√ BRITISH BLUES LEGEND JOHN MAYALL HAS NEW CD, PLAYS GRAMMY MUSEUM TONIGHT

“AN EVENING WITH JOHN MAYALL” is a post-CD-release live performance-interview event tonight at 8 pm in the Grammy Museum’s Clive Davis Theatre, 800 W Olympic Bl, L.A. 90015; 213-765-6803; www.grammymuseum.org.

Recently signed by Forty Below Records, the legendary "Godfather of British Blues," John Mayall, just released his first studio album in five years. “A Special Life” hit the streets and cyber-order parlors on May 13. John Mayall's place in music history has been assured ever since he put together the first of his bands, the BLUESBREAKERS, in 1963. Besides his own work, John also backed blues greats JOHN LEE HOOKER, T-BONE WALKER and SONNY BOY WILLIAMSON on their first English club tours. When ERIC CLAPTON quit the YARDBIRDS, John quickly offered him the job as his new guitarist, whereupon John and the band recorded an all-time best-selling classic album.

Now, “A Special Life” serves as further testament to John Mayall's boundless talent, vitality, and ever-dynamic personality. Recorded at Entourage Studios in North Hollywood, Mayall produced the album himself as well as creating the original cover art and design, with co-production, engineering, and mixing by Eric Corne. Backing Mayall on the new album are his five-year veteran band members – Texas guitarist ROCKY ATHAS and a Chicago-based rhythm section of GREG RZAB on bass guitar and JAY DAVENPORT on drums.

“A Special Life” includes three new songs penned by John and a reworked Mayall classic to go with his covers of JIMMY ROGERS ("That's All Right"), ALBERT KING ("Floodin' in California"), SONNY LANDRETH ("Speak of the Devil"), JIMMY McCRACKLIN ("I Just Got to Know") and EDDIE TAYLOR ("Big Town Playboy"), plus a new song written by Greg and Rocky. Accordion legend C.J. CHENIER makes a powerhouse guest appearance on a couple of tracks, including the opener, "Why Did You Go Last Night," written and previously recorded by his father, Zydeco icon CLIFTON CHENIER.

John Mayall and his band embarked on a major two-month tour of Europe and have now returned to the U.S. to begin touring around the country with the album's release, headlining major concert venues as well as performing at festivals throughout the spring and summer. It’s an in-depth discussion moderated by GRAMMY Museum Executive Director Bob Santelli, and a special, stripped-down performance.

All proceeds benefit The GRAMMY Museum. Tix, $20, at the Museum Box Office at 213-765-6803 or online at www.grammymuseum.org

√ “ARTPRIZE” ARTIST REGISTRATION CLOSES TONIGHT

ARTPRIZE 2014 runs Sep 24 -Oct 12, and it’s a long ways away – in Grand Rapids, Michigan. But it has attracted West Coast artists and it is quite unlike anything else. The event literally takes over the entire city, with music performances, impromptu sculpture gardens, multimedia exhibitions on scales grand and small, paintings, drawings, etchings, landscapings, and surprising varieties and types of “more.” It’s all free, and the prizes in ArtPrize are appreciable cash awards.

Venues are of every conceivable kind, from sports arenas and vacant lots to clubs with stages to the lobby and lawn of the Gerald R. Ford Presidential Museum. Artist Registration runs April 21-June 5, and “Artist + Venue Connections” run April 28-June 19.

TIANANMEN SQUARE UPRISING STILL SPEAKS TO US

by Larry Wines

Twenty-five years ago today, one man showed us what bravery looks like.

I remember how ready I was to join a new "Lincoln Brigade" and emulate the Americans of the 1930s who went to fight the fascists in the Spanish Civil War. It seemed – for one, brief, shining moment – to be China's turn to taste freedom and freely-elect its leaders. Or so we thought.

It was 1989. The Berlin Wall was about to fall. The Iron Curtain that divided Europe was unraveling. The Soviet Union would soon fragment into states ruled by their own inhabitants.

It seemed to be “the new birth of freedom” that Lincoln had anticipated, with governments everywhere that would be of the people, by the people, for the people. But in China, the ruling class had dug-in and fought to retain control.

I have never forgotten how inspired I was by that lone, brave young man who kept moving sideways, back and forth, to remain centered in front of the leading tank, as an entire column of tanks was coming to end free expression. In the midst of the outrage of an unstoppable force of repression stood an immovable object. The actions of that one, lone human unmistakably communicated, “Stop here, or you will have to run me down.” Single-handed, he prevented that column of armor from attacking the student protestors in Tiananmen Square, until he was taken away, never to be heard from again.

Still, in some of the most iconic photos of the twentieth century, those taken by Jeff Widener of the Associated Press, he became "Tank Man." That unknown figure remains a symbol of the solitary man against the enormous machine, of the lone voice opposing injustice in the face of insurmountable odds, of the ability of one individual to take a stand for the rights of the common man against the power elite of a brutal, totalitarian regime.

It all came flooding back when I saw a brief message from musician Christopher Lockett.

Christopher commented, "...most people have not seen the original version of the photo... The uncropped version shows us the true scope of what this man was facing down -- and when you see it, you know just how mighty a statement he made."

Thus, we include that long shot among the images taken by Jeff Widener.

It still speaks to us, but how much more does it say?

It's twenty-five years later. American jobs have been lost by the millions, chiefly to the poorly-paid corporate residential factory work forces of China. There, workers are often kept behind guarded wire, sometimes with anti-suicide nets to catch them when they jump.

