Thursday to Monday: “embers” change from Nov to Dec; Acoustic Americana Music Guide, Nov 29-Dec 3, 2012

.
EXTRA!
We've already inserted several "LATE ADDITIONS" (each marked as such) in this edition's chronolgy. But the damn things keep coming, and we don't want you to experience "F.O.M.S."and -- the Fear Of Missing Something. (That malady was first proclaimed by our friend Marilyn Babcock, so we're giving credit where it's due.) Anyway, for the sake of everyone who has been through this edition at least once already, we are adding the following additional "Late Additions" right here, up front:
.
~`~`~`~`~
.
Fri-Sun, Nov 30-Dec 2, in South Pasadena:
8 pm* "THE SNOW QUEEN," world premiere of a new stage musical done in the English Panto Style (aka English Vaudeville) by Dale Sandlin & Steve Apostolina, at Fremont Centre Theatre in South Pasadena.
+
*Runs Fridays & Saturdays at 8 pm, Sundays at 2 pm, Nov 30 through Dec 23. Tix, $25; students & seniors, $20.
+
Presented by Blame the Clown Productions, in association with the Pasadena Arts Council's "Emerge Program," proudly brings this world premiere run.
+
"The Snow Queen" follows the misadventures of Widow Twanky and her charges, Kai and Gerda, as they battle the evil Snow Queen and the rather bumbling forces of darkness.
+
Loosely based on the fairy tale of the same name by Hans Christian Andersen, it is a tale of old love, new love, lost love, found love, devils, reindeer, magic mirrors, and snowballs. The theatre calls it, a "hilarious evening of holiday fun and live music for ages 6 to 96."
+
About the style: English Panto takes familiar fairy tales and children's stories and injects a bit of music hall (British Vaudeville) sensibility, contemporary references, and audience participation, all to create a raucous, noisy entertainment that's fun for everyone in the family.

7:15 pm "A SEASON OF GIVING" presented by "We Tell Stories," features myths, folktales, and literature for the holiday season, at the Library Community Room, 1115 El Centro St, South Pasadena.

+
Free.

Now, here's the rest of the entire current and VERY full edition (as originally published, plus those earlier inserted late additions):
.
~`~`~`~`~`~`~`~`~`~`~
.
It’s that time of year, when we must cease and desist (for ten months, anyway) from using that delightful old STAN LAUREL (Laurel & Hardy) recitation of autumn’s calendar: “Septober, Octember, Nowonder…”
+
Yep, on to December -- and its load of observances and holidays and implied obligations to spend money on things of dubious value to the recipients. This edition includes the first weekend of December and some nice seasonal events for the cynical and non-cynics alike.

A common thread runs from Dubrovnik to Vukovar, passing through Belgrade, touching lightly in Tirana and Athens. It's a thread flowing through the sea, touching Brindisi and passing through the Mediterranean, skimming the Andalusia coast. The thread becomes the strngs of guitars and violin chords, rebounding on leather drums, curving on the accordion keys. The lopps and secured Knots of these connections are manifest in Taluna, a band formed by four musicians with different roots and backgrounds, moving their first steps in 2008 in Turin (Italy); an immigrant’s city become a meltin'pot of Central Europe and North Africa cultures.
+
GAIA MOBILIJ Calabrian lyre and accordion, MARCO GHEZZO violin, LUCA RUSSO acoustic guitar, PEPPINO LEONE percussions and traditional Southern Italian frame drums are the means of this mental, spatial and musical voyage - between gipsy and sephardic sounds, Balcans syncopated rhythms and the obsessed tarantella. Taluna landing place is a personal sound, their show is a revised traditional repertoire of traditional Italian music arranged in a Balkan key. But the real energy comes their songs written personally, in a mix of styles and genres to which Taluna refers to.The voice is the principal element around that the percussion exprime with the beats balkanic and the violin and guitar approach different languages of improvisation. Refined music and irresistible for the dance.

