Our #2 News Feature …
.
BLUEGRASS FESTIVAL PRODUCER DON TUCKER: GONE SUDDENLY & TOO SOON
.
Surprise, sorrow, gratitude of many he helped, mark news of his death; services are Monday
.
.
DON TUCKER was a man with a mighty imagination and an incredible talent for bringing thousands of people together to live out the visions dancing in his head. He had a fierce love and passion in his heart. He held onto it until his last breath on October 15. He held a love not only for his family and friends, but also for CALICO GHOST TOWN in the Mojave Desert -- where he brought his first themed event to life – and for “his baby,” the HUCK FINN JUBILEE.
.
The annual “HUCK FINN JUBLIEE” has repeatedly won top honors among American music festivals and as a nationally-rated top family event. Festival goers could even take a hot air balloon ride, enjoy the Route 66 Car Show, the California State Arm Wrestling Championships, and a variety of fun Mark Twain-style competitions, like raft building. Don was a genius who saw that inviting the Arm-Wrestling Championships to the Jubilee insured bigger crowds for both, and additional funding for booking top music acts. And everything he did was done well, with class and personal commitment to quality and maintaining good feelings and smiles all around.
.
The Guide's editor was privileged to know Don and bring news every year to our readers as he assembled dazzling line-ups for the "HUCK FINN JUBILEE" and added new dimensions.
+
Don and his wife Barbara booked many of the biggest stars in bluegrass and acoustic roots americana. Their warm and friendly natures made countless musicians their friends. It is certain that many prominent folks from the music world will be sending messages to Don's family and mourning publicly with their (and his) fans.
.
Don loved looking into the audience so he could take in all of the laughter, smiles and lasting memories that were being created at his events. He was always excited to help others that were eager to set out on an event producers path and offered as much advice and guidance as he could. Their successes made him proud. "Don was my partner and best friend for 36 years," said Tucker's wife Barbara. "He was a wonderful and giving person that everyone loved and admired."
.
His self-penned bio simply reads, "400 festivals and 4 million folks who enjoyed attending them."
.
In the Monday edition of the Acoustic Americana Music Guide, we reported that Don Tucker had suffered a severe stroke. On Tuesday, we had the sad duty to report his death.
.
Andy Gates, father of mandolin wunderkind Scott Gates and longtime friend, was among the first to break the news to the web communities on Tuesday:
+
"Sad to report but Huck Finn promoter Don Tucker passed away this morning from the effects of the massive stroke he suffered several days ago.
+
"Prayers go out to his lovely wife Barb and their children Brian and Bree.
+
"Don was an amazing wonderful man and was loved by all who met him. He will be sorely missed by all of us who called him friend.
+
"That is truly the measure of a man, how you are remembered and Don has no worries when it comes to that." -- Andy Gates
.
.
Andy and his wife Mimi added, "God bless you Don, you have been a dear friend. Heaven is going to have one heck of a festival. All our love and Prayers go out to the Tucker Family."
.
.
The entire Gates family has enjoyed a special relationship with Don and Barbara Tucker. The Huck Finn audience watched Scott Gates grow-up from his pre-teen years, with his performances at each year's festival. It's where the Guide first heard and met Scott and his parents. It's where 17-year-old Scott sat-in with the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band, and where, at age 19, Scott introduced his stellar ensemble, Salty Suites.
+
Scott's farewell to Don reads simply, "Thank you, ol pal. For everything. We all love you so much."
.
.
Here are a few additional quotes from Don's Facebook wall, offering some sense of his influence and how much he will be missed:
.
.
"To the Tucker family - Karyn and I are so sorry for your loss. Don was a great person with a good heart and soul. I am sure that Bluegrass was only a small example of what he truly loved and put his work into. Together with all of you and his friends, he put the chaotic world on hold for all of us for one amazing weekend every year. Words cannot describe what a retreat it is to come to Huck Finn and just enjoy the music, the setting and Don's smile & handshake. I can only imagine what the rest of the year was like having him as a husband and father. But I do know what it's like to call him a friend. All of us are fortunate to have that privilege... we will miss him." -- Mark Miracle.
.
.
"When I was a little kid growing up in Southern California, the Huck Finn Jubilee was always the highlight of my summer. I looked forward to that festival all year long. I remember sitting in class and wishing I was putting on my 'Huck Finn' costume and preparing for the bluegrass festival.
+
"Don... you put on wonderful events and always supported my career in bluegrass music. You were a true friend to me, and for that I am glad I knew you. Thank you for you generosity. I will miss you." -- Danny Hootenanny Clark.
.
.
Sondra Sondi Baker, whose L&S Promotions produces a number of bluegrass festivals in two states, wrote, "We are at a complete loss for words. A GREAT man who taught us so much about the Festival business. Also a TRUE friend. Barb, Bree & Brian, you will forever be in our prayers. RIP, our friend."
.
.
The Acoustic Americana Music Guide shares in the grief and profound sense of loss, and we join so many others in the inadequate expression of sympathy for Don's family.
.
Don Tucker is survived not only by his best friend and loving cheerleader of 36 years, his wife Barbara, and his adoring children Brian and Breana (Bree); Don leaves brothers and sisters and two generations of nieces and nephews.
.
For those who knew him, services and a celebration of his life are Monday, October 22 in Riverside. Complete service information should soon be available at www.CelebrateDONTUCKER.com.

