1) Award-winning musician FREEBO wrote an essay on climate change that’s worth a read, and we present it as a guest editorial in the Guide. It’s entertaining and thoughtful, and takes it to the “deniers” of right-wing media. You can read it at http://acousticamericana.blogspot.com/2010/02/climate-change-by-freebo-special-to.html

Starring DENISE MOURGES. As a teenage dancer, Denise opened for THE ROLLING STONES their first concert in America. Then, she opened for THE BEATLES at Shea Stadium and on their U.S tour that same year (1965). She danced on TV’s "Hullabaloo." As a bicoastal, envelope-pushing Rock-and-rollian, Denise became friends with many musicians, including Jimi Hendrix and Gram Parsons. Denise says, "I learned a lot about music from them, spending hours in studios as they made records still relevant, fresh and alive." Later, Denise wrote on music, law, medicine and lifestyle for Entertainment Weekly and The New York Times. Accompanied by friends, Denise sings a selection of torch songs that she has chosen because they “reveal a core human bond transcendent of borders: the broken heart.” Accompanying Denise are:
+
JOHN HUG on acoustic and electric guitars. John has been in on the creation of over 300 LPs, working with a roster of talent spanning Don Henley, Cher, Eddie Kendricks, Waylon Jennings, Jackie De Shannon, Gregg Allman and Burt Bachrach. His production credits include songs from the soundtrack LP for the movie "Ghostbusters" and Marty Balin of the Jefferson Airplane.
+
JANA LEE ROSS, pianist and musical director. Jana (pronounced jay-na) is Musical Director of KCME classical radio in Colorado Springs, Colorado. As a vocalist / pianist, Jana performs regularly in that city, often with her jazz combo HIDDEN AGENDA.
+
Plus, a fund-raising SILENT AUCTION of very classy "Objets d’ Heart" happens in conjunction with the show. (See the Guide’s listing for examples):
+

4) UNIQUE VALENTINE FOR THE ONE WHO HAS EVERYTHING…
Twenty years ago on Valentine’s Day, the Voyager 1 spacecraft took one last farewell photo that NASA calls “Voyager’s Valentine to the Solar System.” The intrepid little robot, including its gold phonograph record of “Earth’s Greatest Hits,” had sailed beyond the outermost planet in our solar system. Scientists turned its camera inward to snap a series of final images - its parting valentine to the string of planets it called home.
+
Mercury was too close to the sun to see, Mars showed only a thin crescent of sunlight, and Pluto was too dim, but Voyager was able to capture cameos of Neptune, Uranus, Saturn, Jupiter, Earth and Venus from its unique vantage point. These images, later arranged in a large-scale mosaic, make up the only family portrait of our planets arrayed about the sun. It had taken more than 12 years to reach the place where it took the group portrait, 6 billion kilometers (almost 4 billion miles) away from the sun.
+
So, if your sweetie has everything else, or just plain wants something you can’t afford, you can download a Valentine taken by Voyager and make that your unique gift. It’s available free at www.jpl.nasa.gov/news/news.cfm?release=2010-048&cid=release_2010-048

