Seriously: Throughout 2010, the Guide often ran 100 pages – or more – of 8 ½ x 11 size pages, EVERY WEEK… Yes, there IS that much acoustic music happening out there! And it’s why we’re changing to the new format.

WRITE US at tied to the tracks (at) Hotmail dot com … and THANK YOU for your support!

CRAFTING A USER-FRIENDLY RESOURCE

We publish The Guide in acoustic-music-performance-rich, but acoustic-music-radio-deprived, Los Angeles.

There are SO MANY acoustic performances here each week, and they’re almost universally ignored by the L.A. Times and LA Weekly. So, we bring you more detailed write-ups on acoustic performances than anybody else in Southern California.

And, we tell you about RADIO SHOWS and TV with acoustic music, focusing on those with live acoustic performances. (They’re available mostly on the web, of course, since L.A. broadcast radio is mostly sh-thump-thud, revolving door rehab, pop tart du jour crap.) Each edition of “THE SCENE” has a link to that day’s programs.

We do all we can to bring you news and notices of many, many, MANY acoustic festivals and conferences everywhere, and the constant avalanche of acoustic music performances and events in and around Los Angeles and Southern California.

Thing is, there are SO MANY performances in and around L.A., and we can’t spend forty-to-a-hundred hours a week organizing and formatting and writing about all of them. Hence, some kind of new format was needed. And our readers tell us that the old format – everything under the sun in one continuous presentation, listed by show times – simply took too long to read, or even to search, to find a show in their community. So, we are in the midst of this reinvention.

It’s not easy doing this. It never has been. It requires an astonishing amount of time. We’ll do it as quickly as we can.

It’ll take a while to get each day’s edition of “THE SCENE” crafted – until all 42 possible databases are complete. Forty-two? What? Here it is: There are seven days in a week, and each has events that might be only on the first, or second, or third, or fourth, or last – which could be the fourth or the fifth time that day occurs in any given month. So, there are six variants of each day of the week, and 6 X 7 = 42.

Plus, we need to keep up with all the “SPOTLIGHT EVENTS” and write those listings for THAT section, AND maintain our focus to bring you fresh, timely, relevant and interesting “NEWS FEATURES” each week.

Updated editions will bring more (there’s ALWAYS more) -- as we have time to organize all of it, and can afford the time to spend on it.

And, we’ll keep bringing you news and reviews of the many acoustic music CONFERENCES & FESTIVALS near & far, hither & yon (like, everywhere). WITH YOUR HELP, we’ll keep doing it.

Sat, Feb 26; a “SHOW-OF-THE-WEEK” pick:
8 pm “WOODY GUTHRIE TRIBUTE,” the new show by COUNTRY JOE McDONALD (Country Joe & the Fish) at the CALTECH FOLK MUSIC SOCIETY series in Beckman Institute Auditorium (“Little Beckman”) on the campus, 322 S Michigan Av, Pasadena; 626-395-4652, or toll-free 888-2CALTECH (1-888-222-5832). More on the Caltech Folk Music Series at www.folkmusic.caltech.edu - and check-out other music on campus at Caltech Presents / Caltech Public Events series at www.events.caltech.edu.

COUNTRY JOE McDONALD has been touring his “TRIBUTE TO WOODY GUTHRIE” for the past few years to strong audience acclaim. In his highly-entertaining tribute, Country Joe deftly conveys the charm, talent, and social and political consciousness of the legendary folksinger from Oklahoma. It helps to know that McDonald’s father, Worden, shared Oklahoma’s Dust Bowl roots with Guthrie in the ‘20s & ‘30s. Country Joe opens the tribute with a moving performance of Woody’s best-known tune, “This Land is Your Land,” and takes the audience through a journey of 13 Woody Guthrie songs, all in a strong clear voice that doesn’t mimic Guthrie’s style, but conveys the emotion and energy that defines Guthrie. More at www.countryjoe.com.

The campus ticket office handles the Folk Music Society’s advance tickets, takes credit cards, and is open Noon-5 pm, Mon-Fri; their number is 626-395-4652. As the date gets close, this will likely sell-out. Tickets are $20, $5 for children and Caltech students.