+
Lots of people can bring you retrospectives of big hits that defined an era. This show is different, distinguished from others because its performers personally played roles in the events they discuss and the songs they sing. It’s a thoroughly enjoyable education and tuneful celebration of the music of an era like no other in music.
+
BARRY McGUIRE stepped into the public eye in 1963 on TV’s “Andy Williams Show” as the gravelly-voiced lead singer of the NEW CHRISTY MINSTRELS. His musical career began with the million-sellers "Green, Green" and "Green Back Dollar."

In 1965, at the heart of the peace movement, McGuire went solo. His growing awareness of social hypocrisy was expressed in his third hit "Eve of Destruction" which echoed around the world as an anthem of the times. Three years later, Barry was cast as the male lead in the original Broadway production of the musical "HAIR." Once again his voice was heard proclaiming the ideals of a radical generation. Dick Clark once said, “When world events collide with “Rock & Roll, you get Barry McGuire.”
+
Currently working with Barry in "Trippin' The Sixties" is JOHN YORK.
+
JOHN YORK is best known for his work as a member of the world-renowned folk rock / country rock group, THE BYRDS. His vocal and instrumental talents have kept him in the company of such musical luminaries as ROGER MCGUINN, GENE CLARK, CLARENCE WHITE, NICKY HOPKINS, MAC REBENACK (DR. JOHN), DOUG SAHM (THE SIR DOUGLAS QUINTET), THE MAMAS AND PAPAS, JOHNNY RIVERS, LIGHTNIN’ HOPKINS, RICK DANKO & RICHARD MANUEL (THE BAND)……and many others. The TV show “The Place Where I Am Dreaming” featured John’s artistic collaboration with his wife, artist SUMI FOLEY. Recently, John has composed and recorded music for the lyrics of KIM FOWLEY on "West Coast Revelation." The duet "Redneck Ninja" highlights John's creative partnership with acclaimed songwriter PATRICK BRAYER. In 2007, John played concerts in Japan for the third time.

