If it’s escaped your notice, there’s a great show at the Autry Museum Sunday afternoon at 3:30, with top award-winning cowboy singer-songwriter DAVE STAMEY; and Canadian singer-songwriter (and winner of every kind of music award) JOHN WORT HANNAM has several local dates; and the amazing BOULDER ACOUSTIC SOCIETY is in town from Colorado, playing the Coffee Gallery Backstage Tuesday night at 8 pm.

Annual “COWBOY DAYS” features the CALIFORNIA COWBOYS BAND at The Empty Saddle Club, 39 Empty Saddle Rd, Rolling Hills Estates 90274. Since 1992, the Club members have celebrated the "old cowboy ways" through three days of celebration and two days of competition. Cowboy Days start Fri, with a TGIF Kick Off Party and Calcutta. The Competition starts on Sat and completes on Sun. Events include Team Roping, Cutting, Team Penning, Gymkhana, Trail and youth events.

The big party and dance is held Sat evening, where the day's winners will be awarded their buckles, and on Sun the final events and buckle awards are given. Steve Deming tells us, “As usual we plan on hot competition for the All Around Wrangler and we are bringing back the all around champion Cowhorse. 5:30-10 pm “MONROVIA FAMILY FESTIVAL” along Myrtle Av, in old downtown Monrovia. It’s year-round and weekly, a street festival and farmers market, that’s been running 17 years. RON ELY does authentic and original maritime songs most weeks, usually at Myrtle Av & Colorado or Myrtle Av and Lemon Av, on the North end of the festival. When people learn that singer-songwriter SHANA MORRISON is the daughter of music legend VAN MORRISON, the first thing they want to know is how much she has been influenced by her father. Van Morrison's writing has influenced his daughter's work, but not tremendously. Shana's gritty and bluesy approach to pop/rock and roots rock actually owes a lot more to female singer-songwriters like Bonnie Raitt and Melissa Etheridge. Whatever genre in which she seems to be operating at any given moment, what always remains the same is Shana's wide-ranging voice, which Rolling Stone calls "...a smooth, elastic voice and a style that lands between jazz chanteuse and rock chick..." Although his work has been called the "essence of smooth jazz", his individualistic musical style and interpretation contains elements of pop, rock, hip-hop and fusion. Paul is a Pasadena native and performed with the Rose Parade Herald Trumpets and the Pasadena Junior Symphony earlier in his musical career. He even worked for the Jet Propulsion Laboratory(! – a jazzy rocket scientist?! Whata concept!)

Paul's first album, "Dreamin’," scored rave reviews from ABC Radio International, Cafe Jazz Radio, Opus Broadcasting, Jazz Improv Magazine and Smooth Jazz News and more, and got international radio airplay.

Paul's second CD, "Catalina Cool," features some of the biggest artists in the smooth jazz world, including Michael Lington, Mindi Abair, Paul Jackson Jr., Chris Standring, Jay Soto, Freddie Fox, and Dan Kuramoto of Hiroshima. Universal is handling national distribution and even Paul's own PBS-TV special is in the works.

Paul's band members have equally impressive resumes and hail from such international acts as James Ingram, Stevie Wonder, Celine Dion, Vanessa Williams and Andrea Bocelli. Together, they perform an eclectic set of jazz originals and covers, new-age compositions and soft-rock vocals. Some of Paul's most memorable performances include San Gabriel Civic Auditorium, Dodger Stadium, Royal Concert Hall (Glasgow, Scotland), Concertgebouw Orchestra of Amsterdam, Hollywood Palladium (w/ Spyro Gyra, Marc Antoine, Philippe Saisse) and a PBS show taping at the Orange County Pavilion. TRICK ROPER ON STILTS Jim Townsley, aka TWO TALL TOWNSLEY, is a trick roper who has delighted audiences from Universal Studios to every major Western heritage event in the West. Whether performing on stilts or demonstrating tricks with the lasso at ground level, he entertains young and old alike. Jim does meet and greet while displaying his roping ability and his stilt walking and rope prowess. Performances between 10 am and 2 pm.

SINGING COWBOY MICHAEL T, aka Mike Tcherkassky, has performed live on radio’s “Tied to the Tracks.” He’s well known at the Santa Clarita Cowboy Festival as the singing cowboy on horseback. Here, he’ll stroll afoot strumming his guitar and singing his cowboy ballads on Sunday from 11 am-3 pm. He is a familiar figure and presence at Western heritage events throughout Southern California.

KASMIR’S FABULOUS FLEA CIRCUS is Jim Kasmir’s attraction that amuses and amazes guests with the feats of agility and daring displayed by the cadre of acrobatic insects. A popular form of entertainment during the 1800’s, the 15 minute flea circus performances, set up on a hay bale, always draw crowds. Jim performs four shows between 10 am and 3 pm.

THE BALLOON DUDE. Back by popular demand is the Balloon Dude! He holds a gold medal in international balloon sculpture competition and will create festive, multi-balloon sculptures for guests as souvenirs of the event. “Universal Health Care” and “A Moratorium on Foreclosures” are today’s central themes, and the two themes of an upcoming march and campaign organized by the Poor People’s Economic Human Rights Campaign (PPEHRC). A massive march is envisioned, from the Mississippi Delta to Detroit. The “D2D” march will take place from Nov 2009 to Jun 2010. Artists are organizing events not just along the entire route of the march but, in addition, satellite events in cities all across the country, including L.A. PPEHRC is gathering testimony from America’s cultural visionaries about their struggles to survive as people and to thrive as artists. The organization has always been composed of poor people’s organizations, a movement to end poverty led by the poor themselves. But almost all artists are poor, so PPEHRC has just launched an effort to get 10,000 bands / crews / venues / artists to affiliate to their network by next summer. You can attend and find out about all this and more. Presentations at today’s event will be made by:
- Luis Rodriguez, author of “Always Running” and “The Republic of East LA,” on the importance of artists and their visions in creating a new society that cares for all of us;
- Timeka Drew of Natural High on the importance of artist involvement in the struggle against poverty;
- Cheri Honkala, national director of PPEHRC, with a battlefront report on the struggle against foreclosures and the role of artists in it.

DAVE STAMEY is the 2008 WMA Entertainer of the Year, and a nationally-acclaimed western singer-songwriter. He has performed live on radio’s “Tied to the Tracks.” He was voted Male Performer of the Year by the Western Music Association, and won the Will Rogers Award for Male Vocalist of the Year from the Academy of Western Artists; he won the Songwriter of the Year after being a five-time nominee for the honor. Quite simply, Dave Stamey is one of the most popular Western entertainers working today. It’s a musical extravaganza concert / festival / benefit show for Larry Wines, producer & host of radio’s “Tied to the Tracks.” He reports on and showcases live performances from singer-songwriters and bands in the Americana, folk, cowboy, Cajun, Celtic and bluegrass traditions, and the best of today’s acoustic renaissance musicians.

He produces the Acoustic Americana Music Guide and writes a column and the annual “Best of / Top Ten” for FolkWorks.

After surgery for a detached retina, without health insurance, he faces an uncertain amount of time healing. The syndication of the radio show is on hold, and he cannot use the computer for that and his other work. He temporarily cannot make a living and needs our help.
