.
.

Events from Jan 12 through Jan 20, with updates and MANY added photos beyond what's in here, are in the edition at: https://acousticamericana.blogspot.com/2020/01/a-week-of-concerts-and-events-before.html

=÷=÷=÷=÷=÷=÷=÷=÷=÷=÷=

Here is this edition as published (and updated while it was still the current source for things).

=÷=÷=÷=÷=÷=÷=÷=÷=÷=÷=

New decade. New ways. This edition is the last time we'll look like this. We're taking the Guide away from a "calendar-centered" format, because organizing and presenting things this way devours all the time we need to report NEWS, do interviews, reviews, and write FEATURE STORIES about things you want to know.

As always, we remain centered on three things that we're re-stating afresh for new times:

1) news of acoustic and Americana music and musicians, the craft and art of performance, instruments, innovations, a committment to celebrating authenticity, explorations that rediscover hand-crafted old ways, and an utter rejection of roboticized trendiness and cyberized lunacy; and all based from out there on the scene;

2) news of the arts scene in Southern California and elsewhere that's relevant to roots or acoustic music, recognizing that the folks who like those genres also like lotsa creative good stuff;

3) news on a broad spectrum of topics that excite the passions, joie de vivre, and built-in need for action on the parts of artists and art lovers, and that can contribute to intellectual comprehension, de-bunking of BS, and advancing human understanding, and dammit, love.

That brings us to what's below, and changing.

The EVENTS herein are those we already had compiled until we necessarily shifted our format. Only a very limited number of additional events will be added to the listings below, as they come-in... otherwise, upcoming events will be reported as NEWS FEATURES -- in an e-zine format, NOT a chronological calendar -- as the Guide enters yet another new decade of serving you, our treasured readers.

So here's one last tango for the old ways before they get the boot, one last chance to write in the graduating class's yearbook before it goes on the shelf. One for our baby, one more for the road...
___

Oh, geez... old habits die hard. Make that die harder. We've gone back in, several times, and added whole great big bunches more events in UPDATES as recently as Saturday, January 11th, at  9:35 am

So there IS even more here for you... !

First up, here's what's

Ongoing PODCAST, on-demand:
"RECORDING ARTISTS: RADICAL WOMEN" is a new podcast series from the Getty Museum in Los Angeles. In it, art historian HELEN MOLESWORTH explores the lives and work of six artists — ALICE NEEL, LEE KRASNER, BETYE SAAR, HELEN FRANKENTHALER, YOKO ONO, and EVA HESSE.
*  What was it like to be a woman making art during the feminist and civil rights movements? In this season of "Recording Artists," Molesworth delves into their lives and careers, spanning several generations. Hear them describe, in their own words, their work, relationships, and feelings about the ongoing march of feminism. Contemporary artists and art historians join the conversation, offering their own perspectives on the recordings and exploring what it meant—and still means—to be a woman and an artist. Share this with one who'll appreciate it.
*   HERE'S THE LINK. The whole series is here in individial episodes so you can pace yourself or binge it. You'll hear rare audiotaped interviews and fresh perspectives on what it meant — and still means — to be a woman making art:

Ongoing, through Feb 23; FREE:
11am-5 pm - "FALLEN FRUIT: SUPERSHOW!" at PDC Gallery, 8687 Melrose Av, West Hollywood CA
*  Runs Sun, Nov 24 through Feb 23; free.
*  Opening day Sunday features outdoor jamming, preceded by an artist talk with FALLEN FRUIT (aka DAVID BURNS and AUSTIN YOUNG), and Young will be taking his trademark portraits of whoever wants one inside the installation, plus music and apparently, cheerleaders.
*  This is "A gorgeous mile of fruit and flower garland wallpaper in a gradient of saturated hues containing within its two story installation multiple scenarios and vignettes of photography and ceramic, faux Grecian luxury statues, gilded mirrors, chaises and sundry objects. All of this exists in the mode of a secular temple to beauty, as well as a sort of public living room where communities are formed through the universal language of shareable fruit."
*  Might be the right thing for a memorable date.
___