Thu, Oct 18:
8 pm WILL RYAN & THE CACTUS COUNTY COWBOYS, truly L.A.’s BEST unknown acoustic band, play the Talking Stick, 1411 Lincoln Bl, Venice 90291; 310-450-6052.
+
Aside from the fact that they often engage unique guests, this is absolutely the best uncelebrated band in L.A., hands down and period. They’re exquisitely musical and a whole lotta fun, a fine mix of male and female talent on stage, with plenty of understated antics and shenanigans. WILL RYAN is “Hollywood’s Official Singing Cowboy,” and even before that, he held the same honor in Burbank.
+
But don’t let any of the “cowboy” part scare you off. Sure, their repertoire of originals sounds a lot like the music from the best 1930s-era music-steeped films, with such splendid numbers as “Rhythm Rides the Range.” But then they’ll serve-up a song like “Ding Dong Daddy of Abu Dhabi,” with its subtext of oil addiction and how the super-rich treat it all like a poker game, and the band’s depth and Ryan’s songwriting shine brightly.
+
And what other ostensibly “western” band has an uber-talented multi-instrumentalist young woman in the form of CHLOE FEORANZANO, who plays clarinet, saxophone and mandolin, all in the same song? Plus, they have CACTUS KATIE CAVERA, an in-demand player in the big band jazz world.
+
The band’s fiddler / violinist, BENNY BRYDERN, aka BENEDIKT BRYDERN, spends parts of his summers conducting symphony orchestras in Europe, sometimes leading them in his own compositions.
+
Add to that their adjunct member, GRAMMY-winner IAN WHITCOMB, and you should begin to comprehend why you really need to see them.

Fri, Oct 19 a "SHOW-of-the-WEEK" pick:
8 pm STEPHANIE BETTMAN & LUKE HALPIN bring their multiple-award-winning rootsy fiddle-based-folk music to Alva’s Showroom, 1417 W 8th St, San Pedro 90732; 310-519 1314.
+
“That Stephanie Bettman has reached a level comparable to others like Emmylou Harris, Joan Baez and Alison Krauss so quickly it’s a bit uncanny.” – Country Jukebox, Germany.
+
“Bettman jams it up like few others as she leads an ensemble with great imagination.” – Maverick Magazine, UK.
+
STEPHANIE BETTMAN is a singer-songwriter-fiddler extraordinaire who generates buzz in bluegrass-country circles. There have been inevitable comparisons to Alison Krauss and Emmylou Harris. Named by the Guide’s editor in Folkworks Magazine as one of L.A.’s top ten Female Singer Songwriters (before the duo’s move to Colorado), Stephanie’s songs are sometimes sad, sometimes sassy but always stunning.
+
LUKE HALPIN, her multi-instrumentalist partner and veteran recording session player, is a wonderful talent in his own right, instrumentally and vocally. Inspired by the likes of Sam Bush, Tony Rice, and Mark O’Conner, Luke’s perfectly blended harmonies and his instrumental expertise together with Stephanie’s artistry and performance make for a dynamic entertaining experience.
+
Together, Stephanie and Luke have been winners in many local and national competitions, including:
+
* Grand Prize Winners in the 2008 So Cal Live Acoustic Music Competition.
* Winners in the 2007 Topanga Banjo / Fiddle contest.

