+
It's billed as "A night of very special musical talent."

SHIR HaSHIRIM ORCHESTRA is directed by Rev. Gabbai Eli Shirim Lester, with guitarist PHIL BELL, percussionist MICHAEL LEVY, vocalists SUZIE SHIAMAN, FUMINA, MICHAEL BOYD, and surprise guests for the evening.
+
Rev. Dov, organizer of the event, says, "Our performers will ring out the year on a grand note. Bring your instrument for the 'Jammin' portion of the night! ...we honor our active duty service men and women, aging veterans their care-givers and those who support our extended SHIR HaSHIRIM community year round. Join dedicated volunteers, featuring the Veterans' Holiday Celebration staff and crew who have brought holiday cheer to our veterans for 20 years..."
+
This event takes its name from a singular ancient text about love -- in all its forms. Shir haShirim, the Song of Songs, is unlike any other book in the Judeo- Christian Bible. Here's an illustrative comment from a review of a new translation: "With its sensuality, its erotic nature, and its mysterious placement within the most sacred of books, it is no wonder that readers, both ancient and modern, think Shir haShirim is hot stuff." -- Rabbi Jill Jacobs.

Singer-songwriter LEE KOCH has taken some unexpected turns in the past couple of years. From bandleader to baker he halted his pursuit of a music career to explore a different avenue. Baking bread only lasted a few months before Lee got an opportunity to be on national television as a contestant on NBC’s The Voice. It was a short stint, but provided enough exposure to get him back into music and on the road. Now with his second album in the works and his first child on the way Lee plans to tour the country with his family in hopes of continuing on in music for years to come. Hear Lee introduce the songs from his upcoming album at Zoey’s, his musical home-away-from-home. More at www.leekochmusic.com. $10 cover.

+
THE BIRDHIVE BOYS is a 5 piece traditional bluegrass outfit based in Brooklyn, NY. The boys approach a traditional country and bluegrass repertory with instrumental prowess and a unique rhythmic sensibility. The band has recently shared the stage with bluegrass supergroups Michael Cleveland and Dailey & Vincent and has just finished a new EP set for release this November.
+
With the "classic" bluegrass look and sound, The Birdhive Boys have been compared to Bill Monroe's Bluegrass Boys and neo-traditionalists the Johnson Mountain Boys. Holding down a two-year long residency at the National Underground in Manhattan's Lower East Side, The Boys have shared the stage with many fine acts, including national touring act The Holy Ghost Tent Revival, Grammy winners Dailey and Vincent, and New York City bluegrass heavyweight Michael Daves (Chris Thile, Steve Martin). They recently finished a 4-song EP called "The Corn Lady", available for free download through their website, and hard copies for sale (with complementary autographs) directly from the Boys at their shows.
+
The Birdhive Boys started in 2008 with brothers Zack and Sam Bruce rediscovering the songs of their youth. Mom and Dad were casual bluegrass pickers and singers, and the songs of The Stanley Brothers, Del McCoury, Doc Watson, and Tony Rice comprised much of Zack and Sam's childhood soundtrack. The Bruce brothers started playing the brother harmony repertoire in Zack's downtown loft, and after about a year they decided to put together a full band for shows. They were able to recruit fellow New Jerseyan bassist-of-all-trades Max Johnson, St. Louis flatpicker Justin Camerer, and Ellery Marshall on the banjo. The Boys can be found in venues in and around NYC, such as the Living Room, Rockwood Music Hall and the National Underground. Check them out at http://birdhiveboys.com.
+
EVAN MARSHALL is widely regarded as one of the greatest mandolin virtuosos ever. He possesses an uncanny technique which the Raleigh-Durham Independent called "superhuman," the Los Angeles Times called "remarkable," the Washington Post labeled "truly dazzling," and the Fresno Bee called "mind-boggling." Besides his "obvious virtuosity" (Pasadena Star News), he also has "in color and texture . . . a stunning mastery of interpretation" (St. Paul Pioneer Press). Evan's accomplishments are legendary among other artists of the plucked string: The late Chet Atkins called him "one of the few great musicians of our time;" David Grisman put it simply: "the world's fastest mandolinist."
+
ALEX FINAZZO has become a fixture in the acoustic music scene of Southern California. Playing in groups such as the Blue Creek Band, Scott Gates Band, Soledad Mountain Band and more, he has performed at the region’s largest Bluegrass festivals and consistently draws audiences in with his dynamic and powerful flat-picking. His style makes no apologies for his Bluegrass roots, yet has evolved into an eclectic blend of influences rich with heartfelt melodies, impressive technique and a dash of dry wit. With an infectious passion for acoustic music, seeing Alex perform is akin to joining him in celebration of the power of music to enrich the spirit.

