SATURDAY'S SPECIAL NON-MUSIC EVENT


The treasures of the S.S. Central America were so vast and rich that the entire U.S. economy went into a depression because the ship sank. The wreck lay undiscovered and undisturbed where it was sent to the bottom in a hurricane, a hundred miles off North Carolina. The ship had taken over 200 people with her to a watery grave -- but unlike "Titanic," there was never regard for the wreck being a place that could not be violated for treasure hunting.

And treasure hunting reached proportions that exceeded any Clive Cussler novel or Hollywood script. The guy who tapped the rich for money to grab the riches disappeared with what he could steal, and he remains a fugitive. But so much was still down there.

All those missing riches were in the darkness on the bottom of the ocean for nearly 160 years.

All you raiders of the lost shipwreck will remember our coverage of the excellent "Titanic" exhibition while it was at the Reagan Library. This isn't as extensive, but... just what's here, in this unique display of glittering gold, will make your eyes bulge. AND, this is a see-it-now-or-never-see-it proposition. Because all those rich investors want their payback with an outrageous profit margin.

The treasures were recovered in 2014 from the sea floor, more than a mile underwater, and had to undergo cleaning by conservators. Today in Long Beach, they are being displayed for sale to all the other ultra-rich. But we mere mortals can see them, too. But, this is the only time anyone can see all this together in one place before it's scattered into the vaults of the world, after the rich hoarders get it all:

Seriously, the sinking of the S.S. Central America didn't JUST cause an economic depression on the eve of the Civil War. It spread so much financial and governmental panic, and so much of the fear-based thinking that enables any war, that it loss of the greatest treasure ship in American history helped to CAUSE the Civil War.

And, with all that wealth from the California Gold Rush lying at the bottom of the sea, it elevated the importance of SILVER from the deep, steaming-hot mines of Virginia City, Nevada's Comstock Lode. (Which wasn't at all like "Bonanza.") Amidst the new (replacement) excitement, Nevada would become "The Silver State" and fly a state flag proclaiming "Battle Born," because it supplied the SILVER that would bring Union victory in the Civil War.

Had the S.S. Central America not sank, history would have been altogether different.

The recovered treasures from the shipwreck are at the Long Beach Expo (Long Beach Convention Center), as the centerpiece of a massive numismatics and coin show. You can ride the Metro Blue Line light rail to the end loop, and it's a short walk down Pine Avenue in downtown Long Beach.

The event closes SATURDAY at 5 pm, BUT THE S.S. CENTRAL AMERICA exhibit CLOSES AT 3 PM as items go to auction. We learned the last fact after we published. It's eight bucks to get in. More info (but not the full info) is at:

* MICHAEL FLEMING was raised at the foot of the Colorado Rockies. There, he developed a profound love for the West and its people, and that has compelled him to create music celebrating its culture. Live Music Update: Valentine's Day, & Armchair Olympians Edition. Feb 9 2018 an' onward

Late addition observation...

As we watch the coverage of the Olympics from South Korea (yes, that IS entirely too much TV), we can't help but notice something we aren't supposed to. That is, sponsors of the US Olympic Team have invested in expensive, special-effects-laden custom advertising on par with those overhyped Super Bowl commercials.

Some of these ads are just ridiculous. Like the world being told to celebrate the fittest of elite athletes by "Having a Coke." Yeah, just ignore that company's embrace of massively unhealthy amounts of high fructose corn syrup. Or for the "diet conscious," choose their beverages saturated with toxic fake sweeteners that make you hungrier. Plus, just ignore all the evidence that carbonic acid in the presence of phosphoric acid, in the concentrations present in soda pop, cause interference in the body's ability to process calcium, to the point it can be a factor in osteoporosis.

But it's another of the US-team-sponsoring advertisers that most requires an observation. That one has made several forms of cgi-supplemented cartoon-hero ads, mixing the athletes with dramatically-portrayed super-employees. the latter step-out of airplane restrooms after doing the Superman-phone-booth routine. Now, everyone old enough to remember phone booths knows that an on-board restroom is nowhere near as big, and it would be impossible for anyone other than Ant-Man or the Elastic Man to change clothes in there. Wonder Woman's flurry of spinning would blow the shoebox's walls out.

