Acoustic Americana Music Guide – September early edition, 2009

.
This is the last edition of the Guide for a while, until our editor recovers from eye surgery. (He goes in for that right after this edition is published.) What’s here extensively covers the first week of September, PLUS there’s a full feature on the upcoming MILLPOND MUSIC FESTIVAL, which will be held later in the month. If you still need events for August 31, they are at http://acousticamericana.blogspot.com/2009/08/aug-31-events-only-acoustic-americana.html
+
No sooner did the editor return from the High Sierra, having weathered a storm at high altitude and encountered other surprises, then an even bigger surprise arrived: emergency eye surgery. So, the HUNDREDS of emails that arrived in his absence must await, along with whatever piles-up while he can’t see. (There were already over a thousand, actually. Do the math: average of 3 minutes per message = 50 hours to get through them all. Your patience is appreciated.)

You’ve gotta be kidding. Labor Day is this weekend? Summer ends this month? Gads. Whether you’ve been anywhere or not, at least the acoustic music scene continues unabated. And there IS the wonderful “MILLPOND MUSIC FESTIVAL” (the 18th annual), just north of Bishop, September 18-20, and that offers a celebratory last hurrah. (It’s an “EVENT-OF-THE-MONTH” pick, with all you need to know about it, at the end of the week’s listings.) That, and all else that’s happening, hither and yon, is here for you.

.
WHY SEPTEMBER IS SEPTEMBER
.
The name of the month comes from the Latin Septem, meaning seven. September was the seventh month of the Roman calendar until 47 BC, when Julius Caesar revised the calendar.
.
=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=
=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=
.
Our “Poem-of-the-Month” for September:
.
NOW

Close the barbecue
Close the sun
Close the home run games we won.

Close the picnic
Close the pool.

Close the summer.

Open school.

- Prince Redcloud
.
.
Or perhaps you’ll appreciate this fragmenn of lyrics, from John Denver’s “Season Suite:”

It seems a shame to see September
Swallowed by the wind.
And more than that, it’s oh so sad
To see the summer end.
And though the changing colors are a lovely thing to see
If it were mine to make the change
I think I’d let it be.
But I don’t remember hearing anybody asking me.

WELCOME!
Without question, the Los Angeles region now has the greatest number of live acoustic performances of anyplace in America, and possibly in the world. Much of it is simply WONDERFUL, including club and coffeehouse gigs, performing arts center and theater concerts, indoor and outdoor shows, and a steady parade of festivals that include a healthy acoustic music presence. In addition, for those planning travel and our readers elsewhere, the Guide always includes a vast variety of acoustic music festivals all over the planet. And unique to the Guide, descriptions are included in our extensive listings, rather than simple calendar listings where you need to recognize a performer’s name to know the genre of acoustic music. (Lots of places tell you who, where, and when. We tell you that, plus the all-important “what.”) Yep, we “Guide” you through the live acoustic music scene.
+
RECURRING EVENTS include residencies, series, showcases, and open mics, and all these are numerous in the Southern California acoustic music universe. We generally add them to the Guide’s calendar one week at a time, as dates approach, because there are so many of them AND because it gives us a chance to learn who is playing.
+
RADIO SHOWS that regularly feature live acoustic performances are included, provided there is a way to hear them in Los Angeles. With precious few exceptions, hearing these in L.A. requires internet listening, and we give you the necessary URLs.
+
GETTING YOUR GIG LISTED: We welcome your feedback, and news of your acoustic Americana and acoustic renaissance music shows (send us gig notices in our format, please; see any listed show for an example) please DON’T expect us to re-type info that you have locked into a jpg – send us plain text, so we can work with it! Proprietress Nancy Tessier’s father, Refugio "Coco" Lopez, plays alto, and she wanted her club to feature an array of jazz singers. This led to a fortuitous connection with Dale Boatman, founder and president of the California Jazz Arts Society. CalJAS is a powerful force in bringing some of the best jazz artists in Southern California, especially singers, to restaurants, clubs and other performance spaces in eastern Los Angeles County and the Inland Empire, an area that previously had relatively few opportunities for jazz musicians to perform.

Free entertainment, tips only, in a great place, with nice people and good music. Vin Fiz Flyer tells us, “Old town Glendora is a kinda sleepy small Midwest town plopped into Southern California. These early morning concerts sound like a wacky idea, but they’re well-attended by musicians as well as music lovers! A car club meets at the Cafe next door every Saturday for breakfast, and they park their assorted ‘babies’ out front for you to peruse too. Come on by and start your weekend out right.” Check with venue to see if there is a concert scheduled for today.

3-5 pm (Pacific) “A PRAIRIE HOME COMPANION” always features live performances and skits and stories with host GARRISON KEILLOR, a regular cast of recording artists, and guests, whether broadcasting from various live venues across America, or from its home base in Minnesota. This initial “live” broadcast tiume each weekend is standard everywhere, though repeat times vary by station. In L.A., the show is broadcast on KPCC 89.3 FM, and repeats Saturday night, 6-8 pm and Sunday Noon-2 pm. But if you’re in L.A., it’s much better to find a web simulcast from somewhere; that’s because KPCC has no other music shows and they do not know how to control the levels for music performances, causing frequent peaking and signal cut-out.

