Back to solving The Age-Old Dilemma. They’re a couple. She’s addicted to recreational shopping, and he’d rather have a root canal than be dragged along. The Guide offers a solution. There are events where merchants offer live music, often with other pleasant amenities, to lure shoppers. We reported in recent editions about the music-filled Thanksgiving weekend in Old Pasadena, and the special one-night annual events in Santa Monica, Claremont, and Venice. But it isn’t over: there are still the recurring events that take-on a Holiday character.

5-10 pm (Light Display Hours) 15th annual “LOS ANGELES DEPARTMENT OF WATER AND POWER GRIFFITH PARK LIGHT FESTIVAL” on Crystal Springs Drive, in Griffith Park, Los Angeles. This year’s annual event has nights for pedestrians and bicycles, horseback riders, and more, in addition to the run of nights when only cars make the trip to view the park’s annual light displays. Sixth Wave is Los Angeles' own six-voice, a cappella, jazz, pop, rock group, and they’re a nationally-acclaimed, award-winning 6-voice vocal collective. What’s a vocal collective? It is what happens when you bring a group of singers together who all have extensive resumes ranging from everything from opera to rock and roll, from jazz clubs in NYC to recording studios in L.A. All these elements are present in Sixth Wave.

"Just 4 Kicks is an a cappella vocal jazz quartet," says venue impresario and Folk Alliance FAR West Ambassador Award honoree Bob Stane. Bob quickly adds, “That's kind of like saying the Empire State Building is a skyscraper. Its true, but it doesn't begin to describe the experience of hearing this amazing wacky, virtuoso vocal jazz ensemble for the first time. Four uniquely talented and musically successful vocalists from the West Coast, each with independent careers in the music industry, were thrust together at several Northwest jazz festivals in 1993, and a quartet emerged.”

Just 4 Kicks’ Kirby Shaw, from Ashland, Oregon, is among the best known choral and vocal jazz composer/arrangers of our time. Randy Crenshaw is among the first-call studio singers and arrangers in Los Angeles. Four Freshmen alumnus Kirk Marcy doubles as director of the internationally-acclaimed vocal jazz ensemble Soundsation at Edmonds Community College, just north of Seattle. Vijay Singh (not the golfer), widely known for his versatility as a composer, arranger, soloist, and director of the vocal jazz program at Central Washington University in Ellensburg, Washington, rounds out the quartet. Bob Stane says, “With all four singers doing scat solos, vocalese, tight harmonies and impersonations of various instruments, this is one a cappella vocal group where the listener never misses the band!” Tix, 15.

Preston appeared on "The Tonight Show" along with the late Jimmy Stewart and released an album on Curb Records entitled "Preston Smith." He was featured on the hit movie soundtrack "Cocktail" starring Tom Cruise with the title song "Oh I Love You So," which he composed, produced and performed. The soundtrack went on to sell over six million units foreign and domestically. Roseanne Cash then recorded his song "Black and White," which released as a single, was a hit on the country radio charts, and was included in her Greatest Hits CD that went Gold. He sang for Barbra Streisand's wedding, and he’s performed at countless functions for celebrities, including Steven Spielberg, Bruce Willis, Aaron Spelling, Brad Grey, the cast of The Soprano's, and the late Sonny Bono; Bonnie Raitt, Eddie Van Halen and Jerry Lee Lewis, and many others have joined him on-stage for impromptu jam sessions.