One listener commented, “How in the world do you have all of this music!? I am amazed when I tune in the magnitude of your collection! Thanks so much for sharing it!” And if you’re wondering, JANET KLEIN (Janet Klein & Her Parlor Boys) brought it to the Guide’s attention. Everybody knows the world-famous Coffee Gallery Backstage, with its parade of professional acts. Now, Duane Thorin hosts this new weekly series, wherein invited artists lead sing-alongs, assisted by other musicians who drop by and want to play. Donna says, “There will be a few musicians to keep us together, but this event is not about showing what a great soloist you are - it is about everyone enjoying themselves, and singing - whether or not everyone is in tune (and I expect there will be sour notes - joy is not always pretty).” Duane adds, “Public invited to sing and play along to songs we all know and love. Musicians and singers welcome! We’ll start with all the Beatles songs and go forward and back from there. No sign up, just show up, sing from the audience or move up front to play along as well. The Coffee Gallery now features soup and sandwiches in the evening, plus coffee drinks, white and dark hot chocolate, pies, smoothies, smiles and good company.” This does NOT take the place of scheduled shows in the Backstage – it’s in addition to scheduled shows there. 8 pm AN EVENING WITH RANDY NEWMAN at UCLA Live in Royce Hall, 340 Royce Dr, on the UCLA campus at Royce Dr between Westwood Bl and Hilgard Av, West L.A. UCLA ticket office: 310-825-2101 or www.uclalive.org. The promo calls him, “America’s premiere musical fabulist,” and Randy Newman has maintained a remarkable balance of trenchant vignettes, exaggerated outrage and, especially in his film work, earnest sentiment. His latest album, “Harps and Angels,” employs sardonic wit and self-deprecation on a level worthy of Mark Twain. And Newman’s wry classics, including “Political Science,” “I Love L.A.,” and his much-played during the aftermath of Katrina, “Louisiana 1927,” have only grown in relevance with time. But Newman shines most brightly in his rare concert appearances, where his mischievous presence complements his musical and storytelling talents. Tix, $65, $50, $40; UCLA students $15.

Accompanied by friends, Denise sings a selection of torch songs that she has chosen because they “reveal a core human bond transcendent of borders: the broken heart.”

+
Jerry and friends take a musical journey leading from familiar pop songs of the late ’50s to an exploration of his folk roots and experiences as the surviving co-founder of We Five, the group that had a million selling hit record with the folk-rock classic, You Were On My Mind. It is a totally entertaining experience that also manages to inform the audience about pockets of our American heritage we have overlooked, forgotten, or never really knew.
+
The sets are laced with a fabric woven from the spirit of Woody Guthrie, John & Alan Lomax, Pete Seeger and the Weavers, to the more contemporary artists they inspired when Jerry was coming of age in the mid sixties under the mentoring eye of John Stewart—No, not the comedic TV host, but the Kingston Trio banjo player, writer of countless classic songs including Runaway Train, Gold, and Daydream Believer, as well as an early pioneer of the musical form that’s come to be called Americana.
+
Jerry’s songs, stories and guitar are beautifully complimented by bassist and humorist, Tholow Chan. Joining them for this show is Jerry’s wife and lead singer from WE FIVE, Debbie Burgan. Their stage rapport has a quality which can only come with time, and their arrangements reflect voices that can be disarmingly bold and beautiful. Tix, $15.

8 pm EVAN J. MARSHALL and BILLY & THE HILLBILLIES, featuring JOHN "SLAP-BASS BILLY" MARSHALL, plus opening act PHOEBE BRIDGERS, at the venue named in FolkWorks as L.A.’s best intimate acoustic listening room venue - The Coffee Gallery Backstage, 2029 N Lake Av, Altadena; reservations 626-689-4144; info www.coffeegallery.com.
+
EVAN J. MARSHALL is widely regarded as one of the greatest mandolin virtuosos ever. He possesses an uncanny technique which the Raleigh-Durham Independent called "superhuman," the Los Angeles Times called "remarkable," the Washington Post labeled "truly dazzling," and the Fresno Bee called "mind-boggling." Besides his "obvious virtuosity" (Pasadena Star News), he also has "in color and texture . . . a stunning mastery of interpretation" (St. Paul Pioneer Press). Evan's accomplishments are legendary among other artists of the plucked string: The late Chet Atkins called him "one of the few great musicians of our time;" Don Stiernberg calls him "The Michael Jordan of the mandolin."
+
Evan reprises his role with BILLY & THE HILLBILLIES, featuring JOHN "SLAP-BASS BILLY" MARSHALL... JOHN MARSHALL, founder of "Billy and the Hillbillies," has performed for about four million visitors to the Golden Horseshoe Theater at the world's most famous theme park during the course of 18,000 shows spanning 17 years. (Evan played over 10,000 of those shows.) Evan’s brother John brings his "Hillbillies at the Symphony" program to over a dozen of the country's premier orchestras, including the Baltimore Symphony & the Houston Symphony. A consummate entertainer, he is widely regarded as the greatest slap-bass virtuoso in the world of Bluegrass.
+
Opening the show is PHOEBE BRIDGERS, who has played her original acoustic folk all over Los Angeles, including the Topanga Banjo Fiddle Contest and Folk Festival, Folk Music Center in Claremont, and the Echo’s Back Porch. Phoebe is an engaging performer for such a young singer, and her own songs are mature and insightful. Tix, $20.

