Why we’re here, on Blogger.com: after a long presence on MySpace, that site suddenly changed parameters to accept only short posts, so we had to endure a ponderous and VERY time-consuming process to list events in small increments, usually only one day at a time. It was too much, so we have begun posting the calendar and news here. We’ll see how it works, and if everyone adjusts and gives positive feedback, we’ll move here, and soon.

10 am TICKET TO RIDE (a tribute to The Beatles) perform for the “Monday Morning Concerts for Children” free series at the Madrid Theatre, 21622 Sherman Way, Canoga Park 91303; 818-347-9419. Requires reserv at 818-347-9938. The music of THE BEATLES lives on from generation to generation. TICKET TO RIDE performs renditions of those well-known songs, complete with the familiar outfits, amplifiers, and microphones from the era of Beatlemania. The Valley Cultural Center's children’s series places professional musicians in an intimate, educational setting with five hundred K-5th grade children each week throughout the summer. Exposure to music at an early age has been proven to increase academic achievement in math and language and increased comprehension and communication skills. The joy of music and song in our daily lives strikes a personal chord and is invaluable in bridging the gap between peoples of varying cultures and ethnic backgrounds. This interactive program includes a brief history lesson of each musical style, a dynamic performance with selected children invited to the stage, and an opportunity for children to ask questions of the performers. Monday Morning Concerts for Children serves 6,500 young students each season.

Tori will sign her new book, “Comic Book Tattoo,” a collection of comics by artists based on her songs published by Image Comics. In association with MySpace Comic Books (www.myspace.com/comicbooks), 200 lucky fans will get a chance to meet Tori and have her sign the new book. The first 200 people to purchase the book starting at 10:30am Mon, Jul 21 at Amoeba Music, will receive a wristband for the signing at 6 pm. No books will be sold prior to Monday at 10:30 am. It’s “An Exciting Trio of Continental Music,” with Tommy Davy, on guitar solo; Jimmy Grant on guitar; Olliver Steinberg on contrabass. Tommy Davy, guitarist, is a young disciple of gypsy jazz legend Django Reinhardt. Born and raised in Laguna Beach, California, Tommy is one of a handful of Americans promoting the tradition of European gypsy jazz. His repertoire ranges from French Gypsy “Manouche” to traditional folk music of Eastern Europe, poignant gypsy melodies to the swinging standards of the Hot Club of France. Tommy demonstrates his mastery of the guitar with blisteringly rapid technique. At just 20 years of age he is making a name for himself in the international gypsy jazz community. Tommy has performed with acknowledged masters of the genre: Angelo Debarre, Andreas Oberg, Florin Niculescu, Ludovic Beier, Robin Nolan, and Stephane Wrembel. In 2005 he toured California with David Grisman and the Gypsy Kidz on Amoeba Music’s Gypsy Caravan Tour. He sites as his greatest influence the living guitar legend Angelo Debarre. Tommy Davy is recognized as a prodigy and is leading the new wave of gypsy jazz guitar in the United States. $15.

LARRY DEAN was born in Texas, grew up in Oklahoma and Idaho, moved to L.A. after high school and started a band called LARRY DEAN & THE SHOOTERS. They've been a staple in the country circuit ever since. They've headlined for years at the Cowboy Palace in Chatsworth. Soon after arriving in L.A., Larry won an ASCAP Songwriters Scholarship which led to his first CCMA (California Country Music Association) Song of the Year award for “Heartbreak Won't Let Me Sleep Tonight.” He was also named the CCMA Entertainer of the Year, a tribute to his growing skills as a performer and entertainer. As an indie recording artist, Larry managed to break onto the national charts with his CD, “Outside Chance.” The title track was a co-write with WAYNE CARSON THOMPSON, writer of “The Letter“ and “Always On My Mind.” Larry's songs have appeared in feature films including “Deep Impact” (with Robert Duvall) and “Drowning Mona” (with Danny Devito). He continues to have songs placed in daytime and primetime TV. Larry has toured extensively throughout Europe, Australia, and New Zealand. He continues to be recognized with various local honors, including “Country CD of the Year,” “Country Song of the Year” (for his duet with Dale Watson), and “Cover Song Performance,” for a remake of “Tonight's The Night“ by Rod Stewart, all at the new 2007 MAVRIC Awards show in Ventura County. www.myspace.com/larrydeancountry.

MARTY AXELROD has performed twice on radio’s “Tied to the Tracks” with concept album partner NICOLE GORDON as “Songs of Shiloh” (www.songsofshiloh.com). MSSS host Garret Swayne says, “It's hard to fathom how in the world this guy doesn't have dozens of major label cuts and at least a few gold records on his wall. His stuff is that good.” He’s highly respected in the L.A. songwriter community. Garret continues, “His songs are so clever and eclectic, and they cut across so many different styles and genres, it's really hard to put Marty in any one box. Marty also recently wrote an entire musical called ‘Emperor Norton,’ (www.emperornortonthemusical.com) about a famous but eccentric early resident of old San Francisco, which played for 3 months in SF and will reopen there again early next year.” Marty's 12-year-old son Julian Axelrod will kick-off the Open Mic with his stand-up comedy.

CalJAS is a powerful force in bringing some of the best jazz artists in Southern California, especially singers, to restaurants, clubs and other performance spaces in eastern Los Angeles County and the Inland Empire, an area that previously had relatively few opportunities for jazz musicians to perform.