(Plenty of updates since the last edition)

Again, We're taking the Guide away from a "calendar-centered" format, because organizing and presenting things that way devours all the time we need to report NEWS. See the intro at the top of this edition. The EVENTS herein are those compiled until we necessarily shifted our format. Only a very limited number of additional events will be added below, as they come-in... otherwise, upcoming events will be reported as NEWS FEATURES as the Guide enters yet another new decade of serving you, our treasured readers. Below is "old format," with the emphasis that you won't see after this edition...

We often include a lil' piece on "this day in history" for whatever date it is. You've probably discovered some of those. Sometimes we feature a quote from a person born on that date.

Often, that stuff gets added the morning of that day. Humor us and read it, okay?

Wed, Jan 8:
THOUGHT FOR TODAY from one born on this date...
"It is better to sleep on things beforehand than lie awake about them afterwards."
-- Baltasar Gracian, philosopher and writer (born Jan 8, 1601, died 1658).
(Thanks to A.Word.A.Day.)

___

Today would have been the 85th birthday of ELVIS PRESLEY (born Jan 8, 1935), "whose musical career began when he recorded a song for his mother’s birthday," as Garrison Keillor reminds us.
___

Wed, Jan 8; Tue-Fri, Jan 7-10; TRADE SHOW:
Annual "CES - CONSUMER ELECTRONICS SHOW" in Las Vegas presents, exhibits, demonstrates and gives "test drives" of all the revolutionarily new, slightly new, and seemingly new (inside "new" glittery cases) stuff from all the world's tech manufacturers that aim to capture your money. As always, you'll be craftily convinced you can't live without something you didn't know exists. And you'll be deluded into believing it serves you, instead of the other way around. CES sells devices -- because you've already bought the hipness of hype.
*  DAY ONE at CES... the scattalogical day...
■  Waverly Labs "Ambassador" is a pair of over over-the-ear language translators for $179. If you can get someone to wear the other one -- someone whose language is as inscrutable to you as yours is to them, like the cab driver or hotel front desk person or waiter -- you can get someplace, or secure some kind of lodgings, or order something you can probably eat, anywhere in the world. Or you could just be like every person from every other country on Earth, and put yourself out enough to learn another language.
■  The "Roll Bot" fetches a roll of toilet paper if you're, uh, sitting on the can with your phone in your hand and telling the program how helpless you are. Let's be clear: it won't bring you a beer or a sandwich or let you stay on your fat ass and bring you the tv remote. It only transports ticker tape and tracks you down while obviously carrying it. If you buy that device, change your social media status to "pathetic."
■  A new robotic dog is four hundred bucks. It claims to be companionship that you don't need to feed, and no doghair. No word on cyberslobber. Maybe you can get your '70s doll that cries and poops to ride bareback on the thing. Or spend the $400 on actually going out with a human date.
___

Wed, Jan 8; GROUP CALL:
5 pm (Pacific) - "NO WAR WITH IRAN DAY" emergency group call with US Senators BERNIE SANDERS and ELIZABETH WARREN, Members of Congress RO KHANNA and BARBARA LEE, and leading experts on foreign policy, in an emergency call to stop Trump's war with Iran.
*  RSVP HERE to get the number for the call, which takes place TONIGHT.
*  Breaking news may bring word of escalation between the U.S. and Iran; no one can be sure what will happen next.
*  But we can push for diplomacy and de-escalation and not let a Trumpertantrum provoke a devastating war.
*  Yes, competing Presidential Candidates Sen. Sanders and Sen. Warren have BOTH signed-on as guest speakers.
*  This call will also prepare anyone who wishes to take part tomorrow, Thu, Jan 9, in nationwide "anti-war, pro-diplomacy majority" demonstrations of Americans making themselves visible in actions across the country. Thursday already has OVER 200 EVENTS with more being added every hour for "NO WAR WITH IRAN DAY."