From award-winning director STEVE JAMES (Hoop Dreams) and best-selling author ALEX KOTLOWITZ, “The Interrupters” is a moving documentary that follows three “violence interrupters” who work to protect their Chicago communities from the violence they once employed themselves.

The film is an intimate journey into the persistence of violence in our cities and captures a period when Chicago became a national symbol for urban violence. Critically acclaimed director and USC School of Cinematic Arts alum John Singleton (Boyz N the Hood) will introduce the film. Following the screening, USC School of Cinematic Arts Vice Dean MICHAEL RENOV will moderate a fascinating conversation with two of the subjects of the film, violence interrupters EDDIE BOCANEGRA and AMEENA MATTHEWS, along with filmmaker STEVE JAMES. RSVP online right away, as this may reach capacity.

PATRICK SAUBER....banjo, mandolin, vocals....and BILL BRYSON, upright bass, vocals.
+

For such a young player, it will be interesting to see where he carries this talent. He also sings all the needed parts in the good trio and quartet numbers.
+
BILL BRYSON comes from a long discography of bluegrass and country music. One of the most skilled of the upright bass players in the business, he's been with such great groups as: The Bluegrass Cardinals, The Country Gazette, The Laurel Canyon Ramblers, The Desert Rose Band, and Bluegrass Etc. +
Reclusive roots rocker Jerry Riopelle arrives with special guest Ruthann Friedman (who wrote the iconic pop classic “Windy”).
+
There's no mistaking Jerry Riopelle's distinctive brand of hard driving roots rock. Riopelle's music reflects a genuine lyrical honesty with heavy doses of rhythm & blues, rock, and country, flavored with a unique mix of jazz and reggae. He's an artist whose work, both in the studio and on stage, has refused to be categorized. His career has included a stint as drummer for the Hollywood Argyles, as well as writing and producing for We Five, Brewer & Shipley, The Parade, Shango, and many others. His songs have been covered by numerous artists including Herb Alpert, Joan Baez, Leon Russell, Kenny Loggins, Rita Coolidge and Meat Loaf. Jerry's natural ability to draw from different contemporary styles while utilizing wide ranging instrumental ideas and rhythmic variations gives the Riopelle sound a very distinct character. The show will be opened by folk-pop icon Ruthann Friedman, who's best known as the composer or "Windy," and who has delighted more than a few audiences since resurfacing a few years ago.

Sat, Dec 1, in Santa Monica:
2:30-4:30 pm “‘TWAS THE NIGHT BEFORE HANUKKAH: THE MUSICAL BATTLE BETWEEN CHRISTMAS AND THE FESTIVAL OF LIGHTS at Santa Monica Museum of Art’s “Holiday Shop” celebration, presented by “THE IDELSOHN SOCIETY FOR MUSICAL PRESERVATION,” at Santa Monica Museum of Art’s Bergamot Station Cultural Arts Center, Bldg G-1, 2525 Michigan Av, Santa Monica 90404.
+
JOSH KUN and members of The Idelsohn Society will be on hand to sign the Society’s newest project, their 2-CD and digital release exploring the evolving musical role of both Hanukkah and Christmas music in the 20 th Century. The Idelsohn Society for Musical Preservation is a critically acclaimed nonprofit dedicated to Jewish history and music. The Society was co-founded by JOSH KUN, writer, curator, and professor in the USC Annenberg School for Communication & Journalism, and Resident Collector at Santa Monica Museum of Art.
+
“Oy vey! The battle between Christmas and Hanukkah rages on,” says the promo. As you listen to some of the most iconic holiday tunes, Christmas jingles and Hanukkah songs alike, you’ll learn the economic and cultural aspects. Like why the commercialization of Christmas led to a competitive campaign to beef-up Hanukka,h and how that once obscure, minor Jewish holiday grew rapidly in importance. Christmas has one day of presents, but Hanukkah is celebrated for eight glorious nights. Christmas overwhelmed the American psyche, and for reasons of moneymaking, sentimentality, or a simple love of the music, almost every major Jewish performer cut a Christmas track. The result was a truly American phenomenon: a category of Christmas music, as sung by Jews, became a vital part of the holiday tradition.