Fri, Oct 19, a "SHOW-of-the-WEEK" pick:
8 pm WHITE FORT and MARINA V share the bill at the Coffee Gallery Backstage, 2029 N Lake Av, Altadena 91001; reservations 626-798-6236 (10 am-10 pm); venue phone 626-398-7917; info www.coffeegallery.com. (“The venue named by The Guide’s editor, writing in FolkWorks, as L.A.’s best intimate acoustic listening room venue.”)
+
It’s an all-Russian show tonight, but don’t worry, lyrics and stage banter are in English. Venue impresario BOB STANE does caution, “Vodka will not be served.”
+
Two of Russia's most beloved musicians, WHITE FORT originally hails from Irkutsk, Siberia. Growing up within marching distance of 5 different gulags, the boys spent many long, dark, Soviet winters with nothing to do but practice, practice, practice. The result: Russian bossa nova: a smokin' hot mix of rock, folk, and classical music, propelled by a Russian ethnic pulse and rocket fuel. Artyom and Yuriy grew up in what was still the Soviet Union, and began studying classical music in grade school. The Iron Curtain couldn't hold out rock and roll, though, and soon Jimi Hendrix and the Beatles were sharing a gallon of vodka with Mozart and Tchaikovsky.
+
The duo hopped on the Trans-Siberian Railroad in 1986 to take their act on the road--and promptly won "Best New Band" at a national festival. When they returned home, however, they faced suspension from college--shame on them for playing "rock" and "jazz," and in PUBLIC, nonetheless!
+
The boys have come a long way from the steppes, with a dozen albums and numerous international awards over their 25-year career. They've toured worldwide, from the trance clubs of Ibiza to NYC's Lincoln Center. They took First Place in the Instrumental Music Category in Nashville's 2011 International Songwriting Competition. According to MTV producer Maty Fernandez, "These two guys do what it takes Dave Matthews five guys to do."
+
"A stunning new fusion between cultures and idioms.... with their dazzling unisons, the TWO SIBERIANS bring depth, virtuosity and great melodies to a new place." Bill Milkowski / Rolling Stone music critic. "With an original sound, great tunes, complete command over their instruments - and seemingly propelled by rocket fuel." Eight-time GRAMMY winner Michael Brecker.
+
"I was awestruck. Everyone was awestruck." GRAMMY winning producer Russ Titelman. "Original and fresh and with an improbable broad appeal, I have not seen or heard anything quite like this. It's amazing how much energy comes from these two guys. I booked them in a heartbeat." Dan Melnick / Absolutely Live.
+
Sharing the evening is a Guide favorite, Russian expatriate MARINA V.
+
MARINA V is an award-winning recording artist with a "hauntingly beautiful" voice (L.A. Times), whose "melodic and passionate music" (The Washington Post) has been influenced by the Beatles, Tchaikovsky and Tori Amos. Born in Moscow, Marina came to America at age 15 to pursue her version of the American Dream. Since then, she has been relentlessly touring and has blossomed into the international artist she is today.
+
She’s played over 600 shows worldwide from The Kodak Theatre in Hollywood to the American Embassy in Moscow to clubs as widespread as Sydney and Paris. Marina recently raised $30,000 from her loyal fans to record her new album, “MY STAR,” which was produced by Guy Erez (Gypsy Kings) and features guest musicians from KISS and Collective Soul. Marina's songs have appeared in films, TV shows, ads and games, and she recently won a coveted award from SIR BOB GELDOF in London. Plenty of good reading and tunes to hear at www.MarinaV.com.
+
Tix, $15, and that’s far less than it costs to see either one of these acts in most of the world.

A guitarist with an upbeat, finger-poppin' picking style, he learned at the elbows of bluesmasters Sam 'Lightnin' Hopkins, Mance Lipscomb, Mississippi Fred MacDowell, and others. Yet, Bernie Pearl is no hidebound traditionalist. As music critics and aficionados have said for years, he is a craftsman who packs his songs with melodic interpretations that are new and personal each time he picks up his vintage Martin or National. To hear him tell it, "I'm not a retro player. I'm playing real blues for right now."

Formed in the early 1990’s and led by Cuban American frontman Raul Malo, the band carved its own brand of music on the American music landscape with a melting pot of music styles. Mariachi, Tejano, rock, pop, Cubano tinges and even touches of rockabilly are all wrapped in country-flavored tones to create the group’s unique and indelible sound.

8 pm KELLY JOE PHELPS plays McCabe’s, 3101 Pico Bl, Santa Monica 90405; 310-828-4497.
+
Tonight, it's the great Kelly Joe Phelps. After a considerable absence, he has returned to the slide guitar, of which he is considered to be the modern day master. Since his debut album, "Lead Me On," came out in 1994, the Pacific Northwest-based singer and songwriter has written and performed some of the most compelling slide guitar based music ever recorded. Though he spent his early years playing free jazz, he has never strayed far from the roots music that has become his passion. His latest album (his tenth) is "Brother Sinner And The Whale," a solo record that builds on all of his lyrical, compositional and technical strengths to form the best album of his career, and to redefine who Kelly Joe Phelps is as an artist.

