OCTOBER 28 through NOVEMBER 4, 2009 EDITION
.
+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+
.
ROCKTOBER brought dozens and dozens of live acoustic performances and they continue all the way through the end of the month and into NOVEMBER at concert halls, coffeehouses, clubs, bars, and theaters and amphitheaters indoors and out! Alas the shows in parks, band shells, and fall festivals are fading into happy memories as the time change and harbinger of winter’s chill make staying indoors more comfortable. For all the ins and outs, your guide to the world of acoustica awaits you at
.
http://acousticamericana.blogspot.com
.
(go ahead and give your friends the url. It may diminish your popularity as the one who always knows about all the music in town. But you won’t use up all your cell phone minutes reading the Guide to the enraptured and unknowing.)

7:30 pm REGINA SPEKTOR at the Greek Theatre, 2700 N Vermont Av, in Griffith Park, L.A.; Greek Theatre hotline, 323-665-1927; http://greektheatrela.com. Pianist and vocalist Regina Spektor returns to Los Angeles, and the seating at the Greek Theatre will be reconfigured to allow for a more intimate setting. Captivating audiences with her distinctive songs, Regina Spektor has gone from hypnotizing small crowds to selling out 3,000 capacity venues worldwide with what Rolling Stone praised as "one of the most intensely joyful rock shows we've seen." Spektor crafts intelligent, honest odes to life, and her amazing ability to turn the ordinary into the extraordinary is evident in her new CD, “far,” (another one of those lower-case things) which debuted at #3 on The Billboard Top 200. Along with NPR, USA Today, Vanity Fair, The Los Angeles Times, Entertainment Weekly, and many others around the world, The New York Times raves about her newest album, “[Spektor’s] most ambitious work sonically and her storytelling is as elliptical as ever.” The UK Sunday Times agrees this is “her most accomplished, mystifying, eclectic and beautiful release to date. It doesn't just fly, it soars." Spin Magazine says "far snuggles between her previous efforts, linking the heady sweep of 2003's Soviet Kitsch to the roundabout pop treats of Begin To Hope.” People Magazine adds, “[Spektor’s] eclectic, breathtakingly gorgeous songs will be good company wherever you go.” Tix, $45 / $39.50 / $35.

Jim's uncanny ability to mirror John's voice and clean-cut look takes you back to the time when "Rocky Mountain High," "Sunshine," "Calypso," and "Annie's Song" topped the charts, and popular music had the heartfelt message of caring for the earth and caring for each other. Denver's message is worth repeating: "Be kind to the Earth and to each other."

This led to a fortuitous connection with Dale Boatman, founder and president of the California Jazz Arts Society. CalJAS is a powerful force in bringing some of the best jazz artists in Southern California, especially singers, to restaurants, clubs and other performance spaces in eastern Los Angeles County and the Inland Empire, an area that previously had relatively few opportunities for jazz musicians to perform.

6 pm 2nd annual “FRIDAY NIGHTS LIVE IN CLAREMONT” brings PIRATES OF THE BLACK SWAN performing at Claremont City Hall, 2nd St, Claremont 91711. They routinely sell-out the house when they play the Coffee Gallery Backstage, and that venue’s impresario, Bob Stane, says, “Batten down the hatches. Secure the main lines, for this ship be a rockin' tonight!” Captain Ron Ely performs his maritime music (including an original that had its world premiere on radio’s “Tied to the Tracks”) with his trusted guitar and mouth harp, singing songs from many ports of call. Then, me hearties, as Bob says, “Belay yourselves, for the Pirates of the Black Swan board the main deck to perform bone rattlin’ pirate rock in full pirate regalia, with nautical wit and mayhem. Guaranteed to get your peg leg a tappin' with nautical wit and seafaring music.” The band explains, “We are a five piece crew with strong vocals, two guitars, woodwinds, harmonica and fiddle. Some dancing and singing by the wenches. A costumed extravaganza. Come in pirate gear if it suits you. No parrots, please. Come aboard and sail with us.” Your editor enjoys this act, the only one he likes that uses backing and loop tracks, because they are still very musical and quite entertaining. Many of the twenty or so shanty fans who gather around the long wooden dinner table in the restaurant's cozy upstairs meeting room are volunteers with the Los Angeles Maritime Institute. They sail ‘tall ship’ sail boats for youth training programs run by the Institute. For them, learning the songs that powered the labor on the 19th century clipper ships has become an extension of learning to sail the ships themselves. Added attractions are Alan's pennywhistle and concertina, Jeff's banjo, Kim's collection of flutes, and Dustin and Lindsay's robust baritone voices. When the table fills up, more chairs are set up around the room. And the Guinness flows freely till about 10:30 pm.” Venue is celebrated in the Yahoo! Travel Guide as “the only Authentic British Restaurant in the South Bay of Los Angeles.”

