CORKY SIEGEL is known internationally as one of the world’s great blues harmonica players, and is a celebrated composer, blues pianist, singer, songwriter, band leader and author.

Along with the likes of John Cage, Steve Reich, Phillip Glass, and Meredith Monk, he is the recipient of a Meet the Composer/Reader’s Digest Commissioning Program for New American Music grant for chamber music composition resulting in his Chamber Blues ensemble’s popular Aunt Lila’s Suite; he has also been honored with the Illinois Arts Council Fellowship Award for Music Composition, the Chicago Music Awards’ Lifetime Achievement Award, and induction into the Chicago Blues Hall of Fame.

These Holocaust survivors are now aged, many in their 80s and 90s, and after surviving unspeakable Nazi atrocities -- some, miraculously surviving until liberation at the end of World War II -- many of those still on this Earth are in dire straits financially, and with health needs that go back to what happened to their bodies to seven decades ago, when they were starved, tortured, and had chemical experiments conducted on them. THE ALTERNATE ROOT CELEBRATES WORKERS AROUND THE WORLD
The first steps for a day to celebrate the Labor movement dates back to 1882. New York City was ground zero for the need to honor the women and men with filled the jobs that keep the lights on, the hweel oiled and the food on our tables. A day was dedicated to the social and economic achievements of workers, initially celebrated with parades. A yearly date was put in place by President Grover Cleveland to thank the men and women whose contributions aided the strength, prosperity, and well-being of their country.

LABOR DAY WEEKEND'S MUSIC & EVENTS 2016

Yes, LABOR DAY is too easily taken for granted, when American workers actually fought against slavery and de facto slavery and conditions of servitude for at least a hundred and fifty years before winning all the things we took for granted, until we began to lose them again: five-day, 40-hour work weeks, eight-hour days, paid vacations, jobs with benefit packages, retirement benefits, and all the things we continue to lose to the oligarchs, Wall Street banksters, and this ongoing 21st century return of the Robber Barons.
There is one Labor Day music event that's really about Labor Day and the history and culture of the American labor movement. It's a special performance by Music Legend Award honoree ROSS ALTMAN, and it's Sunday morning, September 4, at 10:15 am in Santa Monica. It's in our weekend "things to do" section.
Whatever you choose to do, be happy, be safe, be tuneful, be mindful of all you do and can do for others, and TRY to forget about that damned election for a little while!

IN THE SKIES
Hourly flyovers are planned along the L.A. Waterfront; highlights include historic WWII aircraft, to fighter jets. Just announced August 26, LA Fleet Week™ organizers released the line-up for the event’s planned aircraft flyovers this upcoming Labor Day Weekend, September 2-5. The schedule features a wide range of military aircraft that will be “spreading their wings” for the thousands of visitors expected for the multi-day event over the holiday weekend.
Aerial demonstrations kick off with a U.S. Coast Guard Search and Rescue Demonstration on Friday, at 1 pm, with hourly flyovers by Dunbar Airshows, sponsored by Clyde & Co., starting at 10 am over the Los Angeles Main Channel, each day, Saturday through Monday. The featured aircraft and daily aerial demo schedule are at:

On Saturday and Sunday at 1 pm and Monday at noon, a plane towing a giant American flag will make its way along the L.A. Waterfront in a show of support and patriotism for the military personnel visiting as part of LA Fleet Week™.
Notable among the numerous performing aircraft are:
• US NAVY F/A-18E SUPER HORNET. A formation of these aircraft-carrier-capable planes will fly over on Sat & Mon at 3 pm, and an individual aircraft will do a demonstration on Sun at 2 pm. This aircraft serves as the Navy’s frontline attack fighter. The LA Fleet Week™ flyover will feature a three-aircraft Super Hornet formation. Pilots and aircraft will be from Strike Fighter Squadron (VFA) 113 “Stingers” based in Lemoore, CA.
• VULTEE BT-13 VALIANT is a rare WWII aircraft-carrier-based dive bomber. It will fly over at 4 pm Sat & Sun and at 1 pm on Mon. Nicknamed the “Vultee Vibrator” by pilot trainees, this mono-wing airplane was flown by the U.S. Navy as the “SNV” during WWII. The plane was important in the battle of the Coral Sea that turned-back a Japanese invasion of Australia. In the pivotal Battle of Midway, the turning point of WWII in the Pacific, the pilots of squadrons of these outclassed aircraft and its successor, the Douglas SBD, largely sacrificed themselves against the far larger Japanese fleet that was nonetheless defeated by US naval air power.
• COAST GUARD HELICOPTERS will perform a search and rescue demonstration Fri, Sat, & Sun, at 1 pm.
• USCG MH-60T Jayhawk is a multi-mission, twin-engine, medium-range helicopter operated by the U.S. Coast Guard for search and rescue, law enforcement, military readiness and marine environmental protection missions. The MH-60T is a member of the Sikorsky S-70 family of helicopters and is based on the U.S. Navy SH-60 Seahawk helicopter.