Sat, Oct 20, a "SHOW-of-the-WEEK" pick:
7 pm JIM KWESKIN, the guy who brought the jug band back, plays the Coffee Gallery Backstage, 2029 N Lake Av, Altadena 91001; reservations 626-798-6236 (10 am-10 pm); venue phone 626-398-7917; info www.coffeegallery.com. (“The venue named by The Guide’s editor, writing in FolkWorks, as L.A.’s best intimate acoustic listening room venue.”)
+
He is founding member and namesake of the influential JIM KWESKIN JUG BAND, which dates to the ’60s and featured the legendary FRITZ RICHMOND and a young GEOFF & MARIA MULDAUR. On his own, he’s formidable, with a huge catalog of folk favorites.
+
JIM KWESKIN does a rare appearance at The Coffee Gallery Backstage. Jim always brings an array of talented musicians with him. Tonight’s band is Jim Kweskin on vocals, guitar & banjo; Benny Brydern on fiddle; Daniel Mark on mandolin; Matt Berlin on bass.
+
Bringing his unique blend of folk, pop, ragtime, swing and old-time country, Jim treats ears and toes to a superlative selection of wonderful tunes from the Great American Roots Songbook.
+
THE JIM KWESKIN JUG BAND, famed 1960s folk revival heroes with many appearances on national television, parlayed their good-time music at venues from coffeehouses and folk festivals to the psychedelic ballrooms of San Francisco. Jim led the band on guitar and vocals. They are regarded in some circles as the original “Americana” band. They perfectly captured the 1960s mix of exuberant anarchy and heartfelt sincerity. No other group attained their unique blend of youthful energy and antiquarian expertise, tight musicianship, loose camaraderie, and infectious swing. Jim Kweskin created one of the bedrock guitar styles of the folk revival, adapting the ragtime-blues finger-picking of artists like Mississippi John Hurt and Pink Anderson to the more complex chords of pop and jazz. Jim continues to maintain a remarkably consistent musical vision since his jug band days.

4 pm WHITE FORT, the globally-acclaimed duo from Russia, plays early at Alva’s Showroom, 1417 West 8th St, San Pedro 90732; 310-519 1314.
+
This duo brings two of Russia's most beloved musicians. WHITE FORT originally hails from Irkutsk, Siberia.
+
"A stunning new fusion between cultures and idioms.... with their dazzling unisons, the TWO SIBERIANS bring depth, virtuosity and great melodies to a new place." Sun, Oct 21, a "SHOW-of-the-WEEK" pick:
7 pm STEPHANIE BETTMAN & LUKE HALPIN bring their multiple-award-winning rootsy fiddle-based-folk music to Neighborhood Church, 301 N Orange Grove Bl, Pasadena 91103; 626-449-3470.
* Folk Works Top Ten Los Angeles based female singer-songwriters of 2008 (named by the Guide’s editor).
* Music Connection’s Top Twenty-Five New Music Critiques of 2008.

7 pm ROBBIE FULKS plays McCabe’s, 3101 Pico Bl, Santa Monica 90405; 310-828-4497.
+
McCabe's booker Lincoln Myerson says, "We welcome back the angel-voiced, potty mouthed country stylings of Robbie Fulks. Alt-country sure is an overused musical term these days, but when it comes to Robbie Fulks, there isn't a more appropriate descriptor."
+
He continues, "Wth vocal and musical chops that would rival the finest honky-tonker, Fulks' biting, often hilarious skewering of mainstream Nashville has forever placed him outside of the traditional country music spotlight. That's their loss, for in our opinion, Fulks is one of the finest songwriters and performers out there. Tonight you can expect some superlative pickin' and grinnin', improvised songs, some surprising covers, and a lot of pure (alt) country from a master of the genre."
+
Another amazing songwriter, one who hasn't been at McCabe's in quite a while -- GREG TROOPER -- opens the show.

