1)   JULY 1st in HISTORY:
.

.
a)  Today in American history:
.
Seven score and ten years ago, on the midst of America's Civil War, the Battle of Gettysburg began. It happened where neither side intended to fight, but had simply blundered into each other. It became the greatest battle ever fought in the Americas. It was a bloody mess that raged in the farm fields and on the wooded and rocky hillsides around the small town of Gettysburg, a key junction point of ten roads and a railroad, in southern Pennsylvania.
.
It would last three days, claiming 51,000 casualties out of the total of 160,000 troops engaged from both sides.
.
It has been called "The high water mark of the Confederacy," and was Robert E. Lee's most ambitious effort to invade the North and force the Union to negotiate an end to the war and a treaty that would give the Confederate States of America their independence. Lee's previously triumphant Army of Northern Virginia failed, and the previously inept Union Army of the Potomac was ably, barely, to take the high ground, where they stood their ground -- barely -- and won. The course of history changed.
.
Eventually, America's Civil War would claim the lives of over 620,000 soldiers. Indeed, modern scholarship based on Census records shows the eventual number of those killed and wounded from the war is more like 700,000.
.
It also resulted in the end of slavery in the re-United States.
.
Observances happen all this week at Gettysburg National Military Park, run by the National Park Service, in Pennsylvania.

b)  OH, CANADA!
.
July 1st is "Canada Day" for our neighbors to the Great White North.
.
Arlene Dawn Kole and Bill Kole, two of our favorite Canuck transplants to Southern California, sent us this:
.
"Happy Canada Day to Canada eh!" along with excerpts from the book, "How To Be Canadian:"
.
"Canada is a big, cold country. Most of the people in Canada live as close as they can to the US border, where they huddle together for warmth. If you want to appear Canadian, all you have to do is tuck a beaver (Our national animal) and stroll along humming the Hockey Night in Canada theme song."
.
The excerpt continues, "Canada has no fewer than six distinct seasons: Tax; Hockey; More Hockey; Still More Hockey; Summer (also know as the July long weekend, also know as 'Was that it?'); and finally Good God, Isn't the hockey season over by now?!"
.
Beauty. Now that "Bomb Girls" has been cancelled, that's about all the Canadian we'll get for the time being, eh?

.
Mon night / Tue am, Jul 1 / 2, on AXS TV:
1 am WILCO takes the stage with their blend of idiosyncratic pop sounds from their album "Yankee Hotel Foxtrot." Highlights include "War on War," and "Jesus, etc". The critically acclaimed group reveals not only inimitable musicianship, but also a wide range of music, with hints of country, rock, punk and, perhaps most of all, experimentalism.
.

We knew something was up when the venue told us, "Tom Sauber, plus special guests,  fill-in for the Brombies." Looks like Tom drafted his entire band of music luminaries as his "special guests:" Bill Bryson, Herb Pedersen,  and Patrick Sauber.
+
Tom Sauber has been in the forefront of the traditional old-time music scene for more years than he cares to admit. An accomplished fiddle and 5 string banjo player he has appeared on countless recording projects and movie sound tracs and also has a healthy teaching schedule to boot. Tom’s love of the music had brightened up many sessions and performances with people like Alice Gerrard, Mike Seeger, Dirk Powell and Mark Graham.
+
Patrick Sauber, Tom’s son, came essentially the same musical background as his dad. He’s one of those astounding multi-instrumentalists who feels at home on the 5-string as he does on the mandolin and guitar. Patrick works occasionally with Laurie Lewis, the Bladerunners and now with Loafer’s Glory, adding a punch musically and vocally that everybody is talking about. Patrick will definitely leave his mark on the acoustic music scene for years to come.
+
Bill Bryson, over the past 40 odd years, has loaned his talents to some of the best bands in the business. He’s not only a great upright bass player, but also an accomplished old time banjo player and an amazing singer/songwriter. Oh. He’s pretty funny too. Bill has recorded and DOES record with a lot of great talents that need his specialties.
+
Herb Pedersen has been involved with bands like The Dillards, The Country Gazette, Old & In The Grey, Chris Hillman with Tony & Larry Rice, Here Today, and Vern & Ray. He also played with The Foggy Mountain Boys for a time, subbing for Earl Scruggs back in the late 60s. Herb also writes an occasional tune when needed, and has done his share of studio recording with other artists.
+
Park free across the street at Pickwick Bowl. Venue serves good Mexican food & has full bar.
+
No cover! (And yes, for this show, that deserves an exclamation point.)