• USCG MH-65 Dolphin. The U.S. Coast Guard's primary rescue helicopter, the Dolphin is certified for operation in all-weather and night-time operations, with the exception of icing conditions. The H-65 is the primary Coast Guard aircraft used aboard certified cutters during deployments.
“Aircraft flyovers are always a crowd favorite,” said Rear Admiral Mike Shatynski, USN (ret.), an LA Fleet Week™ Foundation Board Member. He continued, “Against the backdrop of the Vincent Thomas Bridge and down the main channel of 'America’s Port,' the aircraft and Coast Guard demonstrations will be a great enhancement to LA’s inaugural Fleet Week.”

Since they moved to Colorado, we don't see all that much of Stephanie Bettman and Luke Halpin. They came out to the left coast to attend and perform at the Western Arts Alliance, Aug 29-Sep 1st and play some additional gigs while they're here. Mostly, they're busy playing festivals and gigs all over the country.
Stephanie checked-in to tell us, "From one coast to the next! It's a busy month. Luke and I sang our hearts out for all of ten minutes at the Falcon Ridge Folk Fest in New York. This was just last week. We were honored to be chosen among this year's 'Emerging Artists.' We wait to hear the results of the audience ballots for 'Most Wanted To Return.' Our fingers are crossed."

Sunday, September 25, from 1-5 pm, you can take part in something meaningful and help some very special people you probably never knew were in immediate great need. Many survivors of the Holocaust live in Eastern Europe, where the general economic situation is often poor for everyone of all ages. These Holocaust survivors are now aged, many in their 80s and 90s, and after surviving unspeakable Nazi atrocities -- some, miraculously surviving until liberation at the end of World War II -- many of those still on this Earth are in dire straits financially, and with health needs that go back to what happened to their bodies to seven decades ago, when they were starved, tortured, and had chemical experiments conducted on them.

Yes, LABOR DAY is too easily taken for granted, when American workers actually fought against slavery and de facto slavery and conditions of servitude for at least a hundred and fifty years before winning all the things we took for granted, until we began to lose them again: five-day, 40-hour work weeks, eight-hour days, paid vacations, jobs with benefit packages, retirement benefits, and all the things we continue to lose to the oligarchs, Wall Street banksters, and this ongoing 21st century return of the Robber Barons.
There is one Labor Day music event that's really about Labor Day and the history and culture of the American labor movement. It's a special performance by Music Legend Award honoree ROSS ALTMAN, and it's Sunday morning, September 4, at 10:15 am in Santa Monica. It's in our weekend "things to do" section.
Whatever you choose to do, be happy, be safe, be tuneful, be mindful of all you do and can do for others, and TRY to forget about that damned election for a little while!

IN THE SKIES
Hourly flyovers are planned along the L.A. Waterfront; highlights include historic WWII aircraft, to fighter jets. Just announced August 26, LA Fleet Week™ organizers released the line-up for the event’s planned aircraft flyovers this upcoming Labor Day Weekend, September 2-5. The schedule features a wide range of military aircraft that will be “spreading their wings” for the thousands of visitors expected for the multi-day event over the holiday weekend.
Aerial demonstrations kick off with a U.S. Coast Guard Search and Rescue Demonstration on Friday, at 1 pm, with hourly flyovers by Dunbar Airshows, sponsored by Clyde & Co., starting at 10 am over the Los Angeles Main Channel, each day, Saturday through Monday. The featured aircraft and daily aerial demo schedule are at:

On Saturday and Sunday at 1 pm and Monday at noon, a plane towing a giant American flag will make its way along the L.A. Waterfront in a show of support and patriotism for the military personnel visiting as part of LA Fleet Week™.
Notable among the numerous performing aircraft are:
• US NAVY F/A-18E SUPER HORNET. A formation of these aircraft-carrier-capable planes will fly over on Sat & Mon at 3 pm, and an individual aircraft will do a demonstration on Sun at 2 pm. This aircraft serves as the Navy’s frontline attack fighter. The LA Fleet Week™ flyover will feature a three-aircraft Super Hornet formation. Pilots and aircraft will be from Strike Fighter Squadron (VFA) 113 “Stingers” based in Lemoore, CA.
• VULTEE BT-13 VALIANT is a rare WWII aircraft-carrier-based dive bomber. It will fly over at 4 pm Sat & Sun and at 1 pm on Mon. Nicknamed the “Vultee Vibrator” by pilot trainees, this mono-wing airplane was flown by the U.S. Navy as the “SNV” during WWII. The plane was important in the battle of the Coral Sea that turned-back a Japanese invasion of Australia. In the pivotal Battle of Midway, the turning point of WWII in the Pacific, the pilots of squadrons of these outclassed aircraft and its successor, the Douglas SBD, largely sacrificed themselves against the far larger Japanese fleet that was nonetheless defeated by US naval air power.
• COAST GUARD HELICOPTERS will perform a search and rescue demonstration Fri, Sat, & Sun, at 1 pm.
• USCG MH-60T Jayhawk is a multi-mission, twin-engine, medium-range helicopter operated by the U.S. Coast Guard for search and rescue, law enforcement, military readiness and marine environmental protection missions. The MH-60T is a member of the Sikorsky S-70 family of helicopters and is based on the U.S. Navy SH-60 Seahawk helicopter.