Border Radio’s original “gypsygrass” style is a fusion of bluegrass, classic country and old country sounds. – like that once heard in the days of 100,000 Watt radio from just over the Mexican radio. Deeply rooted in tradition, this is what “country” music is supposed to sound like. "Call it rural Tin Pan Alley, prairie jazz, hand-me-down country, city folk -- Border Radio is an original stew of American music that blasts across all these borders” - Kerrville New Folk Competition.

The Grand Annex is an intimate 100-seat music listening room in the heart of historic downtown San Pedro, offering a wide range of artists and genres, from world sounds to American roots music. Sat, May 7; world music (and now for something completely different…):
8 pm EAST L.A. TAIKO with LYSA FLORES combines innovative reinvention of traditional Japanese percussion with the venue’s ongoing “Ritmos Latinos” series, at the Grand Annex, 434 W 6th St, San Pedro 90731; www.grandvision.org; 310-833-4813. EAST L.A. TAIKO, aka ELAT, led by master drummer MACEO HERNANDEZ, marries Afro-Cuban and Caribbean rhythms with driving Taiko beats – a fiery eclectic blend of world rhythm that travels the globe and takes you right into the heart of Los Angeles. ELAT performs at the Annex with LYSA FLORES, named in Newsweek magazine as one of “20 young Latinos to watch in the new millennium.” A first generation Mexican-American, Flores has been a pioneer in the “EastLos” alternative music scene since her teens, making music that now defines an urban L.A. style.

Thu, May 12; a “SHOW-OF-THE-WEEK” pick:
8 pm PRESERVATION HALL JAZZ BAND and THE DEL McCOURY BAND in a stellar double-bill at UCLA Live, Royce Hall, 340 Royce Dr, on the UCLA campus at Royce Dr between Westwood Bl and Hilgard Av, West L.A.; www.uclalive.org; info 310-825-4401; UCLA ticket office 310-825-2101.

Two pillars of American music from two distinct lineages come together for a wonderfully unlikely evening “to celebrate the glory of tradition and the power of newfound collaboration.” Starting as a sideman the legendary “father of bluegrass” BILL MONROE nearly 50 years ago, DEL McCOURY has broadened the audience for the genre. During that same period, the legendary PRESERVATION HALL JAZZ BAND has defined the tradition of New Orleans jazz. Now, they have converged to perform – and record(!) – an unforgettable mix of bluegrass and traditional jazz. Each band will play individual sets, followed by a soul-stirring joint finale. Tix, $38-63 ($15 for UCLA students).

May 22; a “SHOW-OF-THE-WEEK” pick:
“L.A. ACOUSTIC MUSIC FESTIVAL” returns after a year of hiatus, with ELLIS PAUL, ELIZA GILKYSON, JIMMY LaFAVE, SARAH LEE GUTHRIE & JOHNNY IRION. This year, it’s a one-day event at the Broad Stage Theatre at the Santa Monica College Performing Arts Center, 1310 11th St, Santa Monica; 310-434-3200; www.thebroadstage.com; www.events.smc.edu. Even before we knew the lineup, we were comfortable recommending it as a “Show-of-the-Week” pick, given the talent that Renee Bodie booked the first year, and the fact that this is a MUCH more manageable venue where costs can be contained and ticket prices should be kept to reasonable limits. The festival is a benefit for the nonprofit California Acoustic Music Project.

In 2011, the recurring events herein are part of The Scene for January 26, February 23, April 27, May 25, July 27, September 28, October 26, & December 28.

THE SCENE for today and tonight includes THE ODDS of finding acoustic music in each place listed, from northern Santa Barbara County to south Orange County, from downtown L.A. to the valleys to the Inland Empire, from the desert to the sea.

