Acoustic Americana Music Guide, Oct 9 through 15

.
.
YIKES! Our previous edition left out a MAJOR festival. That and more new additions are in here!
.
.
Read JOEL OKIDA’s review of WPA (Works Progress Administration) superstar band at Largo in L.A., Oct 6; it’s at
+

.
.
We’re deep into FALL FESTIVAL season, and waaay too many fine ones happen this weekend. (We warned you in the last edition that Sunday, Oct 11 is especially crazy and we’ve added even MORE festivals and other gigs that happen on Saturday and / or Sunday).
+
An outline of festivals this weekend:

There’s the annual SEASIDE HIGHLAND GAMES with its multiple stages of music in Ventura;

the annual TASTE OF FOLK MUSIC / TASTE OF ENCINO centers on the free folk & bluegrass music stages in Encino Park on Sunday;

the annual BLUESAPALOOZA / THUNDERFEST has several venues Saturday in Covina, including the Fret House;

fans of Big Band Jazz and its continuing influence across so many genres, will thoroughly enjoy the four-day ARTISTRY IN RHYTHM ~ A STAN KENTON ALUMNI REUNION with concerts, panels, seminars and film presentations, presented by the Jazz Institute at the Four Points Sheraton, near LAX;

the 38th annual SANTA BARBARA OLD TIME FIDDLERS' CONVENTION is Sunday in Goleta;

AND a new ACCORDION FESTIVAL in Orange County happens, too, on Sun, Oct 11;

OC has two festivals, as THE GREAT AMERICAN RAGTIME PIANO SHOW happens Sunday in Fullerton;

the annual MONROVIA FESTIVAL happens in that charming San Gabriel Valley burg, all weekend;

CASTAIC DAYS is all day Saturday at Castaic Lake, and features only original music;

the annual UNDERWOOD FAMILY FARMS FALL FESTIVAL continues through the month in Moorpark;

PLUS, farther away:
the 12th annual TRAIN SONGS FESTIVAL happens Saturday down in Poway (North San Diego County);

the 4th annual JOSHUA TREE ROOTS MUSIC FESTIVAL is in the desert all weekend;

the annual LONE PINE FILM FESTIVAL, Oct 9-11, includes a fine concert, and more;

AND, this is as strong a week and weekend of first-rate folk-Americana shows in clubs and coffeehouses and concert halls as we’ve ever presented. Oh the tension of soooo many decisions where to go, and how to get from two or three early events to a couple of late ones, and the foregone conclusion that you’ll be taking the hammer to the piggybank.
+
Yep, obviously, October is Rocktober, even in the land of acoustica. There’s an abundance of music indoors and out throughout this month.
+
Of course, it’s all here in the Guide, along with sooooo much REAL music you can see and hear LIVE, without embellished studio overproduction, soulless drum machines, pitch correction software, or other treatless tricks from Big Music’s bag of nonmusical fakery.

Herein is an almost incomprehensible number and variety of live acoustic performances all across the L.A. region, at festivals everywhere, and on radio shows that feature live performances and/or interviews with acoustic musicians that are available on the web. So go enjoy some wonderful live acoustic music!
+
OCTOBER’s live acoustic performances happen at concert halls, coffeehouses, clubs, bars, parks, band shells, fall festivals, and theaters and amphitheaters indoors and out, always awaits you at

WELCOME!
Without question, the Los Angeles region now has the greatest number of live acoustic performances of anyplace in America, and possibly in the world. Much of it is simply WONDERFUL, including club and coffeehouse gigs, performing arts center and theater concerts, indoor and outdoor shows, and a steady parade of festivals that include a healthy acoustic music presence. In addition, for those planning travel and our readers elsewhere, the Guide always includes a vast variety of acoustic music festivals all over the planet. And unique to the Guide, descriptions are included in our extensive listings, rather than simple calendar listings where you need to recognize a performer’s name to know the genre of acoustic music. (Lots of places tell you who, where, and when. We tell you that, plus the all-important “what.”) Yep, we “Guide” you through the live acoustic music scene.
+
RECURRING EVENTS include residencies, series, showcases, and open mics, and all these are numerous in the Southern California acoustic music universe. We generally add them to the Guide’s calendar one week at a time, as dates approach, because there are so many of them AND because it gives us a chance to learn who is playing.
+
RADIO SHOWS that regularly feature live acoustic performances are included, provided there is a way to hear them in Los Angeles. With precious few exceptions, hearing these in L.A. requires internet listening, and we give you the necessary URLs.
+
GETTING YOUR GIG LISTED: We welcome your feedback, and news of your acoustic Americana and acoustic renaissance music shows (send us gig notices in our format, please; see any listed show for an example) please DON’T expect us to re-type info that you have locked into a jpg – send us plain text, so we can work with it! Send to us at tiedtothetracks@hotmail.com.

