WELCOME! And after reading this little section of relevant stray facts, if you feel lost or mystified about any of this, write to us at tiedtothetracks@hotmail.com
+
THIS is the place for acoustic music that’s REAL MUSIC, from blues-to-bluegrass-to-borderlands, Cajun-to-cowboy-to-Celtic-to-Cape-Breton-to-Quebecois, new-old-trad-alt-post folk, and the exciting artists of today’s acoustic renaissance! People who love real music tend to love all real music. So, yes, we do include listings for many classical music performances. (When is a fiddle a violin? We’ll leave that to you.)
+
We are, of course, true to the nature of live acoustic music, “keeping it real.” So, if you’re looking for that Britney Lohan sh-thump-thud, revolving-door-rehab, pop-tart-du-jour junk that infests the radio and is recorded one note at a time, you’ll need to look elsewhere.
+
Here you will find news of live performances of acoustic music and musicians, events that we know you’ll enjoy attending. We include festivals everywhere, and provide a comprehensive guide to concerts, club gigs, coffeehouse performances, and more in the Los Angeles region, from Santa Barbara to Orange County. The Guide includes musicians’ workshops, music conferences, seminars, panel discussions, and more.
.
+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+
.
This is the “big half” of what we publish. The ACOUSTIC AMERICANA MUSIC GUIDE and the ACOUSTIC AMERICANA MUSIC NEWS post separately.
+
You will need to use the tabs (at left) for 2008, and specific months, to find anything posted before January 1, 2009.
+
IF YOU USED A SPECIFIC URL to reach this edition of the Guide, and more than a few days have passed since the date it posted, THERE MAY BE A NEWER EDITION. See next line.
+
THE MOST RECENT GUIDE, with its detailed calendar of events, is identifiable by the date it was posted. Use the basic url - http://acousticamericana.blogspot.com - and check the side bar on the left to look for the latest updated editions.
+
FUTURE MONTHS are published separate from the current month. If you’re looking for “long looks ahead,” remember they may get buried under updates to the current month; use the list and tabs to the left for guidance. And we occasionally post a Guide / calendar of “Best-Out-of-Town (Beyond L.A.)” events, for those great festivals and special happenings in other parts of the country, and to help everyone include music with travel plans.
+
THE MOST RECENT NEWS FEATURES, as well as other recent news posts that are often still relevant, are always available at http://acousticamericana.blogspot.com
+
WHAT’S IN THE NEWS THAT WE COVER? Our latest news features always include things of interest to acoustic music fans AND artists (musicians and songwriters). Topics include trends in the industry, radio, internet radio, music conferences, artists who have recently won awards and recognitions, charity benefits, festival lineups and booking information, our picks for on-line music videos, music-related books, things that are fun to know, and more – but NEVER any “who’s-sleeping-with-who” gossip crap. (That’s YOUR business, and it’s not the public’s business just because you work in show biz.) Current and recent news editions are found at http://acousticamericana.blogspot.com. Old archived editions are on the myspace page (www.myspace.com/laacoustic), accessible by using the “View All” and the “older entries” button and scrolling all the way back to when acoustic music happened because dinosaurs got rambunctious.
+
UPDATES TO THE CURRENT MONTH’S GUIDE / CALENDAR are made at least weekly, because MORE acoustic and folk-Americana music events get booked into a vast number of venues, with more added all the time. And, we include events as we learn of them from artists, presenters, venues, festivals, workshop presenters, etc.
+
FUTURE EVENTS are currently posted past mid-2009, and will soon go farther than that.
+
RECURRING EVENTS include residencies, series, showcases, and open mics, and all these are numerous in the Southern California acoustic music universe. We generally add them to the Guide’s calendar one week at a time, as dates approach, because there are so many of them, AND because it gives us a chance to learn who is playing.
+
GETTING YOUR GIG LISTED: We welcome your feedback, and news of your acoustic Americana music shows (send us gig notices in our format, please; see any listed show for an example) please DON’T expect us to re-type info that you have locked into a jpg – send us plain text, so we can work with it! Send to us at tiedtothetracks@hotmail.com.
+
WE’RE ON BLOGSPOT.COM after a long presence on MySpace, because that site now accepts only short posts. The Guide is waaaay too comprehensive to fit anywhere that imposes limitations. We began posting to Blogspot in early 2008.
+
Our MYSPACE PAGE (www.myspace.com/laacoustic) has current news of the syndicated “Tied to the Tracks” radio show, and what’s happening with its TV counterpart. And it’s where you can find archived Acoustic Americana Music News editions published prior to Spring, 2008.
+
PLEASE DO COMMUNICATE WITH US about anything related to the Acoustic Americana Music Guide and / or the Acoustic Americana Music News, at tiedtothetracks@hotmail.com.
+
PLEASE DON’T send us anything through myspace email. It’s esoteric, it cannot be auto-forwarded into a “real” email account, and we just can’t keep up with it. (Myspace “friends” are great, and we DO welcome you there!) But, communicate through email only at the above address. And, yes, we get HUNDREDS of emails every week, so please give us as much advance notice as possible for your event!

