BOULDER ACOUSTIC SOCIETY at the Coffee Gallery Backstage, October 21, 2009

The name Boulder Acoustic Society may sound like a monthly gathering of Colorado audio engineers, but, in fact, is the moniker of four lively musicians who come together on stages across the country to entertain many a sell-out audience.
+
Recently, in the intimate confines of Altadena’s Coffee Gallery Backstage, the band presented their multi-faceted music machine for an evening of spirited song and a few stories from the road.
+
With a sharp jab or subtle irony, they can get you grinning broadly to any number of rollicking up tempo numbers and then cut you off at the knees with a lament like accordion/keyboard player, Scott McCormick’s “Take My Hand.” From there, they take that lump out of your throat and boost you up with an inspired gospel hymn.
+
Drummer Scott Aller has the tough task of keeping the beat and adding the varied percussive elements on the vastly different range of tunes that the band generates. Aaron Keim juggles the guitar, uke, lap steel, banjo, alto horn and cornet when not posted behind his upright bass and singing. Few groups can cover as much ground instrumentally and material-wise, but BAS carries their own adventurous Americana songbook and gave energetic readings from that eclectic repertoire.

All songs are credited to the band as a whole on their recent recording, “Punchline,” but in concert each member gets a beam of the limelight. A song such as “Frog Pajama Waltz” allows ace fiddler Kailin Yong to show his bowing chops, while adding fire on any number of other tunes.
+
Not many bands can be everything to everybody, but BAS touches upon so many musical areas that if they did a show comprised of early music lullabies, bird calls of the Pacific Northwest, Paganini violin concertos and the Star Spangled Banner on ukulele, you would only be mildly surprised, but not shocked at all by how well they do it.
+

1) BE PART OF PASADENA’S LARGEST FOOD DRIVE this weekend at the “Fork in the Road,” where Pasadena Av divides from St. John and creates a triangle N of Bellfontaine (all just N of California Av, near Huntington Hospital).

On Sat & Sun, Nov 21 & 22, you can do a drive-by drop-off of food for Union Station Homeless Services, from 8 am to 4 pm, and “Put the Fork in Hunger,” as the event’s name says.

So, why did you read this in the Music Guide? Well, because the “Fork in the Road” – an 18 foot high fork sculpture, was recently dedicated as a guerilla art placement in honor of the 75th birthday of Coffee Gallery Backstage impresario Bob Stane. In addition to being honored with the fork, Bob just received the Folk Alliance FAR West Ambassador Award for all he does to support folk-Americana and acoustic artists. A singer and multi-instrumentalist with many years’ performing experience throughout California and the West, Peter Feldmann has been presenting bluegrass, folk, string band, and related musics since the early 1960s, and is known as the founder of the Santa Barbara Old Time Fiddler's Convention, and the original Bluebird Café in Santa Barbara, a music club highly influential on the Southern California Music scene. Peter is the recipient of the 2008 "Music Legend" award from the Topanga Banjo/Fiddle Association, and last year taught a string band performance class for the Department of Music at UCSB. John Robinson, executive director of the Santa Barbara Symphony, calls Peter "The pre-eminent bluegrass artist in the area!" and A. Bennett writes in the Santa Barbara News-Press of Peter’s "Deft musicianship ... refreshing ... he let the songs speak for themselves ... something special indeed!"

The five-piece Very Lonesome Boys band includes bassist Tom Lee, veteran of the Cache Valley Drifters and The Bluegrass Cardinals, The banjo duties are ably handled by record producer David West (Play Ball Productions), known for his dynamic guitar and banjo work, while Tommy Marton, a leading exponent of Texas contest style fiddling as well as bluegrass music, will preside on fiddle. Mike Nadolson, from Lake Elsinore, CA plays guitar and adds lead and harmony vocals to the band's sound. The band presents a stimulating mixture of bluegrass standards and re-visitations of earlier country music from the 1920s and 30s. The band's shows will feature selections from their recently-released CD, "Home On The Grange" as well as Peter's adaptation of some numbers from his new trio CD "Down By The Brazos", out this month. When he played the Fret House, they noted, “Stan West is something of an institution on the Southern Californian blues scene, delighting the patrons of the area's blues clubs with his potent slide guitar riffs for around thirty years, as well as opening for artists like Bo Diddley, Johnny Winter and Robben Ford. A rather astute observer of that four-letter word called ‘life,’ Stan West knows the blues.”

Stan has quite a history, indeed, including performing on stage with all those luminaries, and even with Janis Joplin. In 1977, a stroke paralyzed one side of his body and robbed him of the ability to play. Overcoming that with a new and unique slide guitar style, he launched the Stan West Band in ’79. Beginning in ’83, he became proprietor of Stan’s Guitar Shop in Glendora. His previous CDs were released in ’94 and ’97. More recently, Stan was diagnosed with coronary artery disease, and has been forced to declare “no more smoke-filled clubs!” Catching Stan perform these days is a rare treat. Bo Wilson is a rock guitarist, singer and songwriter, hailing from the beautiful red rocks of Northern Arizona, with a career that expands over 40 years in the music industry. Bo began his career in the Nashville country music scene in the early 1970s, rubbing shoulders with rock & country pioneers. As a guitarist and songwriter, Bo was able to parlay his talent, as a session musician and writer for many popular outlaw country and rock acts. Sharing the studio with the likes of Chris Gantry, Kris Kristofferson, Carl Perkins, and Lee Clayton, to playing guitar with then up-and-coming Waylon Jennings.

Bo eventually ran into Nashville music industry rep Niki Shrode, who led to a deal with Bob Beckham and Chip Young of Mega Records. Bo sat in on sessions with legendary artists such as the Glazier Brothers to Zack Van Arsdale, at the legendary Columbia Studios. Bo also signed a deal withCedarwood Publishing Co, which allowed him to write with some of Nashville's famed artists.

Bo, with guitar in hand, toured the U.S. from Nashville and Memphis to the Hawaiian Islands with the Bo Wilson Band, which eventually led him back to sweet home Arizona. Bo was born and raised in the Phoenix area, and at age 18 made his musical debut on popular local TV show Wallace and Ladmo.... where he was bit with the bug to entertain. Fred says it has “a fine sound system, and a no-alcohol good vibe.” FRED STARNER is the officially-named “GRAND DUKE OF HOBO MINSTRELS” by the National Hobo Convention in Britt, Iowa. Musical funnyman PHIL VAN TEE has taken his homemade cookie-tin banjo to stages everywhere, opening for nearly all the big-name country music acts. DON GRIERSON is a legendary A&R executive who has worked with many of the most notable artists in modern music history.
