ALSO IN THIS EDITION, we wrap-up our detailed and extensive coverage that's brought you hundreds and hundreds of concerts, club gigs, concerts-in-the-park, and many, many additional events in recent weeks. We may make just a few more additions to add late-breaking events through this coming Sunday, July 9. We may even publish another version of this closing calendar before the weekend is upon us, if the late additions warrant it.

After that, it's back to being all about MUSIC NEWS. Our # 5 events feature gets into that, what we mean by it, where you come in with info you want to contribute, and all that.

Brace yourself: it's BANJO, July 5th

Last year, we were a big fan of something that's happily returning as an annual multi-day/night series. It'll feature FIVE performance-interviews, starting July 5th, all on "Watching the Hawks." First, who's on, which day, followed by the details.

* July 5, HUBBY JENKINS from THE CAROLINA CHOCOLATE DROPS opens the show's annual music series, with banjo and a chat about roots-Americana music! (Learn about Hubby at http://www.hubbyjenkins.com)

* July 6, lovely singer-songwriter KRIS ANGEL performs on piano and vocals, backed by cello. Her interview gets into what it's like to be an NYC-based musician, and her performance includes her song "Built this House."

* July 7 brings acoustic and electric guitar from punk rock icon CJ RAMONE, who fronted THE RAMONES from '89-'96. He has a new solo album just out (his third), titled "American Beauty," on which he covers a TOM WAITS song.

* July 10 it's the all-girl band PASTEL FELT, one of LA Weekly's "top ten bands to watch in 2017," for which the "WTH" TV show's cast journeyed to L.A. to get the segment. In addition to performing, the band discusses the difference between L.A. bands and bands from everywhere else.

* July 11 is Colorado-based group THE FLOWBOTS. But don't run screaming when we tell you their very melodic music somehow still categorizes them as a hip hop outfit, because you need to learn about them. That's because they epitomize useful activism in the Denver community, bringing everything from ballet to children's art programs to their community. Quite an interview.

The show is "WATCHING THE HAWKS" which airs on TV and ONLINE, multiple times each day, five days a week. Reliably a "no BS" daily program that covers what mainstream media won't — including runaway arms spending and central emphasis on militarism at all levels of too many nations' governments (especially ours), the highly informative show always brings plenty of charmingly useful and entertaining information, whether that's gements about space exploration (where we could be spending some of that money we waste on endless wars), or little triumphs amidst the challenges of the arts.

The lil' series, which they dub "WTH Strikes a Chord" (WTH for "Watching the Hawks") airs several times each day on RT America. Hosted by Tyrel Ventura, Tabetha Wallace, and Sean Stone, the on-air hosts are giddy about this chance to emphasize music as their deep dive into what's usually a smattering of coverage of the arts.

Catch each day's half-hour show (with multiple repeat airings) on cable, satellite, or in the simulcast online, at the following times each day (weekdays), all times PDT:

3 pm; 6:29 pm; 11:29 pm; with morning repeats of the previous day's show at 4:29 am, (some days at 7:30 am, check listings), and 9:29 am.

While you're there (on TV or online), look for "On Contact with Chris Hedges" (the Pulitzer-winning journalist who dives into stories that mainstream media's corporate sponsors will not allow). And for documentary buffs, they air DAILY documentaries in half-hour segments, many of them award-winners. And absolutely be sure to catch "Redacted Tonight" hosted by Lee Camp with his very capable gang of comics — they skewer the bloviating peacocks in the news (including the media itself) better'n anybody. And you might like economist-magician-comic Max Keiser and his "Keiser Report," and the new host who's running "Boom Bust," since those are two of the only shows on TV that explain macroeconomics — so clearly that you'll know exactly why you want to slap a bankster. And Peter Lavelle's "Cross Talk" always has a good panel. And there's "World's Apart" which challenges the American ethnocentricism that always gets us to that default militarism. Check it all out after you catch the WTH music specials. (Just don't get all distracted exploring and miss the music!)

* ONLINE, it's www.rt.com, and note something:

Look at the esoteric top toolbar at the top of the page, and click your way in to the live broadcast from RT America. Otherwise you'll end up with other live programming in any of many languages from somewhere else in the world if you play bull in a china shop.

