*Sun, every Sun; not music, but cool:
11 am-3 pm “FREE TRAIN RIDES” behind miniature steam locomotives at Los Angeles Live Steamers (LALS) Railroad Museum, 5202 Zoo Dr, Griffith Park, L.A. 90027. Closed on rainy days. This is not the park’s carnival-style train, though it is indeed big enough to ride, and the trains are pulled by real (if lilliputian) steam locomotives. It’s just east of Travel Town where there are real, full-size but immobile steam trains. Revisit all those songwriting dreams of riding the rails and hearing lonesome whistles, even if each of the engines’ “big” drive wheels are something like four inches in diameter instead of 70 or 80 inches, and the whistles are more akin to piccolos than the haunting reverberations of the denizens of the high iron. LALS is a non-profit that’s been around since 1956, founded by train enthusiasts to educate people in railroad history and lore and to further the avocation of live steam, gas-mechanical and electronic railroad technology. They operate 7 1/2 inch-gauge (distance between the rails) model trains for the general public to ride every Sunday (weather permitting). The gate is open from 10:45 am to 3 pm. In addition, they have extensive layouts for 4 3/4” and 3 1/2” gauge model trains. Passengers must be at least 34″ in height, and weigh under 350 lbs. LALS survives solely from donations by fans who visit and ride the trains. Admission is free but be kind and give the suggested donation of $3. More at www.lals.org

*Sun, 3rd Sun, every month:
Noon-3 pm Monthly “WESTERN MUSIC ASSOCIATION SOUTHERN CAL JAM SESSION” is really a song circle, and named in FolkWorks as co-winner of L.A.’s “Best Monthly Listening Room Series” - on the Heritage Court Stage in the Autry National Center (Autry Museum), 4700 Western Heritage Way, Griffith Park; 818-971-5002; www.museumoftheamericanwest.org. WMA California Chapter meeting follows. All performing musicians (whether or not they are Autry members or WMA members) get in free, and each may bring one guest, free. In addition, on WMA jam days at the Autry, all WMA members (whether or not they are performing) are admitted free (w/ WMA membership ID) and get access to the jam and to all the museum galleries for the whole day.
+
Multiple-award-winning performing songwriter JOYCE WOODSON says, “You can have lunch there at the Golden Spur [café] first, then stop by for some music.” (Joyce even participates when she’s not on tour.) More on event at www.westernmusic.org. This is a very well-attended, very popular song circle with comfortable chairs for all. If you’re unfamiliar with a “song circle,” each performer or group does a song in turn, often backed instrumentally by others in the circle, and it goes around and around until time’s up. (Here, it’s a line of music-makers, across the front.) Cowboy poets welcome, too. Expansion to three hours (it was two hours) came at the invitation of the Autry, when it became obvious that so many people visit the museum just to listen (or perform). Museum gen’l adm $9 adults, $3 kids age 12 and under.

*Sun, third Sun, every month, during the summer:
1-4 pm “ACOUSTIC MUSIC IN THE MOUNTAINS” at Adam’s Pack Station in the San Gabriel Mountains, with different performing artists each time; it’s north up Santa Anita Av (from the 210 or the 10 Fwy) into the mountains, to the end of the road at Chantry Flat; 626-447-7356; www.adamspackstation.com. This popular summer concert series originated in 2007 and ran another year before going on a hiatus that looked like the end. Happily, it returned for the summer in 2010, the third Sat each month, with different musicians. You can see a waterfall, have lunch there (starting at 11 am), enjoy open air music, and pet a donkey. The pack station is at road's end, three miles from the entrance gate. Drive through the middle parking lot at Chantry Flat around left, through the upper lot and down the dirt driveway. Follow the signs.
+
Here's a bit of background from the Pack Station web site:
"Chantry Flat, the heart of Big Santa Anita Canyon, and one of the most popular and historically-significant spots in the Angeles National Forest, is thought to be the last pack station of its kind in the United States. So, what is a pack station? A pack station is the base of operations for one who transports freight via pack animals (this person is called an outfitter). What we do at Adams' Pack Station, and what makes us unique, is deliver supplies year-round to a permanent community that is only accessible by footpath. We are the life-blood of 80 antique recreational cabins plus 116-year-old Sturtevant's Camp. The pack string and the old-fashioned crank phone system are their only link to the modern world. A visit to our beautiful canyon is like taking a step back in time. We also offer a public General Store. Come for your Forest Service Adventure Passes, water, and trail mix before your hike; return for soft drinks and ice cream, or an ice cold beer, on the shady deck. Or just drive up for coffee and conversation - we're only fifteen minutes from the ‘big city.’” For the kids, the music is adjacent to the petable goats.
+
Each concert day, their Dutch oven chef has available “his famous” pulled pork sandwiches, and the range-top cook makes her Vegetarian Italian Sausage Sandwiches. Food served 11 am-5 pm. Ice cold beer is available. The Park is open for hiking from 8 am-5 pm. Music and park access are free, but the National Forest requires an “Adventure Pass” (the forest’s excuse to charge you for parking; it’s available at the Pack Station).