+
Here’s an excerpt from Joel Okida’s piece on the band in the current FolkWorks (www.folkworks.org) ~
+
“As the traveling ensemble, Vagabond Opera, makes its way up and down the west coast, they will soon park here and bring an entertainment to our fine, but fickle and financially-strapped city; an evening which promises to be filled with tongue-in-cheekiness, cheery chicanery, and perhaps a skosh of the scoundrel. Performing selections from the their last recording, ‘The Zeitgeist Beckons,’ as well as offerings from two previous CDs, the staunchly acoustic Vagabond Opera brings thrills and chills in their ‘opera in four acts, maybe even five.’ A tantalizing tango, a tarantella tarriance, a wandering waltz, and who knows, maybe even a triple-measured mazurka will be performed with full operatic interpretation and expert instrumental-attended accompaniment.”

Sun, Feb 28, in Ventura; a “SHOW-OF-THE-WEEK” pick:
4 pm CORRINE WEST & KELLY JOE PHELPS play the Duncan House Concert Series in Ventura; reservations get directions, at www.myspace.com/duncanhouseconcerts. Corrine has performed live on radio’s “Tied to the Tracks,” and if you like Alison Krauss, you'll love Corrine.
+
Kelly Joe Phelps is a guitar virtuoso and great bluesman.
+
There's magic in Corinne West's voice. It aches and breaks. It soars. It's clear, penetrating and washed in emotion. When she wraps that voice around songs as sublime as those on her latest CD, “Second Sight,” she's spellbinding. That's because she's unlocked the secret that so many singers spend entire careers looking for and never find.
+
"She writes great songs, plays with top flight musicians, sports a killer voice and oh yes, has sultry good looks- she could easily be cast as a princess in a ‘Lord of the Rings’-type movie (hopefully a singing part)" - Americana Roots.com.
+
"West, who took to the road at the tender age of fifteen, is a masterful songwriter, winning awards at Kerrville Folk Festival. She has a distinct voice with echoes of another Californian, the late Kate Wolf. Educated on the streets West has a raw sincerity in her lyrics and her singing." - Montrose Daily Press, Colorado.
+
"Coupling a voice to die for with beautifully crafted songs that are memorable both lyrically and melodically, West has fashioned a unique identity within American music's acoustic/roots scene." - Colin Hall, R2, RocknReel: The UK's best selling eclectic music magazine.
+
Scott Duncan says, “For those that missed the special Rhythm Angels show, and for those that were lucky enough to attend that great concert, here is a show not to miss. Corrine's CDs have been playing over and over in our car for over a year. We arraigned our trip to England in September ‘09 to catch her in London on her latest UK tour. This will be one of the best concerts you've ever see!” More at www.myspace.com/corinnewest and www.myspace.com/kellyjoephelps357