ANGEL TAYLOR - Crowds have been good to Taylor, whose road resume reads like a who’s who of singer-songwriter successes, having traveled the country with acts including Grammy Award winner Adele, Gavin Degraw, Ingrid Michaelson and Mat Kearny, Five For Fighting, Brett Dennen, Brandi Carlile and Kate Voegele. While life on the road has been filled with rewards, it’s also had its challenges for Angel, the youngest of five girls raised under the roof of a single mother. “I come from a really close family, and I’d be lying if I didn’t say there were times I wished I had my mom to talk to, instead of someone in the van on the way to the next city,” she says with a laugh, “but then, when I’m home, it’s never long before I’m itching to be on the road again! When I’m out there playing every night, it’s a lot like being able to sing my diary… it’s like the memories are with me, and I get to share them with the crowds - it’s a win-win!” More at www.facebook.com/angletaylor
+
SHANE ALEXANDER says “My goal has always been to write music that connects on a spiritual level the way classic writers like Neil Young, Paul Simon, and Bruce Springsteen do. I don't know that I'll get there, but I'm definitely getting closer." In addition to his own runs in the U.S., Canada, the UK, the Netherlands, Germany, Austria, France, and Belgium, Shane Alexander performed for the biggest audiences of his career when he opened Seal's U.S. tour in 2008. In 2006-2007, Alexander toured constantly and was asked to open two U.S. tours with Jewel. Armed only with an acoustic guitar, he won over thousands of new fans night after night. +
Robbie King is considered by many in the music world to be the very essence of the modern classic bluesman. In concert, you hear the unmistakable influence of some of the greatest R&B and blues artists of all time. Robbie's love for his craft and those who came before him is more than evident in his recordings and performances.
+
Born in Wichita Falls, Texas, RK grew up listening to and learning to admire artists like Ray Charles, Albert Collins and BB King. A desire to play that kind of music for appreciative fans became a powerful obsession and this boyhood dream of a Bluesman's life has, after decades of hard work and dedication, indeed come true.
+
Robbie has shared the stage with Bonnie Riatt, Pinetop Perkins, and countless other stars. On Robbie's CD, "Classic Case of the Blues," he approaches this uniquely American genre with a truly original treatment that pleases rock, blues and R&B fans.
+
Tonight, you'll hear Robbie return to his roots in traditional classic blues, backed by The Blues Counts with a sweet twist: Tina 'Queen of Hearts' Jackson, singer-songwriter-recording artist, Image Award Winner for "Best Performance in an Ensemble," joins-in.

