1) TODAY IN HISTORY
May 7th, one hundred years ago today ...
The RMS Lusitania, a luxurious ocean liner built to carry passengers, was torpedoed and sunk by a German submarine, at least 1,195 people died – men, women, and children – including 128 Americans – and the world was shocked.
It was the second “unsinkable” gigantic ocean liner that went to the bottom of the sea in just a three-year span, following the loss of Titanic on April 15, 1912.
It took another two years, but this tragic incident precipitated the US entry into World War I. And enabled Allied victory. And made the US a player on the world stage. Briefly. Until the austerity-demanding isolationists took us off that stage, virtually assuring WW II.
As for the Lusitania herself? She was world-renowned, and had held the Blue Riband, the trophy for the fastest crossing of the Atlantic. But the British were secretely using her to smuggle war materiels from North America into Britain. And the Germans knew it, and placed a small ad in the New York papers before what would be her last voyage. The ad warned Americans not to sail on liners of British registry.
The Lusitania was torpedoed and quickly sank 12 miles off the south coast of Ireland. The U-boat captain who sank her was villified - except in Germany, where he was knighted.
The wreck of the Lusitania is at the extreme depth limit for divers. When she began to be visited in the 1970s, a sudden series of catastrophic collapses of the wreck began. Now there isn't much left. Some marine engineers and architects believe the Royal Navy secretely destroyed her, in stages, to cover-up the truth of the war materiels she was carrying on this day in 1915, one hundred years ago.
There's a real-time simulator for how fast Lusitania sank.
https://m.youtube.com/#/watch?v=gB7uFyH7bIs&itct=CCEQpDAYASITCNX05NGSsMUCFQdUfgod2TUA0TIHcmVsYXRlZEjcss6zmMyW4tkB
There is a look at the wreck on the sea floor that speculates how much time is left before the once-beautiful ship collapses into a heap.
https://m.youtube.com/#/watch?v=A7AuCXfNRdg
Musically, there are a few notable things out there. First, a 70-song set of recordings about various disasters from the era features art from the period of Lusitania going down. We follow that with two more YouTube links, including one for a 1915 song a one for a modern song.
• "People Take Warning! Murder Ballads & Disaster Songs, 1913-1938."
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w4TQl_HOeAI
• "When the Lusitania Went Down," written and recorded in 1915 and released just 13 days after the sinking, is the only song done at the time. Written by Charles McCarron, who died young in 1919, and Nathanial Vincent, who lived until 1979, and who also wrote "When the Bloom is on the Sage," "When Old Bill Bailey Plays the Ukulele," "Pucker Up and Whistle," and "That Railroad Rag." The link includes lyrics and excellent notes by music historian Tim Gracyk.
https://youtube.com/watch?v=2cRaYYZzmVw
• There's a modern Andrew Bird song titled "Lusitania" which is quite cryptic and obtuse and doesn't have much, if anything, to do with the ship or what happened to it. He recorded it with female singer St. Vincent, aka Annie Davis.
https://youtube.com/watch?v=OecM1x7iVPU
That modern song is a good place to note that it's always impossible for people in any time to comprehend the impact of events at the time they happened. But it's necessary that we try, if history is to hold any lessons for us.

8 pm THE LITTLEST BIRDS play the Coffee Gallery Backstage, 2029 N Lake Av., Altadena 92675; reservations, 626-798-6236.
+
Venue impresario Bob Stane reports:
THE LITTLEST BIRDS.....an old-time/bluegrass/folk duo, are Sharon, who wields a quiver of banjos with more dexterity than Robin Hood, and Dave, who plays his french cello like a dance with a life-long lover. Their voices blend in perfect clarity and harmony, singing songs both old and new, with a sprinkling of stories from far off countries, trials in the studio's garden, and life on the road. Classically trained, over-educated, but firmly rooted in reality, you'll connect to The Littlest Birds. If you think you can’t be blown away by a cello & banjo duo playing old time music, think again and plan to come see The Littlest Birds. They may hail from a small mountain town in the Eastern Sierra of California, but The Littlest Birds have established themselves as the ambassadors of folk and old time music on national and international stages, and back porches, alike. Both are classically trained: Dave Heubner plays the cello and Sharon Martinson plays the banjo and French horn – “think instrumental virtuosity balanced by a breezy, backwoods soul; music that is both intellectually stimulating and emotionally soothing.” Tight harmonies weave together ancient songs from the mountains, and new pieces from today. This music will make you pause and rest for a moment, and remember all the good things in life; you'll walk out with a smile, and days later, when you're humming their tunes, you be smiling again. Who could ask for anything more?
+
“Within about eight bars of their first song, there was a stunned silence in the room, and the audience remained captivated to their last note,” Agostino said. “I don’t think I’ve ever witnessed that before. … I know of few duos that have a more unique, compelling sound.”-Tom Agostino,Folk Sessions director,Prescott, AZ
+
The Littlest Birds are David Huebner, cello - David spent most of his childhood studying classical cello, but after a decade of music competitions and orchestral performences (youngest member of The Debut Orchestra, principal cellist for the Disney Young Musicians Symphony Orchestra), he gave it all up to pursue a life in the Sierra Nevada. That life consisted mostly of adventure -- It was during those long winters that he rediscovered music in his own way, playing the guitar and writing songs, and eventually, returning to his beloved cello. Sharon Martinson, banjo - Sharon was born in the winter in the mountains of Wyoming, and her music and songs are ever inspired and shaped by her landscape, its history and her various homes. Sharon is classically trained on the French horn, performing for over two decades, most recently with the Dartmouth Chamber Orchestra. It was a gift from her grandfather that would twist her career. The old banjo sat nearly untouched under her bed in a cardboard box while she completed her doctorate in ecology. The last year of her studies, she heard a banjo being played clawhammer style and was inspired to pick up the instrument. While working on a climate change project at Oregon State University and the Univerisity of California--Santa Cruz, she performed with many musicians and accumulated banjos like some people take in stray cats (Sharon plays a Seth Kimmel custom fretless banjo, an 1800’s Nelson, a plantation-style gourd banjo, a Recording King Madison, and the crown jewel, her dear grandpa's 1800's Washburn).

RUNA is a quintet of very fine musicians from Ireland, the United States, and Canada. Their main singer, Shannon Lambert-Ryan, plays bodhrán and is a very engaging performer with an outstanding voice. Her husband, Fionán de Barra, is an excellent guitarist from Dublin who comes from a musical family. His brother, Cormac, performed at Caltech with Moya Brennan a few years ago. David Curley is a talented multi-instrumentalist (guitar, banjo, mandolin, and bodhrán, among other instruments) from Galway, Ireland, who also sings and step dances along with Shannon. Cheryl Prashker is a versitile percussionist from Montreal who has toured the world and is fun to watch as she tastefully punctuates their music. Their newest member, fiddler Maggie Estes White, is from Kentucky, and though she was steeped in the world of bluegrass, she shows her great flexibilty playing Celtic music.

“To mark the 40th anniversary of the loss of Arabic diva Umm Kulthum (Oum Kalthoum), I had a strong desire to cover one of her most successful songs, ‘Alf Leila wa Leila’ (One Thousand and One Nights), undoubtedly her greatest hit, is far more popular and richer in folklore. This piece is [an] all-time classic that is celebrated across the Arab world, and yet it remains virtually unknown in the rest of the world. So this was an opportunity for me to present this symphonic masterpiece which celebrate the voice of the Arab world’s most popular singer.” - IBRAHIM MAALOUF.
