these musical forms and refracts them through his own evolving sensibilities to the point where the sources of his inspiration transform themselves into a sound that is uniquely his. While he is most identified with traditional American old-time music, Molsky’s influences range from the Appalachian soul of Tommy Jarrell to Delta blues, from the haunting modal strains of Irish music to the rhythmically nimble music of Eastern Europe.

7 pm TOM RUSSELL plays the Ojai Concert Series, Ojai Valley Woman's Club, 441 E. Ojai Av, Ojai; 805-665-9952; www.ojaiconcertseries.com. Tom Russell is an American singer-songwriter. Although most identified with the Texas Country music tradition, his music also incorporates elements of folk, Tex-Mex and the cowboy music of the American West. His songs have been recorded by artists such as Johnny Cash, Nanci Griffith, Dave Alvin, Suzy Bogguss and more. In addition to his music, he is also a painter of folk art and has published a novel and a book of songwriting quotes. Russell grew up in California, graduated from the University of California with a degree in criminology and taught school in Nigeria at the time of the Biafran War. He also lived in Spain and Norway and played music at a circus in Puerto Rico. He began his musical career in earnest in the early 1970s in Vancouver, playing strip bars. Later he relocated to Texas and formed a band with singer-pianist Patricia Hardin. Along with legions of fans, the media treats him with high regard: "perhaps the finest American folk-roots artist that most Americans never heard of." -All Music Guide. This may well sell-out.