Sat, Sep 5; a “SHOW-OF-THE-WEEK” pick:
7 pm ROBBY LONGLEY at the venue named in FolkWorks as L.A.’s best intimate acoustic listening room venue - The Coffee Gallery Backstage, 2029 N Lake Av, Altadena; reservations 626-398-7917; info www.coffeegallery.com. Robby, AKA ROBERT EARL LONGLEY, of New Orleans, is one of the best guitarists in the world, combining instrumental prowess with genuine showmanship that just might be unparalleled. This guy is amazing. He began playing the guitar at age eleven. Self-taught, Robby has appeared across the US in hundreds of high-profile venues. Early in his performing career, he won first place in eight guitar competitions in less than two years. His self-developed fingerstyle technique, performed on a nylon string guitar, won out over some of the top seeded rock guitarists in the world.
+
Robby has performed on TV, on the Jay Leno Show, the Emmy Awards, and syndicated cable TV music programs. He has played for the Spanish Film Society Films Awards Show, and at Christopher Parkening's Master's Class twice, as the selected guest performer. He has shared stages with the California Guitar Trio, Boney James, Michael Franks, Shiela E, Dave Koz, the English Beat, the Motels, Berlin, Acoustic Alchemy, and Steve Lukather. In addition, Robby recently played to a sold-out crowd of 7,500 at the Mandalay Bay in Las Vegas.
+
His original, superbly developed compositions conjure-up the vivid images of Spaghetti Westerns and flamenco dancers and more, to a fiery, provocative brand of classical guitar music rife with tension and release while producing exotic polyrhythms in lightning speeds with runs of melodic sweetness. Venue impresario Bob Stane observes, “all of which adds-up to a high level of consciousness for the audience.” Robby’s live performance is full of fire, fury and bravado with a touch of old-time New Orleans nastiness. But don’t worry, this is no surly guy. His accent on sweet, unforgettable melodies give him the edge that makes his music accessible and recognizable anywhere. A prolific music producer as well, there are nine CDs of original music by Robby Longley / Robert Earl Longley. His tenth and latest CD is pending release and will soon be available for web download. More at www.myspace.com/robertearllongley and www.CDBaby.com. Tix, $15.

Sat, Sep 5; a “SHOW-OF-THE-WEEK” pick:
7:30 pm OLD BLIND DOGS, from Scotland, at Levitt Pavilion for the Performing Arts, MacArthur Park, 2230 W 6th St, downtown L.A.; 213-368-0520; www.levittla.org; concert series, 213-384-5701. They were a delight among the headliners at this year’s Live Oak Music Festival, and this traditional Scottish folk quartet performs an impassioned live show with lots of danceable fun.
+
Soaring fiddle, stirring bagpipes and dynamic percussion fuel the music of these cutting-edge Scottish neo-traditionalists. Highly prized in their native Scotland, they “intoxicate with their wild and energetic songs and tunes.” More at www.oldblinddogs.co.uk and www.myspace.com/oldblinddogs
+
FolkWorks lists this show as a “Pick of the Week,” and writes, “Since forming in the early 1990s, Old Blind Dogs have stood on the cutting edge of Scotland's roots revival. The band has developed its own trademark style with an energetic mix of songs and tunes. Dynamic percussion, polished vocals, soaring fiddle and stirring pipes fuel the delicately-phrased melodies and traditional songs.
+
"’The Old Blind Dogs play with a compelling energy and intoxicating rhythm,’ says The Scotsman, ‘as players and audience seem to share a wild ecstasy of emotion.’ Sixteen years is a long time in the life of any band and most who reach that milestone are content to rest on the tried and true formulas that have worked in the past. Not so for Scotland's Old Blind Dogs whose newly released Four on the Floor takes them bravely in many new directions.” More at www.folkworks.org/content/view/36123/166.

Though we always say “Bring a blanket or lawn chair” to this series, we dare you to sit still. But bring a picnic basket and lawn chairs or a blanket. You can avoid parking hassles by riding the Red Line light rail to MacArthur Park Station and walking the length of the park to the band shell. Free.

8 pm THE AVETT BROTHERS with SALLIE FORD and THE SOUND OUTSIDE at The Orpheum Theatre, 842 S Broadway, L.A.; 213-749-5171; www.laorpheum.com. THE AVETT BROTHERS make a rare Southern Cal appearance. They played in L.A. a couple years back, and return once or twice a year to delight multigenerational audiences. But that first time here, the Charlottesville, Virginia-based band was given crappy sound reinforcement (in a different venue), so they climbed down from the stage and set-up in the middle of the dance floor, truly acoustic. They had the joint jumpin' to their new fangled old-timey string band sound and innovative washboard-derived percussion rig. Highly recommended. More at www.theavettbrothers.com. Tix, $30.

As always, more to come, as we (believe it or not) continue to make updates to all the months of 2009 in the “long look ahead” posts.
+
…So many truly fine shows, so few evenings and weekends to see them. With a new spirit of HOPE in America, why not celebrate by going out for a tunefully good time?

Yes, it’s true -
There are more ACOUSTIC AMERICANA / ACOUSTIC RENAISSANCE music performances EVERY week in the Los Angeles area than the COMBINED TOTAL of ALL OTHER KINDS OF MUSIC!
+
(And that doesn’t even take into account the dozens of electric Americana shows!)
+
If you have trouble believing that assertion, then print this out and see how many pages you’ll need just for the events for the days covered in this edition!
+
Check it yourself: take any edition of the L.A. Times Calendar Section and any edition of the LA Weekly, count-up all the live music shows (you won’t even need to subtract-out the acoustic shows in those two publications, since they hardly list any, anyway) and add them up. THEN, count the number of live acoustic music performances for the same days in the Acoustic Americana Music Guide. We have yet to find a week when the TOTAL of all those other genres of music performances equals the number of live performances of acoustic music in the L.A. area! (Even though you can’t hear the music on the radio here, or read about it in the biggest newspapers, it seems people DO want acoustic music and they will find and support it anyway!
