ACOUSTIC AMERICANA
MUSIC GUIDE
.
NOVEMBER 19 & 20, 2009 UPDATED with MORE EVENT LISTINGS
.
+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+
.
Yep, even MID-WEEK, there are concerts, club gigs, coffeehouse shows, acoustic open mics, (more than you can go see, even if have a hovercraft or a helicopter or one of those rocket backpacks), plus workshops for artists.
+
And if you’re so broke you’re stuck at home, check out our listings for RADIO SHOWS with performance-interviews with acoustic musicians (mostly on web simulcasts, of course). It’s all here for you, at http://acousticamericana.blogspot.com
.
More info on the Guide (what it’s about, etc), follows the event descriptions / listings and our “heads-up” advance tix notices.
.
.
First, 3 NEWS QUICKIES:
.
1) BE PART OF PASADENA’S LARGEST FOOD DRIVE this weekend at the “Fork in the Road,” where Pasadena Av divides from St. John and creates a triangle N of Bellfontaine (all just N of California Av, near Huntington Hospital).
+
On Sat & Sun, Nov 21 & 22, you can do a drive-by drop-off of food for Union Station Homeless Services, from 8 am to 4 pm, and “Put the Fork in Hunger,” as the event’s name says.
+
So, why did you read this in the Music Guide? Well, because the “Fork in the Road” – an 18 foot high fork sculpture, was recently dedicated as a guerilla art placement in honor of the 75th birthday of Coffee Gallery Backstage impresario Bob Stane. In addition to being honored with the fork, Bob just received the Folk Alliance FAR West Ambassador Award for all he does to support folk-Americana and acoustic artists. As he is wont to do, Bob is giving back to the community, once more, with Ken Marshall, the fork’s creator. And this time, everyone can help! More info? Call Philip Coombes at 626-644-3227 or email phil@agentphil.com

2) YOUR VOTE selects winners in the 2009 “INDEPENDENT SINGER SONGWRITERS ASSOCIATION (ISSA) SONG CONTEST.” See the list of nominees and hear song samples at http://issa-music.org/song_contest2009_nominees.htm. Winners in this year's contest are determined by online fan vote, which runs Wed, Nov 18 through Tue, Nov 25.
+
Nominees include DALE LaDUKE, a past “Tied to the Tracks” guest whose original song, “The Lone Ranger,” became a “Listener Favorite” on the radio show. That’s the song that’s now vying in the ISSA Folk Category.
+
In the Adult Contemporary Category is a song by SUSAN PICKING, whose music has been heard on “TttT.”
+
You can vote for your favorite nominees at www.issa-music.org/voter_reg_songcontest.php
+
In parallel, the judging panel will review all nominee submissions to select the winner of the $2,000 grand prize and title of “ISSA Singer-Songwriter of the Year.” Winners from the Fan Vote and the Judging Panel will be announced Mon, Nov 30.
.

.
3) ATTEND A LIVE TV TAPING, on Fri, Nov 20, at 3 or 4 pm, of “THE LATE LATE SHOW” with Craig Ferguson. Rather suddenly, on Wed, Nov 18, the show announced two rare Friday tapings. Free tickets are available to be in the audience at CBS Studios in Hollywood, with arrival times of 3 or 4 pm. Producers tell us, “If you've ever had trouble making one of our Monday-Thursday tapings, or if you just want to start your weekend right, use the link below to print free tickets!” The link is www.ocatv.com/latelate.
+
We don’t know who the guests are, but we do know that guests from radio’s “Tied to the Tracks” have later performed on this nationwide network TV show.

