√ Today is the birthday of L.A.-based musician EARL GREY. And bestselling author PAUL ZOLLO (“Songwriters on Songwriting”) sent a celebratory note worth sharing (and envying):
+
Paul Zollo writes, “Happy Earl Grey Day! We celebrate this day, the birthday of Earl Grey, one of the best humans I have ever been lucky enough to know. On this day we celebrate musicians and artists and authors and poets and all those people who enrich our world with their loving brilliance - few people I have ever known recognize their value more than Urlie, who has not only read a few of the great books - he's read every one of them!! And few people in my life have ever treated me - the songwriter me - with more love or appreciation. So on this day, in his honor, have a drink or a smoke or whatever makes you happy, and put on great music, or read a great book, and delight in the fact that humans can do this stuff. And tell those you love how much you love them, without apology. Love you forever Urlie Gee.”
√ We noted yesterday that it was the birthday of the late LESLIE PERRY, L.A.-based storyteller, author, and Civil Rights activist. We did not realize that we should have noted another May 28 event in conjunction.

May 28, 1963, was the “Woolworth Sit-In” in Jackson, MS. John Salter, a participant wrote, "This was the most violently attacked sit-in during the 1960s. I was attacked with fists, brass knuckles and the broken portions of glass sugar containers, and was burned with cigarettes."

+
Bob continues, “Two world class performers. One diverse evening of instrumental music. One historical musical inventor.” Quite a night.
+
Chapman Stick player Tom Griesgraber and guitarist Bert Lams celebrate the release of their new concept album: Unnamed Lands. The culmination of over four years of collaboration and one of the most inspired projects either musician has ever been a part of, this all-original work tells the story of a group of wagon train pioneers heading west circa 1840. A strong progressive rock influence and adventurous sounds blend seamlessly with a highly melodic, folk-like approach into what could almost be called "Progressive Americana." The duo is honored to be joined by Chapman Stick inventor Emmett Chapman, who will perform an opening set. In addition to creating the Stick instruments, beginning in 1969, Emmett has taken his musical invention and his unique approach to improvisation to venues throughout the world.
+
Tom Griesgraber is one of the world’s most active players of the Chapman Stick, a unique 12-string guitar/bass hybrid. An honors graduate of Berklee College of Music, he has performed across the US and Europe as a soloist and with his groups Marotta/Griesgraber and Agent 22.
+
Bert Lams is a founding member of the California Guitar Trio, and known for his affinity with the music of J.S.Bach. His recent arrangements of Bach's cello suites and violin partitas for solo guitar were released on his solo CD 'Nascent'. Bert tunes his guitar in fifths; a tuning more closely resembling a cello than a traditional guitar.
+
California Guitar Trio member Bert Lams and Chapman Stick player Tom Griesgraber play a new set of original music featured on their new CD 'Unnamed Lands'.
+
Bert Lams initially gained notice in 1980 as first laureate for National Music Contest for Youth in Brussels, and went on to earn an honors degree in the study of classical guitar, at the Royal Conservatory of Music in Brussels, Belgium. After attending Guitar Craft seminars with Robert Fripp, Bert Lams co-founded the CGT with Paul Richards (U.S.) and Hideyo Moriya (Japan).
+
Since 1993, CGT has released eleven albums and toured extensively across the world, performing their eclectic repertoire. CGT music was featured in the television coverage of the Olympics, and on CBS, NBC, CNN World Beat, and ESPN TV programs. Their music was sent into outer space to wake the crew aboard NASA's Space Shuttle Endeavor.
+
Bert's solo album 'Nascent' features new arrangements of Bach's cello suites and violin partitas for guitar and brings a unique twist to the classical guitar world. Not only are the pieces performed on steel string guitar with a pick, but they are also set in what's known as "New Standard Tuning"; a tuning more closely resembling a cello than a traditional guitar.
+
A honors graduate of Berklee College of Music in Boston, Tom Griesgraber is one of the world's most active performers on the Chapman Stick; a unique 12-string guitar and bass hybrid played more like piano with both hands sounding notes. He is an active composer and arranger for the instrument and his shows generally include a mix of original material as well as arrangements ranging from Bach to the Beatles.
+
Tom performs regularly across the US and Europe as a soloist or with his group Agent 22.