ALTADENA (just N of Pasadena)

Altadena; 4th WEDNESDAY’S ODDS: 6/7:
THE COFFEE GALLERY BACKSTAGE is the most prolific live acoustic music venue in the Los Angeles region, hosting more nationally-touring acts than any other Southern Cal venue. Shows at the Coffee Gallery Backstage are at 8 pm weeknights and 7 pm weekends, with occasional weekend matinees, at 2029 N Lake Av, Altadena 91001; reservations 626-794-2424; venue phone 626-398-7917; info, show schedules, detailed write-ups, at www.coffeegallery.com. (“the venue named in FolkWorks as L.A.’s best intimate acoustic listening room venue”). Tickets range from $12-20.

Altadena; WEDNESDAY’S ODDS 1/1:
THE COFFEE GALLERY FRONT STAGE, 2029 N Lake Av, Altadena 91001; 626-398-7917. Scene of the 8-10 pm every Wednesday “LAPTOP LYRIC SING ALONG,” hosted by DUANE THORIN. Donna Barnes-Roberts says, “Now, what makes this sing-a-long special is that we are using everyone's laptops to show the lyrics we want to sing!” She’s started a blog, www.cgsingalong.blogspot.com with songs that may be chosen, including links to the lyrics on the web. Donna adds, “That way, everyone who brings a laptop with WiFi can see the lyrics we are singing.” And they’re projected on the wall for everyone else. Invited artists lead sing-alongs, assisted by other musicians who drop by and want to play. Donna says, “This event is not about showing what a great soloist you are – it is about everyone enjoying themselves, and singing - whether or not everyone is in tune (and I expect there will be sour notes - joy is not always pretty).” Duane adds, “Public invited to sing and play along to songs we all know and love. Musicians and singers welcome! No sign up, just show up, sing from the audience or move up front to play along as well. The Coffee Gallery now features soup and sandwiches in the evening, plus coffee drinks, white and dark hot chocolate, pies, smoothies, smiles and good company.” This does NOT take the place of scheduled shows in the Backstage – it’s in addition to scheduled shows there. Get a feel for the scene by catching the Front Stage’s Sunday webcast of the open mic at www.ustream.tv/channel/the-coffee-gallery-community-front-stage – live or archived. All Open Mics here are free to attend or participate.

Sierra Madre; WEDNESDAY’S ODDS 1/1:
SIERRA MADRE FARMERS' MARKET is the scene of the 3-7 pm every Wednesday “ROOTS MUSIC JAM SESSION” with TOM SAUBER, in the parking lot behind the shops on the south side of Sierra Madre Bl, just west of Baldwin Av, in Sierra Madre. Take Baldwin Ave exit N from 210 Fwy. Turn W off Baldwin onto Mariposa and you'll see the farmer’s market tents. Tom tells us, “It won't take the place of Frank & Joe’s [the long-gone Wed night jam] and I know it's not convenient for most, but it's something as long as the weather's nice.” For info, email masaw48@earthlink.net

Sierra Madre; WEDNESDAY’S ODDS 1/3:
CAFÉ 322, 322 W Sierra Madre Bl, Sierra Madre; 626-836-5414; www.cafe322.com. Scene of plenty of booked Americana and roots music shows, with occasional residencies. Everything we’ve seen there is good. Venue specializes in Italian food, has full bar. Check to see who’s playing and go early for a table that lets you see the band.

CULVER CITY

Culver City; WEDNESDAY’S ODDS 4/7:
CINEMA BAR, 3967 Sepulveda Bl (between Washington & Venice), Culver City 90230; www.myspace.com/thecinemabar; 310-390-1328; music series hotline 310-250-1317. It’s often been called “The world’s smallest honky-tonk,” and despite its postage-stamp size, it frequently attracts top musicians. Venue is 21+, and people here are considerate when it’s crowded. Once in a while, there’s a BBQ on the back patio. No cover, bring $ for the artists’ tip jar.

Culver City; WEDNESDAY’S ODDS 2/7:
VINOTEQUE (formerly the SYNERGY CAFÉ), 4437 Sepulveda (at Braddock, just S of Culver Bl), Culver City; 310-482-3490; www.VinotequeLA.com. Great atmosphere, no cover, food / drink purchase expected on nights when there’s live music.