Sat, Dec 1, in San Pedro:
5:30-9 pm “HOLIDAY RECEPTION ABOARD THE BATTLESHIP IOWA” docked at 250 S Harbor Bl, San Pedro 90731; 877-446-9261.
+
The BATTLESHIP IOWA recently welcomed its 100,000th visitor aboard ship at her berth in San Pedro. That’s quite a milestone, since she just opened there in July as a floating museum.
+
The USS IOWA will present Holiday Music and the best view of the L.A. Harbor’s Holiday Boat Parade.
+
Along with being one of the key vessels that helped the Allies win World War II, the USS IOWA is the only battleship with a bathtub. That was to accommodate President Franklin Roosevelt, who needed it for water therapy in his battle with the effects of polio. When you go aboard, in addition to exploring the bridge and marveling at the nine giant guns that each fired a projectile sixteen inches in diameter, you can, indeed, see the tub and say “FDR soaked here” on his trip to the Yalta Conference in 1945.
+
The Iowa is steadily opening more spaces to visitors, and there’s a four-year plan to create four separate tours.
+
Already, the IOWA is a participant in local community events. For the month of October, they sold special tickets to board the ship, with $3 of each ticket donated to the Susan G. Komen foundation. On Saturday, November 10th, the USS IOWA hosted the “Veteran's Appreciation Day Festival,” with presentations by L.A. Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa, Councilman Joe Buscaino, and over 50 local Veterans groups. If you’ve seen any of the four billboards displayed near the surrounding freeways and advertising the ship’s museum tours, they were donated by Bulletin Displays, a local billboard firm, and the IOWA’s crew thanks them and all the others in Southern California who have lent their support. Another contribution that went unheralded on opening day was the flyover of World War II era aircraft from the Planes of Fame museum in Chino. With aircraft fuel costing much more than what you put in your tank, the flight was an expensive three-minute gift to the ship!
+
Anything you contribute to the IOWA is tax-deductible, because its operators / curators are the Pacific Battleship Center, a 501(c)3 nonprofit. Sign-up for their free newsletter to keep up with their events at www.pacificbattleship.com. You can tour the ship, 7 days a week, except Christmas Day.

"Epic brilliance. Masterful and expansive writing from one of the bravest purveyors of narrative songwriting... His dexterity with fiction has led to some of the most inventive and poignant songs around; the unbound capacity of his imagination is always matched with a tender, human poignancy, and it's in that place, the intersection of boundless imagination and tenderness, that these songs of Robert Morgan Fisher's live. In a time when many artists deliver precious little, he brings more than you'd ever imagine. And then some." -- American Songwriter Magazine.
+
(5 stars) "ROBERT MORGAN FISHER is truly one of the best Roots / Americana songwriters to place a pen on paper. His songs have a realness that reaches the inner soul of the listener. Very few songwriters have this ability and even less can bring forth the dynamic vocal expressions to deliver songs as these and give them life with such conviction." -- Robert Bartosh / Roots Music Report.

