WELCOME!
Without question, the Los Angeles region now has the greatest number of live acoustic performances of anyplace in America, and possibly in the world. Much of it is simply WONDERFUL, including club and coffeehouse gigs, performing arts center and theater concerts, indoor and outdoor shows, and a steady parade of festivals that include a healthy acoustic music presence. In addition, for those planning travel and our readers elsewhere, the Guide always includes a vast variety of acoustic music festivals all over the planet. And unique to the Guide, descriptions are included in our extensive listings, rather than simple calendar listings where you need to recognize a performer’s name to know the genre of acoustic music. (Lots of places tell you who, where, and when. We tell you that, plus the all-important “what.”) Yep, we “Guide” you through the live acoustic music scene.

RECURRING EVENTS include residencies, series, showcases, and open mics, and all these are numerous in the Southern California acoustic music universe. We generally add them to the Guide’s calendar one week at a time, as dates approach, because there are so many of them AND because it gives us a chance to learn who is playing.

RADIO SHOWS that regularly feature live acoustic performances are included, provided there is a way to hear them in Los Angeles. With precious few exceptions, hearing these in L.A. requires internet listening, and we give you the necessary URLs.

MEIKO (pronounced MEE-ko) is an American singer-songwriter, born and raised in Roberta, Georgia and currently residing in L.A. She independently released a self-titled album in Sep, 2007, and without the help of a record label, her album reached #35 on the iTunes “Top 100 Albums” chart, and was iTunes' #1 “Singer-Songwriter Album” for over a month. Tyrone set a record in 2006 at the National Association for Campus Activities for most college and university bookings from a single showcase in the history of the Convention. Tyrone has admitted in several interviews that he was not inspired to begin songwriting until his move to the Golden State. While attending Hope International University in Southern California, Tyrone joined the band Skypark. In 2000, he launched his solo career, regularly playing acoustic shows in Orange County, where he and a small movement of folk, pop and urban folk artists including Mike Barnet, Danny Vasquez and Jaycob Van Auken formed a loose coalition called True American Records. Tyrone released his new solo album, “Remain,” on January 27, 2009.

TERENCE MARTIN (“Most Wanted” at the Falcon Ridge Folk Festival) was born in London and raised in Los Angeles. Singer-songwriter-poet Terence Martin moved East in 1997 to become part of the flourishing NY acoustic music scene. His musical background includes performing as a double bassist in the Burbank Symphony and in several touring rock bands. Also a published poet, his poetry is included in the anthology, “Four Valley Poets.” Terence recently released his 5th independent CD, Even Trade, on the Good Dog Music label. The new collection of 12 original songs features the artist’s most personal and ambitious work to date, sophisticated and spiritual in tone, with roots in folk, Americana and pop. Seven of the songs were written with long time collaborator, Gregory Hicks. From themes of freedom vs responsibility and revisiting the past, to loves lost and found, the new release joins a finely crafted body of work, rich with poetic imagery and stellar musicianship. Sing Out magazine says: “If you’re a connoisseur of exceptional songwriters, this CD is essential for your collection.” Terence has shared the stage with an impressive line-up of national acts, including Rosanne Cash, Roger McGuinn, Christine Lavin, Dar Williams, and Richie Havens. He’s performed on the Most Wanted Stage at the Falcon Ridge Folk Festival, been a New Folk winner at the NJ Folk Festival, a finalist in the 2006 Mountain Stage New Song Contest, received honorable mention in the Mid Atlantic Song Contest for “East of the River” and performed at the 2006 Boston Folk Festival.

STEVE FORBERT is an American pop music singer-songwriter best known for his song "Romeo's Tune," which reached #11 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. Anointed "the new Dylan" upon his recording debut, the folk-rock singer-songwriter was born in Meridian, MS, in 1955. Forbert debuted in 1978 with “Alive on Arrival,” which earned critical acclaim for its taut, poetic lyrics. The follow-up, 1979's “Jackrabbit Slim” was his most successful outing. He spent much of the ‘80s in Nashville, where he continued honing his songwriting skills and performed regularly throughout the South. In 1988, he signed to Geffen, where the E Street Band's Garry Talent produced his comeback album, “Streets of This Town.” Forbert moved into independent territory for his next albums including “Any Old Time” (a tribute to country music legend Jimmie Rodgers) in 2002 and “Just Like There's Nothin' to It” (a collection of new songs) in 2004. During this period, Forbert released two compilations of rare and unreleased material, “Young, Guitar Days” and “More Young, Guitar Days,” as well as several live recordings. Steve is currently touring and recording new material.

Yes, it’s true -
There are more ACOUSTIC AMERICANA / ACOUSTIC RENAISSANCE music performances EVERY week in the Los Angeles area than the COMBINED TOTAL of ALL OTHER KINDS OF MUSIC!

(And that doesn’t even take into account the dozens of electric Americana shows!)

If you have trouble believing that assertion, then print this out and see how many pages you’ll need just for the events for the days covered in this edition!

Check it yourself: take any edition of the L.A. Times Calendar Section and any edition of the LA Weekly, count-up all the live music shows (you won’t even need to subtract-out the acoustic shows in those two publications, since they hardly list any, anyway) and add them up. THEN, count the number of live acoustic music performances for the same days in the Acoustic Americana Music Guide. We have yet to find a week when the TOTAL of all those other genres of music performances equals the number of live performances of acoustic music in the L.A. area! (Even though you can’t hear the music on the radio here, or read about it in the biggest newspapers, it seems people DO want acoustic music and they will find and support it anyway!