It’s an award-winning vocal quartet and a sketch comedy duo sharing the bill, and each will do some different material at each of the two shows.
+
TEN WEST is an award-winning sketch comedy duo of JON MONATERO and STEPHEN SIMON, who appear in shows all across the country, from venues including the Improv to comedy award shows, commercials and the legitimate theatre. Venue impresario Bob Stane has worked with comics for decades, and he says, “Keeping the art of sketch comedy alive, Jon and Stephen will have you in stitches and tears, as they weave their show around your funny bone.”
+
HI-FIDELITY is a vocal quartet who've been very busy. From winning the “Buckeye Invitational” contest - in all three of its categories - to the title of “Far Western District Quartet Champions,” to “National A Cappella Champions,” and most recently the title of “Pan Pacific Champions” - a contest held only every three years on the Pacific Rim - as well as radio and television appearances on “Later” with Carson Daly on NBC, and even an X-Box commercial, their brand of humor and singing is unique. Bob Stane adds, “You never know who's going to show up: it might be the crew of the Starship Enterprise, the Addams Family, or Elvis might be in the building. Hold on to your hats, they're known for pocketing a few collectibles during their show.” $22.50 either show.

+
Here’s a bit from FolkWorks; more at www.folkworks.org/content/view/35836/3176 -
“’Cloudy Day Navigation’ is what they call their new album, and one way or another, each of the dozen tracks on Gráda's latest recording is about traveling, journeys or finding one's way. That's not surprising when you consider that the Irish band spent nearly eight of the last twelve months on the road and with the release of ‘Cloudy Day Navigation,’ their third album on Nashville's Compass Records, the band members look to do the same in the upcoming year.
+
"’We all came to the band with songs we had written or collected since our CD ‘The Landing Step,’ which was completed in 2004,’ explains Andrew Laking, who plays double bass in the five member group. "Over a three year period we rehearsed, recorded and performed all of this material, eventually whittling it down to the twelve tracks that ended up on the final cut." Each band member had equal input into what was finally chosen for the recording, and for the six tracks on the accompanying DVD. Working all that out, Laking pointed out, is sometimes a challenge given the different musical tastes and backgrounds of the group, but that's also a major source of Gráda's distinctive sound.
+
“Laking was born in Wellington, New Zealand, and his background includes playing jazz as well as Irish music, studying guitar making in Canada, and working construction. Flautist Alan Doherty is best known outside Gráda for his work as lead soloist on the soundtrack for the film Lord of the Rings, and comes from Tallaght, just outside Dublin. Lead singer Nicola Joyce, who also plays bodhrán and fiddle, is from Galway in the west of Ireland, while guitarist Gerry Paul was born in Dublin, grew up in New Zealand, and now lives in Galway. Fiddler Colin Farrell grew up in the in the thriving Irish music scene of Manchester, in England, and recorded with the well known band Flook before joining Gráda.”
+
We want to call your attention to something about the series. Rex Mayreis and Nick Smith of the Caltech Folk Music Society are named in FolkWorks among the “Best of 2008 / Top Ten” most underappreciated people of the L.A. acoustic scene.

Saturdays, on web radio:
3-5 pm (Pacific) “A PRAIRIE HOME COMPANION” always features live performances and skits and stories with host GARRISON KEILLOR, a regular cast of recording artists, and guests, whether broadcasting from various live venues across America, or from its home base in Minnesota. This initial “live” broadcast tiume each weekend is standard everywhere, though repeat times vary by station. In L.A., the show is broadcast on KPCC 89.3 FM, and repeats Saturday night, 6-8 pm and Sunday Noon-2 pm. But if you’re in L.A., it’s much better to find a web simulcast from somewhere; that’s because KPCC has no other music shows and they do not know how to control the levels for music performances, causing frequent peaking and signal cut-out.

6 & 8:30 pm BILL “TAPPY” TAPIA performs his “101st BIRTHDAY CELEBRATION & SHOW” at Grand Annex, 434 W Sixth St, San Pedro 90731; Info Event Hotline, 323-547-3482; www.grandvision.org. Celebrate the longevity and legend of Bill Tapia, who, at 101, is the world's oldest performing musician! Bill, who celebrated his 100th birthday with listeners of radio’s “Tied to the Tracks” and a multi-state concert tour, turned 101 on January first of this year, and he wants to share his good fortune with all of his friends and fans. Bill Tapia on ukulele, vocals; Loyal McAvoy on guitar; Jennifer Leitham on bass; Abe Lagrimas, Jr. on drums.
+
Tapia will perform his vocals and on his ukulele for two inspiring back-to-back concerts with some of L.A.'s top jazz musicians and beautiful Hawaiian dancers. A virtuoso musician and thoroughly engaging entertainer on stage, Tapia has been delighting audiences with his jazz chops and sharp wit over the last nine decades. Chances are slim-to-none that you'll find another entertainer anywhere in the world who can introduce a song as "something I learned during World War I" and then jump into his unique version of "Stars and Stripes Forever" which he arranged in 1918 at the age of ten, after hearing John Phillip Souza play it. Listen to samples and learn more about Bill at www.billtapia.com and www.myspace.com/billtapiahawaii
+
Acclaimed as “THE CONCERT OF THE CENTURY!” here’s what the press has been saying:
+
"As delightful as it is surprising... Tapia's 90-year career includes jams with long-gone pioneers of American music, including Louis Armstrong, Billie Holiday and Fats Waller. Tapia takes his rightful place alongside these greats." - BILLBOARD MAGAZINE
+
"...you might (and boy, you'd be wrong) dismiss this as a novelty, considering his age. But Tapia is a master communicator with precision and his own brand of pizzazz." - HONOLULU ADVERTISER
+
" ... musical treasures that document Tapia's importance as an innovator and pioneer in establishing the ukulele.. " - HONOLULU STAR-BULLETIN