7:30 pm “TRIPPIN’ THE 60’s,” with BARRY McGUIRE and JOHN YORK, play the Gelencser House Concert Series in Claremont.
+
Barry McGuire stepped into the public eye in 1963 on the Andy Williams Show as the gravelly voiced lead singer of the New Christy Minstrels. He launched his musical career with the million-sellers "Green, Green" and "Green Back Dollar."
+
In 1965, at the heart of the peace movement, McGuire went solo. His growing awareness of social hypocrisy was expressed in his third hit "Eve of Destruction" which echoed around the world as an anthem of the times. Three years later, Barry was cast as the male lead in the original Broadway production of the musical "Hair." Once again his voice was heard proclaiming the ideals of a radical generation. Dick Clark says, “When world events collide with “Rock&Roll” you get Barry McGuire”. Just got a big award at Far West for his gigantic show of music and wit.
+
Currently working with Barry McGuire in "Trippin' The Sixties," John York is best known for his work as a member of the world-renowned Folk Rock/Country Rock group, the Byrds. His vocal and instrumental talents have kept him in the company of such musical luminaries as Roger McGuinn, Gene Clark, Clarence White, Nicky Hopkins, Mac Rebenack (Dr. John, ) Doug Sahm (The Sir Douglas Quintet, ) The Mamas and Papas, Johnny Rivers, Lightnin’ Hopkins, Rick Danko and Richard Manuel (The Band)……and many others. The TV show “The Place Where I Am Dreaming” featured John’s artistic collaboration with his wife, artist Sumi Foley. Recently, John has composed and recorded music for the lyrics of Kim Fowley on "West Coast Revelation." The duet "Redneck Ninja" highlights John's creative partnership with acclaimed songwriter Patrick Brayer. In 2007, John played concerts in Japan for the third time.

GEORGE COLE and EUROCANA are a national touring act based out of the SF Bay Area. “Eurocana” is the name of the band, and it describes a music genre: it's 21st century Tin Pan Alley with a hat-tip to Django Reinhardt and Stephane Grappelli.

+
STEPHAN DUDASH, from Nashville, is acclaimed as “America's Swing Violinist.” He's toured with Olivia Newton-John, and performed on the Tonight Show with both Shania Twain and David Lee Roth. Parisian guitarist MATHIAS MINQUET has an impeccable, intuitive musical gift. As a performer, his irresistible French charm and undeniable skill make the crowd beg for more. Sat, Dec 1, at UCLA:
8 pm World-renowned quartet ANONYMOUS 4 performs the West Coast premiere of “LOVE FAIL,” a unique new vocal work from Pulitzer Prize-winning composer DAVID LANG, written specifically for ANONYMOUS 4; presented by the “CENTER FOR THE ART OF PERFORMANCE” series -- the new name for the former UCLA LIVE! series -- in Royce Hall, 340 Royce Dr, on the UCLA campus at Royce Dr between Westwood Bl and Hilgard Av, Westwood; UCLA ticket office, 310-825-2101 or www.cap.ucla.edu.
+
The all-new work is inspired by the tragic and oft-retold tale of Tristan and Isolde. Lang scoured literature and extracted anecdotes from several versions. The 12-song cycle includes all new music composed by Lang, who has written lyrics based on works from Gottfried von Strassburg, Marie de France, Contessa de Dia and Richard Wagner. Several songs feature lyrics drawn directly from works of Sir Thomas Malory and contemporary author Lydia Davis.
+
“I compiled the oddest incidents from different versions of the Tristan and Isolde story, took out all the names or technological information that would make these texts seem ancient, and put them next to stories by Lydia Davis,” Lang says of the libretto. “These stories are oddly similar to the Tristan stories -- they are also about love, honor and respect between two people, but they are much more recognizable to us.”
+

For such a young player, it will be interesting to see where he carries this talent. He also sings all the needed parts in the good trio and quartet numbers.

One of the most skilled of the upright bass players in the business, he's been with such great groups as: The Bluegrass Cardinals, The Country Gazette, The Laurel Canyon Ramblers, The Desert Rose Band, and Bluegrass Etc. +
The beguiling JILL SOBULE arrives for a solo show, and McCabe’s has added the lovely and talented Z BERG of THE LIKE (who was last at McCabe's as the featured vocalist on VAL McCALLUM's solo show in June).
+
Sobule delivers music that is at once deeply personal and socially conscious, seriously funny and derisively tragic. Breaking out in 1995 with her crossover hit "I Kissed A Girl," Jill has, over five albums and a decade of recording, tackled such topics as the death penalty, anorexia, shoplifting, reproduction, the French resistance movement, adolescence, and the Christian right. And there’s Love, found, lost, wished-for and taken-away. In the words of New York Times pop music critic Jon Pareles, "Sobule can claim her place among the stellar New York singer-songwriters of the last decade. Topical, funny and more than a little poignant ... grown-up music for an adolescent age."
+
Having just added songstress Z. BERG makes this a very strong double bill for folks who like it on the pop side.

