70+ Grammys -- of the total of 86 nomination categories -- will be awarded to some of the top names in folk, Americana, classical music, jazz, R&B, global music, and more, DURING THE AFTERNOON EVENT.
The sheer number of categories means all the awards cannot fit into the three-and-a-half-hour network broadcast, and as always, the commercialism prevails in prime time.
Thankfully, that means we get the "Premiere Ceremony," hosted by Grammy-winning actor and television host LeVar Burton -- where the MAJORITY of the Grammy Awards are bestowed.
The Guide is bringing you all the info you need about this year's show, and the various ways to watch it.

The Evening GRAMMYS broadcast, and more...
Postponed from January until tonight due to COVID restrictions then in place, the televised and streaming hoopla ensues live, and on the West Coast, delayed until after it's over in the time zone where it originates.
The Grammy Awards -- usually held in either Los Angeles or New York City -- this year are being held in Las Vegas, Nevada, at the MGM Grand Garden Arena. That arena has previously hosted six Latin Grammy Award shows, including 2021's Latin Grammys.
For 2022, the number of nominees is expanded from eight artists to ten for each of the "general field" categories, where all the pop-hop-rap-promoted-commercialism award noms are centered. Those are "Album of the Year," "Record of the Year," "Song of the Year," and "Best New Artist."
Of course roots music, folk-Americana, acoustic, real-authentic-trad country, and even rock fans usually have little interest in any of those categories. The awards of interest to our readers are often excluded from the broadcast.
But things are looking up for watching it.
We noted a couple months ago that live performances for tonight's show looked unusually appealing, and would NOT be the usual repetitious lineup of soundalike pop and electronica that varies only from squealing with robotic alterations to the human voice to doomsday electrocution mimicry with robotic alterations to the human voice. At least not exclusively that. Perhaps your multiyear comments to the Academy and/or the networks broadcasting the show have finally had an influence.
In any event, it's great to see the diverse lineup of talented performers doing the show.
Here's the full list of live musical performers:
Brothers Osborne, Brandi Carlile, Jon Batiste, John Legend, Lady Gaga, Billie Eilish, Chris Stapleton, Carrie Underwood, BTS, Olivia Rodrigo, Nas, Lil Nas X and Jack Harlow, H.E.R., and J Balvin with Maria Becerra.
In addition, Cynthia Erivo, Leslie Odom Jr., Ben Platt, and Rachel Zegler will perform in a special "In Memoriam" tribute to honor the late legendary composer Stephen Sondheim, which is one we look forward to seeing.
Something called Silk Sonic, apparently a "chart-topping funk duo" comprised of Bruno Mars and Anderson .Paak, will open the show.
It's wonderful to see an artist of immense talent, knowledge, and repertoire leading the field with the most nominations this year: musician Jon Batiste with 11 nods. If singer-songwriter Batiste wins all 11 nominations, he'll surpass both Michael Jackson and Santana who have tied as the artists to win the most Grammys in one year — eight.
Trevor Noah returns to host the evening show, following his emcee duties for the 2021 Grammy Awards. The South African comedian, and host of "The Daily Show" has appeal across a wide demographic.
Among those presenting awards in the main (broadcast) portion are Joni Mitchell, Keith Urban, Lenny Kravitz, Avril Lavigne, Billy Porter, Anthony Mackie, Dua Lipa, Jared Leto, and pop-rap icons Ludacris, Megan Thee Stallion, Michaela Jaé Rodriguez, and Questlove.
The GRAMMYS air live on CBS on cable and for the antenna-equipped. The live stream on CBS.com requires your cable provider login.
Cord-cutters can watch the main event live on Paramount+, and after the broadcast, it's available on-demand. Streaming subscription service options are Hulu+ with Live TV, YouTube TV, Sling TV, or fuboTV.

Life on Jupiter's Moons?
Apr 6, 10 am, online
April 6, brings a splendid space event from an unexpected source. French planetary scientists from NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory and from European Space Agency - ESA will share their experience and excitement for the upcoming revolutionary space science missions JUICE (ESA) and EuropaClipper (NASA) that will launch towards Jupiter's moons in 2023 and 2024.
This event is in English, via Zoom, though titled, "Café des Sciences: Exploration of Jupiter's moons." It is presented by Alliance Française de Pasadena, 833-386-3911; afdepasadena@gmail.com; www.afdepasadena.org
They'll talk about how the European-American collaboration promotes the search for habitable worlds, in the exploration of Jupiter's moons. As we have reported in The Guide, just ONE of Jupiter's several aquatic moons has more liquid water (beneath a shell of ice) than all the liquid water on the entire Earth!
Jovian moons Europa and Ganymede, and potentially the moon Callisto -- three natural satellites of Jupiter -- host global liquid saltwater oceans maintained by internal heating beneath their icy surfaces. Gravitational tug-of-wars between the giant planet and its other moons cause constant internal heating.
These moon's oceans have captured the interest and curiosity of the scientific community, and present us with an ultimate question for our species: do these moons harbor environments and conditions suitable for life?
Does it sing like whales? Does it swim like fish? Does it resemble the colonies of life found around the vents of Earth's deep oceans? We can't know until we go! What are we waiting for?
This event is organized by the Office for Science and Technology of the Embassy of France in the United States, which has a team at the Consulate of France in Los Angeles, and hosted at the Alliance Francaise de Pasadena.