Trails & Rails combines two of the most colorful eras of our country's history as the focus of their show - using both traditional and contemporary songs to recreate the lore and the myths of the train and the cowboy. Known for smooth harmonies, the four members of the award-winning group Trails & Rails share their energy, enthusiasm and love for western and train songs. Featuring mandolin and autoharp leads, toe-tappin' banjo and guitar, and standup bass, their songs and stories about cowboys and trains come alive for you as they sing.
+
TRAILS & RAILS features Emmy Award-winning and Topanga Banjo Fiddle Contest-winner and WALT RICHARDS on banjo, guitar and mandolin, and partner PAULA STRONG. The two were the Western Music Association “Duo Harmony Winners” in Albuquerque in 2005. The band is completed with KEN WILCOX on guitar and autoharp and BRUCE HUNTINGTON on standup bass. All four sing lead and harmony, presenting fine opportunities for variety. They’ll acknowledge a shared love for all types of music, and that combines in an eclectic variety of fun, including their original, "Night Train Down The Yellowstone," a Listener Favorite on radio’s “Tied to the Tracks” and voted # 3 in the Top Ten Single Western Releases of 2006 by the Heartland Public Radio Panel. They tell us, “Saddle up and get on board,” which would be an incongruous mixed metaphor if anyone else were performing. Venue impresario Bob Stane says, “This show always sells-out every last seat. We'll let you take your horse on the train.” $15.

The award-winning female vocal harmony masters have performed live opn radio’s “Tied to the Tracks” and won a “Listener Favorite” there. Now, the group’s leader, MOIRA SMILEY, tells us, “VOCO seems to have slipped into the LA Weekly Rock Picks...oh my! Please come out for a beautiful night with us at Spaceland.”
+
Here’s what David Cotner has to say about both acts in the “Picks” section of LA Weekly’s current edition:
“Building on a tradition of American avant-folk with roots stretching back to YaHoWa and Cromagnon and before, Dawn McCarthy, of Oakland, has collaborated with everyone, from Bonnie Prince Billy to Nurse With Wound’s Matt Waldron — not out of some misguided careerist collection of strategies but with an eye toward communion in a music world fraught with cynicism. With a name like ‘Faun Fables,’ one might suspect the music to be inconsequential (or precious, or jocular) twaddle — yet the unassailable tradition of Americana that McCarthy draws from precludes such snark. Naiveté and simplicity notwithstanding, it’s music that’s not so much a fable as it is an ideal and a dream. Also on the bill are Voco, local Appalachia fetishists — where “fetish” means a meaningful totem, not a meaningless burlesque — who’ll present their modern volkish radiance via the inestimable talents of Moira Smiley, Jess Basta, Jessica Catron and Christine Enns on banjo, accordion, harmonies and ‘body percussion.’ Acoustic body music (ABM)? It’s about time!” More at www.myspace.com/vocoinfo. Venue is 21+. Tix $8 advance, $10 day of show.

It’s MARCH!
.
March was the opening month of the Roman calendar, and it was named for Mars - not the planet, but the Roman god of war. Appropriate, really, given the Romans penchant for warfare. March remained the first month of the year until the Julian calendar was adopted in 46 BCE. Uhh, that is except in England and her possessions, where the practice of using March as the opening month of the year lasted until the mid-eighteenth century.