Thu, Nov 19, on web radio:
5-7 pm “DOUBLE D RADIO SHOW” available at www.kcty.org tonight presents the FULL VERSION of Arlo Guthrie’s “ALICE'S RESTAURANT” in the show’s “6 O'clock Spotlight.” It’s not a song about the restaurant, it’s a song about war and peace and nonviolent civil disobedience and havin’ to pick up the garbage. Host Darren Gaber says, “Join me [as we] feature the classic Arlo Guthrie song… in its 18 minute entirety. Don't miss out on a great classic and a lot more. Tune in. Turn on. Rock out. Peace.” More at www.myspace.com/doubledradioshow and you can contact Darren (Double D) at doubledradioshow@gmail.com. Now, why is this a big deal, you ask? Well, because “Alice’s Restaurant” has been a must-play on the radio on Thanksgiving for 40 years, and the Double D Radio Show is taking next Thursday off to celebrate Thanksgiving. (Double D Radio is ostensibly a rock show…)

Thu, Nov 19 (JUST ADDED to the Guide):
7:30 pm MICHELE VREELAND’s “ART, SONGS, & HOLIDAY BASH” at Hilden Hahn Creatives, 416 W Pico Bl (between Hope & Grand; (look for a little blue light out front), in the Miracle Mile district, L.A. 90015; 213-747-1312; www.hildenhahn.com. If you’re looking for a party and music, this is quite an event with lots of amenities.
+
Michele tells us, “I’m so excited about this one you guys! I’ve been working my little tail off to offer you the best possible party I could think of. You know how we just had a meet up at ‘A Secret Warehouse Party’ at Out of Asia? Well, I wanted to do something like that, but just for us, using my West Coast take on how a Gallery Party should be. I even got this event sponsored for us. Yeah, that’s right, sponsored. So you know what that means? That means you don’t have to pay a dime. Not a penny to attend this event and enjoy all the goodies that are in store for you. All you have to do is show up and enjoy the festivities and get to know your fellow ‘Downtowneys.’ We will eat, drink, and be entertained for FREE, all because of the good blessings and efforts of our sponsors.
+
“Can I get a ‘Hell Yeah Michele and Craig?!’...heehee. This Sponsor is my personal favorite place to eat, ‘Café Flourish.’ They will be feeding us the most amazing organic plant-based food. In the short time they have been open (since June 2009), they have had the likes of Jason Mraz, Alicia Silverstone, the guy from the band Keane, a woman who is the author of a NY Times Bestseller book called ‘How to be a Skinny Bitch’ (I think that’s the name of her book), and me (ha) frequent the café on a weekly basis. They are located in the Miracle Mile district of L.A. and have the yummiest healthiest food you can find in L.A.” The Café is the sponsor, but it’s NOT where the event is being held; info on Café Flourish, 5406 Wilshire Bl, Miracle Mile, L.A. 90036; 323-939-3932; www.cafeflourish.com.)
+
Michele continues, “Miracle Mile is not that far from downtown L.A. It’s on Wilshire Blvd, just west of La Brea, across the street from Staples Office Supply. They (Café Flourish) will be feeding us the whole night through. Please do take a look at their website and look them up on Yelp to see what amazing things people are saying about them already. From what I hear they are on their way to being the new ‘Real Food Daily.’ I’m working with them on our menu for our event. So we will have a little something special that is just for us. They will also be giving us a 15% off coupon for your next visit to the café, and FYI, they don’t do coupons. I convinced him (owner James) to do this for us. Oops, did I give that away? Yes, we will have goodies at our event, 50 to be precise. The first 50 through the door will get them. We are having ALL of the wine sponsored by an anonymous contributor. Nice! Thank you!
+
“About the gallery that is kindly hosting our party: The Gallery at Hilden Hahn exhibits world-class art by such notables as Hiroki Morinoue, Setsuko Watanabe, Miho Morinoue, Tim Davis, Timothy P. Ojile and Gabriella Zalapi. All of these artists will have their art displayed in the gallery the night of our party. Please take note of their great work and respectfully do not lean against or touch any of the pieces you see in the room (Thanks Loves). Co-director Craig Hahn said, ‘With people around the world slowing their pace of consumption, the world of art is reestablishing itself as an essential commodity. Art allows us to appreciate life more fully. It brings us together to engage in conversation and also to reflect on that which enlivens us. Los Angeles,’ Hahn added, ‘is the perfect city for artists to fully realize their talents for renewal and exploration.’ The recession has produced an unexpected bright spot in L.A. Artists are flocking to the West Coast as the new showcase for contemporary art and design. Despite the current financial crises some creative professionals have sidestepped local economies to build a new, thriving base for business and art. The latest arrival to this vibrant scene is Hilden Hahn Creatives.
+
“The next activity on our list at the glorious event is my performance. You will get to see me in all my musical glory. At 7:30 pm I will be performing a 30-minute acoustic set of original songs alongside my guitar player Tim Weber. We’ve been called the ‘Dave Matthews and Tim Reynolds of the female acoustic music scene,’ by ‘Wired Out Magazine.’ I’ve been playing with Tim for about 2 years now and we really do have a chemistry that makes it possible for me to lose myself in. All of you performers out there know what that means. For those of you that have never heard my music you may listen at my links below. I really am excited to share this night with you and please do make an effort to come out and meet me and your fellow group members.”
+

