GUIDE Extra Edition: Events for TUESDAY, October 2, 2012 only

.
Here’s a short EXTRA edition of the Acoustic Americana Music Guide with updates of what’s happening TODAY & TONIGHT ONLY. First, a note on the significance of this date.
.
==========
.
A DECADE AGO, AND THE CHALLENGE OF NOW
.
Ten years ago today, Congress authorized the Bush Administration to go to war against Iraq. There was widespread support for it, based on reasons that all turned out to be falsehoods. Only a few members of Congress questioned the Administration’s veracity. Among them was Dennis Kucinich of Ohio. In addition to a detailed, ten-point examination and refutation of the reasons for going to war, he added, "There is another America out there ready to be called forward." He continued, "It is the America of our dreams. It is the America of the flag full of stars. It is the America which is in our heart. And we can make it the heart of the world."
.
Today, Kucinich remembered that day and released a statement with that hope of a decade ago.
.
Today, the Guide’s editor replied to a “priorities survey” from California Congressman Adam Schiff.
.
The editor was thinking beyond the problems and rancor that plague Washington. He was thinking about that same America of our dreams, which too often seems lost.
.
He told Schiff, “Let's re-start the space program. We hear calls for rejuvenating our slipping math and science education, but there are no jobs for those graduates. Millions went out to see the final flights of the space shuttles, piggybacked atop the 747 carrier planes. JPL is scoring successes, robotically, on Mars. There IS public interest and it should be galvanized with LEADERSHIP. Let's get serious again. Let's send people to Mars, and to the oceanic moons of Jupiter and Saturn (Europa, alone, has more liquid water than exists on all of Earth, beneath its icy crust). We can start with robotic spacecraft / submarines, and follow ambitiously with astronaut explorers. After the rip-offs of financial crises and 1%-ers getting richer while austerity is preached to the rest of us, we need to distinguish ourselves and our times with something better that the future will remember. We are failing to do that now. We can. Interest rates are at record lows, so issue bonds while the money is cheap. Let's GO!”
.
[THIS JUST IN: NASA will host a media teleconference at 11 am PDT (2 pm EDT) on Thursday, Oct 4, to provide a status update on the Curiosity rover's mission to Mars' Gale Crater. Curiosity, also known as the Mars Science Laboratory, is 56 days into a two-year mission to investigate whether conditions may have been favorable for microbial life. Audio and visuals of the event will be streamed live online at www.nasa.gov/newsaudio and www.ustream.tv/nasajpl ]

TWELVE-time Grammy Award-winning singer-songwriter EMMYLOU HARRIS has reinvented her music time and time again. Born in Alabama, raised in Virginia, a longtime resident of California, and then of Nashville, her music is what country should be, an integral part of contemporary folk, pioneering acoustic (and electric) rockabilly, and part honky-tonk. Emmylou has covered it all and then some. Long known as a master interpreter of others’ songs, both her covers and her originals add her determined, resonant voice to the mix. And in ensemble collaborations and bands, she’s sang with everyone from Gram Parsons to Roy Orbison to Dolly Parton to Gillian Welch and Bright Eyes. In her latest incarnation, Emmylou has again ignited her immense capacity as songwriter. Her exquisite “Hard Bargain” CD from 2011 was one of only three albums on which she wrote the majority of the songs herself. Performing with her band of Nashville heavyweight producers PHIL MADEIRA and WILL KIMBROUGH, master fiddle and mandolin player RICKIE SIMPKINS, along with the always-in-lock-step rhythm section of CHRIS DONAHUE and BRYAN OWINGS -- her RED DIRT BOYS -- Emmylou always knocks it out of the park with a combination of songs, new and old.

GORDIE TENTREES has toured with FRED EAGLESMITH, KELLY JOE PHELPS, and RAY WYLIE HUBBARD. Solo, he is an international award-nominated artist from the Yukon. A multi-instrumental performing songwriter, Gordie delivers an energetic solo show. He’s partway through a 120-date world tour promoting his new album "North Country Heart." Tentries released his 5th album “North Country Heart” in early 2012 with tours in Canada, US, Europe, UK and Scandinavia. This former school teacher, breakdancer, and golden gloves boxer has toured from Newfoundland to Finland to Oklahoma and back again.
+
ROGER MARIN has invested years of touring the world non-stop with Canadian alt-country luminaries FRED EAGLESMITH and WILLIE P BENNETT, and working with acts such as WILLIE NELSON, ADAM CAROLL, JUNIOR BROWN, DEL McCOURY, HAYES CARLL and DELBERT McCLINTON. All that followed a youth spent accompanying his roaming country musician father and preparing his own path. Nowadays, his own distinctive voice delivers an honest, razor sharp sound that cuts through the manufactured pretense of commercial music.