6 pm LUCY KAPLANSKY at the This show will be held at the Grant R. Brimhall Library, 1401 E. Janss Rd, Thousand Oaks 91362. Presented by Bodie House Music, Inc.; more info at www.bodiehouse.com; reservations (recommended) at bodiehouse@aol.com
+
LUCY KAPLANSKY started-out singing in Chicago bars. Then, barely out of high school, she took off for New York City. There she found a fertile community of songwriters and performers - Suzanne Vega, John Gorka, Bill Morrissey, Cliff Eberhardt, and others - where she fit right in. With a beautiful flair for harmony, Lucy was everyone's favorite singing partner, but most often she found herself singing as a duo with Shawn Colvin. People envisioned big things for them; in fact, The New York Times said it was "easy to predict stardom for her." She harmonized on Colvin's Grammy-winning “Steady On,” on Nanci Griffith's “Lone Star State of Mind” and “Little Love Affairs,” and on four of John Gorka's albums. She also landed major film soundtrack credits, singing with Suzanne Vega in “Pretty in Pink” and with Griffith in “The Firm,” and she has several credits for TV commercials. Red House Records released Lucy's debut solo ablum, “The Tide,” in 1994 to rave reviews, and within six months Lucy signed with a major booking agency. Her voice continues to remain in high demand by her peers. She can be heard on additional albums by Bryan Ferry, Nanci Griffith, John Gorka and on the Greg Brown tribute album, “Going Driftless,” featuring Ani Difranco, Iris Dement, Mary Chapin Carpenter, Gillian Welch, Eliza Gilkyson, and others. Lucy teamed with Dar Williams and Richard Shindell to form the supergroup CRY CRY CRY. There will surely be tales from her to update all we think we know about this exciting artist. $15.

Sun, Mar 1:
7 pm CLAUDIA RUSSELL & BRUCE KAPLAN, plus Bay Area singer songwriter KAYE RODDEN opening the show, at the venue named in FolkWorks as L.A.’s best intimate acoustic listening room venue - The Coffee Gallery Backstage, 2029 N Lake Av, Altadena; info www.coffeegallery.com; reservations 626-398-7917. Claudia has been here at least four times, and performed live on radio’s “Tied to the Tracks.” Venue impresario Bob Stane says, " Why do we ask Berkeley-based Claudia Russell and her band [to come] back not just once, but twice each year? Absolutely one of my faves. She gets it done. Great voice, wonderful songs, funny and active. A triple threat act. Always plays to a full house.”
+
Claudia is a soulful singer and talented songwriter (think Dolly Parton meets Aretha Franklin) who weaves folk, blues, rock, country and traditional music into an eclectic sound that is all her own. She is a two-time Kerrville Folk Festival New Folk finalist and was named by Boston Folk Radio station WUMB as 2000's New Artist of the Year. Since then, she has played the Sisters Folk Festival, the Freight and Salvage and other top venues across the US. Also performing is Claudia's pal, KAYE RODDEN. Info, www.claudiarussell.com. $15.
+
Rich Warren, of the nationally syndicated radio show “Midnight Special” wrote in “Sing Out” magazine, “Claudia Russell is a vocalist in the old-fashioned sense. She can really sing. And Russell is a great live performer. Not only does she have an impressive set of pipes, she interprets songs rather than merely conveying lyrics. She sounds involved with the songs. Her band - let’s just say they’re hot. Connect them to the power grid and they’d light up a medium-sized town.” Tonight, that town is Altadena. Claudia most often performs accompanied by her husband Bruce Kaplan on mandolin and guitar, and Carl Byron on keyboards and accordion. Claudia has an expressive voice that’s every bit at home on a whispery ballad as on a full-tilt Buddy Holly-style romp. Her songs deal with the classic themes of songwriting: love, longing and loss, with an occasional foray into silliness.
+
KAYE RODDEN, a Bay Area-based singer songwriter, plays and writes folk and old time country music in the style of, say, Gillian Welch and David Rawlings. She performs as an acoustic duo with her husband, Ted, on vocals and guitar. She was born in Altadena and grew up in neighboring Pasadena before moving north. Claudia tells us that Kaye and Ted will join her for “a super sweet harmony session.” Looks to be a fine night with two of the Bay area’s sweetest songbirds. $15.

8 pm RIDERS OF THE PURPLE SAGE with EVAN MARSHALL (aka “RELAXIN' JACKSON”) opening on magic mandolin, and joining the band on fiddle - the band named in FolkWorks as the best band in the “Best of 2008 / Top Ten,” with Evan Marshall, named in FolkWorks among the “Best of 2008 / Top Ten” live instrumentalists in L.A. - at the venue named in FolkWorks as L.A.’s best intimate acoustic listening room venue - The Coffee Gallery Backstage, 2029 N Lake Av, Altadena; info www.coffeegallery.com; reserv 626-398-7917. The Riders of the Purple Sage have enjoyed L.A.’s most successful monthly residency here, routinely selling-out six weeks in advance. This is the last of their special two-night extra bookings, and the last of several the best chances you’ll have to catch them performing their formidable acoustic show - without planning way ahead for that six-week waiting list.
+
The RIDERS OF THE PURPLE SAGE are one of, if not "the" most historical Western band in the world, having starred in films and radio for the pre-war days to today. Today's Riders, under the leadership of CODY BRYANT, put on a show rich with old and new music. Band members are virtuosos on their instruments, including five-string banjo, hot lead guitar, twin fiddles, steel guitar, upright bass, drums/percussion, and consummate vocals. While keeping alive the tradition of the original Riders' sound and enjoying the endorsement of author SHARON WILLING, widow of band founder FOY WILLING, they continue to write and perform new material that carries on and builds upon their signature style. Adding a strong swing influence (ala Bob Wills and his Texas Playboys), their performances appeal to listeners and dancers of all ages.
+
Venue impresario Bob Stane says, “Today’s Riders bring together hot swing riffs with smooth harmonies that, at the end of the show, leave the audience wanting more. Their sound and show makes you feel that all is well in the West.” Larry Wines wrote of one performance that they were “ethereal” and “orchestral,” and indeed, they often perform with symphony orchestras. Larry added in that review, “They exceeded musicianship. They exceeded their genre.” Bob Stane adds, “You owe it to yourself to see this most amazing and amusing exhibit. Forget what you think you like and don’t like. See The Riders Of The Purple Sage.”
+
Read all about honors for the venue, and the band named as the best band in the “Best of 2008 / Top Ten” feature in FolkWorks, at www.folkworks.org/content/view/35788/166 $18.