+
Schedule for tonight’s activities: 5:30-7 pm - food, drinks, mingling, and goodie bags for the first 50 through the door; please sign your name on the mailing list and fill out your nametag. 7-7:20 pm - During this time, Michele invites those who wish to participate to say your name and occupation for those in the room; she adds, “This will give us a chance to meet each other a little more.” 7:30-8 pm – an acoustic musical performance by Michele Vreeland and Tim Weber. Michele adds, “Please do try to be as quiet as you can during this time. Or at least quieter than me… ha ha.” 8-9 pm - more mingling, deserts, drinks, and a live DJ.
+
Doors at 5:30 pm, performance at 7:30 pm. Michele says, regarding parking, “There is a Lakers game at the Staples Center, so be on the lookout for parking with the best rates, free meters after 6 pm, and such. There are plenty of parking lots around the place.” The entire evening is free.

It’s a new venue, said to be beautiful, serving food, beer & wine, 25 mins E of Pasadena off the 210 Fwy. The venue is part of the newly-renovated Claremont Packing House. Proprietress Nancy Tessier’s father, Refugio "Coco" Lopez, plays alto, and she wanted her club to feature an array of jazz singers. This led to a fortuitous connection with Dale Boatman, founder and president of the California Jazz Arts Society. CalJAS is a powerful force in bringing some of the best jazz artists in Southern California, especially singers, to restaurants, clubs and other performance spaces in eastern Los Angeles County and the Inland Empire, an area that previously had relatively few opportunities for jazz musicians to perform.

Fri, Nov 20:
8 pm BARRY BIG B BRENNER brings “Traditional and contemporary country blues & ragtime music, performed solo on acoustic 6 string, 12 string and National resonator guitars with accompanying vocals“ to the venue named in FolkWorks as L.A.’s best intimate acoustic listening room venue - The Coffee Gallery Backstage, 2029 N Lake Av, Altadena; reservations 626-398-7917; info www.coffeegallery.com. It’s been said that “His music oozes out of the weird American night. Fine, mellow and yet exciting and invigorating, like the most distinct of distilled spirits..."
+
Fellow musicians refer to him as; "Mr. Blues, Rags & Stomps!", that's because Barry Big B Brenner plays the Real Country Folk Blues which originated in the Mississippi Delta, Texas Plains, Piney Woods, Piedmont Seaboard, Louisiana Bayou and of course...Chicago's South Side. Barry has performed all over the USA; from Alaska to the back woods of the Arkansas Ozarks, out to the California Foothills and many points in-between. He was Born and raised on the legendary South Side of Chicago and is a self-taught singer and acoustic guitar virtuoso. Big B has performed alongside such notables as renowned Blues Guitar Maestro Albert King and Eric Burdon of Animals fame.
+
Barry now continues the grand American tradition of solo country bluesman and folk music songster. He is a lifelong proponent of fingerstyle guitar picking, mastering the genres of country blues, ragtime and delta bottleneck slide. Big B always features four different and unique-sounding acoustic guitars in his live performance sets. You'll hear 6-string, 12-string & National resonator guitars, "the way they were always meant to be played." A deep roots blues singer, Barry's penetrating vocals evoke the true feeling and meaning behind the expression "Down Home Blues" and revitalizes pre-electric blues as a truly original American musical gift to the world. HIs latest CD, "Old School Blues" (www.cdbaby.com/cd/bbbbrenner2), represents what you would likely hear today at his live show. The a;bum includes several songs played on low strung acoustic 12-string guitar - "You Don't Know My Mind", "Bye Bye Baby Blues" and the rousing "Step It Up and Go!" - as well as some strutting National resonator bottleneck slide guitar numbers. More at www.myspace.com/barrybigbbrenner. Tix, $15.

