√ FAR-WEST 2015 SHOWCASES NOW ONLINE; MARKETING YOUR TOUR
The web is extending the reach of performers selected to showcase their music at Folk Alliance. And how we learned that led to an important point.
Performing songwriter Jody Mulgrew was among the artists honored by being chosen to present a performance in a main stage "official showcase" at last month's Folk Alliance Region West — FAR-West – the annual western states / western Canadian provinces event held this year in Oakland, California.
Jody tells us, "My friend John Nowel and I had the privilege of playing to some amazing crowds this last month, including our performance at the 2015 FAR-West Conference. We kicked off the three-nights of music and fun in the Grand Ballroom of the Oakland Marriott, with a 25-minute set for an enthusiastic crowd."
Jody continues, "We were in good company, as each night's showcase featured some of the most exciting up-and-coming talent I've heard in a while, including Freddy & Francine, who rocked the main stage and then treated us to some intimate hotel-room performances early into the morning."

Jody explains, "The sweet folks at KC Cafe Radio have made it available to download. I especially like the performance of 'Tennessee' that happens around 5 min and 20 secs in, and 'Til My Peace Be Made,' which closes-out the performance."
As for Jody Mulgrew, the man is on a roll. He's currently scheduling an album release tour of the West Coast for the end of January / beginning of February. It's especially notable that it "will loosely follow the California Mission Trail, since one mission in particular figured so prominently in the inspiration for 'On the Line' and the new album," says Jody.
And that example raises an important point: always find a "hook" for marketing your tour by personalizing it in some interesting way. People like that. And so do the reporters and assignment editors whose attention you hope to attract to publicize your shows and put paying butts in the venues' seats.

Berklee Online has been shortlisted for the "Reimagine Education Awards" 2015. Everyone knows Berklee College of Music, based in Boston, MA. In recent years, they have aggressively and innovatively developed their web education options for a global base of part-time and full-time students of music, along with students of music production and marketing.
The awards, for which Berklee is a shortlisted finalist, recognize innovative higher education institutions and programs, and will be conveyed in a prestigious event December 5-7. There, in addition to the awards, heavyweight presenters will conduct forums, panels and workshops on the possibilities and future of innovations to reinvent education. More on the conference at:

2nd annual "YOUBLOOM L.A. MUSIC FESTIVAL & CONFERENCE" with the 2015 conference portion of the event scheduled during the day Dec 12 at the Highland Park Ebell Club, and the music venues (all three days /nights) to be situated in the NELA area of Los Angeles including Highland Park, South Pasadena, and Pasadena. Speakers for the conference will be announced in the coming months.
Dublin, Ireland, has seen two annual "Youbloom Festival & Conference" and L.A. gets its second in December (the first US event was in November here last year). The northeast Los Angeles event will bring "three full days of entertainment, industry enlightenment, and more."
Last year, performances filled five venues in Highland Park and Pasadena, hosting more than 60 bands from 11 countries around the world, including those from L.A. and across the US, for "a rockin’ 3 days/nights of live music and learning."
The inaugural 2014 conferences in L.A. and Ireland hosted top-selling artists and professional music industry suits. That would suggest this year will be very worth attending.

2nd annual "SECRET MOUNTAIN IN THE HEART OF THE PLATEAU FESTIVAL," along with vying for the longest name, is a French-language festival of arts & music where families can enjoy French performances inspired by books like "Wapiti" and "Un trésor dans mon jardin" (A Treasure in My Garden). It happens at Centre Cultural Calixa-Lavallée in Montreal, Quebec, Canada.
Secret Mountain is a respected childrens' record label and book publisher / distributor. If you need holiday gifts for small fry, check them out.
They're currently promoting two new TSM titles that won "Parents' Choice Awards."
First is their CD, "Sleep Softly: Classical Lullabies by Brahms, Schubert, Satie, Debussy," which received a Gold Award for music. Secret Mountain tells us, "'Sleep Softly' is our third instalment in our classical music series after 'Listen to the Birds: An Introduction to Classical Music,' and 'Simply Fantastic.'"
Second, Hilary Grist's "Tomorrow is a Chance to Start Over" has received a Recommended Award for storytelling. Vancouver-based indie musician and visual artist Hilary Grist writes, performs and, along with her creative team, spearheads the unique clay animation shown depicted on the cover. "Tomorrow is a Chance to Start Over" has also been nominated for a Canadian Folk Award.
Both new titles were released in 2015 and have inspired many enthusiastic reviews. The Guide has reviewed past releases from Secret Mountain and we definitely liked them.

