FREE FESTIVAL,
in Highland Park (NE L.A.):
10:30 am-7 pm  8th  Annual "LUMMIS DAY" FESTIVAL brings live music, dance, poetry and art, representing a rainbow of cultural traditions. This Festival has become one of L.A.’s signature cultural events.

It happens at two sites in Highland Park:
• Heritage Square Museum, 3800 Homer St, Highland Park, with the main performance stages
and
•  Lummis Home, 200 East Ave 43, Highland Park, where the two-site festival opens with a morning event at 10:30 am.

Heritage Square Museum events, beginning at 12:30 am, include the best of home-grown Northeast L.A. music, dance, and food. Performances are presented amid historic buildings preserved on the museum grounds. Some of these historic structures will be accessible to festival-goers with docent-led tours. The recently opened old drugstore museum will be a highlight.

The 10:30 am opening event at  Lummis Home
Includes readings by critically-acclaimed poets. The site will feature live music, art exhibits, and refreshments. The Festival’s art exhibit continues at Lummis Home until 5 pm.

Music, poetry, and  dance performances and most activities shift to nearby Heritage Square Museum beginning at 12:30 pm. Music acts include roots and Folk-Americana music. Be sure to catch JIM KWESKIN with THE CROCKETT SISTERS, and the TALL MEN GROUP (more below).

There are plenty of kid-friendly programs and activities, including scheduled puppet shows from an old-time circus-style puppet show wagon.

Visitors to Lummis Home throughout the day can enjoy the interior of the century-old home, influenced by mission architecture and the dwellings of the Pueblo Indians. In addition, you can stroll through the beautiful native plant gardens that surround the building.

A free shuttle connects the two sites with the Metro Gold Line light rail. Go Metro +MTA bus or Gold Line) to Lummis Day and bring proof of your ride to receive a free Goodie Bag at the festival.

Roots, Mexican/border, and Folk-Americana music all day on multiple stages. At 4 pm, catch THE TALL MEN GROUP (Severin Browne, Marty Axelrod, Ed Tree, Jeff Kossack, Jimmy Yessian, John Stowers).

Severin Browne explains, "This annual festival honors local historical figure Charles Lummis. For those of you who have driven north on the Pasadena Freeway between Downtown L.A. and Pasadena, you may have noticed a group of old historic houses on the east side of the road. That is Heritage Square. All those old houses were moved there from their original locations to be preserved and to act as a museum. And there will be a few stages with lots of music, puppet shows, dance troupes, and fun for the whole family."

The Guide concurs, it is indeed fun, and a good opportunity to get tours and inside peeks of the preserved train station, recently-opened vintage drugstore, old houses, print shop, and more. Good food available, too.

The Lummis Day Festival is presented by the Lummis Day Community Foundation. The group celebrates the arts, history and ethnic diversity of Northeast Los Angeles through educational and cultural events and the annual Festival.