*  Assassinations don't make us safer. Trump’s unhinged foreign policy has needlessly endangered the lives of U.S. troops and Iraqi, Iranian, and countless other civilians. This is the crucial moment to declare, "We will not be led into another illegal war."
*  While climate change deniers continue to pillage the planet, the warconomy's merchants of death accelerate destruction and suck-up the resources needed to save the only home we've got. Finally, people in the US and around the globe are tired of war, and want to work together because we're all in this together.
*  American military families have endured multiple deployments and multiple generations in the same conflicts, and to what end?
*  Iranian, Iraqi and Afghani families in the United States worry for their loved ones back home and for their safety here, amidst rampant xenophobia.

*  If we’ve learned our lessons from Iraq and Afghanistan and Yemen and global endless war, we cannot be led into another costly, unnecessary war of choice. And we cannot allow our neighbors to be targeted by law enforcement. We cannot allow ourselves to be divided by a glory-hungry lout.
*  RSVP to get the number for the call, at: https://act.moveon.org/survey/moveon-rapid-response-call-nowarwithiran/

The beauty business is about to get ugly as the proposal puts Mia and Mel's lifelong friendship to the ultimate test.

Fri, Jan 10, on TV:
5 pm-7 pm & 10 pm-midnight - "McCARTHY" premieres on the PBS documentary series, "THE AMERICAN EXPERIENCE" locally in Los Angeles on PBS WORLD channel.
*  "McCarthy" chronicles the rise and fall of Joseph McCarthy, the Wisconsin senator who came to power after a stunning victory in an election no one thought he could win. Once in office, he declared that there was a vast conspiracy threatening America—emanating not from a rival superpower, but from within.
*  In a dark series of events -- that are chillingly echoing in our time -- free of restraint or oversight, he conducted a crusade against those he accused of being enemies of the state, launching and pursuing a chilling campaign marked by groundless accusations, bullying intimidation, grandiose showmanship and cruel victimization.
*  Before Joseph McCarthy first waved around his ever-changing list of supposed Communists in the State Department at a Republican dinner in Wheeling, West Virginia on February 9, 1950, the Cold War red scare to which he gave his name had been producing headlines—and victims. McCarthyism, as we understand it today, encompassed much more than the antics of one notorious senator from Wisconsin. It was the longest-lasting and most widespread episode of political repression in American history.
*  Anti-communist political repression went far beyond Senator Joseph McCarthy, and threatened the very freedoms and protections guaranteed by the Bill of Rights.
*  If you wonder how America can produce a clever, conniving, self-promoting demagogue, Joe McCarthy was the prototype.
*  REPEATS on PBS WORLD channel: Fri 1/10, 5-7 pm & 10 pm-midnight; Sat 1/11, 6-8 am & noon-2 pm.
*  AVAILABLE ON-DEMAND only through Feb 2nd.

IF YOU'RE LOOKING FOR 80° (F) TEMPS THIS WEEKEND, you won't find 'em in sunny Southern California.  But you WILL find them in (brace yourself) West Virginia. In the Appalachian Mountains. The land of bluegrass music, where they should be huddled around the stove to pick banjos in January. Seems we don't need to slap climate-change-deniers up 'side the head. Nature is doing it, anyway.

Sun, Jan 12, on TV:
12:30 pm-2 pm - BLUESMAN GARY CLARK, JR gets a solid performance-interview-bio treatment on today's "CBS SUNDAY MORNING," which aired too damn early at 6 am on L.A.'s network flagship. (Fortunately, you get another chance.)
*  Featured are Clark's phenomenal playing from a young age to the present, accolades from longtime music icons, his supportive parents when he began at age 12, his road to success, and Clark at home with his Australian model wife and their young children. That, btw, is on their beautiful ranch in the Texas hill country near his Austin birthplace... and there the story includes the racism that touched his childhood and resurfaced recently in the form of a redneck ranch neighbor -- which is why the title track of his latest album is "This Is My Land."
*  If you pay for the online "CBSN" package, you can catch it on demand. If you don't, and your cable or satellite package has it, watch on the POPHD channel.
*  Today's show also has a splendid story on the super-intelligent octopus, and a closing segment with kangaroos on the beach in New South Wales, fleeing the apocalyptic Aussie fires.