He wrote the title track for his late friend, BOON MILLER, an artist and musician who co-wrote "Triple Jack," on the "Bring on The Blues" CD with Stevens. The disc itself features Miller's visual art. Stevens remembers, "I wrote ‘The Dreaming Man’ the day Boon died. It was a weird situation. He died of complications from diabetes. He knew he was going to die. We all knew. I talked to him on the phone the day before he died and we had a great conversation. We talked about the music he loved, like Hendrix. But it was eerie, even though he was upbeat. The next day he was gone and the song wrote itself." Stevens continues to tour with his band and as a solo acoustic performer. His music is played on XM Radio and some FM stations, and is available on iTunes, CD Baby, and in selected stores.

Sun, Dec 2, in SFV:
4-7:30 pm 31st Annual “LOS ANGELES HOLIDAY CAROLING FESTIVITIES” include many music luminaries, and invite YOU to take part. Activities are very structured and scheduled at five senior care centers with performances from 4 to 7:30 pm.
+
It’s a “modular schedule” that allows you to “arrive / depart at your discretion.” All venues are located close together in the West San Fernando Valley area of Los Angeles, and this event is part of “a nationwide initiative to promote the overall theme of brining happiness and / or enlightenment to the elderly, care-givers, and participants during the holiday season,” says series founder VINCENT LEINEN.
+
Immediately following the caroling, participants are invited to socialize and dine at HomeTown Buffet Restaurant in Canoga Park, from 7:30-9:30 pm.
+
Vincent says, “The holiday season can be a very challenging time for our friends in senior care centers. Statistics show that, while for many people it’s the most enjoyable time of year, this can be the opposite for seniors residing in care centers because they long to be at their own home and suffer from blues, depression, and even commit suicide. The music, love, compassion, and energy provided by the participants can provide our senior friends much needed mental and spiritual healing power and growth to address this situation.”

JIM LAUDERDALE is a GRAMMY-Award winning musician, singer and songwriter is one of the most respected artists working the bluegrass, country and Americana music communities today. He has sung, played and toured with many celebrated musicians, including ELVIS COSTELLO, LUCINDA WILLIAMS, and GEORGE JONES.
+
Lauderdale remains one of Nashville's “A-List” songwriters, while continuously touring in support of his critically-acclaimed solo records. These include his new, and 20th(!), studio album, “Carolina Moonrise.” Lauderdale has collaborated with legendary artists like RALPH STANLEY and his contemporaries, most recently teaming up with BUDDY MILLER for both a country duets album titled “Buddy & Jim” and as co-host of “The Buddy & Jim Show,” which airs on SiriusXM Outlaw Country. In addition to several Grammy Awards, Lauderdale has been recognized by the Americana Music Association both as “Artist of the Year” and for his songwriting during the organization's celebrated annual awards show, which he has hosted the last ten years.
+
Lauderdale has had an unconventional and prolific career. So much so that he’s the subject of a new feature length documentary, “THE KING OF BROKEN HEARTS,” directed by Australian filmmaker JEREMY DYLAN. The film tells Lauderdale's story from his North Carolina roots, being immersed in the country music scenes in both New York City and Los Angeles, to breaking through in Nashville as a songwriter and writing hits for a slew of artists including GEORGE STRAIT, GARY ALLAN, THE DIXIE CHICKS, VINCE GILL, and PATTY LOVELESS. Catch his full concert tonight, and see him again on Dec 11 at the Grammy Museum when the film is screened and Lauderdale will do a Q&A and play a few tunes. Either event represents a rare opportunity to catch him performing in L.A. Both together, within a few days, is almost more than his fans can handle. Get tix promptly.