DESERTS & BEYOND

(includes Apple Valley, Barstow, Lucerne Valley, Palm Desert, Palm Springs, Palmdale, Lancaster, Tehachapi, Victorville)

Lancaster; 2nd & 4th WEDNESDAY’S ODDS 1/1:
NICK’S PIZZA, 43755 15th St West, Lancaster. Scene of 6 pm UKULELE CLUB meet. Uke players begin arriving about 5 pm, meeting starts at 6 pm. Newcomers welcome.

Palmdale; WEDNESDAY’S ODDS 2/5:
BUTLER'S COFFEE, 40125 10th St West, Suite I, Palmdale 93551; 661-272-9530; www.butlerscoffee.com/music.html. Butler's owners, PAM & DAVID LOGAN, are long-time lovers and supporters of acoustic music. Indeed, Pam is an accomplished musician and a member of the BROWNE SISTERS, Celtic festival favorites who earned a “Listener Favorite” on radio’s “Tied to the Tracks.” The venue serves food and drink in a rich, comfortable setting, featuring fresh-roasted coffee. Butler's “music guy,” KEVIN BURTON SMITH, has had great success in attracting excellent acoustic music for featured shows here.

Pioneertown; WEDNESDAY’S ODDS 1/7:
PAPPY & HARRIET'S, 53688 Pioneertown Rd, Pioneertown; www.pappyandharriets.com; 760-365-5956. This place is legendary and the absolute most-off-the-beaten-path venue in Southern California. Nevertheless, top musicians and loyal fans of the hallowed old hall keep it going with plenty of rollickin’ honkytonk and more, usually big on Fridays and Saturdays.

Tehachapi; WEDNESDAY’S ODDS 1/1:
FIDDLER’S CROSSING, 206 East F St, Tehachapi 93561; www.grungehobbit.com; 661-823-9994. The scene for the 6:30-10 pm every Wednesday “OPEN MIC NIGHT” at the acoustic music venue next door to a music store. It’s become the gathering place for musicians in Tehachapi, since the demise of Mama Hillybeans. Doors open at 6 pm for sign-ups. $5 cover includes complimentary refreshments.

Victorville; WEDNESDAY’S ODDS 2/5:
THE COCKY BULL, 14180 US 395, Victorville 92392. It’s a desert landmark and everybody famous in pre-“pop country” has played there. These days, it’s primarily a restaurant and honky-tonk dance hall with live music some nights each week.

EAGLE ROCK (See “Pasadena / South Pasadena / Eagle Rock”)

||>o<||>o<||>o<||>o<||>o<||>o<||>o<||

ECHO PARK

Echo Park; WEDNESDAY’S ODDS 1/7:
DOWNBEAT CAFÉ, 1202 N Alvarado St, Echo Park; 213-483-3955.

Echo Park; WEDNESDAY’S ODDS 2/7:
THE ECHO / ECHOPLEX are affiliated venues, but each has a separate entrance. The Echo, 1822 Sunset Bl, Echo Park; 213-413-8200. The Echoplex, 1154 Glendale Bl, Echo Park; 213-413-8200. Web site for both, www.attheecho.com. They frequently work with alt-country and folk-Americana bookers, and book some acoustic renaissance, in addition to lots of alt rock.

Echo Park; WEDNESDAY’S ODDS 2/7:
TAIX 321 LOUNGE, 1911 W Sunset Bl (at Alvarado), Echo Park; 213-484-1265. Though an affordable French restaurant, the place seems to universally be mispronounced as “Tex.” That probably owes to the good portion of folk-Americana, alt-country, new grass, and Southern and Texas-flavored acts booked here.

HOLLYWOOD / WEST HOLLYWOOD

Hollywood; WEDNESDAY’S ODDS 1/10:
AVALON, 1735 Vine St, Hollywood 90028; www.avalonhollywood.com; 323-462-8900.