• USCG MH-65 Dolphin. The U.S. Coast Guard's primary rescue helicopter, the Dolphin is certified for operation in all-weather and night-time operations, with the exception of icing conditions. The H-65 is the primary Coast Guard aircraft used aboard certified cutters during deployments.
“Aircraft flyovers are always a crowd favorite,” said Rear Admiral Mike Shatynski, USN (ret.), an LA Fleet Week™ Foundation Board Member. He continued, “Against the backdrop of the Vincent Thomas Bridge and down the main channel of 'America’s Port,' the aircraft and Coast Guard demonstrations will be a great enhancement to LA’s inaugural Fleet Week.”

ON THE WATER
Military vessels featured at the event will include the CGC (Coast Guard Cutter) "ACTIVE," a Reliance-class cutter; the USS "AMERICA" amphibious assault ship; USS "CHAMPION," an Avenger-class mine countermeasures ship; and the USS "WAYNE E MEYER" guided missile destroyer.

There's an action-packed calendar of events, with something for everyone.
• Thursday, September 1, 6-9 pm. San Pedro's monthly "First Thursday Art Walk" expands to the "LA Fleet Week™ Welcome Celebration." The San Pedro Historic Business District welcomes everyone to downtown San Pedro for the music, visual, and performing arts of Art Walk and a Welcome Party. Enjoy an evening of food, culture, entertainment, community and military camaraderie.

BETTMAN & HALPIN PERFORM THIS WEEKEND & COMING WEEK IN CALIFORNIA
Since they moved to Colorado, we don't see all that much of Stephanie Bettman and Luke Halpin. They came out to the left coast to attend and perform at the Western Arts Alliance, Aug 29-Sep 1st and play some additional gigs while they're here. Mostly, they're busy playing festivals and gigs all over the country.
Stephanie checked-in to tell us, "From one coast to the next! It's a busy month. Luke and I sang our hearts out for all of ten minutes at the Falcon Ridge Folk Fest in New York. This was just last week. We were honored to be chosen among this year's 'Emerging Artists.' We wait to hear the results of the audience ballots for 'Most Wanted To Return.' Our fingers are crossed."
Stephanie wasted no time saying, "We are super excited to be bringing out the full band for four - count 'em - FOUR shows in three days in SoCal."

"A STAR SHINES FOR SURVIVORS:" WORTHY & STAR-STUDDED, SEPTEMBER 25
Sunday, September 25, from 1-5 pm, you can take part in something meaningful and help some very special people you probably never knew were in immediate great need. Many survivors of the Holocaust live in Eastern Europe, where the general economic situation is often poor for everyone of all ages. These Holocaust survivors are now aged, many in their 80s and 90s, and after surviving unspeakable Nazi atrocities -- some, miraculously surviving until liberation at the end of World War II -- many of those still on this Earth are in dire straits financially, and with health needs that go back to what happened to their bodies to seven decades ago, when they were starved, tortured, and had chemical experiments conducted on them.
The event's host committee includes MAYIM BIALIK, VALERIE HARPER, FRANCES FISHER, ELLIOTT GOULD, “MILLION DOLLAR LISTING’S” JOSH FLAGG, and more

The organizing force is "The Survivor Mitzvah Project," an urgent humanitarian effort aiding Holocaust survivors in desperate need, and the project is hosting this special event in Beverly Hills on September 25.
"A Star Shines for Survivors" is an afternoon of luxury jewelry, compassionate celebrities, sweets and libations. Importantly, it launches the “Survivor Bracelet,” an exclusive, limited edition unisex bracelet created by luxury jewelry designer Dominique Cohen. “Designing this special piece was a labor of love,” says Cohen. “We are thrilled that the funds raised will help sustain and save the lives of Holocaust survivors in Eastern Europe.”

Of course everyone remembers that musical duo with the amazing songwriting on the parts of both its members, and the stunningly great harmonies. Well, since the breakup of roots-acoustic duo FUR & STEVE, we just don't hear, or hear from, either one of 'em nearly often enough.
But Fur recently checked-in. She tells us, "I am recording a new rock & roll album with my new band, WTFUKUSHIMA!! (Pronounced: What the Fukushima!!)"
"The new WTFUKUSHIMA!! album is now available for pre-order. I am asking for your help to fund its completion. Every pre-order or premium purchase will get us closer to our goal of raising $10,000.00."