*  SLACK KEY -- Hawaiian "ki ho'alu" is one of the great acoustic guitar traditions in the world. Played from the heart and soul through the fingers and flowing with vivid tropical images, the festival lets you listen and learn the fascinating history of ki ho’alu guitar and the musical pioneers who helped shape its sound and legacy.
*  Produced by Kala Koa Entertainment, the festival includes an "Island Marketplace."
*  Showcasing GRAMMY-winning slack key guitarists, the best hula dancers in the world, special guest performers, and the free-to-the-public Island Marketplace, this is one of the most acclaimed concerts to leave the islands.
*  The first of its kind anywhere outside of Hawaii, the Southern California Slack Key Festival continues to set milestones for Hawaiian music on the mainland. Since its debut in 2008, it has garnered a huge loyal following, creating, cultivating, and renewing interest in Hawaii and its music.
* This year’s line-up includes JOHN KEAWE, JERRY SANTOS, KAMUELA KIMOKEO, THE LIM FAMILY, IKAIKA MARZO, BOBBY MODEROW, JEFF PETERSON, ANTHONY PFLUKE, and BOBBY INGANO.
*  Ki ho'alu literally means "loosen the key." It is the Hawaiian language name for the solo finger-picked style unique to Hawaii. In this tradition, the strings (or "keys") are "slacked" to produce many different tunings, which usually contain a major chord, or a chord with a major 7th note, or sometimes one with a 6th note in it. Each tuning produces a lingering sound behind the melody and has a characteristic resonance and fingering, with the thumb playing the bass while the other fingers play the melody and improvise in a finger-picked style.
*  How does the distinctive sound of slack key music fit into the fabric of Hawaiian music and culture? Watch this video and learn more about this beautiful generations-old art form – https://vimeo.com/155399448.
*  In addition to the concert, an Island Marketplace – free to the public – takes place from 11 am-5 pm. You can browse a variety of island-themed gifts, home décor, accessories, apparel, and more. Plus, there's Hawaiian food, authentic island-style shave ice, and outdoor entertainment.

Monday
_______________________

Today is January 20th. On this day 75 years ago, the Red Army found and liberated the starving and abused survivors of the Nazi atrocity named Auschwitz. With anti-Semitism specifically,  and intolerance generally, both on the rise in America, the Auschwitz-Birkenau concentration camp and industrial-scale murder complex stands to remind us all of what is at the inevitable end of that kind of toxic thinking.
___

IN AMERICA every four years, as determined by the US constitution, January 20th is Inauguration Day. That's when the four-year term begins for an American president supposedly elected by the people the previous November, but actually elected in December by the tiny number of partisan political elite who comprise that election cycle's Electoral College.

Today in 2020 happens to be the Monday of the three-day weekend when the birthday of the late Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. is celebrated as a national holiday for federal employees and state, county and municipal employees in some jurisdictions. Now, since Lincoln's and Washington's Birthdays were dropped as separate holidays and amalgamated into the nebulousity of "Presidents Day," there is no valid argument that they "can't afford another holiday." Adding MLK Day and mashing the great presidents into a day with Millard Fillmore, George W. Bush, and the other bozos, means that refusing to give you the day off today, or holiday pay for working, isn't a capitalistic thing. It's a racial thing, and we're calling them out on it.

THOUGHT FOR TODAY from one born on this date...

"The true axis of evil in America is the brilliance of our marketing combined with the stupidity of our people."

