Singer-songwriter LEE KOCH has taken some unexpected turns in the past couple of years. From bandleader to baker he halted his pursuit of a music career to explore a different avenue. Baking bread only lasted a few months before Lee got an opportunity to be on national television as a contestant on NBC’s The Voice. It was a short stint, but provided enough exposure to get him back into music and on the road. Now with his second album in the works and his first child on the way Lee plans to tour the country with his family in hopes of continuing on in music for years to come. THE BIRDHIVE BOYS is a 5 piece traditional bluegrass outfit based in Brooklyn, NY. The boys approach a traditional country and bluegrass repertory with instrumental prowess and a unique rhythmic sensibility. The band has recently shared the stage with bluegrass supergroups Michael Cleveland and Dailey & Vincent and has just finished a new EP set for release this November.

With the "classic" bluegrass look and sound, The Birdhive Boys have been compared to Bill Monroe's Bluegrass Boys and neo-traditionalists the Johnson Mountain Boys. Holding down a two-year long residency at the National Underground in Manhattan's Lower East Side, The Boys have shared the stage with many fine acts, including national touring act The Holy Ghost Tent Revival, Grammy winners Dailey and Vincent, and New York City bluegrass heavyweight Michael Daves (Chris Thile, Steve Martin). They recently finished a 4-song EP called "The Corn Lady", available for free download through their website, and hard copies for sale (with complementary autographs) directly from the Boys at their shows.

The Birdhive Boys started in 2008 with brothers Zack and Sam Bruce rediscovering the songs of their youth. Mom and Dad were casual bluegrass pickers and singers, and the songs of The Stanley Brothers, Del McCoury, Doc Watson, and Tony Rice comprised much of Zack and Sam's childhood soundtrack. The Bruce brothers started playing the brother harmony repertoire in Zack's downtown loft, and after about a year they decided to put together a full band for shows. They were able to recruit fellow New Jerseyan bassist-of-all-trades Max Johnson, St. Louis flatpicker Justin Camerer, and Ellery Marshall on the banjo. SHAWN JONES is the epitome of American Roots/Rock music. He has proven over time that he has an international appeal. He is true to form of his influences, spanning from all the greats in Rock, Rhythm & Blues, Jazz & Country. With three studio albums and one live album under his belt, Shawn’s skills as a seasoned songwriter, guitarist, and vocalist have put him on the same bill with the likes of BB King, Buddy Guy, Bonnie Raitt, Jimmie Vaughan, Willie Nelson, Leon Russell, Robben Ford, Derek Trucks, Little Feat, and others. Waylon Jennings was also so impressed with his live performance that he took Jones under his wing, offering him the grand opportunity to play on his 1996 release "Right For The Time." Founded in 2006, SLUGGER O'TOOLE has emerged as one of Southern California’s hottest Celtic bands. The mighty men of Slugger O’Toole share a passion for the drinking, fighting & work songs of Ireland, and concoct a lethal brew of foot-stomping classics, heart-rending ballads, deft instrumentals, a-cappella killers and driving original songs that are true to the Celtic tradition while re-imagining the possibilities of the genre.

Unlike many Celtic rock bands working the circuit these days, Slugger O’Toole does not play “punk” or “hard-rock” versions of tunes from the Irish songbook. JUDY COLLINS opens the show! It airs and streams twice on Christmas Day. It's a three-hour show taped live, and it airs on KCET television and on www.kcet.org worldwide. It's from the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion at the L.A. Music Center (www.musiccenter.org). The event has a long history, and again this year, it delivered a superbly produced kaleidoscope of Southern California-based music and dance talent, both professional and dedicated, well-rehearsed amateurs.

The Guide attended rehearsals with many of the acts and knew the exciting LAS CAFETERAS would be a treat. Watch for the delightfully esoteric instruments played by LAS CAFETERAS: the marimbol – a large xylophone-like box; tarima – a wooden stomp box; quijada – a donkey jawbone; jarona – an 8-string guitar like instrument in 3 sizes, the primera (smallest), segunda (medium), tercera (largest), and the requinto – a 4-string melody guitar.

There’s plenty to enjoy! VAUD & THE VILLIANS is another great act! And for the first time in years, there is NO rap or hip-hop(!) Marvelous dance, big band, choirs and exciting vocal groups, and for once it’s not a cliché to say, much more than you nexpect!

THE BIRDHIVE BOYS is a 5 piece traditional bluegrass outfit based in Brooklyn, NY. The boys approach a traditional country and bluegrass repertory with instrumental prowess and a unique rhythmic sensibility. The Birdhive Boys started in 2008 with brothers Zack and Sam Bruce rediscovering the songs of their youth. Mom and Dad were casual bluegrass pickers and singers, and the songs of The Stanley Brothers, Del McCoury, Doc Watson, and Tony Rice comprised much of Zack and Sam's childhood soundtrack. The Bruce brothers started playing the brother harmony repertoire in Zack's downtown loft, and after about a year they decided to put together a full band for shows. They were able to recruit fellow New Jerseyan bassist-of-all-trades Max Johnson, St. Louis flatpicker Justin Camerer, and Ellery Marshall on the banjo.