Yes, we get HUNDREDS of emails every week, so please give us as much advance notice as possible for your event!

PLEASE DON’T send us anything through myspace email. It’s esoteric, it cannot be auto-forwarded into a “real” email account, and we just can’t keep up with it. (Myspace “friends” are great, and we DO welcome you there!) We don’t update the Myspace site very often anymore. It’s really just an archive of old news at www.myspace.com/laacoustic

They don’t get to California often, They’ve earned a “Listener Favorite” on radio’s “Tied to the Tracks.” They’re quite wonderful. The Chicago based folk duo of Jacquie Manning and Rich Prezioso say it has taken them years of careful indecision to develop a repertoire they describe as "Celtic to cowboy" Superb musicianship and showmanship, award-winning songwriting, and a strong sense of tradition has made them, as Dirty Linen Magazine said, "one of the most polished, inventive, and entertaining shows on the circuit." They all the finest folk clubs and festivals constantly. Their recordings, "Waltz of the Wallflowers" and "Time Flies" , and "Raw" cover all these styles. They both sing, they both play guitars and an array of other instruments. They even yodel. A fun, national act. Polished and experienced. It took some doing to get them. Eliza Gilkyson delighted listeners when she performed live on radio’s “Tied to the Tracks.” Eliza grew-up in a musical family with a father renowned for his film scores. Now based in Austin, Texas, her Southern Cal concerts are homecoming events, and her live performance on radio’s “Tied to the Tracks” remains a talked-about listener favorite. Her brother Tony Gilkyson is an in-demand L.A. musician, but Eliza has played the world. In addition to Eliza’s eighth and newest CD “Beautiful World” (2008, on Red House Records), Joan Baez chose two of Eliza’s songs for her own new album, “Day After Tomorrow.” In 2008, Eliza was chosen to deliver the keynote address to the International Folk Alliance Conference and to perform on the “Cowboy Train” across Canada. Along with her concert tours, she plays benefits for women’s shelters and environmental causes. Her songs reflect a consciousness of our times and love and longing.

He’s Maine's favorite folk singing, songwriting troubadour. The songs Mallett writes and sings are filled with passion, evocative imagery, and a sense of the inevitable passage of time. The loss of American towns and rural landscapes is the subject of many of his songs, as are the issues of wilderness preservation and the struggle of the common man. David Mallett hails from a small town in northern Maine, and in a career that spans four decades, his music has traveled to all corners of the world. His songs have received international acclaim, and one of them, "Garden Song", has been translated into several languages and is one of America's most popular folk anthems. Other singers who have recorded Mallett's songs include Emmylou Harris, Alison Krauss, Hal Ketchum, Pete Seeger and even the Muppets. In the millennium edition of the Bangor Daily News, in his home state, he was named along with Marshall Dodge, Andrew Wyeth, Stephen King, Edna St. Vincent Millay and others, one of the most memorable "Mainers" of the twentieth century. And in 2003 the readers of FOLKWAX (www.folkwax.com) voted him Artist of the Year, and his album "Artist in Me" Album of the Year. More at www.davidmallet.com. ZACH LUPETIN AND THE DUSTBOWL REVIVAL are a Venice- based hillbilly jazz orchestra that features an ever-evolving group of over ten local folk musicians whose instruments include cornet, trumpet, tuba, clarinet, trombone, mandolin, washboard, harmonica, guitars and more. They take you on a tour of traditional American music with a thoroughly modern twist. Led by the howling, growling Zach Lupetin, who writes all their songs, The Dustbowl Revival has been bringing their high energy, vaudevillian shows to Californians for a few years now and they are close to finishing their second full length LP "You Can't Go Back To The Garden Of Eden."
+
MARK PLATT‘s experience in the music business goes back to the early ‘80s, first as an artist and then as an employee of Rhino Records, back when the record label was in its infant stages. By the mid ‘80s, Platt had returned to performing full-time and formed the band, The Real Impossibles. Their 1986 EP, “Play Loud” was produced by Plimsouls’ (“Million Miles Away”) front-man Peter Case, and The Real Impossibles video, “Turn My World” was featured on MTV that same year. More recently, Platt’s songs have been featured on TV shows such as Queer Eye for the Straight Guy, E-News True Hollywood, and Passions. He continues to write music for a variety of TV shows. www.myspace.com/marcplattmusic