Hollywood; WEDNESDAY’S ODDS 1/5:
CAFÉ MUSE, 6547 Santa Monica Bl (at Hudson), Hollywood 90038; 323-464-MUSE (6873); www.cafemusela.com. Scene of music or other live entertainment (of various kinds) every night, usually beginning 9:30-10 pm, after the shows end in the surrounding theatre district. Venue has a beautiful piano and a house guitar for musician use, or bring your own instrument. They say, “We welcome people to come by and play anytime - you never know when the Muses might appear!” They tell us, “We are always looking for piano players & musicians to accompany the singers and spoken word artists (or to come in and jam with us).” Email them to be added to their roster, at TheMuses@CafeMuseLA.com. Venue serves vegan & omnivore “comfort food,” fruit smoothies and organic coffee & tea beverages. Early arrival recommended; when there’s entertainment, $5 minimum on food & drink in lieu of cover.

Hollywood; WEDNESDAY’S ODDS 1/7:
CAFÉ WAS, 1521 N Vine St, Hollywood. Usually music here, just a question of what…

Hollywood; WEDNESDAY’S ODDS 1/7:
CRANE’S HOLLYWOOD TAVERN, 1611 N El Centro Av, Hollywood; www.myspace.com/cranestavern. Some nights are jumpin’ with musicians from the local singer-songwriter scene. Venue is between Selma & Hollywood Bl.

Hollywood; WEDNESDAY’S ODDS 1/7:
EL CID, 4212 Sunset Bl, Hollywood; 323-668-0318; www.elcidla.com. A Mexican restaurant and bar that hosts music, sometimes rootsy Americana, sometimes rootsy Latin, sometimes just nouveau loud.

Hollywood; WEDNESDAY’S ODDS 4/7:
HOTEL CAFÉ, 1623 N Cahuenga Bl, Hollywood 90028; www.hotelcafe.com; 323-461-2040. This is absolutely the hippest place in L.A. with acoustic music, though the décor is nothing special at all. They book some touring indies and some of the best L.A.-based artists, and some East Coast-based and European artists always play Hotel Café when they pass through town. Acoustic performers are frequently in the mix of acts scheduled one per hour – check the venue’s schedule carefully and plan for Hollywood traffic so you can be on time. There are very few seats, and those are only available if you order food from the menu, so be prepared to stand. Two full bars, tiny dark restaurant where you can’t hear the music, and tinier table seating area in front of the stage that’s the prime place for music here. Tasty light fare. Cover charge is often more, the later you go. Be sure to state, at the door, which artist you came to see, because that’s how they get paid.

Hollywood; WEDNESDAY’S ODDS (summer only) 1/10:
JOHN ANSON FORD AMPHITHEATRE (aka FORD AMPHITHETRE), 2580 Cahuenga Bl East, Hollywood 90068; 323-461-3673; 323-GO1-FORD; www.FordTheatres.org; box dinner orders 310-652-3797. Across the pass from the Hollywood Bowl, this could be any other city’s best outdoor venue. Smaller than the Bowl or the Greek Theatre, it has splendid acoustics and sound reinforcement, delightful architecture, and lots of history. You can bring your own picnic dinner and wine to any show here. Bookings are done during the winter, through proposals from artists, producers, or music-related organizations. The Celtic Arts Center and Bluegrass Association of Southern California each produce annual extravaganzas here. Other series, like the one booked by Koffeehouse Music, are very inclusive of indies. Check the venue’s schedule for enjoyable outdoor shows and for info on how to prepare your proposal to do a show there.

Hollywood; WEDNESDAY’S ODDS 1/7:
M BAR, 1253 Vine St (at Fountain), Hollywood 90038; 323-856-0036. An eclectic assortment of acts at this supper club and bar, and they have a grand piano.

Hollywood; WEDNESDAY’S ODDS 1/7:
MUSIC BOX AT THE HENRY FONDA THEATRE, 6126 Hollywood Bl (betw Argyle & Gower), Hollywood; 323-464-0808. Cavernous and echo-ey without seats, which is usually the configuration here, it’s still fun, and they do sometimes book roots-Americana or acoustic acts.

