Weekend, chockfull! Acoustic Americana Music Guide, Oct 13 & 14, 2012

.
There are soooo many fine options this weekend! We had to scramble to get this edition completed for you, owing to an event at the airport. (No, TSA didn’t feel us up and confiscate our shampoo. This time it was different.) The editor experienced an aircraft evacuation on the runway, after a near takeoff was aborted due to smoke in the cabin. From high-speed full-throttle to reverse thrust and “whoa!” and get ’er stopped before we ran out of runway, then half the passengers sliding off the back of the wing… If you’re reading this on your mobile device, take a moment to click “view full web version” near the bottom of the page, and see the photo. (Or if you’re on the main site, you already see it, at left.)
+
FYI… the picture from ARTPRIZE in Grand Rapids, Michigan, which was briefly our page one pic, will return, after we run the aircraft evac photo for a few more days.

2) FESTIVALS today / this weekend…
.
Excellent FESTIVALS happen this weekend. Some run all weekend, some are SUNDAY ONLY, so remember to check both days’ listings…
.
Sat & Sun, Oct 13 & 14, FESTIVAL, in Ventura, a “SHOW-of-the-WEEK” pick:
9 am-5 pm 10th annual “SEASIDE HIGHLAND GAMES” at the Ventura Co Fairgrounds, 10 W Harbor Bl, Ventura, brings multiple stages of Celtic and Irish music, plus the full array of Scottish Highland Heavy Athletics, authentic Scottish and British Isle food, massed pipe bands, gathering of the clans and tartans, and more culture and fun. Yes, you can eat haggis. And meat pies and other tasty strange edibles.
+
Performers include THE BROWNE SISTERS & GEORGE CAVANAUGH, CELTIC SPRING, BROTHER, HIGHLAND WAY, and JOHN McLEAN ALLAN & STAND EASY. It’s far more traditional this year, far less Celtic Rock-oriented.
+
Plus there is the F.I.R.E.-sanctioned SCOTTISH FIDDLE COMPETITION, lots of fun to watch.
+
The Guide loves this event for the music and the “Large men throwing stuff” and women do that, too. If you’ve never seen someone lift, run with, and throw a telephone pole end-over-end, it is as logic-defying as it sounds. That’s part of the reason these are called Games, and not Festival.
+
This is the first decade celebration, and they’ll try to make an already special event more special. The FIRST DIVISION MARINE CORPS BAND will perform to help celebrate (their march patterns are fun to watch). Altogether, it’s a massive and fun presence for all the kilts and pipes and drums, with excellent stage performances. You can ride Amtrak from San Diego, OC, L.A., and the SFV to the entrance gate. Check their website, www.seaside-games.com.
.

+
It’s the final ShobeFest, to honor the memory of the irrepressible MIKE SHOBE. Laurie Lewis says, “He lived life more quickly than most of us, and fit a lot of music and good times into fewer years. We miss him.”
+
In addition to the info you’ll find on their website, they tell attendees, “No dogs please.”

For three decades, Grammy Award-winning musician TERRANCE SIMIEN has been sharing his zydeco roots music through performances in over 7,000 concerts in 45 different countries. Zydeco is the indigenous music of the French-speaking Creoles of south central and southwest Louisiana. Terrance is an 8th generation Louisiana Creole, a term which describes the multicultural and multiracial African Americans whose heritage is a rich tapestry of African, French, Spanish and Native American ancestry.

(“The venue named by The Guide’s editor, writing in FolkWorks, as L.A.’s best intimate acoustic listening room venue.”)
+
The CACHE VALLEY DRIFTERS have been performing their music together for over 35 years and were the original back-up band for legendary folk artist KATE WOLF. The band is original founding member BILL GRIFFIN (mandolin, guitar and vocals, since 1972), bass player and singer WALLY BARNICK (since 1975) and guitarist and mandolin player MIKE MULLINS, a pal since the early ’70s and band member since 1992. They perform a wide range of material from folk to bluegrass to acoustic renditions of rock tunes and originals. While this description is directionally adequate, it is certainly far from complete. For starters, it fails to mention that these guys are a rare commodity; entertainers who are funny without ever trying to be. And secondly, now that Bill Griffin has moved to Hawaii, the band books but one (maybe two) California tours a year. They have become a mainstay at KCBX’s “LIVE OAK MUSIC FESTIVAL” and can be enjoyed each Father’s Day morning at the “Hot Licks Café” during that festival at Live Oak Camp. But it isn’t easy to find them playing an intimate venue with great sound. Tix, $20.