MARY COPPIN just always wrote songs. Starting from at least age 3 when she wrote new words over the songs on the radio and age 4 when she wrote a song to the music she heard coming out of the washing machine. Did we mention she was the odd-ball of her family? "I was a curly-haired girl in a long straight hair world." While growing up in Arizona she didn't plan on being a performer (BAD stage fright!) but always dreamed of others recording her songs. Then one day her mentor, songwriter Phil Swan said, "You should go to Kerrville." Mary said "What's Kerrville?" In 1998 Mary did enter Kerrville's songwriting competition. Stage fright was alive and well, "I was a deer in the headlights," but founder Rod Kennedy liked what he heard and even though Mary didn't win (although it is often reported that she did), Rod booked her as a Main Stage performer for the following year. So since Mary had had a terrible time just being able to play two songs in a row for the contest, she thought to herself, "I guess I better get an act together." And while she was at it, she recorded a CD too. Now Mary has gone on to perform across the country and is the winningest unsigned songwriter out there. She's garnered too many awards to list, but some highlights include the top prize (out of over 30,000 entries) in The John Lennon Songwriting Contest, 1st place in The Telluride Troubadour Competition and Winner of the "Best Out Of County" category in The Orange County Music Awards. www.marycoppin.com

DEANNA PINO says, “A transplant from New York City, I found myself on the stage of Hotel Café, Genghis Cohen and Kulaks here in Los Angeles after discovering my love for songwriting in just a few short years. Originally from Boston, I graduated from Emerson College with a BFA in musical theatre and made my theatre rounds on Broadway when I ultimately realized that I wanted to communicate my ideas and perspectives on a different level. After picking up the guitar I knew I had finally found what I was good at and haven’t looked back since. In Sept. of '08 I released my debut CD, ‘You Left Me Standing’ which is dedicated to missing and recovered children who have been kidnapped by a parent and/or guardian. THE LAUREN ADAMS BAND with NICK KIRGO (www.myspace.com/nicholaskirgo), MARK “POCKET” GOLDBERG (www.myspace.com/pocketgoldberg), and DEBRA DOBKIN (www.debradobkin.com) adds formidable talent to all that Lauren brings already. "Lauren Adams has A CD here that is infectious, the lyrics and sweet melodies along with some sweet slide work make you want to keep listening, a very well done recording. The opening track "Poor to Carry It" really is stoked with emotion, this slide just cuts to my heart, love the texture of her music." ~ Jim Moulton - Country Stars Online. On L.A.’s indie music scene, Lauren Adams has developed a reputation for giving her heart and soul to her music. Adams’ music is a fusion of rock, folk, country, and blues, true roots Americana. Others have dubbed Lauren as “Lucinda Williams meets The Eagles.” She has combined her dedication to keeping things real with her spirit of giving back. By doing so, Adams has become a respected singer-songwriter in California and beyond. More at www.laurenadams.com

+
When people learn that singer-songwriter SHANA MORRISON is the daughter of music legend VAN MORRISON, the first thing they want to know is how much she has been influenced by her father. Van Morrison's writing has influenced his daughter's work, but not tremendously. Shana's gritty and bluesy approach to pop/rock and roots rock actually owes a lot more to female singer-songwriters like Bonnie Raitt and Melissa Etheridge. Whatever genre in which she seems to be operating at any given moment, what always remains the same is Shana's wide-ranging voice, which Rolling Stone calls "...a smooth, elastic voice and a style that lands between jazz chanteuse and rock chick..." 7:30 pm SMALL POTATOES play the Fallbrook Americana Music Series (FAMS) at Fallbrook Woman’s Club, 238 West Mission. Tickets are sold at Major Market and the door. Call 760-723-7255 for information. Small Potatoes, AKA Rich Prezioso and Jacquie Manning, are a superb eclectic Chicago-based duo who earned a “Listener Favorite” on radio’s “Tied to the Tracks” with their original, “1000 Candles, 1000 Cranes.” Small Potatoes chose their name in 1993 saying if they didn’t make it the name would be a reminder of their limitations and if they did, it would be wryly amusing. Since then they have traveled a million miles while appearing on every major folk stage in the nation and being popular repeat performers. Their music is wonderfully eclectic, as they say, “…through carefully developed indecision” covering cowboy to Celtic. If they have a motto it is, “Make ‘em laugh, make ‘em cry, make ‘em think.” Prezioso’s song, “1000 Candles, 1000 Cranes” has been named by Rich Warren of WFMT Radio in Chicago as one of the most outstanding songs written in the last 50 years. Manning and Prezioso have two great voices, fine guitar, some tin whistle, mandolin, and bodhran for an act that is a truly rare blend of vocal and instrumental abilities. LOS ANGELES AREA acoustic music performances:
.
.
Sat, Oct 10, on broadcast & web radio:
6-8 am Special edition of “ALIVE & PICKING” this morning, hosted by MARY KATHERINE ALDIN on KPFK 90.7 FM in Los Angeles, worldwide at www.kpfk.com. The long gone “Wildwood Flower” visits “Alive & Picking,” as longtime music programmer Ben Elder guest hosts with Mary Katherine and lends support this morning. +
As you may know, we do not usually list radio shows UNLESS they feature live acoustic performances. This show does not. But L.A. remains the least diverse radio market in the US (even though it’s the largest US radio market), so any show that spins folk-Americana CDs in this town is cause for celebration. And, KPFK has vacillated on whether or not Mary Katherine’s show will be aired regularly, or at all. Please take note, and let KPFK hear your preferences.

