A "MUSIC-ON-TV" ALERT & REVIEW:
Jeff Lynne's ELO

ELO recently played the Forum and delighted the packed house. Some are calling it the best L.A. concert of the year.

The band's 2017 concert at Wembley Stadium was part of the same enormous tour. It is currently running on Showtime, where we stumbled upon it one morning, ridiculously early.

Watch it if you can, but read-on for a review of that band and how it epitomized an era that it's now helping to revive.

ON TEE VEE... If you have the Showtime channels on your cable or satellite or whatever web package, it's scheduled one more time, this coming Monday, 9:50-11:50 am (Pacific) on SHO2H.

This is an exceptionally well-produced video version. Of course nothing's ever the same as being there, large or small venue.

This formidable-sized troupe is back out there with the name, "Jeff Lynne's ELO," to celebrate the countless accomplishments of the group's founder. Melding their individual musicality into a collective, they re-birth the era of melodic orchestral rock with integral vocal harmonies.

The large cast of musicians includes a bevy of lovely young women cellists and violinists, and Lynne plays acoustic six-string throughout.

They delight audiences with the lineup of original ELO hits and more. They deliver one of Lynne's songs that was a hit for the Traveling Wilburys, and a bit of his more recent material.

The Wembley show closed with "Roll Over Beethoven," in which the cellists and violinists showed their chops every bit as much as those playing the more contemporary instruments.

The sound in the video concert is crisp and fresh, and every lyric can be understood. Best of all, this is a welcome relief from today's atonal singer-songwriter sameness (like that cliche of a blonde girl-with-guitar on the Nationwide insurance commercials).

Plus, Lynne's masterfully crafted music is needed more than ever in a world that backs everything with one-note drum thudding commercia-voiced rap-hop.

But this is more than relief from today's ubiquitous awfulness.

This is real music proving it has a real audience. The visible audience demographics at Wembley prove that and defy what Big Music would have us believe. Regardless of what commercial corporatization of soundalike dreadful crap -- that always misses its goal of lowest-common-denominator "entertainment" -- this proves you can pack a stadium in 2018 with retro-based music that's fresh as a daisy.

The wall-to-wall Wembley crowd included a solid cross-sectional representation of everybody -- school-age kids, enraptured teenage girls on their boyfriend's shoulders, young 20-somethings singing every lyric, and yes, the inevitable nostalgic gray-haired boomers remembering their youth and their dance steps. That audience is unified in roaring their approval, appreciation, and adoration throughout.

For any reader unfamiliar with our use of the term "orchestral rock," it was once a dominant genre. Go find some Supertramp. Some Moody Blues, some Emmerson, Lake and Palmer. More ELO. And on the folk side, the live concert albums by John Denver, when he took a full symphony orchestra on the road with him -- and introduced the Zen of environmental consciousness to a world that was merely complaining about pollution.

Meantime, search the cyber tubes for Rick Wakeman's "Journey to the Center of the Earth," and "Myths and Legends of King Arthur and the Knights of the Round Table." Guaranteed, that'll make you want to dredge the record store bins for the complete multi-disc theme-albums of those and his other projects.

Along the way, don't forget ELO, which stood for Electric Light Orchestra. "Electric?" you say, in the Acoustic Americana Music Guide? Just goes to show how good they are.

Jeff Lynne is deservedly raking-in the bucks on this tour. And he is reawakening the world, imparting that creative, immersive, and amazing were once prevalent.

Catch the Showtime screening. It'll make you want to bring a full repertoire of an almost-lost artfulness back into your own world.