"[F]reedom isn't free. It shouldn't be a bragging point that "Oh, I don't get involved in politics," as if that makes you somehow cleaner. No, that makes you derelict of duty in a republic. Liars and panderers in government would have a much harder time of it if so many people didn't insist on their right to remain ignorant and blindly agreeable."

-- Bill Maher, comedian, actor, and writer (born Jan 20, 1956)

Today is January 21. History will mark this as the day the Senate trial of impeached President Donald John Trump begins.

THOUGHT FOR TODAY from one born on this date...

"Those who invalidate reason ought seriously to consider whether they argue against reason with or without reason."

and,

"In those parts of the world where learning and science has prevailed, miracles have ceased; but in those parts of it as are barbarous and ignorant, miracles are still in vogue."

-- Ethan Allen
(born Jan 21, 1738, died 1789), American Revolutionary War general whose Green Mountain Boys (proto-Green Berets, developed using Allen's original ideas) captured British Ft. Ticonderoga, mightiest fortress in North America -- without firing a shot. (Ticonderoga's captured cannons enabled George Washington's Continental Army to continue against the world's mightiest empire and eventually win American independence.)

Interesting, isn't it, to compare those throughout history who became famous for working, developing and honing their talent, ability, and skill to become accomplished, versus today's headline-grabbing, bloviating dimwits who are simply famous for being famous.
___

Here are today's events.

Tue & Wed, Jan 21 & 22:
Pianist JOLYNN J. CHIN, here from Malaysia thanks to last week's NAMM Show, plays gigs at a pair of L.A. venues. She's marvelous. Catch her while you can. Details below.
*  Jan 21st, she plays TR!P in Santa Monica CA
*  Jan 22nd, she's at the Silver Lake Lounge in Silver Lake (Los Angeles) CA
___

Tue, Jan 21:
9:15 pm-10:15 pm -  Pianist JOLYNN J. CHIN plays TR!P Santa Monica, 2101 Lincoln Bl, Santa Monica CA 90405; https://www.tripsantamonica.com/
*  We discovered her performing for Steinway piano at the 2020 NAMM Show. From a distance, we were hearing an adaptation of Bach’s famous "Toccata and Fugue in D minor" with a hint of her signature jazz rhythms and modern bold sounds. Moving toward the source, we encountered a large, transfixed crowd. Turns out it was Jolynn performing, live, her 2018 debut single, “Toccata.”
*  “Toccata” was a hit that garnered many positive reviews in magazines and media outlets including "Applause to the Musician" (USA), "One Song Magazine" (INDIA), "Asian Journeys" (SINGAPORE), and tvSarawak.com (MALAYSIA). Here's a quote from one of those reviews: “The best word to describe her personality on the ivory keys is PASSIONATELY BOLD. You will be taken away each time she hits a key on the piano” – New Sarawak Tribune.
The GUIDE, experiencing her live, is similarly impressed.
*  She is a wonderfully talented classical-crossover pianist known for her classical virtuosic arrangements, amazing piano dexterity, and eclectic blends of classical cross-over styles inclusive of pop and jazz elements.
*  Jolynn’s latest album, "Beyond Classical," an EP, was recently considered for the 62nd Grammy Awards, in the category of "Best Contemporary Instrumental Album."
*   “It is rarely where we can get the best from both worlds and this album is a gift for the sophisticated classical music listeners with a flair for entertainment.” -- Dimitar Kovachev, writer, composer and arranger.
*  Jolynn worked with many renowned musicians including music producer Roger Montejano, a member of the Grammy Recording Academy in NYC, and involved also the work of mastering engineers Mike Couzzi and Howie Weinberg, who have previously worked with Nirvana, Red Hot Chilli Peppers and Metallica, among many other acclaimed international acts.
*  “She hit those piano notes with perfection. Her mesmerizing piano tunes were so infectious it caught the crowd in awe.” – Kuching Borneo Blog.
*  Born in Sarawak, Malaysia, Jolynn started her music education at the early age of 5. Classically trained on the piano for many years, she has been under the tutelage of Dr. Nicholas Ong, DMA graduate from The Juilliard School.
*  Jolynn has also studied under acclaimed concert pianists including Andrew Brownell, champion of the 2005 J.N. Hummel Competition, and Li Ming Qiang, winner of the 4th Chopin International Competition in 1960.
*  She has won several prizes in competitions internationally, and was awarded the Gold Prize at the Asia International Piano Academy Festival Competition. She has performed at a vast array of prominent venues and events, including the 2020 NAMM Show for Steinway piano.
*  Her classy style and aura of performance resonates with a style that touches on equal parts originality and familiarity, giving her audience a taste of something fresh yet still identifiable. Her music is also reminiscent of personal artist influences including Maksim, Havasi, and Peter Bence, among others.
*  Catch her while you can. She has only two L.A. performances in different venues, Jan 21 & 22.
*  Free show/no cover, but 1 drink minimum.