Free entertainment, tips only, in a great place, with nice people and good music. Vin Fiz Flyer tells us, “Old town Glendora is a kinda sleepy small Midwest town plopped into Southern California. These early morning concerts sound like a wacky idea, but they’re well-attended by musicians as well as music lovers! A car club meets at the Cafe next door every Saturday for breakfast, and they park their assorted ‘babies’ out front for you to peruse too. Come on by and start your weekend out right.” Check with venue to see if there is a concert scheduled for today.

In L.A., the show is broadcast on KPCC 89.3 FM, and repeats Saturday night, 6-8 pm and Sunday Noon-2 pm. But if you’re in L.A., it’s much better to find a web simulcast from somewhere; that’s because KPCC has no other music shows and they do not know how to control the levels for music performances, causing frequent peaking and signal cut-out.

7 pm DOUG MACLEOD at the venue named in FolkWorks as L.A.’s best intimate acoustic listening room venue - The Coffee Gallery Backstage, 2029 N Lake Av, Altadena; reservations 626-398-7917; info www.coffeegallery.com. He earned a “Listener Favorite” on radio’s “Tied to the Tracks.” brings blues, storytelling, humor, guitar and voice. He is a master of the acoustic blues. “Doug MacLeod, now there’s a man who can really play the Blues!” – David ‘Honeyboy’ Edwards, Delta Blues legend.
+
Doug MacLeod is one of the last remaining Bluesmen who learned from the old masters, lived the music, survived the life, and now continues to carry forward that valuable tradition. Within the Blues world, MacLeod is known for his quality recordings which feature superb songwriting, guitar wizardry and warm soulful vocals and for his wit and unforgettable live performances.
+
Whether picking or playing bottleneck on his guitar, MacLeod’s relentless right hand, with its churning bass and intricate finger-picking, prompted James Jensen of Acoustic Guitar Magazine to write, “Real excitement is created by MacLeod’s highly rhythmic acoustic guitar.” Besides being a heart-wrenchingly powerful live performer, Doug is also an extremely gifted storyteller and songwriter. His songs are borne from experience. He entertains and draws his audience closer by telling the stories that inspired the songs.
His songs have been covered by many artists including Albert King, Albert Collins, Coco Montoya, Joe Louis Walker, and Eva Cassidy. His music is also heard on many TV movies and on the hit show “In the Heat of the Night.” It’s no wonder that when Doug was the host of the show, “Nothin’ But The Blues” on KKJZ Radio Los Angeles.
+
Want more? Venue impresario Bob Stane shared some of his fan mail:
“Thanks for bringing back Doug MacLeod! It is said that he learned from some of the great blues men. In my opinion Doug learned and has gone way beyond them. His songs, voice and slide guitar skills are second to none. He has a captivating stage presence and great stories. Doug takes you back to the south with the best blues you will ever hear. Thanks again for bringing us these special performers.” ~ Kerry and Pat Bower.