In this captivating show, the Dublin born singer-songwriter will transport his audience to his beloved Ireland with his rich, resonant voice and engaging stage presence accompanied by his remarkable talent on guitar and mandolin.
+
The University of St. Thomas at Houston proclaims that Ken O'Malley is "widely regarded as the finest Irish folk singer/songwriter in the United States today" and the Irish News calls this consummate entertainer "without question, . . .the single most enduring, influential and proficient of all Irish musicians in Southern California . . ." And, last year, Folkworks Magazine named him second among the top 10 live acoustic male singer-songwriters in Los Angeles.
+
The event promises to be a magical evening of music with songs in both English and Irish Gaelic, suitable for all ages. Not just a singer, about whom Dave Soyars of the Irish Herald writes "his powerful and emotive voice shines through on everything he does", O'Malley is also a cultural ambassador and educator who infuses every performance with a genuine passion and love for his native land and its people. 8 pm THE RIDERS OF THE PURPLE SAGE, with a solo set by mandolin phenom EVAN MARSHALL, at the venue named in FolkWorks as L.A.’s best intimate acoustic listening room venue - The Coffee Gallery Backstage, 2029 N Lake Av, Altadena; reservations 626-689-4144; info www.coffeegallery.com.
+
Named in FolkWorks as the Best Acoustic Band of 2008, they are one of, if not "the" most historical Western bands in the world. The Riders Of The Purple Sage have starred in films and radio for the pre-war days to today... Today's Riders, under the leadership of Cody Bryant, put on a show rich with old and new music. Band members are skilled musicians, and their instruments include a five-string banjo, hot lead guitar, fiddles, steel guitar, bass, hammer dulcimer, concert harp, coronet, drums, and consummate vocals.
+
While keeping alive the tradition of the original Riders' sound, they continue to write and perform new material that carries on and builds upon their signature style. Adding a strong swing influence (ala Bob Wills and his Texas Playboys), their performances appeal to listeners and dancers of all ages. Today’s Riders bring together hot swing riffs with smooth harmonies that, at the end of the show, leave the audience wanting more. Their sound and show makes you feel that all is well in the West. After one performance Larry Wines called them “ethereal and orchestral,” adding, “They exceeded musicianship. They exceeded their genre.” Venue impresario Bob Stane adds, “You owe it to yourself to see this most amazing and amusing exhibit. Forget what you think you like and don’t like. See The Riders Of The Purple Sage.” Tix, $20.

8 pm WALTER STRAUSS at the venue named in FolkWorks as L.A.’s best intimate acoustic listening room venue - The Coffee Gallery Backstage, 2029 N Lake Av, Altadena; reservations 626-689-4144; info www.coffeegallery.com. "A many-layered, multi-textured, one-man folk festival." – Maverick Magazine (UK) "...dazzling...guitar-based music with an artistry that’s unparalleled." – The Daily Freeman, Kingston, NY. "...really musical and quite innovative" – Pierre Bensusan, renowned French-Algerian guitarist.
+
Walter Strauss is a "wizard of the fingerstyle guitar" (Netrhythms UK), a songwriter educated by the ghosts of the high desert where he was born. His music is simultaneously fiery and refined, and his multi-layered guitarwork will make you swear several are playing at once. With roots in American song and a unique style that evokes far reaches of the globe, Walter's music mesmerizes - be it a song about the vast American West or an ambitious guitar translation of traditional music from another part of the world.
+
In addition to his solo work, Walter has performed throughout North America, the UK and Ireland with musicians ranging from Grammy nominated kora master Mamadou Diabate to eclectic songsters The Burns Sisters and fiddle legend Vassar Clements. Recently, Walter produced Stevie Coyle's (formerly of The Waybacks) solo CD, & was lauded in the press throughout the UK and Ireland on his breakout 22-show solo tour. 8 pm It’s “DINNER and a SHOW” with THE SWINGIN’ ARMANI BROTHERS at the venue named in FolkWorks as L.A.’s best intimate acoustic listening room venue - The Coffee Gallery Backstage, 2029 N Lake Av, Altadena; reservations 626-689-4144; info www.coffeegallery.com.
+
Last month’s “Italian Party Night with the Swingin’ Armani Brothers” was an Italian delight of Italian folk music and opera, mixed with the great more contemporary songs, and the band was joined by two very genuine opera singers. We expect the opera singers to take part tonight, as well.
+
There’s catered italian food, a drawing for an Armani mandolin signed by the band, as well as other Italiana flavored items. Venue impresario Bob Stane says, “Tap your toe and sway to classic neopolitan Italian folk music with a little Frank & Dino thrown in… violin, mandolin, guitar, bass and percussion by the Brothers, who, very often, suspiciously in certain light, look remarkably like some members of the Riders of the Purple Sage - but in pinstripes. Legend has it the Brothers stowed away on a freighter carrying olive oil from the old country to pursue their musical dreams in the Small Apple. See them before their green cards expire! The Coffee Gallery has cleverly stolen them away from a nearly endless tour of Italian restaurant lounges to perform for you. Bob Stane consumed gallons of latte’s in his caffeinated and fevered pursuit of this unsung and largely cult act, so that you, his loyal music lovers, could enjoy them in the safe and relaxing confines of the Coffee Gallery. Jackson Armani will dazzle you with his mandolin virtuosity and his oh-so-romantic violin, and Codio will croon the night away. Relax, dance the tarantella with a ‘Stranger In The Night’ and sing along with with your new found Italian friends to ‘That’s Amore.’ Come hungry! All this for only $19.99, dinner included.”