* Don't expect a cowboy / western band. That's a stoic nope and a modern n'uh-uh.
* Western Standard Time has a longer name that appends the two words, "Ska Orchestra" — it's the world’s premier "Jamaican Jazz Orchestra" — and it's "DUKE ELLINGTON meets Jamaica: the big band jazz arrangements of the 1940s colliding with the sound of early Jamaica." So it's best discribed as a kind of innovative retro jazz — Jamaican jazz. And people are flocking to it, by the thousands.
* There are more than 20 world-class jazz musicians in a “standard” Western Standard Time performance.
* The band's featured performers include Grammy noms and winners, and some have performed on Oscar, Grammy, and Emmy television broadcasts, and/or played with international stars and on major motion picture soundtracks.

* Bring a folding lawn or beach chair. If you sit on a blanket, you will not be able to see.

* Best to ride the Red / Purple Line light rail to Westlake/MacArthur Park Station, and allow time to walk around the bottom end of the park, through the tunnel and into the side that's isolated by the elevated road; that's how you reach the band shell.

It should be "National Space & Exploration Day," but the corporatists are too cheap to allow our government to declare any more holidays. They claim it costs them too much money in "lost productivity," even though consumer spending is through the roof on any holiday when the stores and amusement parks and eateries are open. We have always been BIG advocates of making July 20th a holiday. Really now, how many times have humans set foot on a world other than our own? Yeah. So today we'll think of you, Buzz Aldrin, and all your Apollo astronaut colleagues, and Buzz, of your continuing advocacy for returning to a robust space program that GOES somewhere! Used to be that festivals took the middle of summer off, and returned with vigor in the fall. Maybe year-arond school schedules changed everything so that people really aren't gone for the summer anymore. Or maybe too many years of Big Oil extortion ruined the idea of being away on a summer vacation at all. Or maybe the music itself became "destination tourism." Whatever it is? Nowadays, the festival momentum just keeps rollin' along.

WHERE THE GUIDE IS GUIDING: YOU WON'T NEED INDY'S BULLWHIP. BRING THE HAT.


Surely we DID say "that's it" for our concert calendar. As in, we said it several times recently (going back throughout the last three months, even to when we temporarily started listing alllllllllll these multitudinous events in conjunction with the arrival of festival season). Surely, you saw how massively inclusive it is to put together a set of descriptive listings of all the acoustic and Folk-Americana doin's, when we do it. So it shouldn't be a shock when we repeat again that we just can't keep doing all the other things we do with the Guide if we try to keep doing just THAT one thing.

So hit the claxon, bo'sun. We are clearing the decks for action. The banjo turrets, and the big ones with the twelve string fret boards poking out of them, will all be good to swivel around and set sights again now — without getting all tangled up in blue tarps (Dylanfest in the rain, if you were there). And we'll get past the piled-up cyber stacks that kept us from seeing over all the event notices and flyers that multiply like rabbits and keep piling-up, waiting for us to get 'em organized, formatted and listed.

They just walked the plank, me hardies!

So, decks cleared, we're sailing forth in search of the MUSIC NEWS once again. That includes heavy emphasis on the music makers; their collaborations; recordings; tours; special projects; thoughts along the way; the new, old and rediscovered gear that folks are talking about; and 'purt near everything that pertains to all that.

We'll soon be back to offering our previews and reviews of audio and video recordings you can buy, and giving you our heads-up about things you could easily miss and wouldn't want to — including ticket alerts, special screenings, and lots more.

And all with our usual attention and devotion to the Americana music genres — blues, bluegrass, Cajun, cowboy, Celtic, Cape Breton, Quebecois, new-old-trad-alt-post-Folk, old-time (good time), sea songs, mountain music, the best of the singer-songwriter acoustic renaissance, the exciting roots-motivated bands out there, and plenty more. You already know that honky tonk gets in the mix, even though it's not strictly acoustic — because it needs and deserves a place at the table — and its roots surely are cowboy.