SHAWN JONES is the epitome of American Roots/Rock music. He has proven over time that he has an international appeal. He is true to form of his influences, spanning from all the greats in Rock, Rhythm & Blues, Jazz & Country. With three studio albums and one live album under his belt, Shawn’s skills as a seasoned songwriter, guitarist, and vocalist have put him on the same bill with the likes of BB King, Buddy Guy, Bonnie Raitt, Jimmie Vaughan, Willie Nelson, Leon Russell, Robben Ford, Derek Trucks, Little Feat, and others. Waylon Jennings was also so impressed with his live performance that he took Jones under his wing, offering him the grand opportunity to play on his 1996 release "Right For The Time." Shawn was also Waylon's lead guitarist on Lollapalooza, and Willie's 4th of July Picnic. Shawn’s third album, appropriately titled, “All In Good Time," was completed in the fall of 2005 with Grammy winning producer/engineer David Z. In 2007 he played on country artist Deana Carter’s Vanguard Records release "The Chain", and to this day tours with her as her guitarist. More at www.shawnjonesmusic.com

+
Concert is 8-11 pm, then it’s time for food, fun, dancing, and waltzes until 12:30 in the morning. Dessert and finger-food potluck party, so bring something to share. Hosts supply the party favors and the bubbly.
+
Founded in 2006, SLUGGER O'TOOLE has emerged as one of Southern California’s hottest Celtic bands. The mighty men of Slugger O’Toole share a passion for the drinking, fighting & work songs of Ireland, and concoct a lethal brew of foot-stomping classics, heart-rending ballads, deft instrumentals, a-cappella killers and driving original songs that are true to the Celtic tradition while re-imagining the possibilities of the genre.
+
Unlike many Celtic rock bands working the circuit these days, Slugger O’Toole does not play “punk” or “hard-rock” versions of tunes from the Irish songbook. Equally at home on a tiny pub stage or in a massive amphitheatre, the band thrills audiences with up-tempo renditions that pay homage to the Celtic culture while incorporating elements of rock n roll, bluegrass and other musical styles. The band fuses traditional instrumentation with modern sound, resulting in an onstage assemblage that includes fiddle, accordion, mandolin, bodhran drums, pennywhistles, acoustic & electric guitars and bass.
+
Epic live shows at bars, theatres, fairs and festivals combined with a blue-collar work ethic and never-surrender attitude have led the L.A. Weekly magazine to anoint Slugger O'Toole as “LA’s hardest-working Irish band”.
+
Slugger O'Toole consists of a core of six brothers-in-arms on a mission to take the world of Celtic music by storm. Combining a love of entertaining audiences with an undying enthusiasm for Irish music and culture,

Some nice NYE choices there! Thanks!
Do you know of anybody doing for rock in LA what you do here for your kind of music? I find some things here I want to see, and I don't know where else to look for a good variety of real rock. I mean good rock and not strange bent technopop.
Editor's reply: Your question is a starting point for several worthwhile discussions. The LA Weekly is into indie alt rock; KCRW is into indie weird. KROQ was the response to KLOS (and before that, to the long-lost and still missed KMET). The Sound is very oriented to iconic music. Newbies, along with the album cuts of largely-lost "AOR" (album-oriented rock) radio, have no place to go on the dial. Hence, the web as the chief source of music for most people, these days. Southern Cal is overflowing with accomplished first-rate musicians in every conceivable genre, and uber-talented up-and-comers, again in every genre. Yet major media in L.A. chooses to focus on a very narrow spectrum. Some of that is quite "commercial" and some is certainly not. But there is no room at the inn for a LOT of good music. Presumably, your question comes after you have perused the offerings of other sites, including those connected with newspapers and radio. Frankly, we do NOT know of a site that covers a good spectrum of live rock performances in L.A., though we hasten to add that is not our forte. And seriously, we wish we could stop doing this for Folk-Americana and accessible classical and acoustic performances; we keep doing it because there is no other single source for most of what we cover. In fact, check the most notable folk and/or Americana and/or alt-country sites that report on live music in Southern Cal, and you're lucky to find 40% of what we cover (often, it's more like 15%). If anyone DOES know of any site that does better than that -- or a site that covers "real" rock in L.A., please let us know.
Relatives all left today. Your including free things saved us and was much appreciated. They did free museums twice last week and a concert at Pershing Square before we took them to the Dorothy Chandler for the LA County Holiday Celebration. They did Universal and Disneyland without us and we managed not to go broke with them here. - Julie and David