After one performance, critic Larry Wines called them “ethereal and orchestral,” adding, “They exceeded musicianship. They exceeded their genre.” Venue impresario Bob Stane adds, “You owe it to yourself to see this most amazing and amusing exhibit. Forget what you think you like and don’t like. See The Riders Of The Purple Sage.” Tix, $20.

Jun 17-20, in Colorado:
37th Annual “TELLURIDE BLUEGRASS FESTIVAL” in Telluride, Colorado, is quite simply one of the best acoustic music festivals in the world. This year’s lineup includes SAM BUSH BAND, YONDER MOUNTAIN STRING BAND, BÉLA FLECK with ZAKIR HUSSAIN & EDGAR MEYER, THE DEL McCOURY BAND, HOT RIZE, PUNCH BROTHERS featuring CHRIS THILE, LEFTOVER SALMON, TIM O'BRIEN BAND, JERRY DOUGLAS, PETER ROWAN, CAROLINA CHOCOLATE DROPS, JOHN COWAN BAND, IMELDA MAY, CADILLAC SKY, MUMFORD & SONS, THE DREPUNG MONKS, SARAH JAROSZ, THE HILLBENDERS, JOSH RITTER BAND, EDWARD SHARPE & THE MAGNETIC ZEROS, the always anticipated TELLURIDE HOUSE BAND featuring SAM BUSH, BÉLA FLECK, JERRY DOUGLAS, EDGAR MEYER, BRYAN SUTTON & STUART DUNCAN, plus plenty more sets day and night by many other acoustic artists who bring music within and well beyond the bluegrass genre. Much more info and links at www.bluegrass.com/telluride. Camping, especially for the closest campgrounds, and the full four-day passes always go quickly; campground spaces and festival tix are now on sale, at 800-624-2422 or http://shop.bluegrass.com.
+
The festival coincides with the Summer Solstice; the longest day of the year and the beginning of summer. It's a magical time of sun and light, when the high country of Colorado puts away its skis and grabs hiking boots, kayaks, and a low-back festival chair to take in bluegrass and other acoustic music that’s arguably related, but always wonderful.
+
This year’s lineup provides another magical four days of only-in-Telluride performances by beloved festival veterans and inspiring new talent. Telluride royalty includes virtuosic bluegrass superpickers, soulful songwriters, and some of the biggest stars in the rootsy Americana landscape.
+
The festival is built around the many artists that have defined the Telluride Bluegrass sound. The weekend is sprinkled with inspired sets from Peter Rowan, John Cowan, Sam Bush Band, Béla Fleck (performing in a trio with Indian tabla master Zakir Hussain and bassist Edgar Meyer), and many others, culminating in the epic festival closing set from the Telluride House Band (Sam Bush, Béla Fleck, Jerry Douglas, Edgar Meyer, Bryan Sutton, Stuart Duncan).
+
Del McCoury returns to Telluride to celebrate his 50th year in the music industry. Yonder Mountain String Band celebrates their 11th year; Leftover Salmon celebrates their 20th year as a band - a band that formed in the Town Park campground jams of Telluride Bluegrass. Punch Brothers featuring Chris Thile follow-up last year's "Punch Brothers Play & Sing Bluegrass" with a new set of original music.
+
Since its very beginning, the festival has embraced a wide swath of roots music to create the unique genre of "Telluride Bluegrass." This year's lineup welcomes Edward Sharpe & the Magnetic Zeros, Dublin's rockabilly superstar Imelda May, London arena-folk quartet Mumford & Sons, and much more.
+
The festival is just above the town of Telluride, nestled in the rugged San Juan Mountains at nearly 9,000 feet above the sea, and surrounded on three sides by the natural architecture of the Telluride Box Canyon, Telluride is arguably the most spectacular town in the American West.
+
For regulars, who call themselves “festivarians,” Telluride is The Bluegrass Festival. Regulars here include a loyal following of artists, as well. Some cite the “unique thrill” that comes from “performing in front of the smartest, most attentive audience in the country,” as the festival site says. Promoters assert, “Artists are encouraged to take risks in Telluride, and the Festivarian audience [which has its own website] is regularly rewarded with unique blends of voices sharing the stage for the first time - as a new musical friendship cultivated backstage makes its debut on the Telluride stage.”
+
Your editor has been there, and all that is true. Telluride lives up to its hype. In fact, it exceeds it.
+
With music on the main stage all day, intimate workshops on the Elks Park stage in the middle of town, prestigious band and songwriting contests, late-night Nightgrass concerts at every indoor venue in town, and jam sessions throughout the night in the town’s condos and in the campgrounds near and far (connected by festival bus service), it’s a week of uncommon musical riches.