8 pm DAVID MALLETT plays the Caltech Folk Music Society concert series in Dabney Hall on the Caltech Campus, 322 S Michigan Av, Pasadena; www.folkmusic.caltech.edu; 626-395-4652, or toll-free 888-2CALTECH (1-888-222-5832). One of America's true original troubadors with a career spanning four decades. He’s recorded 14 albums, performed in clubs, concerts halls and outdoor festivals across the U.S., Canada and Europe, and appeared on numerous national broadcasts, including Prairie Home Companion. His songs, including his classic “Garden Song”, have been recorded and performed by hundreds of other singers, ranging from Pete Seeger to Alison Krauss.
+
8 pm TIM EASTON plus FRANK FAIRFIELD at the Folk Music Center & Museum, 220 Yale Av, Claremont 91711; 909-624-2928; www.folkmusiccenter.com. Tim Easton a songwriter characteristically telling the truth about himself. From the streets of Prague where people casually drop the phrase “Before the revolution” or the wilds of Alaska where young men can be lured into too much escapism, to the gutters of Amsterdam where a psychedelic hangover feels strangely comfortable, Easton sends postcards home in the form of honest songs, honestly recorded. They’re not all pretty pictures, but sensitive ears will hear someone assembling the courage and fortitude to change things that must be changed. In the battles of life, Easton says, songs themselves can be ammunition.

emith (they prefer lower-case)
This duo received their first radio play on “Tied to the Tracks,” and since then, they have built a sizable fan base. Sabrina says, “This intoxicatingly intriguing acoustic duo has been growing an eclectic and enthusiastic audience since guitarist Stevie Gurr (formerly with Dr. John, and Elvin Bishop) met singer/guitarist Carol Ann Ives in 2003 at the crossroads ‘between Los Angeles and the infamous Inland Empire.’ Calling them ‘alternative acoustic pop’ might tell you where to find them, but would entirely miss their unique sound, songs, look and feel. They've been described in music press reviews as "Fleetwood Mac meets acoustic Led Zeppelin, Emmylou Harris and B.B. King in a kind of edgy sandwich seasoned with humor, passion, and wry sex appeal!" and "Cowboy Junkies atmospherics with Fleetwood Mac and Aimee Mann pop sensibilites." They can rock it with a full band (check out their ultra-catchy video "High Sierra" on their website), but we dig 'em as an acoustic duo -- an act with solid roots in folk, country, blues, and Celtic, but is still definitely ‘Not your father's folk music!’ We are pleased to welcome them to Acoustic L.A.-LIVE!” More at www.emith.com
+
Garret Swayne
Sabrina says, “He's graced our stage before, but we're glad that we can have Garret Swayne back to Acoustic L.A.- LIVE! He's a master song craftsman and an extraordinary folk artist with songs that range from sweet ballads and touching love stories, to laugh-out-loud satires of popular culture, to fun tunes you can't help singing along with. Just when you think you've got him categorized, his next song breaks the mold. Delightful songs with strong melodies, great guitar playing, and intelligent lyrics that tell the story effortlessly are his hallmarks. Don't be surprised if you find yourself humming one of his tunes the next day and trying to recall the turn of phrase that touched your heart, or made you smile and glance at your companion to see if he or she caught it.” More at www.GarretSwayne.com
+
And of course, Sabrina & Craig will perform a few of their songs as well.