* This is one of those listings when you say, "Oh, somebody made a big mistake! HE isn't playing THERE!" Well, he is, honest and truly.
ERIC ANDERSEN’S voice, songs, guitar and piano-playing created a career that's spanned over 45 years. He has recorded 25 albums of original songs, and made numerous tours of North America, Europe and Japan.
*  His songs have been recorded and performed by world-renown artists including Ricky Nelson, Judy Collins, Sandy Denny, Fairport Convention, The Kingson Trio, Peter Paul & Mary, Linda Rondstadt, Johnny Cash, The Grateful Dead, Linda Thompson, Mary Chapin Carpenter and Francoise Hardy, and many others in Europe, Australia, England and Japan.
*  “Andersen is the most elegant of singers.” ~ ROLLING STONE
“ERIC ANDERSEN is a great ballad singer and writer.”  ~ Bob Dylan.
“A singer and writer of the first rank.” ~ New York Times.
“Didn’t that guy write ‘Thirsty Boots?’" ~ Overheard in a Detroit sports bar.* SCARLET RIVERA burned a hole in the fabric of rock history with her pioneering electrified violin sound. Based in classical roots,  she became the rebel bending capabilities of accepted norms by playing all styles of music. From the Jazz of Ornette Coleman to the robust innovation of a violin amid a 17 piece cuban band, Scarlet was a revolutionary at the start, an iconoclast of '70s rock sound.
*  Her discovery by Bob Dylan in 1975 set in motion the tapestry of a new sound and era, leading the way for strong female voices in instrumentation and paving the highway for the acceptance of strings in rock music.
*  Bob Dylan recognized her genius and unique vision and use of the violin much like a lead guitar. Their first collaboration was the legendary 1976 album ‘Desire’, and the rest is history.
TIX, $20 (THAT's not a mistake, either!); make reservations PROMPTLY, as in RIGHT NOW; 10 am-10 pm 7 days, at 626-798-6236.

♪ The ACOUSTIC AMERICANA MUSIC GUIDE endeavors to bring you NEWS – and views of interest to artists everywhere – more specifically to musicians and the creative community and music makers -- and fans of acoustic and Folk-Americana music. That includes both traditional and innovative forms. From the deepest roots to today’s acoustic renaissance, that’s our beat. We provide a wealth of resources, including a HUGE catalog of acoustic-friendly venues (now undergoing a major update), and inside info on FESTIVALS and select performances in Southern California in venues from the monumentally large to the intimately small and cozy. We cover workshops, conferences, and other events for artists and folks in the music industry, and all kinds o’ things in the world of acoustic and Americana and accessible classical music. From washtub bass to musical spoons to oboe to viola to banjo to squeezebox, from Djangostyle to new-fangled-old-time string band music, from sweet Cajun fiddle to bluegrass and pre-bluegrass Appalachian mountain music to all the swamp water roots of the blues and the bright lights of where the music is headed now.