KCBX serves a broadcast area of San Luis Obispo and Santa Barbara Counties.
+
The event’s self-promo is quite accurate: “Live Oak, as it has become affectionately known, is more than just a music festival — it is an experience rooted in music and community. These two elements together create a three-day journey into a timeless place that is far removed from ties and clocks, suits and schedules. The festival features an aural collage of live music ranging from traditional, folk, bluegrass and gospel, to blues, jazz, classical and world music. Nestled in the oak trees of the quiet Santa Ynez Valley, Live Oak comes alive as an outdoor music festival showcasing some of the finest musicians from around the world. The camping experience at Live Oak creates a community of several thousand friendly people that are all doing the same thing — relaxing and having fun in the warm sunshine of June.”

Jul 18-22, in Colorado:
Annual “ROCKYGRASS ACADEMY” on the 14-acre Planet Bluegrass Ranch in Lyons, CO; www.bluegrass.com/rga. Check for open classes at http://shop.bluegrass.com or 800-624-2422.
+
For a week each year before the ROCKYGRASS festival begins, Planet Bluegrass offers their academy, with everything from small classes taught by world-class professional musicians, to sessions on group jamming, vocal coaching, songwriting, one-on-one instruction, and more. The curriculum features a broad variety of electives including learning fiddle tunes, practice techniques, writing instrumentals, accompaniment, improvisation, and musical history. Evenings feature band scrambles, barbecues, and plenty of jamming for novice through advanced ability levels. Many Academy students return year after year, creating long-term relationships with budding musicians from all over the world.
+
Instrument Classes are taught by RockyGrass Festival performers - world-class bluegrass musicians representing several generations of the music's history and future. These talented musicians spend the week teaching instrument classes, leading jams, and sharing their wealth of musical experience. Typically, these include three levels of instrument instruction for guitar, mandolin, fiddle, and bass, as well as classes in banjo (Scruggs-style and clawhammer) and dobro.
+
Vocal, Songwriting & Traditional Dance Classes are separate course tracks. And there’s a Kids Camp for children (ages 7-14) of registered Academy students, taught by the award-winning Bearfoot, the bluegrass band from Alaska, now in their seventh year of teaching.
+
The academy offers a popular “Instrument Building Experience” where a few lucky participants have the chance to walk away with a hand-built instrument in just four days. All the instrument kits allow students to sample a variety of building techniques and materials during the process. Along with the mandolin family of instruments, this year offers two mandolin building graduates the chance to build a travel guitar. For the mandos, no building experience is required, just a good attitude and focus. The “Experience” has produced over 160 instruments built to date.
+
Of course, if you go, you’ll surely want to stay for the ROCKYGRASS Festival, on the following three days. (See the Guide’s Jul 23-25 listing.)