8 pm LARRY MAURICE, the multiple-award-winning top cowboy poet and storyteller, at the venue named in FolkWorks as L.A.’s best intimate acoustic listening room venue - The Coffee Gallery Backstage, 2029 N Lake Av, Altadena; info www.coffeegallery.com; reserv 626-398-7917. He interweaves history and folklore and enlightens as he entertains. He’s been a guest on radio’s “Tied to the Tracks.” And he doesn’t get to Southern Cal very often. This will be a fine show that will bring you laughter and tears of joy. Larry received the Academy of Western Artists coveted “Will Rogers Cowboy Award” for Cowboy Poet of the Year, twice. His CDs have received great reviews and have been nominated “Album of the Year” by the Academy of Western Artists.
+
He has hosted television specials for the FOX network, and his one man show, “Cowboy; The Spirit, The Lore, The Legacy,” continues to keep him traveling around the country. Through poetry, song and stories, Larry is able to transport his audiences back in time, allowing them to experience the cattle drives, characters and critters of the old west.
+
LARRY MAURICE has spent the last twenty years as a Cowboy, horse wrangler and packer in the Eastern Sierra and the high deserts of Nevada. You’re likely to find him leading a string of mules into the back country, on a horse drive in the Owens Valley of California, or working with longhorn cattle in Virginia City, Nevada. Over the last few years, Larry has had to juggle his need to be horseback with his busy entertainment schedule. A sought after entertainer, not only for his Cowboy Poetry that speaks from the heart of the day to day Cowboy, but also for his ability to breath life into the history of the American West. He can also be found acting as an announcer or master of ceremonies for rodeos, parades, mounted shooting competitions, film festivals or singing the National Anthem for the opening of a major sports event. He is an exceptional after-dinner speaker and he spends a great deal of time in schools around the country, talking to children about the role the Cowboy has played and is continuing to play in the development of the west.
+
About this show, he says, “Great place! One of the great performance venues in Southern California. Small and intimate room that only holds about 50 people. So far this will be my only show in the L.A. area for this year. Tuesday night - what else do you have to do? Thanks to Bob Stane and his crew for having me back. Tickets are $15 and the proceeds go to a good cause (keeping my dogs and horses fed). I expect I'll sell out; reservations are strongly recommended.” $15.

He’s worked with, produced, arranged, or played on albums by Fiona Apple, Sheryl Crow, U2, Silverchair, Ry Cooder, The Everly Brothers, Laurie Anderson, Tim Buckley, Randy Newman, Harry Nilsson, The Byrds, Rufus Wainwright, Judy Collins, Ringo Starr, Keith Moon, Carly Simon, T-Bone Burnett, Bonnie Raitt, Peter Case, Gordon Lightfoot, Sonny & Cher, Little Feat, Inara George, and countless other respected & well known artists, played a key role in completing "Sail On Sailor," with the Beach Boys, and his partnering with Brian Wilson for the SMiLE album is the stuff of legend. He recently completed work with Brian Wilson on That Lucky Old Sun, a new narrative song cycle, and maintains his "day job"…film work on scores by Ry Cooder and others, writing and arranging for Shelley Duvall's children's TV series, and other pursuits. He composed "Black Sheep" for Walk Hard: The Dewey Cox Story, worked with Inara George on An Invitation, released in 2008, performed at the Walt Disney Concert Hall, and contributed to the new record by The Shortwave Set, a collaborative project by John Cale and Danger Mouse, tentatively titled Replica Sun Machine. All that AND five acclaimed albums of his own work. If a life in music is what you aspire to, Van Dyke Parks is one of the few who can truly say, “Been there/Done that” and is STILL doing it! Priceless insight from an industry legend, FREE! Well, $5 requested for the nonprofit Songnet, otherwise it’s free.