"RICHARD LINKLATER’S APOLLO 10 1/2 IS A MOONAGE DAYDREAM"
Sort of a double-whammy... you've come to know we can be depended upon to get spaced-out. So, of course we are bringing you the link to the movie review by Asher Liberty from the March 31, 2022 LA Weekly.
Here's an excerpt:
"[Director] Linklater and cinematographer Tommy Pallotta shot the film in rotoscope (in which animators trace over motion picture footage) with 2-D lenses bringing a lyrical quality to the Madam George-style vignettes. Stan’s favorite bands, from Pink Floyd to Buffalo Springfield, are presented over these images to add a layer of depth to each frame. Stan uses music to process the world around him: a montage of space exploration is set to The Age of Aquarius by Fifth Dimension. The rest of the soundtrack features hits from The Monkees, while dad hums a memorable rendition of Wichita Lineman.
"Every piece of Apollo 10 1/2 –from the songs, to the places, to the cars and toys– are strands of Linklater’s memory laid out for the viewer not just to inspect but to experience. It’s the atmosphere that endures: the fireworks on the 4th of July, the games on the back porch, the adventures on the front lawn. It’s a stroll down memory lane you won’t soon forget."

"Broadway to Freeway: Life and Times of a Vibrant Community at Santa Monica History Museum"
Runs April 1 – December 23, 2022
"In the mid-20th century, the Broadway neighborhood was a thriving, tight-knit community in Santa Monica. Built by African American, Mexican American, and immigrant communities, the Broadway neighborhood was a haven for those who were excluded from other parts of the city. From beauty parlors and jazz clubs, to the malt shop, tortilleria, and Jewish deli, this exhibition tells the story of how residents built Broadway into a flourishing community of color — and how the 10 freeway destroyed it in the 1960s. Featuring period photographs, advertisements, oral histories, and songs, the exhibition draws on the wealth of archival material collected by the Quinn Research Center, which is dedicated to preserving the history of African American life in Santa Monica. 1350 7th St., Santa Monica." ~ LA Weekly

SUZANA BARTAL AND THE CALDER QUARTET
Pianist Suzana Bartal returns to The Wallis with the Calder Quartet for a beautiful program of string quartets and piano quintets. The evening begins with a pair of string quartets: one composed in 1782 by the father of the string quartet, Joseph Haydn, and the other created more than 200 years later by Jamaican composer Eleanor Alberga. Also on the program are piano quintets by Robert Schumann and Eric Tanguy. Schumann's only Piano Quintet, in four movements, composed in an enthusiastic outpour of only five days in 1842, remains a major work of nineteenth-century chamber music, a work that revolutionized the instrumentation for piano and strings and established the piano quintet as a quintessentially Romantic genre. In 2019, almost 180 years later, renowned French composer Eric Tanguy responds to the models of the past with the US Premiere of a stunningly enticing piece in one movement in which the piano and the strings put a virtuosic dialogue on display.

JOHNNY GANDELSMAN: "THIS IS AMERICA"
In response to this turbulent period in history, Grammy Award-winning violinist and producer Johnny Gandelsman developed "This Is America," a new commissioning and recording project for solo violin, written by American and US-based artists.
Commissioned by 20 presenters in 11 states and Washington DC, "This is America" celebrates our country’s rich cultural tapestry and its myriad perspectives, thoughts and ideas, offering a vivid counterpoint to the idea that this land can be understood through a singular, dominant point of view. Each composition in the anthology reflects on the current state of American society in a personal and intimate way, looking through an unflinching lens at universal topics like separation, loneliness, hope and love. HARLEM QUARTET
Harlem Quartet’s performance with Cuban pianist/composer Aldo López-Gavilán offers a joyously energetic concert experience. The collaboration reunites López-Gavilán with his older brother, violinist Ilmar Gavilán, who left Cuba at age 14 and went on to co-found Harlem Quartet. López-Gavilán and the quartet showcase scintillating chemistry in a broad variety of repertoire. The evening includes American jazz standards, bossa nova classics, and, of course, several original compositions from López-Gavilán that take audiences on a journey through Cuba’s myriad musical traditions.

INNA FALIKS, PIANO
The acclaimed Ukrainian-born American pianist breaks new ground with an homage to Beethoven and Ravel that manages to do the impossible: be breathtakingly innovative while remaining respectful to the source material. This program presents the live premieres of nine imaginative and rich new works for the piano, alongside masterpieces by Beethoven and Ravel. It also celebrates Faliks’ new, internationally acclaimed CD release of the program on Navona Records which was recorded/produced during the global pandemic, with the help of Yamaha’s Disklavier technology.
Nine contemporary composers, including Paola Prestini, Billy Childs, Timo Andres, as well as six UCLA faculty composers -- Richard Danielpour, Peter Golub, Ian Krouse, David Lefkowitz, Mark Carlson and Tamir Hendelman -- were commissioned to craft responses to Ludwig van Beethoven’s Bagatelles, op. 126 (incidentally, the master’s favorite) as well as Maurice Ravel’s Gaspard de la Nuit. The results are exhilarating, not least owing to Faliks’s stunningly precise and sensitive pianistic interpretation: she ties together classical, romantic and modern pieces with disarming nonchalance and rock-solid technical skill. Defying the challenge of uniting three centuries of musical styles and social commentary, "Reimagine Beethoven and Ravel" proudly raises a monument not only to the genius of Beethoven and Ravel, but also to the perseverance and verve of some of today’s most exciting and important composers.
Running Time: Approximately 2 hours including 15-minute intermission.

So remember to MERGE ONTO THIS LIL' CYBER VECTOR THROUGH SPACE/TIME.