8 pm “TRIPPIN’ THE ‘60S” with BARRY McGUIRE and JOHN YORK (The Byrds) at the venue named in FolkWorks as L.A.’s best intimate acoustic listening room venue - The Coffee Gallery Backstage, 2029 N Lake Av, Altadena; reserv 626-398-7917; info www.coffeegallery.com. Both shows sold out last time Barry & John played here, hence this double night smash.
+
BARRY McGUIRE stepped into the public eye in 1963 on the Andy Williams Show as the gravelly voiced lead singer of the New Christy Minstrels. He launched his musical career with the million-sellers "Green, Green" and "Green Back Dollar." In 1965, at the heart of the peace movement, McGuire went solo. His growing awareness of social hypocrisy was expressed in his third hit "Eve of Destruction" which echoed around the world as an anthem of the times.
+
Three years later, Barry was cast as the male lead in the original Broadway production of the musical "Hair." Once again his voice was heard proclaiming the ideals of a radical generation. Dick Clark says, “When world events collide with “Rock&Roll” you get Barry McGuire.” He has brought “Trippin’ the ‘60s” to the radio audience of “Tied to the Tracks,” where listeners were thrilled.
+
JOHN YORK is currently working with Barry in the show. John is best known for his work as a member of the world-renowned Folk Rock/Country Rock group, the Byrds. His vocal and instrumental talents have kept him in the company of such musical luminaries as Roger McGuinn, Gene Clark, Clarence White, Nicky Hopkins, Mac Rebenack (Dr. John,) Doug Sahm (The Sir Douglas Quintet,) The Mamas and Papas, Johnny Rivers, Lightnin’ Hopkins, Rick Danko and Richard Manuel (The Band) and many others. The TV show “The Place Where I Am Dreaming” featured John’s artistic collaboration with his wife, artist Sumi Foley. Recently, John has composed and recorded music for the lyrics of Kim Fowley on "West Coast Revelation." The duet "Redneck Ninja" highlights John's creative partnership with acclaimed songwriter Patrick Brayer. In 2007, John played concerts in Japan for the third time. Tix, either show, $20.

Critically acclaimed singer-songwriter Taylor is a Renaissance man whose determination and dedication have permeated all facets of his life. He had a brief stint as a pro golfer before turning to music, then took a break in the '80s to become one of the foremost thoroughbred racing handicappers on the East Coast, AND a good enough blackjack player that he was eventually banned from every casino in Atlantic City. Fortunately for all of us, he returned to music. While he is best known for the hit songs he's written for others ("Wild Thing," "Angel Of The Morning," etc.) he's been concentrating on his own music of late. He performed at McCabe’s with Carrie Rodriguez a couple of summers ago, and now they're thrilled to be bringing him back on his own. Tonight will be a family affair as well, as Chip's brother, actor Jon Voight, will join in. And Kendel Carson, singer, songwriter, and fiddler extraordinaire, opens the whole shebang. Tix, $16.

SATURDAY, OCTOBER 31

Today is Halloween, the old All Hallows Eve. In America, it is a commercial enterprise to market little misshapen plastic skulls with orange lights in the eye sockets and other bizarre specialty goods (all made in China) and billions of small candy bars (all made with dangerous high fructose corn syrup). The monetary worth of the day and evening and the decorations and cheesy costumes and accouterments for the days leading up to it are second only to the annual orgy of buying for Christmas.

But L.A. remains the least diverse radio market in the US (even though it’s the largest US radio market), so any show that spins folk-Americana CDs in this town is cause for celebration. And, KPFK has vacillated on whether or not Mary Katherine’s show will be aired regularly, or at all. Please take note, and let KPFK hear your preferences.