They’ve performed live on radio’s “Tied to the Tracks,” where listeners reveled in FISHTANK ENSEMBLE as a unique eclectic blend of old time Americana flavored Romanian folk, Gypsy, Balkan, Flamenco, Klezmer, Japanese smamisen, and originals. This lively and unusual group are all talented musicians mastering their respective instruments, violin, saw, accordion, shamisen, flamenco guitar, contrabass, percussion and voice. Romanian folk music forms the bulk of the material with a healthy helping of flamenco, Swedish folk music, klezmer, Gypsy jazz, other folk sources as well as original songs.
+
“For those in need of having their dervish whirled, Fishtank Ensemble are the rompin', stompin' leaders of cross-pollinated Gypsy music. French fiddler FABRICE MARTINEZ paid dues gigging Europe in a mule-drawn caravan, including stints in Romani villages. EL DOUJE is the master of 21st-century flamenco guitar, while AARON SEEMAN [aka Duckmandu] is the king of punk accordion. Audience eyes tend to focus on URSULA KNUDSON, not only for her virtuosic fiddle, saw playing and a voice that sings in octaves not yet invented, but also for her sensual beauty. The mix includes a Japanese shamisen player and a rock-bottom upright bassist, and we have a young band that is one of the most thrilling live acts on the planet.” - Michael Simmons, LA Weekly. STEPHANIE BETTMAN & THE BOYS continue to be discovered by audiences all over Southern California, and Stephanie is named in FolkWorks among the “Best of 2008 / Top Ten” Female Singer-Songwriters in Los Angeles. Stephanie and the Boys have performed live on radio’s “Tied to the Tracks.” Venue impresario Bob Stane says, “If you have not yet discovered this terrific group, do yourself a favor and come to the Coffee Gallery the first Thursday of the month for some sublime original Roots / Bluegrass / Americana,” where they begin their new monthly residency with this show. Former theater actress and trapeze artist Stephanie Bettman is an award-winning singer-songwriter and fiddler. She and her band were the Grand Prize winners in the 2008 “Southern California Live Acoustic Music Competition” and among the winners in the 2007 “Topanga Banjo Fiddle contest.” When they played the Sedona Bluegrass Festival, buzz on the street labeled her "the next Alison Krauss." Her violin has taken her from the National Theater Of Korea to The Capistrano Valley Symphony and beyond. She's acted and produced films, theater and commercials, written screenplays, and performed as a trapeze and circeau artist. "A fiddle playing charmer with a set of pipes she knows how to use and gift of gab that regularly amuses her audiences" - Jesse Lilly, Mondo Cult Magazine.
+
Stephanie is backed by an impressive acoustic ensemble, including multi-instrumentalist LUKE HALPIN, late of Border Radio. Luke was pegged early-on as a "musical phenom" by the Southern Cal press, and he brings beautiful harmonies and fine pickin' to the ensemble, who perform some of his original songs. And there’s DANNY CIARFALLIA on guitar and vocals, and BRIAN NETZLEY on bass and vocals. These illustrious band members have worked as studio musicians in Nashville, toured this country and others, and opened for everyone from Kenny Chesney to Merle Haggard. Based from L.A., Stephanie and her band have shared the stage with some of Southern California's favorite bluegrass and roots artists at festivals and in numerous respected venues. Venue impresario Bob Stane says, “His fusion flamenco will have you awe struck. Many times headlining at The Coffee Gallery Backstage.” Bob quotes one review that reads, Robby “is an amazingly talented and personable musician. The title of this review should really be ‘Hands of Glory’ because that is exactly what Robby Longley has. Robby’s neo-classical/flamenco guitar filled the Center and each of us lucky enough to be at tonight’s concert with sheer wonder. Robby didn’t play music, he channeled music. The music came from his very essence and filled the space and each listener with awe as his fingers blurred across the guitar. ‘Evangeline,’ named for the Longfellow poem, was a musical tour de force. Robby swept us up into the music and we were still in another world when the final note died away. ‘Bourbon St. Burlesque’ had us believing we were in New Orleans with a bass rhythm that was finger-snapping.” Your editor says, see him now in an intimate room where you can watch his hands, or wait, pay a lot more, and see him in a big concert hall. Priced at $15, Bob Stane calls the price, “A gift.”

Sat, Mar 7; in Washington State:
“WORLD FESTIVAL OF SACRED MUSIC: ARTBEAT OF THE SPIRIT” in Olympia, WA, is a program of Interfaith Works, and was inspired by other interfaith music festivals including those in Fez, Morocco, and Vancouver, Canada. These and other sacred music and arts festivals were inspired by a call by the Dalai Lama for such events as the world approached the new millennium: "Among the many forms in which the human spirit has tried to express its innermost yearnings and perceptions, music is perhaps the most universal. There is something in music that transcends and unites. This is evident in the sacred music of every community... music that expresses the universal yearning that is shared by people all over the globe." The WSMF is a volunteer-run festival with state and federal nonprofit status as a program of Interfaith Works. The festival is a showcase for musicians, dancers, and artists from the Pacific Northwest and beyond, all part of our world's rich spiritual tapestry. “This all-day, family-friendly global celebration is a rare opportunity to hear the music of different sacred traditions in one location. The festival has expanded beyond music to include dance, interactive workshops, and visual arts that represent different spiritual paths. The festival is able to offer such a rich array of performances and displays through the support of festival sponsors, and the generosity of the musicians and artists, most of whom donate their performances, helping the festival to stretch its small budget and present the widest possible array of diversity each year.”

