Saturday, November 24, Acoustic Americana Music Guide 2012

.
Okay, here’s Part One of the weekend. More later.
.
By now, you have done your part for gluttony and for capitalism. Time to support your local musician. Or a touring musician. Or band. If you have out-of-town guests, why not take them to one of our fabulous live music venues? They probably have nothing like that at home. You’ll get bragging rights and their gratitude, they’ll have golden memories of the Golden State. Win-win. There are even some nifty FREE events in this edition. Still, if you’re just too broke to go anywhere, or you drew short straw to stay home with the littlest kids or the crotchety great-uncle, the music-on-TV listings are here, too. Enjoy!

Sat, Nov 24, in Altadena, a “SHOW-of-the-WEEK” pick:
7 pm THE DUO TONES, the veteran rock-instrumental masters PAUL JOHNSON & GIL ORR, at the Coffee Gallery Backstage, 2029 N Lake Av, Altadena 91001; reservations 626-798-6236 (10 am-10 pm); venue phone 626-398-7917; info www.coffeegallery.com. (“The venue named by the Guide's editor, writing in FolkWorks, as L.A.’s best intimate acoustic listening room venue”).
+
These two have hit upon a unique and winning idea: by leaving out the drums and bass, they put the focus on their delightful dual-guitar interplay, both acoustic and electric, bringing fresh appeal to the surf-instro genre and as much as anyone out there, causing folk-Americana to embrace the genre. Paul co-founded the pioneer '60s surf band, the Belairs (knbown for "Mr. Moto"); he currently plays with the Surfaris (known for "Wipeout"). Gil has been with the Chantays (known for "Pipeline") since the '60s.
+
With two CDs selling well and a growing visibility that includes being a big hit on "A Prairie Home Companion" within the past couple of years, the Duo-tones are creating a stir among many music fans who are discovering, often for the first time, just how rich this stuff can be when played with the skill and authority that Paul and Gil bring to it.
+
"THE DUO-TONES are the rare example of the creators of a genre remaining vital and continuing to contribute to its growth... (they) have taken a huge step in making surf music palatable to a wider audience." — New Gandy Dancer magazine (UK).
+
Paul Johnson helped pioneer instro-surf music in the early ‘60s with his band, the Belairs; their recording of his tune, "Mr. Moto, " is a genre classic. Paul's innovative style led to many studio credits, and his prolific output of original tunes and creative ideas established him as one of the genre's leading lights. His tunes, performances and recordings continue to epitomize the form to this day. He has been highly visible with the Surfaris since 1990.
+
Gil Orr was a child prodigy in the early ‘50s, playing country music on a number of radio and TV shows. In the '60s he moved on to rock ‘n roll and joined the Chantays, with whom he continues to play to this day. He also enjoys an active career playing with a number of bands in many styles.
+
Tix, $18.

LATE ADDITION:
Sat, Nov 24, in Palmdale:
7 pm Canadian songbird DANIELLE HEBERT, plus an opening set by WAYNE SLATER-LUNSFORD, at Butler's Coffee in Palmdale.
+
Host of Butler's regular Open Mics, DesertSong's own WAYNE SLATER-LUNSFORD, a dude with an encyclopedic knowledge of folk music, a distinctly idiosyncratic way with a song, and the unique gift of being able to personalize everything he plays, leads off on some wonderful tangents and unexpected musical asides to open. If he can't play it, it just might not exist.
+
And then DANIELLE HÉBERT will take the stage. Danielle hails from Québec and Vancouver and a million other places and faces in between, and definitely goes her own way. Musician, artist, poet, motorcycle mama and flower child, equally at home in French or English, she's at turns mysterious, generous, passionate and brave, her music an intense, compelling and rich sonic kaleidoscope of folk, jazz and prog rock that can coo seductively or crunch with sensual swagger; a highway child running wild, accompanied tonight by her friend Forrest.
+
No cover. Arrive early for a seat and for time to order treats or beverages for the show.

+
Last year, with the help and remarkable generosity of local musicians and music fans acting together as "our friends" at the Cowboy Palace, 73 bikes were donated to this wonderful cause. With the need even greater, organizers are determined to make this year’s effort bigger and better, with a goal of 100 bikes. You can donate a bike or $50, the cost of a bike, or whatever you can afford. Come help celebrate this wonderful event at the Palace
+
The Doo Wah Riders tell us:
“Thanks to all of you who helped make last Christmas Special for some deserving children. We are once again partnering with the San Bernardino County Fair and the BEARS (Benefit Everyone, Assist Recreation & Sports) for the Doris Davies Memorial Bike Drive. It's been two years since Doris passed away. It has taken an army of us to do the work she did by herself! PLEASE help us to make this year's bike drive even bigger than last year.
+
The Cowboy Palace and the DOO-WAH RIDERS are dedicating TWO nights this year: Friday, November 23rd and Saturday, November 24th at the Cowboy Palace, 9 pm.
+
You can either bring a BASIC boy's or girl's bicycle with you (approx. $50 at K-Mart, Wal-Mart, etc.) or give a $50 donation. The band says, “Last year, with your help, we were able to donate 105 bicycles. Our goal for this year is to do at least as well as we did last year but more would be better. PLEASE help us reach this goal.”
+
If you can't attend, you can still donate. Make your check payable to BEARS, and mail to The Doo-Wah Riders, 4640 Vantage Av, Valley Village, CA 91607
