Annual "PUT THE FORK IN HUNGER FOOD DRIVE," supported by artists and plenty of others, is Sunday, Nov 11, 8 am to 4 pm, at "Fork Plaza."

That's the home of the world-famous "Fork-in-the-Road" sculpture. Drop off canned or packaged food that does not require refrigeration. Volunteers will meet you at curbside.

It's at 200 Bellfontaine, Pasadena 91105, at the top of the triangular park where Pasadena Av and St. John's Place divide at, you guessed it, the fork in the road.

If you haven't seen the gigantic piece of tableware -- the fork -- you must go. Parking is convenient and free to allow photo ops as you embrace the giant fork and get that picture for your special holiday card to send your Back-East relatives.

Just take food for those in need. Last year set an all-time record with FIVE TONS of food collected. The need remains strong, so organizers pledge a higher total this year.

The 31st Annual “LOS ANGELES HOLIDAY CAROLING FESTIVITIES” include many music luminaries, and invite YOU to take part, Sunday, December 2, 2012. Activities are very structured and scheduled at five senior care centers with performances from 4 to 7:30 pm.
It’s a “modular schedule” that allows you to “arrive / depart at your discretion.” All venues are located in the West San Fernando Valley area of Los Angeles, and this event is part of “a nationwide initiative to promote the overall theme of brining happiness and / or enlightenment to the elderly, care-givers, and participants during the holiday season,” says series fouinder VINCENT LEINEN.

Immediately following the caroling, participants are invited to socialize and dine at HomeTown Buffet Restaurant in Canoga Park, from 7:30-9:30 pm.

Vincent says, “The holiday season can be a very challenging time for our friends in senior care centers. Statistics show that, while for many people it’s the most enjoyable time of year, this can be the opposite for seniors residing in care centers because they long to be at their own home and suffer from blues, depression, and even commit suicide. The music, love, compassion, and energy provided by the participants can provide our senior friends much needed mental and spiritual healing power and growth to address this situation.”

ED PEARL says, "This event is designed to introduce the public to an ongoing oral history project focused on recovering the vibrant world that the Ash Grove was a part of, and which the club helped bring into existence."

He continues, "The project has collected interviews not only with musicians and those who helped run the Ash Grove, but also from those who attended the club and were deeply moved by the experience. While its most pivotal years saw the club become a center for the 1960s counterculture in Los Angeles, this club continues to live and inspire people whose social, musical and political sensibilities were formed in part within its walls."

The interviews will be collected along with the rest of the Ash Grove archive at the Ethnomusicology Library at UCLA,though the work is far from over. If you have a memory of the club, please consider attending this event,and also adding your memories to the project.

HAPPY VETERANS DAY. We, together with the entire nation, take just one day to year to honor our veterans, who have often given the best years of their lives in service to our nation. The day -- November 11 -- derives from Armistice Day that ended World War I. Alas, the final veterans of that war are now all gone, and the "war to end all wars" that they fought did not then and still has not now, brought that hope to reality. But despite the lunacy of war, we honor those who have stepped forward to protect us and assure our freedoms -- including the freedom to oppose war.

TOM RENAUD is a contemporary folk singer and guitarist, playing music that uplifts spirits. He was a monk for 25 years, living in Colorado, Nova Scotia, and Ireland. All the while he worked on the guitar and wrote songs. In 2005 Tom left the monastery and now teaches -- but music continues to be his favorite work. He has recorded with folk duo Evans & Doherty, receiving national airplay in Canada, and was a finalist in the 2007 Great American Song Contest for "Ripened Fields of Corn." With his songs, presence, and personality the audience is engaged by a sense of open-heartedness, woven through with poetic stories. Tom's guitar playing never fails to impress.