+
Wow. Her latest CD, "Let The Storm Roll In," self-penned and self-produced, shot up to #1 on the Roots Country Chart, #8 on the Folk DJ Chart, and # 26 on the Roots Music Americana Chart. It landed in the Folk Chart's top 100 CDs of 2011, with EVERY song on the CD receiving airplay. "Big Country," the first track on the recording, was added to the inflight playlist aboard Lufthansa Airlines.
+
Americana singer-songwriter CLAUDIA NYGAARD is a born storyteller with a quick wit, a fearless emotional vulnerability, and an affable connection with an audience. With a voice described by Rich Warren of WFMT as “amber honey”, Claudia has performed at over 200 fairs and festivals and was chosen an emerging artist at the Falcon Ridge Folk Festival in 2009. Guitar, string, and tuner endorsements from merchandisers attest to her strength as a musician.
+
Nygaard is a former Nashville Music Row staff songwriter, and her songs - with their passionate melodies and descriptive lyrics, have won numerous awards including the coveted Kerrville Folk Festival “New Folk” song competition. The press has been equally excited about the recording, giving it incredible reviews, including 5 stars from roots music's “Maverick Magazine" in the UK.
+
Have a look at some of her REVIEWS:
+
"Stunning! The whole disc is a sheer delight... this is exceptionally good." FIVE out of five stars! Maverick Magazine
+
“Claudia Nygaard’s music invitingly straddles the fence between country and folk with a band sound that is decidedly unplugged and artfully laid-back in support of her sensually lyrical alto. And then, there’s the matter of her songs-- that rival the likes of Guy Clark or Ian Tyson in their plainspoken, memoir-like quality, rich with personalized images and a resonant point-of-view.” Gary Von Tersch, Sing Out Magazine.
+
"The immigration saga that accompanies “Big Country” and the naiveté of youth recalled in “J.C.” are relayed from both a tender and touching perspective. Yet Nygaard’s also got a scrappy side to her as well. Her sympathetic homage to Miss Kitty of TV’s “Gunsmoke” fame is absolutely hilarious and her plea to a reticent lover in the song simply titled “Say It” conveys both desperation and desire without resorting to self-pity. Nygaard is a knowing soul and Let The Storm Roll In offers a torrent of wisdom and reflection." Lee Zimmerman, No Depression
“Nothing short of amazing… Comprised of a dozen equally excellent tunes, “Let The Storm Roll In” reveals Nygaard to be one of Americana music’s hidden gems.” Jeffrey Sisk, In Tune, The Daily News.
+
"Self-produced, with hand-selected songs from her vast catalog, Nygaard may have quite accidentally created and released one of the finest singer/songwriter/storyteller collections in recent memory." Wildy Haskell, Wildy's World.
+
"In her throw-back-to-the-50s, rich-toned alto, the artist tells story after honest story, making listeners chuckle, choke back tears, and sometimes just nod their heads while her well-crafted pieces wash over them.” Janet Goodman, Music News Nashville.

Thu Oct 25, a "SHOW-of-the-WEEK" pick:
7 pm monthly “AMERICANA MUSIC CIRCLE” brings DAVID SERBY, TOM KELL, and performing hosts THE LAUREN ADAMS BAND, one of L.A.’s very best Americana outfits. It’s at Genghis Cohen, 740 N Fairfax Av, L.A. 90046; www.genghiscohen.com; 323-653-0640.
+
"LAUREN ADAMS BAND is an all-star outfit, from superb songwriter / band leader LAUREN ADAMS to PHIL PARLAPIANO on keys and accordion and MARK “POCKET” GOLDBERG on bass. This is easily one of L.A.’s top ten electric Americana bands, and Lauren’s originals should be hit songs. Their rendition of ERNEST TROOST’S “Evangeline” with Lauren’s vocals is powerful and compelling and very different from the classic blues ballad delivery that Ernest gives it. Lauren’s song “Thirsty,” title track to one of her albums, evokes lost country & western, from a time before Nashville lost the western part and turned it all into dysfunctional relationship, red-state-trailer-park rock. Each band member got a featured song, since all are singer-songwriters with solo albums and dozens of credits on records by big names. Be sure to catch LAUREN ADAMS when she performs in town, or at her monthly “Americana Music Circle” showcase at Genghis Cohen in Los Angeles." -- Acoustic Americana Music Guide

Thank you thank you for adding all the listings of music performance and music documentaries on tv! With both health and financial challenges it is not so easy for me to get out much. I upped my cable to get Palladia because you were listing so much that's on it. Right now I'm watching the movie IN THE SHADOW OF MOTOWN and Joan Osborne just sang HEAT WAVE! It is on a channel called Sundance that I must have got with Paladia. I only went looking for it because you listed it! So I had to write to say thank you for this enjoyable Saturday afternoon and for all the things you write about. I don't know how you do it but keep it up! Chris