Mon, Nov 2; artists’ workshop:
7:30 pm “THE ART OF STAGE PRESENCE (FIRST IMPRESSIONS)” at the venue named in FolkWorks as L.A.’s best intimate acoustic listening room venue - The Coffee Gallery Backstage, 2029 N Lake Av, Altadena; reservations 626-398-7917; info www.coffeegallery.com. Venue impresario Bob Stane says, “Classes and seminars to make your life fuller and richer. Perhaps make some money. Have fun and have "ah, ha!" moments. Make the most of the opportunities life offers. Especially in Southern California. Live, savor, enjoy! First: Be ready for your close-up. ‘Stage Presence’ is a great gift for yourself or anyone else who wants to trod the stage. Cut years off of the painful climb up the ladder of performing success. All in first class stageshow form at The Coffee Gallery Backstage.”
+
Bob adds, “At long last and after years of strong suggestions, we are introducing a class in stagecraft along with numerous guides, in writing, by Bob Stane on how to communicate with venue owners. Get that gig! He will give you hints about what a club owner wants in order to hire you. You will also get the low down on how to appeal to the media. Good stories mean more paid admissions and CD sales. It is called ‘Value Added.’ Be valuable.
+
“On stage, learn additional skills to conduct yourself to give the audience its full money's worth encouraging the venue owner to have you back. Your new, exciting, full show will encourage thrilled audience members to purchase CDs the better to replicate and remember their ‘live’ experience.
+
“When you do auditions, and everyone does, you will be better positioned to get the job and climb the ladder to enhanced success. The instructor is Catherine MacEllerhan. a regular performer of dance and stage craft at The Coffee Gallery Backstage plus many other disciplines and venues. Send her inquiries: caiporacat@aol.com. Send her an e mail and ask for her biography. She has accomplished more things than most 3 other persons combined.
+
Catherine will illustrate how to “move” on stage. Proper dress and movement (body language) will be covered. This is an acting job. Learn how to do it. Proper stagecraft is the last thing most musicians learn and the one that gives the most bang per impression on stage. ‘Celebrity’ is the ability to conduct yourself on stage so skillfully that the audience can not take their eyes off of you.
+
“Is it worth $25? Look at it this way....’if you pick up only one hint that increases the quality of your over all presentation, you will have paid for the seminar many times over. For the rest of your career. And it is tax deductible as a business expense.’ Let's get ourselves into the proper century. These classes are appropriate for all levels of skill or just for fun!
+
“This 3 hour workshop will leave you wanting more just as you hope to leave your audience. Areas to be covered are making an entrance and claiming your space. This is where the fun begins! Remember those Theda Bara eyes? How about the way she moves? Practice how to take the space and make it yours. We will explore physical movement techniques to express emotions while captivating your audience. Anticipation is in the air...if you dare!” Cost is $25; payment & reservations in advance are recommended. Space is limited. Call and leave your phone number at 626-398-7917.

Tue, Nov 3:
8 pm HANS YORK & JAMES HURLEY at the venue named in FolkWorks as L.A.’s best intimate acoustic listening room venue - The Coffee Gallery Backstage, 2029 N Lake Av, Altadena; reservations 626-398-7917; info www.coffeegallery.com. Each has performed multiple times on radio’s “Tied to the Tracks.” They’re wonderful separately, and your editor expects a dynamite show with them performing together. Bob Stane tells us (if you can buy this yarn), “A strong kinship formed between York and Hurley when, while on separate, unrelated expeditions in the Amazon, both were captured by renegade civil servants. Thrown together in a jungle compound, the two devised an ingenious plan. Carving instruments from firewood with little more than their fingernails, they performed a set of hastily written songs so mesmerizing and entertaining their captors were left dazed with astonishment. While the guards were incapacitated they made good their escape. After a long, difficult journey and many strange adventures, they finally reached the West Coast of the U.S., where they now tour frequently.”
+
Okay, now for the verifiable facts. Kerrville New Folk Winner Hans York creates music with brilliant emotional momentum. He's a consummate musician, traveling between folk, jazz, and pop effortlessly, while his voice soars above it all. Seeing him live, you understand that you are experiencing a world-class talent. His joy is infectious and his chops are superior. His voice feels smooth, silky, and unique, with a breathtaking three octave range that pulls you right in. Richly textured as well as utterly intimate, a true Renaissance musician that is skilled in many genres, knowing exactly how to blend them, and with the ability to sweep you off your feet. More at www.hansyork.com