And that brings us to the serious question for that sponsor, United Airlines: Are you really the one that flew our athletes across the entire Pacific Ocean? Because if you are, how do you expect them to be able to compete? Really, now, if they had to endure the same conditions as the rest of us, didn't they risk phlebitis with their knees in their armpits for such an extended mashing with no leg room, and if you dare use them, tray tables so close they bisect the abdomen? Had we thought about it -- which we didn't, until we saw your expensive commercials -- we would have hoped that all the world's elite athletes were flying on Emirates, or some other non-US carrier that practices a modicum of civilized transportation and room for one's legs. Geez, being trapped on United Airlines across the whole ocean? The airline that we know is prone, on a whim, to throwing anyone overboard who has a paid seat so they can stuff somebody else in it who paid more? Our poor athletes!

Even if they avoid eviction, they must endure YOUR airline, for a trip halfway around the world, with nothing to eat but fifteen-dollar packages of crackers and fake cheese.

Of course, that other sponsor probably got around airport security to ply them with prodigious quantities of Coca-Cola. Seems like the "Olympic Athletes from Russia" who can't even display their flag or its colors aren't the only ones operating at a disadvantage.

Still, the spirit of the Games sure beats the hell out of the military-industrial-cybersecurity machine's grumbling about the two Koreas behaving with friendly cooperation.

If you're looking for things to do, you came to the right place. But this time 'round is, nevertheless, a lot less than we expected to bring you. Because this is an "events-only" edition, and we 'spected we'd be bringing you ALL the music news.

The word of the day is overwhelmed. This week, we have been inundated, beyond needing a snorkel. There have been waves and avalanches of news about new releases, special performances, tour announcements, artist collaborations, and waaay more than we can list here, or else we're back to being overwhelmed. Of course, all of us know that the singular obsessions of droning Big Corporate Media have no room for Folk-Americana and acoustic music, or much of any kind of arts and culture that isn't sheep-dipped in commercialism. Even when the real world is overflowing with good, homegrown music. Like now. So it's up to us in the indie and alternative and specialty media. After we dig out from under the avalanche.

SOOOO... our next big, huge, inclusive of all the news and tunes about everything-from-soup-to-nuts, MUSIC NEWS EDITION will be along soon. But not today. Despite the best intentions.

TODAY, the best we can do is make sure you don't miss anything that's impending. So we're opting to let you know about all our picks for the best music performances — in time to get tix to surprise your sweetie for VALENTINE'S DAY.

That takes care of including VALENTINE'S DAY in the title. Now for why we got away with including the OLYMPICS.

We know that O.A.S. — Olympic Addiction Syndrome — afflicts many of us. (Present company included.) So you need to be reminded to get tix, NOW, BEFORE THEY SELL-OUT, for a great concert, club gig, festival, or other event that tempts you away from, or happens on down the road after the conclusion of, The Games. You know, when half of Korea goes back to being portrayed as a boogeyman that needs attacking. It's coming, from the very same Big Media that's using joyful, world-at-peace, Olympic Addiction now to sell you soap. Or addictive prescription drugs. Or toxic-to-humans weed killer. Or junky food that clogs your arteries.

Thus, in the interests of both utility and sanity, we present OUR PICKS for options in the music and arts department. The "go forth, see, hear, tap-your-foot, smile, relax, get happily excited, hear a song that'll be your new favorite, see-and-be-seen-making-the-scene" department.

TODAY IS MARDI GRAS.

Laissez les bons temps rouler! (What does that ubiquitous French phrase mean? "Let the good times roll!")

MARDI GRAS, as you probably know, is French for “Fat Tuesday.“ Aside from the parades, partying, music and general revelry, it reflects the practice of an indulgent "last night" of eating richer foods and drinking too much before the ritual fasting and self-deprivation of the Lenten season. Lent begins the following day, with "Ash Wednesday," when tradition calls for the faithful to have a small smear of ashes placed on their forehead as a sign of penitence.

Of course, with all the Middle Eastern cities reduced to rubble by the US war machine, there's no shortage of ashes these days.

Hey, we could have patented that slogan and sold it to the Pentagon: "Ashes R US."

But today is still Mardi Gras. So we can worry about that tomorrow. At Tara. Like Scarlet O'Hara. But Cajun-style. If the folks in Louisiana would put up with her.