Sat, Dec 5:
8 pm BRUCE MOLSKY plays the FolkWorks Concert Series at First Presbyterian Church, 1220 2nd St, Santa Monica 90401; info, www.folkworks.org. It’s a rare opportunity to see BRUCE MOLSKY in a solo concert. Alone or with fellow musicians, guitar, fiddle, or banjo in hand, multi-instrumentalist Bruce Molsky has been exploring traditional music from an astonishingly broad range of cultures over the past two decades. He synthesizes these musical forms and refracts them through his own evolving sensibilities to the point where the sources of his inspiration transform themselves into a sound that is uniquely his. While he is most identified with traditional American old-time music, Molsky’s influences range from the Appalachian soul of Tommy Jarrell to Delta blues, from the haunting modal strains of Irish music to the rhythmically nimble music of Eastern Europe.

7 pm TOM RUSSELL plays the Ojai Concert Series, Ojai Valley Woman's Club, 441 E. Ojai Av, Ojai; 805-665-9952; www.ojaiconcertseries.com. Tom Russell is an American singer-songwriter. Although most identified with the Texas Country music tradition, his music also incorporates elements of folk, Tex-Mex and the cowboy music of the American West. His songs have been recorded by artists such as Johnny Cash, Nanci Griffith, Dave Alvin, Suzy Bogguss and more. In addition to his music, he is also a painter of folk art and has published a novel and a book of songwriting quotes. Russell grew up in California, graduated from the University of California with a degree in criminology and taught school in Nigeria at the time of the Biafran War. He also lived in Spain and Norway and played music at a circus in Puerto Rico. He began his musical career in earnest in the early 1970s in Vancouver, playing strip bars. Later he relocated to Texas and formed a band with singer-pianist Patricia Hardin. Along with legions of fans, the media treats him with high regard: "perhaps the finest American folk-roots artist that most Americans never heard of." -All Music Guide. This may well sell-out. 8 pm AN EVENING WITH RANDY NEWMAN at UCLA Live in Royce Hall, 340 Royce Dr, on the UCLA campus at Royce Dr between Westwood Bl and Hilgard Av, West L.A. UCLA ticket office: 310-825-2101 or www.uclalive.org. The promo calls him, “America’s premiere musical fabulist,” and Randy Newman has maintained a remarkable balance of trenchant vignettes, exaggerated outrage and, especially in his film work, earnest sentiment. His latest album, “Harps and Angels,” employs sardonic wit and self-deprecation on a level worthy of Mark Twain. And Newman’s wry classics, including “Political Science,” “I Love L.A.,” and his much-played during the aftermath of Katrina, “Louisiana 1927,” have only grown in relevance with time. But Newman shines most brightly in his rare concert appearances, where his mischievous presence complements his musical and storytelling talents. Tix, $65, $50, $40; UCLA students $15.

UCLA ticket office: 310-825-2101 or www.uclalive.org. Four generations of what Vanity Fair rightly called “the first family of American folk” gather to revive the musical spirit of late patriarch Woody Guthrie. Led by Woody’s son Arlo, a star in his own right, “The Guthrie Family Rides Again” continues the clan’s tradition of sharing its music far and wide. Joining-in are Arlo’s son Abe, who has accompanied his father on keyboards and vocals since the 1980s, daughters Cathy and Annie, and Sarah Lee Guthrie with her husband Johnny Irion - one of the most acclaimed folk-rock duos of the last decade - and various grandkids. The elder generation is represented by Woody’s songs, both the classics and “new” compositions using lyrics uncovered in the Guthrie archives. Tix, $58, $42, $28; UCLA students $15.