All four are accomplished vocalists and pleasing harmonies dominate the sets. Dan is a singer-songwriter, with a gentle guitar style that he has carried over to the dobro and pedal steel, and Gayle, his wife, plays the keyboard for the group. Debe, the other passionate singer- songwriter, plays guitar and bass and Scott rounds out the instrumentals with his mandolin and driving blues harmonica. They have individually been part of the Pasadena and L.A. music scene for many years and have played with other bands, including Smokewood. $18.

"Alasdair Fraser is recognized throughout the world as one of the finest fiddle players Scotland has ever produced. [His] name is synonymous with the vibrant cultural renaissance which is transforming the Scottish musical scene." - SCOTS Magazine. Scottish fiddle Alasdair Fraser appears in his favored current pairing with the young American cellist extraordinaire Natalie Haas, continuing to pursue their resurrection and reinvention of the classic musical marriage between big and small fiddles, a familiar feature of Scottish music in the 18th century. The duo’s near-telepathic interplay is dazzling both for its breathtaking technical prowess and its boundless dynamism, be it in tunes from that same golden era, the age of Burns and Gow, or Fraser’s own memorable compositions. "Alasdair Fraser is recognized throughout the world as one of the finest fiddle players Scotland has ever produced. [His] name is synonymous with the vibrant cultural renaissance which is transforming the Scottish musical scene." - SCOTS Magazine. 8 pm TWO DOLLAR BASH bring award-winning bluegrass from Germany, plus SHOSHINZ, with acclaimed comedy from Japan, for a rather amazing “International Double Headliner Show” at the venue named in FolkWorks as L.A.’s best intimate acoustic listening room venue - The Coffee Gallery Backstage, 2029 N Lake Av, Altadena; info www.coffeegallery.com; reserv 626-398-7917.
+
TWO DOLLAR BASH, from Berlin, Germany and SHOSHINZ, from Japan. Bluegrass from Germany and comedy from Tokyo. Could it be any better? Is venue impresario Bob Stane happy? Oh, yes. Since forging their line-up in 2003, Two Dollar Bash has toured constantly throughout Europe and America. In September 2005, they won the “Rising Legend” award at the 30th “Old-Time Country and Traditional Music Festival” in Missouri Valley, Iowa. In 2006, Two Dollar Bash played the “Latitude Festival” in England, and were one of four bands picked from around the world to perform at the “International Country Night” showcase at the “Popkomm” music industry conference in Berlin, the most international of all music business festivals in Europe. 2007 brought tours of Ireland, Belgium, Germany, the Czech Republic and an extensive tour of the US and Canada, including their first stint at SXSW and at Canadian Music Week in Toronto.
+
TWO DOLLAR BASH are an acoustic folk-country-bluegrass band based in Berlin, with members hailing from Scotland, Ireland and France. Tony plays guitar, Matt plays the mandolin and harp, Mark plays the banjo and mandola, Joe plays guitar and bass, and they all sing and write songs. Two Dollar Bash share a keen sense of musical camaraderie that comes with 15 years of playing together in various incarnations throughout Europe. Their songs of longing, loving, and wayfaring are fitting tales to be swapped over hobo campfires or rows of empty shot glasses in dark corners of musty barrooms. Their sound is distinctly Americana, but delicately informed by their Celtic and European backgrounds. Two Dollar Bash are making their debut in the L.A. area, after playing the Folk Alliance Conference in Memphis, and before heading to the SXSW Music Festival in Austin, where they’ve been invited back for the third consecutive year.
+
2008 saw them back in Austin for their second visit to SXSW before the release of their third album, “Lost River.” They spent the following summer and fall touring the UK, Germany, Belgium and the Netherlands. This swing through the States will take them through Missouri, Colorado and Utah before reaching the West Coast.
+
SHOSHINZ is Japanese for "shy timid people". But these two surreal Tokyo maids are subservient to nothing and no one. Their delicate silences and coy demeanor will lure you in, and then they will bend your mind with brilliant physical theater, dance, absurd music and song. They will not clean your house, but they will blow your mind. Yanomi and Kuronatsu of SHOSHINZ have starred in numerous theater productions in Tokyo and elsewhere in Japan and have toured to Canada, Egypt, Russia, Iran, and many countries across Asia.
+
SHOSHINZ formed in 2005 and is now one of the most renowned comedy troupes in Japan. They are now performing in the U.S. for the first time with their “Shoshinz: We Love You Too” West Coast Tour. "Serious skills are at play here, with not a glance nor a step wasted - full of kooky surprises.” - The Montreal Gazette. $15 gets you both acts.

