Monday & Tuesday Music, Nov 5 & 6, 2012

.
Yes, Virginia, there are live performances Monday night, AND on Election Day, and there’s music on TV. If you just can’t take the excruciating nail-biting of waiting for Ohio and Nevada and the awkward counts from states hit by Hurricane Sandy, there is respite within.
.
BUT… Whatever else you do or do not do, VOTE. You must.
.
In addition to picking a president, there’s the little matter of determining what kind of society we will have. There are plenty of additional and important offices being contested, and there are major ballot measures at stake. Besides, your vote is your license to bitch.
.
Just think of the centuries when non-landowners, and when people of color, and when women, and when Native American Indians, and when people just old enough to die in wars as members of the military at age 18, were all denied the right to vote. Think of the voter suppression efforts evident in battleground states in this election. Think of the people who endured Hurricane Sandy who are busting their asses to get to a polling place surrounded by wreckage and powered by a generator. Think of the TV footage of people standing in line for six and eight hours and more, just to vote. And think how easy you probably have it to get to your local polling place. In summation, as Rachel Maddow puts it, “Nobody can make you vote, but if you don’t, you are fulfilling someone else’s agenda.”
.
Go spend some time decompressing with live music Monday night, and do more of that Tuesday night. But GO VOTE Tuesday. Nothing depends on you doing that -- except the future OF the future: what it will look like; what the substance of it will be; how people will be treated and valued and what kind of opportunities they will have; what kind of world we will leave the next generation; and how history will judge the way we spent our time on this planet.

I am thankful there is music tonight. I need to go out. Can't take the idea of going home and watching votes come in. Will clubs be crowded? I bet yes. Be fun to see.