.
Sat, Oct 13, a “SHOW-of-the-WEEK” pick:
7-10 pm monthly “GRASSROOTS ACOUSTICA” this time brings a “BENEFIT CONCERT FOR FAR-WEST FOLK ALLIANCE,” with performances by RONSTADT GENERATIONS, SUGAR IN THE GOURD, RANCHERS FOR PEACE, LAUREN ADAMS, DALE LaDUKE, KEVIN FISHER, LARRY JOHN McNALLY, LOIS BLAISCH, and performing host MARK ISLAM, at The Talking Stick,
+
Yes, RONSTADT GENERATIONS is THOSE Ronstadts. And RANCHERS FOR PEACE impressed the crowd at this year’s “Live Oak Music Festival.” And LOIS BLAISCH wrote a multi-platinum selling song. And we’ll offer more on another of the bands playing this benefit:
+
“LAUREN ADAMS BAND This is an all-star outfit, from superb songwriter / band leader LAUREN ADAMS to PHIL PARLAPIANO on keys and accordion and MARK “POCKET” GOLDBERG on bass. This is easily one of L.A.’s top ten electric Americana bands, and Lauren’s originals should be hit songs. Their rendition of ERNEST TROOST’S “Evangeline” with Lauren’s vocals is powerful and compelling and very different from the classic blues ballad delivery that Ernest gives it. Lauren’s song “Thirsty,” title track to one of her albums, evokes lost country & western, from a time before Nashville lost the western part and turned it all into dysfunctional relationship, red-state-trailer-park rock. Each band member got a featured song, since all are singer-songwriters with solo albums and dozens of credits on records by big names. Be sure to catch LAUREN ADAMS when she performs in town, or at her monthly “Americana Music Circle” showcase at Genghis Cohen in Los Angeles." — Acoustic Americana Music Guide.

1) On TV today / tonight…
.
EARLY Sun, Oct 14, on the radio:
6-10 am “BLUEGRASS ETC,” L.A.’s last surviving bluegrass and old time string band radio show, has always been one of the best anywhere; producer & host FRANK HOPPE sometimes has guests performing live (yes, at those early hours), and always treats listeners to something from his obscure collection of early recordings (Edison wax cylinders included). On KCSN, broadcast where you can get the signal, and web simulcast everywhere.
.
~`~`~`~`~`~`~`~`~`~`~`~`~`~

Sun, Oct 14, on TV, not music, but cool:
2-3 pm “SIERRA #3 LOCOMOTIVE: REBORN” chronicles the restoration of the 19th-century steam locomotive that costarred in dozens of iconic westerns, including “The Virginian,” “High Noon,” and “Unforgiven.” For some of us, the steam whistle and brass bell are music enough… A new 2012 production. First of two steam train specials this afternoon (also see 3 pm) on KOCE, aka PBS SoCal.
.
+=+
.
Sun, Oct 14, on TV, not music, but cool:
3-4 pm “DAYLIGHT: MOST BEAUTIFUL TRAIN” chronicles the history of Southern Pacific’s red-orange-silver-and-black streamlined passenger train, the “Daylight,” which operated from 1937-1971. For the first twenty or so of those years, it ran substantially faster than Amtrak is allowed to run today, and it did it behind streamlined steam locomotives. This documentary was made in 2005. This is not a music show, but the storied and fabled train has been the subject of plenty of songs over many years. For some of us, the steam whistle and brass bell are music enough… Second of two steam train specials this afternoon (also see 2 pm) on KOCE, aka PBS SoCal.
.
+=+
.
Sun, Oct 14, on TV:

A 2004 production. On KOCE, aka PBS SoCal. (Also see the 11 pm listing for KOCE.)
.

.
Sun, Oct 14, on TV, not music, but cool:
10-11 pm “MOYERS & COMPANY” brings a new 2012 episode that discusses the politicization of climate change in the face of rapidly melting glaciers in Switzerland, Greenland, Iceland, and Alaska, with beautiful and alarming photos by nature photographer James Balog. 2) FESTIVALS today / this weekend…
.
Excellent FESTIVALS happen this weekend. Some run all weekend, some just today…
.
Sun only, Oct 14, FESTIVAL, in Santa Barbara Co,
a “SHOW-of-the-WEEK” pick:
Annual “SANTA BARBARA OLD TIME FIDDLERS CONVENTION” is a delight, with music on two stages including sets by the CACHE VALLEY DRIFTERS, LAURIE LEWIS & THE RIGHT HANDS, MODAL TEASE, KALINKA, and the Quebecois band GENTICORUM, at Rancho La Patera & the Historic Stowe House, 304 N Los Carneros Rd, Goleta 93117; 805-681-7216.
+
Main stage schedule:
11 am-noon KALINKA plays klezmer, Gypsy tunes, vintage jazz & French café
Noon-1 pm MODAL TEASE plays Old-Time string band music
2:30-3:30 pm CACHE VALLEY DRIFTERS and their beyond-bluegrass
3:30-4:30 pm GENTICORUM brings Quebecois fiddle-based music from French Canada
4:30-5:30 pm LAURIE LEWIS & THE RIGHT HANDS play old-time and bluegrass
+
LAURIE LEWIS is legendary, and her band includes Southern California’s PATRICK SAUBER.
But these days, it isn’t easy to find them playing elsewhere in these parts. Tix, $20.

Sun, Oct 14; Sat & Sun, FESTIVAL, Oct 13 & 14, in Ventura,