Sun, Oct 11, in the OC:
10 am-4 pm 1st ever “ORANGE COUNTY ACCORDION FESTIVAL” aka "The Big Squeeze” at the Orange County Market Place, Orange County Fairgrounds, 88 Fair Dr, Costa Mesa. This is billed as, “musicians come together to help the accordion get its respect back.” It boasts performances of zydeco, polka, folk, jazz, gypsy, tango, Russian, Tex-Mex, Latin, Balkan, rock, and other music styles. Accordionists, squeeze box aficionados and other musicians ranging in ages 8 to 91 years, with talent levels and music styles as equally broad ranging, will join together for a common goal at "The Big Squeeze," the 1st Orange County Accordion Festival on Sunday, October 11, 2009 held in conjunction with the Orange County Market Place, the weekend swap meet at the fairgrounds. The goal: to help the accordion get its respect back while showcasing its´ rich history and cross cultural appeal and adaptability into a variety of music genres, and to have fun.
+
"There is nothing else like an accordion and people who think of it just as something they heard on ‘The Lawrence Welk Show’ a long time ago are really missing out on something wonderful," said Alex Lavruk, one of the featured performers at the Festival who learned to play as a child in a state run music school in the former Soviet Union before immigrating to the United States in 1994.
+
"Over the years, the accordion hasn´t gotten much respect, which is too bad because when all is said and done - the accordion is fun. It´s the only musical instrument that will play bass notes, chords, rhythm, and melody all at the same time and still be portable and relatively easy to learn, "said accordionist Jim Gilman of Yorba Linda and performer at the Festival. "It seems to bring people back to a happier time," he added.
+
Along with Lavruk and Gilman, more than 30 accordionists and several musicians that perform with them, will put on a fanfare of squeeze box styles on four different stages which schedules read more like a culinary menu.
+
Old Style Creole, Cajun and Zydeco will be presented via Grammy nominee for Best Zydeco/Cajun Music, Lisa Haley and the Zydekats with the accordion music of Skip Edwards from Los Angeles .who took up the squeeze box in 1987 when he started touring and recording with Dwight Yoakam. Cousins Joe Fontenot , 75, of Rosemead, and Dempsey Pappion, 55, of Buena Park, both born and raised in Louisiana, will jam old Creole style with accordions and rub boards. Fontenot´s 8 year old grandson John Fontenot will join in on rub board.
+
Los Fabulocos with Kid Ramos, an established blues guitar player, will spice things up with a Tex-Mex blend of traditional stylings, as well as rhythm and blues and rockabilly music utilizing button accordion maestro Jesse Cuevas from East Los Angeles. Cuevas´ accordion infusion is influenced by Louisiana based Zydeco, in particular the music of Clifton Chenier, and the music, from the 1940s, of Los Alegres Del Teran, pioneers of the harmonically rich norteno, corridos and rancheras.
+
The Russian born Lavruk, now from Fontana, plays a 40 year old handmade Italian accordion and a modern Roland digital accordion, and will demonstrate some of his expertise by playing a selection of Italian, Spanish, Mexican, Jewish, Russian, French and Polish songs.
+
Also originating in the Soviet Union is Raving Polka, also known as Limpopo, a four-member folk and comedy troupe, with a long list of awards and gigs throughout the world. They will bring a slice of Russian folk with a twist of jazz, blues, dance and comedy. Their accordionist, Lou Fanucchi of San Diego is an international award winning professional accordionist who has mastered many music styles and has performed with international recognized artists such as Frankie Lane, the St. Louis Symphony, Frank Yankovic, The American Ballet Company and Luciano Pavarotti to name a few. Fanucchi will also present a Tango Nuevo Workshop.
+
An accordionist since 1975, Gigi "Gee" Rabe of Culver City, who was recently given the title of "L.A.´s Accordion Diva," sports a glittering resume, from winning national honors and playing in international folk festivals to contributing music for the "Young and the Restless" and the Disney ride "Toy Story." She holds an M.A. in Ethnomusicology from UCLA, where she is a teaching associate, and has researched, lectured on and written papers on subjects ranging from Americana and sub cultural music to Balkan and Caribbean music.
+
In addition there will be free dance lessons, a special section for accordion related vendors, restaurants and caterers offering food samplings of international cuisine paralleling the popular accordion countries will be featured in the Main Squeeze Stage area.
+
The Accordion Festival will not put a "squeeze" on your wallet. All activities including entrance to the swap meet are included in the price of Market Place admission, which is $2 or FREE with a canned food item to help the Orange County Food Bank. Children 12 and under are free. A complete schedule for "The Big Squeeze" is available at the website www.ocmarketplace.com or call 949-723-6660.

This month brings solo/duo artist, band leader, producer, and side-man extraordinaire CHAD WATSON with his spouse, utterly charming and top-notch chanteuse PAM LOE; smokin' hot San Diego singer-songwriter & showcase host JOE RATHBURN; and award winning Artist-In-Residence DALE LaDUKE.
+
Host Dana Charnofsky says, “This show will feature impressive guitar playing and probably
a few other stringed instruments, as well. It'll be full of amazing and amusing music, so don't miss it! Each act will perform a set, then they will all mix it up together, playing with each other and maybe even creating a new concoction -- who knows?!”
+
CHAD WATSON
Making others shine is one of Chad Watson's specialties as a producer and bass player, but it's as a singer/songwriter where the public really gets to experience his talent. He and wife Pam Loe perform together with upbeat energy, an easy gentility, and in-demand musicianship. Chad asks "what texture can be added to turn a lyric, a melody, and a story into a moving picture?" Then he never fails to paint those pictures for us, playing music he describes as 'Country and Mid-western with a touch of Swamp.' More at www.chadwatson.us
+
PAM LOE
To entertain is Pam Loe's goal, and she accomplishes this with her natural charm and soulful talent. In her many years of performing, she has assimilated a wide variety of musical styles and tastes, ranging from Standards to Folk to Old Time Rock 'n' Roll. She's been nominated for and won many music awards. Performing with husband Chad Watson, Pam exudes such enthusiasm that you get the urge to jump up and join her. More at www.pamloe.com