+
GEORGE COLE and EUROCANA are a national touring act based out of the SF Bay Area. Bob Stane says, “You’ll hear them perform new songs and favorites, with a few holiday classics, all delivered in a ‘hot’ style that will leave your ears smiling and your toes tapping. Everyone loves a good song, we crave stories told well. Virtuoso guitarist, vocalist, composer, and lyricist GEORGE COLE's mission is to write another chapter to the Great American Songbook. His music group, EUROCANA, swings with energy and life delivering all original music with vocal harmonies and world-class musicianship.”

Johnson, special to The Detroit News.

Dec 2, in Los Osos:
Time tba MOLLY'S REVENGE with guest vocalist CHRISTA BURCH, and the award-winning ROSEMARY TURCO IRISH STEP DANCERS, deliver an evening of music, song and dance for the festive season. This Los Osos show is as close as they’ll get to Southern Cal on their ten-date, three-state Christmas show tour. Tix, location, and more info at www.Mollysrevenge.com and www.davidbrewermusic.com.
+
The performance includes Christmas songs old and new from many lands, all played with a Celtic 'Mollified' twist. You'll have an opportunity to join-in and sing some of your favorite carols, and the band's dancing guests will set your toes tapping.
+
The band’s piper, DAVID BREWER, who has been commuting from the East Coast, will be relocating to the Highlands of Scotland after completing this Molly's Revenge Christmas tour. David will “connect with counterparts of the music, and learn multitudes of new tunes and songs, all the while getting submerged in the Gaelic culture.” David will rejoin Molly's Revenge for their summer tour in 2013. While David's away, John and Stu will stay busy touring with their various side projects, which include the bands LITTLE BLACK TRAIN and STORY ROAD. But if you want to enjoy MOLLY’S REVENGE live anytime soon, make this trek to Los Osos.

LOTS MORE COMING UP… ONE THING WON’T WAIT…

NEWS ITEM and INVITATION to take part…
.
+
Here’s a sample of the celebrity musician lineup (the folks you’ll sing and / or perform with; there’s a more complete list on the event’s website): CARL VERHEYEN, world-acclaimed guitarist of SUPERTRAMP; ALAN O’DAY, pop singer who recorded the #1 hit “Undercover Angel;” CHRIS ROSS, big-time drummer who performed and / or recorded with many top artist, including KENNY LOGGINS, JOE COCKER, LISA HALEY, and THREE DOG NIGHT; ALEX DEL ZOPPO & FRED HERRERA, band members of SWEETWATER, the band that opened the original Woodstock, and subject of the VH1 movie “Sweetwater: A True Rock Story;” DON PEAK, Musicians Hall of Fame member, guitarist with MARVIN GAYE, EVERLY BROTHERS, RAY CHARLES, JACKSON 5; KEVIN JONES, keyboard player for OZZY OSBOURNE; LISA HALEY, fiddle player and 2008 Grammy nominee in the “Best Zydeco or Cajun Album” category, and she’s performed with BRIAN SETZER, RANDY NEWMAN, and LYLE LOVETT; MIKE PINERA, guitarist for legendary rock groups ALICE COOPER BAND (“Schools Out,” “I’m Eighteen”), BLUES IMAGE (“Ride Captain Ride,” “Pay”), IRON BUTTERFLY (“In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida”); PATRICK WASKIELIS, drummer for HAMILTON, JOE FRANK & REYNOLDS, which performed Billboard #1 single “Fallin’ In Love;” PRESCOTT NILES, bassist of THE KNACK, performed #1 hit “My Sharona.”
+
Plus, there are non-musicians who lend their voices, including ERIC GARCETTI, Member of the Los Angeles City Council representing the 13th District, served as Council President from 2006 to 2012; TREY CARLISLE, actor who portrays “Earl Jr.,” Earl’s younger son on TV’s “My Name is Earl.”
+
Contact Vincent ASAP, and if pertinent, provide authorization to use your name on the invitation, website, press release etc. Disregard that if your status and / or authorization is confirmed.
