Fri, Sep 3; a “SHOW-OF-THE-WEEK” pick:
7:30 pm SARA HICKMAN plays the Acoustic Concert series at Neighborhood Church, 301 N Orange Grove Bl, Pasadena. As always with the series, the DAVE MORRISON BAND opens.
+
SARA HICKMAN is the Official State Musician of Texas for 2011 – a position held by Willie Nelson the year just ending. Besides being a stellar musician, she is known as “a stellar human being,” known for raising funds and supporting a wide variety of causes.
+
Sara is an engaging performer and songwriter with hits in both Austin, her home base, and Nashville. She’s played all the big performing arts centers, along with arenas, festivals, and the county fair circuit. This is a fine opportunity to see her in a small venue without towers of speakers and that standard-in-a-big-venue echoing sound.
+
Sara gets great press, everywhere:
“Lyrically, Hickman is as clever and insightful as a roomful of ordinary singer-songwriters." - Eric Fidler, Associated Press
+
"With a warm heart and insightful words... her uplifting perspectives have the power to "heal," creating images of both the negative and positive sides to the human condition... - Lana Fanelli, Rolling Stone
+
"Sara Hickman possesses a sparkling voice that expressively moves from pensive to giddy to sensual, and her words and music tap into emotions we all share." - Discovery Records
+
"Tuneful, clever and carefully observed, Sara Hickman's material has all the strengths expected of a contemporary Texas songwriter, plus one more -- whimsy... - J.D.C., Rolling Stone
+
"...Hickman is a singing poet...while her songs are often peaceful and gentle, she comes equipped with sharp edges, an eagle eye and a unique ability to work a house with stories, quips and dedications...she sings and talks directly to audience members, much like the sharpest of comedians." - Jim Beal, San Antonio Express-News
+
L.A.-based singer-songwriter DAVE MORRISON is a Trough records artist who performs frequently, though not always with his sizeable band that includes some players who are solo artists in their own rights. Morrison’s second CD, “Shout at the Moon,” is nearly ready for release.
+
Doors at 7 pm for the best seats. Snacks and beverages available, by donation. Reservations, 213-219-2449. Tix, $20 at the door, if any remain.

Fri, Sep 3; world music:
7:30 pm MARIA DE BARROS plays the Levitt Pavilion for the Performing Arts - L.A., in MacArthur Park, 2230 W 6th St (at S Park View), downtown L.A.; 213-368-0520; www.levittla.org; concert series, 213-384-5701. Maria de Barros' music transcends taste, preference and even language. It travels through countries dense with culture, picking up pieces of each along the way, combining distinct inflections of Africa, Brazil, the Caribbean, France and Spain, while allowing the tradition and culture of Cape Verde to permeate.
+
Melodies melt off her tongue with the same richness and maturity of a contemporary Ella Fitzgerald in a Cape Verde club, except that this songstress delivers a taste of Latin spice, serving auditory Portuguese and African cuisine, plus accompanying dancers. Her audiences swing their hips to Maria's sensual Morna and Coladeira beats.
+
Maria’s new album, “Morabeza,” according to one review, is "A simple and sublime expression that characterizes the soul of a people; it is solidarity in times of misfortune; it is kindness, tenderness, hospitality, sympathy and friendship", and another calls it “an eclectic blend of sounds with songs alternating in tempo, beat and style, making for an exciting tantalisation of the ear drums.”
+
Bring a blanket or lawn chair and a picnic dinner. Free show.