JOE RATHBURN
Joe Rathburn's music can be placed in the genre called Positive Music. His tunes have purpose, and carry with them more than just chord changes, grooves, catchy melodies, and hooks for the sake of their cool factor. They speak to you directly, uplifting the soul in an instantly tangible way, while remaining fun, interesting, and non-preachy. Add to that Joe's smokin' guitar work, emotive voice, and his wry sense of humor, and this man offers up a complete package. More at www.joerathburn.com
+
DALE LADUKE
A working musician who plays in bands, has a solo career, and hosts a songwriter showcase, Dale LaDuke teaches music, as well. Known for his alluring vocals, his soul-touching tunes speak directly to people, and they feel a connection. Last year Dale was a finalist at the L. A. Music Awards for "Single of the Year (Adult Contemporary)," with his song The Lone Ranger. As the resident artist for Songwriter Sanctum, he performs at our monthly concerts.
Whatever genre in which she seems to be operating at any given moment, what always remains the same is Shana's wide-ranging voice, which Rolling Stone calls "...a smooth, elastic voice and a style that lands between jazz chanteuse and rock chick..." It must be pledge drive time again, since that’s when all the Southern Cal PBS stations trot-out the traditional music and acoustic renaissance music programs that are conspicuously absent the rest of the year. Odd, since these shows are the proven cash cows in pledge drives. Tonight is one of several lavishly filmed live performances of the Celtic Woman troupe. They are five young women musicians influenced by Celtic, folk, pop, classical music and glamorous evening attire. This one is propelled by widely familiar songs like “Danny Boy,” “Ave Maria,” and Enya's “Orinoco Flow,” and fortunately some traditional Irish music, they have become an international phenomenon.

Today is COLUMBUS DAY, recognizing the anniversary of the day in 1492 that the Italian explorer, sailing under the flag of his Spanish monarch sponsors, first landed in the Americas (on San Salvador Island, in the Caribbean). In recent years, there has been a counter-demonstration observance called “Indigenous Peoples Day,” that, when done well, pays homage to the pre-Columbian cultures of the Americas, and when done poorly, vilifies the entire idea of European contact (as if any of us with be here without it).

Tue, Oct 13:
7 pm THE DEVIL MAKES THREE performs a live in-store set at Amoeba Music, 6400 Sunset Bl, Hollywood; 323-245-6400; www.amoeba.com.
+
The Devil Makes Three had the goal of being "an acoustic band but to play our shows like a rock show," the band changed notions of what acoustic music could be. Mixing styles from the ragtime and country music of the twenties and thirties to the rock-and-roll and punk music of their adolescence, The Devil Makes Three pushes the boundaries of acoustic music. Citing influences as varied as Steve Earle, the Reverend Gary Davis, Memphis Jug Band, and Django Reinhardt, the band combines tight vocal harmonies with idiot-savant finger style guitar to create an exciting and original sound. The end result is genuine blues music that thrives as much in a live setting as it does on The Devil Makes Three.
+
Laced with elements of ragtime, country, folk and rockabilly, the critically praised, drummer-less trio - consisting of guitarist/frontman Pete Bernhard, stand-up bassist Lucia Turino and guitarist Cooper McBean - brings forth a genuine approach to acoustic music that is deeply steeped in rhythm and alive with three part harmonies which is pleasingly dissimilar to most other bands in modern music.
+
They have been constantly on tour, selling out dates across the country and in their neck of the woods on the West Coast drawing nearly capacity crowds nightly. This is all word of mouth. For the past 7 years, the Devil Makes Three have garnered fans the old school way, playing a city, making friends, conquering fans and moving on. When they hit the next town, venues are packed with folks that heard from a friend in a city that they'd been before.
+
They’ll do a sampler set today, and play their full concert at the Echoplex on Oct 15, 7 pm (see listing).

Thu, Oct 15:
7 pm THE DEVIL MAKES THREE performs at The Echoplex, 1154 Glendale Bl, Echo Park; 213-413-8200. www.attheecho.com.
More at www.thedevilmakesthree.com. There are other acts on the bvill tonight, so check with venue for set times. Venue is 18+. Tix, $13 advance, $15 day of show.