The 2016 “NAMM SHOW” is the music industry’s biggest annual trade show, music conference, and gathering of music retailers with manufactures and endorsed musicians who very notably perform. It features opportunities for music educators, school administrators, college students, and NAMM Foundation Partners to attend, learn and connect with the music products industry. People in all those categories will be able to register for badges and reserve hotel rooms starting September 30, 2015. Let’s note that playing the NAMM Show really does mean “playing THE NAMM SHOW.” As in, going through the process outlined above, becoming part of the music industry’s most celebrated scene, and enjoying the enhanced credibility that brings. We add that because every year we are surprised by who is sponsoring an event at NAMM, or by who is trying to lure us away from the Big Show to a concurrent show of their own. And well, that’s a happy surprise when it’s one of the first case. And it’s often rolling our eyes in surprise at the second case; that includes wondering how anyone doing an unaffiliated performance expects the NAMM crowd to leave expensive parking to drive to their guerrilla show, then hope to find a space in the garage (and pay again) back at the NAMM Show.
It may help to know that NAMM has a simple and clear policy about such things. Here it is:
“Planning to host an event at the NAMM Show? This is just a friendly reminder that when creating and promoting your event during NAMM in and around Anaheim, there are a couple of rules to follow.
√ “Events taking place at an Anaheim venue are only approved for use by NAMM member companies.
√ “The use of the NAMM name, logo, and/or font in the title of your event is prohibited. The NAMM name may be used in your promotion only to reference that your event is occurring during the dates of NAMM show. This will ensure everybody is clear about who is producing the event. All NAMM produced events take place at the Anaheim Convention Center, Grand Plaza, and Hilton or Marriott. Other events are not official NAMM events and should not be promoted as such.

√ Lenise Bent
Lenise Bent is one of the first women engineers in the industry and honed her skills on many iconic records including "Aja" by Steely Dan, "Breakfast in America" by Supertramp, and "Tusk" by Fleetwood Mac, as well as being the first woman to receive a platinum album for engineering for Blondie’s “AutoAmerican” record which included “The Tide is High” and the very first hit rap recording, “Rapture.”
Lenise is also a post production audio professional, specializing in shooting and editing foley for several films and animated series such as “RoboCop,” “Street Sharks,” and “Extreme Ghostbusters,” creating foreign music and effects tracks for several popular TV series and films and has traveled the world for Dreamworks supervising the foreign dialogue recording and producing the vocals for such animated features as “Shrek” and “Shrek 2.”
She is also a guest lecturer for several audio schools and programs and is an audio restoration and repair specialist, recently restoring the audio for the photo exhibit “Who Shot Rock & Roll” for the Annenberg Space for Photography among other challenges.
Lenise is a long-standing member of NARAS and the Producers & Engineers Wing of the Recording Academy, the Audio Engineering Society (AES), Association of Recorded Sound Collectors (ARSC), the prestigious Hollywood Sapphire Group, The Blues Foundation, and Women’s Audio Mission (WAM). She is on the Board of Directors for Los Angeles Women in Music (LAWIM). Currently, she is producing and engineering several projects for both up and coming artists as well as seasoned professionals.
Lenise believes ”there are only two kinds of music… good and bad. I love working on all styles… as long as it’s in the first group.”

Eva Reistad is a Los Angeles based engineer/songwriter who is currently serving as Session Manager and one of the in-house engineers at Kingsize Soundlabs. She’s worked in a variety of studios since she moved to LA four years ago- including Nightbird Recording Studios, Fourth Street Recording, RMC Studios, and others. Some of her credits include Matt Skiba, Miley Cyrus, Avril Lavigne, and Vetiver.