8 pm FISHTANK ENSEMBLE at the venue named in FolkWorks as L.A.’s best intimate acoustic listening room venue - The Coffee Gallery Backstage, 2029 N Lake Av, Altadena; info www.coffeegallery.com; reserv 626-398-7917. They’ve performed live on radio’s “Tied to the Tracks,” and they generate excitement wherever they go. Venue impresario Bob Stane says, “The Fishtankians are landing. Fabulous. One of our very hottest acts, returning.”
+
They are a lively and unusual ensemble consisting of violin, musical saw, accordion, shamisen, flamenco guitar, bass, percussion and voice. Rumanian folk music forms the bulk of the material, with a healthy helping of Flamenco, Swedish folk music, Klezmer, other folk sources and original songs that range from clever to fun to intricate. The Gypsy violin of Fabrice Martinez is the backbone of the sound, and has to be heard to be believed.
+
In May 2005, the band made their first album, "Superraoul," with six live performance tracks recorded over just a week and a half. In summer 2005, Fabrice and Ursula moved to Italy for two years and returned to the States in Fall 2007, encouraged by the response to “Superraoul.”
+
Fabrice Martinez plays violin and violintromba; the classically-trained Ursula Knudson plays musical saw, violin, banjolele, percussion, and does vocals, and self-taught on the saw, she won 2nd place in the 2004 International Saw Festival; Josh and Justin Petrojvic - the peripatetic Petrojvic brothers - play accordion and trombone, and are known for their antics as the duo Petrojvic Blasting Company; Douglas Smolens is an accomplished Flamenco guitarist performing with the band as "El Douje," and he has a recently released Flamenco fusion CD entitled “Worlds Collide” that is available at www.cdbaby.com/eldouje; Djordje Stijepovic plays slap bass and was a member of leading world music bands in Serbia, where he finished classical music conservatory - Djordje performs solo world music/jazz, and provides his signature slap for rockabilly band Atomic Sunset, and for Deke Dickerson, Slim Jim Phantom (from Stray Cats), Lemmy (from Motorhead), and more, and plays with bluegrass, Cajun, jazz, blues and other bands. $15.

+
An artist with ten albums to her credit, most recently “Bye Bye Blackbird” on MCG Jazz, KEVYN LETTAU is currently touring the US. Kevyn got her big break when legendary Brazilian pianist-bandleader Sergio Mendes discovered her. Al Jarreau was a mentor, too, and she’s worked with guitarist Peter Sprague. Kevyn toured and recorded with Mendes for eight years, developing her own vocal style along the way.
+
Kevyn's first two solo releases were “Kevyn Lettau,” and “Braziljazz.” They led to critical acclaim and a loyal following both in the U.S. and abroad, particularly in Japan and the Philippines, where she achieved near-superstar status. Kevyn was a spokesmodel for a soft drink company, featured in multiple television commercials and print ads that ran for years. She is currently the spokesmodel for Philippine Airlines and Sunlife Insurance.
+
After her first two records, Kevyn signed with JVC Music, where she recorded four albums, “Simple Life,” “Another Season,” “Universal Language,” and “The Language of Flowers.” With her next label, Universal Music, she recorded “Police,” her exploration of the music from the pop-rock genre-bending group of that name, followed by “Little Things,” and “The Color of Love.” She’s come a long way since growing-up in Berlin, Germany, landing in San Diego at age 14, catching the singing bug by 17, and singing jazz, R&B and Brazilian music in and around the San Diego area with guitarist Peter Sprague from a young age. $15.

8 pm SLIGO RAGS, named in FolkWorks among L.A.’s “Best of 2008 / Top Ten” bands, perform at the venue named in FolkWorks as L.A.’s best intimate acoustic listening room venue - The Coffee Gallery Backstage, 2029 N Lake Av, Altadena; reserv 626-398-7917; info www.coffeegallery.com. They played radio’s “Tied to the Tracks” on St. Patrick’s Day, 2007, at the time they had EIGHT of the Top Ten songs on one Celtic Music Chart. No other artist or band repeated even once anywhere in the Top 100. And they earned a “Listener Favorite” on radio’s “TttT.” Venue impresario Bob Stane says, “Such a talented group. Drawing big crowds without it bein’ a wake. As usual, they’ve been winning awards, but modest they are.”
+
Two-time winners of the “Orange County Music Awards” for “Best Folk Band,” this dynamic ensemble presents Celtic Folk with a decidedly bluegrass attitude. Using fiddle, acoustic guitar, electric bass, and percussion, Sligo Rags is taking the local and not-so-local Celtic music scene by storm. Their debut studio recording, "The Night Before the Morning After," still gets international airplay, and was called "the best I've heard from a stateside band" by Celtic Beat Magazine. Says the San Diego Troubadour, "This band can light up an atmosphere as dim as the Guinness stout you just ordered at the bar... Sligo Rags really know their Celtic music." Don't be surprised if elements of country, gypsy jazz, and swing manage to sneak their way into the act. Bob Stane adds, “Much fun. This is money-back, no-questions-asked-if-you-are-not-thrilled. Bring friends. Dynamic, up tempo, multi-talented. A fusion that just crackles.” $18.