Hollywood; WEDNESDAY’S ODDS 1/1:
THE PIG 'N’ WHISTLE, 6714 Hollywood Bl, Hollywood 90028; www.pignwhistle.com; 323-463-0000. Scene of an 8 pm weekly “OPEN MIC.” Sign-ups at 7:30, show at 8 pm. This place, more than ANY other, maintains the charm of “Old Hollywood” of the great clubs of the silver screen era – the interior architecture is amazing. The entertainment is often acoustic lineups, but (almost always) people whose names you’ve never heard anyplace else.

West Hollywood; WEDNESDAY’S ODDS 1/5:
AROMA COFFEEHOUSE, 8539 Sunset Bl, West Hollywood; 323-644-2833.

West Hollywood; WEDNESDAY’S ODDS 1/14:
CAT CLUB, 8911 Sunset Bl, West Hollywood; 310-657-0888. Usually loud rock, but not always.

West Hollywood; WEDNESDAY’S ODDS 1/1:
FUBAR, 7994 Santa Monica Bl (1 blk E of Crescent Hgts), West Hollywood. Scene of the 8 pm every week “WHISKEY DICK WEDNESDAYS,” a roots / honky-tonk night, bringing talented artists like MICHAEL ANN. Series offers 5 cent beer and 10 cent shots of whiskey and other booze, “where the west is still very wild. Say howdy to the craziest party there could ever be,” their promo says. Other nights here bring anything but Americana music, and do not offer such incredibly cheap liquor. Fubar is a well-known gay bar. Info, whiskeydckfubar@aol.com. No cover.

West Hollywood; WEDNESDAY’S ODDS 1/12:
HOUSE OF BLUES - SUNSET STRIP, 8430 Sunset Bl, West Hollywood; 323-848-5100; www.hob.com. Rarely are the shows here acoustic, and they aren’t all that dedicated to the blues, either.

West Hollywood; WEDNESDAY’S ODDS 1/5:
RAINBOW BAR & GRILL, 9015 W Sunset Bl, West Hollywood; 310-278-4232. Like the affiliated Pig ‘n’ Whistle, the entertainment is often acoustic lineups, but (almost always) people whose names you’ve never heard anyplace else.

West Hollywood; WEDNESDAY’S ODDS 1/7:
THE ROXY, 9009 Sunset Bl, West Hollywood; www.theroxyonsunset.com; 310-276-2222. Usually loud rock, but not always.

West Hollywood; WEDNESDAY’S ODDS 1/14:
TROUBADOUR, 9081 Santa Monica Bl, West Hollywood; www.troubadour.com; 310-276-6168. This old club, famous and storied for events of decades past, is neither media-savvy nor media- friendly, so we haven’t often had reason to list them in the Guide. They do host some acoustic and electric Americana shows, including the occasional star from the Austin music scene.

West Hollywood; WEDNESDAY’S ODDS 1/10:
VIPER ROOM, 8852 Sunset Bl, West Hollywood; 310-358-1881. There are two stages here in the place once owned by Johnny Depp. The main, upstairs stage is usually booked with very loud rock acts, often drowning-out the act playing the postage-stamp-size performance space downstairs (once Depp’s private space). Check to be sure the downstairs act you want to see is scheduled before the upstairs stage opens, or don’t bother.

West Hollywood; WEDNESDAY’S ODDS 1/10:
WHISKY A-GO-GO, 8901 Sunset Bl, West Hollywood; 310-652-4202. Usually loud rock, but not always.

Donna adds, “That way, everyone who brings a laptop with WiFi can see the lyrics we are singing.”

Everybody knows the world-famous Coffee Gallery Backstage, with its parade of professional acts. Now, Duane Thorin hosts this new weekly series, wherein invited artists lead sing-alongs, assisted by other musicians who drop by and want to play. Donna says, “There will be a few musicians to keep us together, but this event is not about showing what a great soloist you are - it is about everyone enjoying themselves, and singing - whether or not everyone is in tune (and I expect there will be sour notes - joy is not always pretty).” Duane adds, “Public invited to sing and play along to songs we all know and love. Musicians and singers welcome! We’ll start with all the Beatles songs and go forward and back from there.