8 pm PRESTON REED at the venue named in FolkWorks as L.A.’s best intimate acoustic listening room venue - The Coffee Gallery Backstage, 2029 N Lake Av, Altadena; reservations, 626-398-7917; info www.coffeegallery.com. He’s performed live on radio’s “Tied to the Tracks,” and has great press everywhere: “Spectacular…the best one-man show this reviewer has seen since Bruce Springsteen…A terrific performer” ~ The Irish Independent. “…. a major musical talent” ~ Manchester Evening News. “True spellbinding guitar mastery” ~ Guitarist Magazine. “Remarkable…. Mesmerising…” ~ UNCUT. “Will drop your jaw” ~ Playboy. “In a class of his own” ~ London Evening Standard. “Amazing….hypnotic” ~ The Scotsman. “Absolutely unmissable” ~ The Herald. “Heart stopping tour de force” ~ Billboard. “Reed's fiendishly intricate blend of blues, rock, country and metal styles ducks and weaves itself away from measurability” ~ The Irish Times.
+
Welcome to Preston Reed’s guitar revolution. Everything you thought you knew is wrong. All the rules you thought applied have gone. For one night only, logic and reason have left the building and musical magic fizzes in the air, as the New York visionary credited with reinventing the acoustic guitar takes you on a six and twelve string thrill-ride through the impossible and unforgettable. Night after night, venue after venue, Reed’s growing army of converts are unanimous. He came. He soared. He conquered. Pass it on.
+
“He can’t be doing that.” It’s a familiar reaction to the one-man symphonies on Reed’s 15 studio albums, as the maestro fuses chord-based grooves, soaring melodic runs and polyrhythmic percussion with his breathtaking two-handed style. Yet this is not guitar wizardry for its own sake. Unlike many instrumentalists, the power and depth of Reed’s original song writing is as unique as the man’s execution, as blues, rock, funk and jazz meet, embrace, interlock and attack to create a sonic brew quite unlike anything you’ve heard before. Ears prick up. Heads turn. Feet tap. Hearts melt.
+
But “live” is where Preston Reed really comes alive. Walking onstage, he is one man armed with a single ordinary guitar. Then it happens. Before your eyes, Reed morphs into a fully-formed rock ‘n’ roll band, engaging acoustic, electric and resophonic guitars with a visceral display of slaps, taps, harmonic tickles and fretboard pyrotechnics that shred the rulebook and leave audiences breathless across the globe.
+
Preston Reed is changing the music scene one venue at a time. Lend him your ears. Tix, $20.

.
Yes, it’s true -
There are more ACOUSTIC AMERICANA / ACOUSTIC RENAISSANCE music performances EVERY week in the Los Angeles area than the COMBINED TOTAL of ALL OTHER KINDS OF MUSIC!
+
(And that doesn’t even take into account the dozens of electric Americana shows!)
+
If you have trouble believing that assertion, then print this out and see how many pages you’ll need just for the events for the days covered in this edition!
+
Check it yourself: take any edition of the L.A. Times Calendar Section and any edition of the LA Weekly, count-up all the live music shows (you won’t even need to subtract-out the acoustic shows in those two publications, since they hardly list any, anyway) and add them up. THEN, count the number of live acoustic music performances for the same days in the Acoustic Americana Music Guide. We have yet to find a week when the TOTAL of all those other genres of music performances equals the number of live performances of acoustic music in the L.A. area! (Even though you hear very little music from the acoustic genres on the radio here, or read about it in the biggest newspapers, it seems people DO want acoustic music and they will find and support it anyway!
.
================================================================
.
The editor still can’t use the computer as his recovery continues to progress from eye surgery - but he does somehow coax a coalition of the willing to keep it all going.
+
WANT TO HELP? We can send info for you to format and send back to us for inclusion in the Guide! Of course, we want to include YOUR acoustic gigs in Southern Cal or at festivals everywhere (and these days, it’s really important that we receive your events ready to go in the Guide’s format).

This update is made possible by the combined efforts of many, in many places. We continue to format the unbelievable amount of info that the editor already had in the Guide’s database, add as much as we can keep up with from all that pours in, and combine all of it. (He’s got stuff into late 2010 already.) We hope to post the remainder of October’s events soon, and keep this thing going without interruption.

The editor thanks everyone for the cards and letters and tasty edibles and homemade treats, and for whatever well-wishes await in the mountain of emails that he can't yet read. A few at a time, we are starting to read them to him (there were over 2,700 there, waiting, the last time anybody dared to look!)