Recently named by Folkworks magazine as "One of the Top Ten Live Acoustic Male Singer-Songwriters in L.A." James Hurley's eloquent guitar, smooth voice, and masterful writing combine to create a seductive blend of jazzy, blues-pop-folk that has been called "Sting meets the Beatles...Clapton makes the introductions". His third solo release “Tempest in a teacup” reinforces his well-deserved reputation as a consistently compelling artist whose music is a reflection of the life he lives. Wed, Nov 4, in Ojai:
7 pm THE BATTLEFIELD BAND plays the Ojai Concert Series at Matilija Auditorium, Matilija Jr High School, 703 El Paseo Rd, Ojai. The Battlefield Band hasn't been in Ojai since 2005. Series producers Shane and Kelly tell us, “We are proud and excited to be hosting the triumphant return to town of Scotland's most celebrated Celtic band. Often imitated, never duplicated. This is not a show to be missed! Please note, this show will be held at the Matilija Auditorium. If you have never been, please give yourselves a little more time to get there and find parking. For more information call Shane at 805-665-8852. For tickets go to www.ojaiconcertseries.com
+
Under their banner “Forward with Scotland’s Past,” Battlefield Band have been performing on the international scene for more than three decades, inspired by their rich heritage of Celtic music and fired by the strength of the modern Scottish cultural scene. The band, who pioneered the integration of bagpipes with fiddle, keyboards, guitar and voice, mix the old songs and tunes with new self-penned material, playing them on a unique fusion of ancient and modern instruments: bagpipes, synthesizers, fiddles, guitars, cittern, bass, whistles, and bouzouki.
+
Founded by a group of friends in 1969 and named after the ‘Battlefield’ area of Glasgow, Battlefield Band now perform throughout the world, playing to audiences in Europe, Australia, Asia, the Middle East & Canada, as well as more than 60 cities annually in the United States. Their music is played regularly on National Public Radio’s "Thistle and Shamrock" program, and they are frequent guests on Minnesota Public Radio’s "A Prairie Home Companion". In 2003, The Battlefield Band was awarded Best Live Act at the first annual Scots Trad Music Awards.
+
Shane adds, “This is the band that others measure themselves against. Over the years new members have brought with them new ideas, new music, new instruments, attitudes and influences, leading to continued creativity, freshness and enthusiasm. After 30 years they still lead the way for Scottish music, always involving their ever widening audience as they travel the world.”

8 pm DROPKICK MURPHY’S with special guests YOUTH BRIGADE, THE FLATLINERS, and THE INSURGENCE, at the Grove of Anaheim, 2200 E Katella Av, Anaheim 92806; 714-712-2700. Hear music samples, get show info & tix, at www.nederlanderconcerts.com/events/event_info.asp?ID=1691. We can’t tell you a thing about all those opening acts. But we do know that DROPKICK MURPHY’S are plenty good. They’re Boston natives who formed their band in 1996 and were originally just a group of friends looking to play music for fun. With music that’s a blend of rock, Irish folk, “and hardcore” combined into one loud, raucous, chaotic mix they call their own, the band has gone on to release four full length albums, over ten singles and two EPs. Dropkick Murphy’s firmly believe in expressing a working class solidarity, friendship, loyalty and self- improvement as a means to improving society, and those themes are evident in their music’s subject matter. When they performed in Anaheim last year, the Orange County Register said, “Through it all, no matter how aggressive the music gets or how vociferously frontman Al Barr growls, the Murphy’s maintain a thick-skinned optimism: "Take another ride on the sunshine highway," they sing, "take another ride, try to turn it around." It’s an “All for one, one for all” vibe. Tix, $25 advance, $27.50 day of show.

Fubar is a well known gay bar. Info from whiskeydckfubar@aol.com. No cover.