The geographical origin of the sounds we'll cover (with plenty of music video and audio links) ranges from the islands where the palm trees sway; to the green Northeast; to the desert Southwest; to the plains of the buffalo and the Native American flute; to the cattle drive and the pioneers. We'll run the rivers with Lewis & Clark; journey along the tow path of the canal boats; gaze back over the stern from the Texas deck at the riverboat's paddlewheel; set the topsail and trim the jib; we'll lay two long blasts on the big steam whistle and ride up around the bend behind (or aboard) the high-stepping steam locomotive. We'll drink the lemonade springs on the Big Rock Candy Mountain; we'll greet the sunrise atop a lofty peak, from the Blue Ridge to the Rockies, from the High Sierra to the Cascades. We'll sing love songs, camp songs, travelin' songs and sowin' seeds songs, and when we're done we'll write some more. So come on along.

We'll explore the essential music of protest and dissent, of labor organizing and resistance, or organizing and winning the vote. of worker's rights and economic justice. Because all of it is the home turf of Folk-Americana music, and it's the fertile ground being tilled by today's singer-songwriters.

We'll tell you about the luring acoustic sounds rendered by the masters of banjo, of mandolin, accordion, harmonica; of Dobro, resonator, steel guitar, six and twelve string guitars, and ukulele; of fiddle & viola, big ol' bass guitar, cello, the standup and the doghouse bass, and more. And we'll mosey over to the pedal steel and the Lou'siana roadhouse piano and invest in the tip jar for an extended session there. And you know all those things are pout there, because it's what you've come here to find, and left satiated, many times before. The nail kegs are still in a circle around the checker board, and the jug are ready to be played as soon as everybody drinks 'em.

Yep, we have indeed journey this direction before. We've been negotiatin' these woods n' calls n' hollers for a long time — that is, when we don't get all-caught-up in publishing the most enormous Folk-Americana music calendar anywhere.

And that brings us full circle. Enjoy the cool evenings and waning light of our events' listings', like a summer crescent moon on the deep blue water, through this weekend. Sure, we'll throw-in some recommended events from time to time after this, but to inform the news stories.

So catch the last rays before the sunset. Finish up ol' cookie's plate o' beans and cornbread. It'll soon enough be time to break out the things with strings, and pick 'n grin around the campfire, with no worry how dark it gets beyond the margin of firelight. And when the trail ride has parted from the stock, back at the corral, and it's time to head for the home ranch? Then count on the next full moon to shine bright, lighting the return of (drum roll, maestro) our purpose here — to focus on, report and inform ABOUT, and show our readers our shared devotion TO, the NEWS of this big, wide, tuneful Americana music world, and the CELEBRATION of the music and the folks who make it for all to enjoy!

Ahead in the Guide...

THE COMING SUMMER...

We'll keep you updated on MUSIC NEWS, all the festivals that feature Folk-Americana and/or acoustic music, and we'll bring you plenty of feature stories on whose in the studio, who's collaborating or touring with who, and what they're working on. And we'll continue to bring you news of special events, along with some previews, reviews and select "picks" (the recommendations kind, not the kind you use on strings; we've never had any of those printed with our logo, though we would if someone wanted to sponsor that.)

That said... contrary to appearances the last month or so, we're really NOT going back into the daily music calendar bid'ness. But there is SUCH an irresistible bridge of tunefulness from all the spring weekends of festivals until summer heat abates them, so we ARE doing full-blown music calendars through the end of the July 4th holiday.

We all know that if you rely on corporate mainstream media for your supposed news, you'd miss all these things.

Along with 'purt near everything else we bring you.

It certainly does seem like Big Corporate Media only promotes and reports on soundalike pop pablum with incongruously unnecessary vocal gymnastics... we don't do that, and we wouldn't cover that stuff even if they didn't.

But the point is, big corporate media just plain refuses things and then claims those things are "non-commercial." (Which might explain why cable news, exclusively sponsored by Big Pharma ads, is so bad.) Big media certainly refuses to cover real organic acoustic music made without loops of electrocution sound effects — from Frankenstein's lightning storm or wherever they find that annoying stuff.

So just hit the mute button on them and turn here. We cover all kinds 'o real acoustic music and offer plenty of links to hear it in our news and reviews features. And, yes, we'll feature some select picks of concerts, etc., as NEWS FEATURES, as we navigate the summer together.