And those American jobs that went overseas have likewise been lost to another cause entirely: the greed of multinational (usually Western, sometimes American-flag-flying) corporations. The same corporations who pay tens of millions in bloated compensation packages and bonuses to their execs as rewards for increasing profits, even as those “expenses” are tax-deductions from their US earnings, based on sales of cheaply-made, often environmentally-damaging, Chinese products.

Meanwhile, China has become addicted to the same kind of acquisitive consumerism, and forgotten those who bravely spoke truth to power. There, it's even sadder that the essence of what those brave souls had to say twenty-five years ago, demanding self-determination and standing in front of the tanks, is not considered to be truth in the land of their birth.

Christopher Lockett had more to say, as the memories of 1989 returned. He wrote, "I was in summer school at Clemson. Jerry from Mauldin, SC, a none-too-bright kid down the hall, ran into the room and said: 'Oh man, the Chinese are sending in tanks!' My roommate and I ran down the hall to someone's room with a TV. Jerry got all excited and said: 'Yeah man, f--- those protestors, send in those tanks!' We all stared / glared at him and wondered three things at once:
1. Just how stupid this kid was.
2. How much law and order propaganda he must have been raised with to hold such a view.
3. How the Chinese dissidents protesting for freedom stood a chance if there were more than a few Jerrys in the west."

Indeed, there seem to be more than a few Jerrys on today’s political ;andscape.

A more hopeful experience came from Shannon Wells, remembering Tiananmen, who said, "A few years after that I worked with three physicists from PRC, who were here when that happened. They almost couldn't believe their eyes. They were furious that their own government would do this to its own people, and they truly believed that if the people of China knew about it, they would stand up to the government."

Twenty-five years on. And how culpable are we in China’s continued repression, as we buy so many imported goods that enrich China's power elite, and even borrow and indebt ourselves to them?

At least we, in the world outside China, have Jeff Widener’s "Tank Man" photographs. (You can read "A Conversation with Jeff Widener, who photographed 'Tank Man'," at:
http://petapixel.com/2013/06/21/a-conversation-with-jeff-widener )

In China, Jeff's photos – along with all other images and all mentions and references to the Tiananmen Square Uprising and the other, concurrent demonstrations throughout China – are aggressively and brutally suppressed. In China, those who attempt to publish, post, or even discuss what happened in 1989 are persecuted, prosecuted, and jailed. It's an open question whether they are still subjected to torture.

1989, and its echo today is muted, perhaps even distorted. 1989, the world before Gitmo, before our own shameful suppressions, repressions, jailings without trials, acts of torture, and official justifications for those acts. Oh yes, we were attacked from outside. But China's rulers say they were attacked, too -- from within.

When driven by fear, any society can co-opt its people to aid in censorship and repression, even persecution of their own neighbors. All it takes to make your citizenry into zealots is convincing them – however nebulously and obtusely – that their way of life, or public decency, or anything held dear that’s more emotional that intellectual, is at risk to a marauding enemy.

All of us have a long way to go before we are endowed as members of the human family with life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness as inalienable rights. And today is a good time to think about that.

+
Legendary singer-songwriter, Rodriguez, makes his Greek Theatre, LA debut on Friday, May 30. Well-known in the U.S. for his 2012 Oscar award-winning documentary, “Searching for Sugar Man,” Rodríguez's fame and music have now reached audiences worldwide.
+
Rodriguez, a self-taught guitarist, began performing in bars and clubs around the city of Detroit in the 1960s, as the city suffered post-industrial urban decay. It was there that he recorded two studio albums, Cold Factin 1969 and Coming from Reality in 1971. These compositions went unnoticed in the U.S. and Rodriguez eventually turned his efforts elsewhere, earning a bachelor's degree in philosophy from Wayne State University, running for political office and working construction and factory jobs to support his family.
+
In the mid-1970s, his music gained airplay in Australia and New Zealand and he toured the area finding limited success as an overseas performer.
+
Rodriguez was unaware that he had reached legendary folk-rock super stardom status in South Africa, where mistaken rumors circulated that he had perished. As it turns out, South African anti-Apartheid activists and musicians alike were inspired by his counterculture lyrics.
+
In the late 1990s, South African fans finally sought him out, leading to the unanticipated renaissance of his music career. Rodriguez now tours extensively in South Africa, Australia, Europe, and the U.S., where he takes thoughtful appreciation in greeting longtime fans, and a new generation of listeners who find common ground in his music. His albums, Cold Fact and Coming from Reality have since been re-released on Light in the Attic records and the Searching for Sugar Man soundtrack is available on Sony Legacy. International media attention and accolades have since been bestowed upon both the film and the music.

Paul Zollo writes, “Happy Earl Grey Day! We celebrate this day, the birthday of Earl Grey, one of the best humans I have ever been lucky enough to know. On this day we celebrate musicians and artists and authors and poets and all those people who enrich our world with their loving brilliance - few people I have ever known recognize their value more than Urlie, who has not only read a few of the great books - he's read every one of them!! And few people in my life have ever treated me - the songwriter me - with more love or appreciation. So on this day, in his honor, have a drink or a smoke or whatever makes you happy, and put on great music, or read a great book, and delight in the fact that humans can do this stuff. And tell those you love how much you love them, without apology. Love you forever Urlie Gee.”

+
Bob continues, “Two world class performers. One diverse evening of instrumental music. One historical musical inventor.” Quite a night.
+
Chapman Stick player Tom Griesgraber and guitarist Bert Lams celebrate the release of their new concept album: Unnamed Lands. The culmination of over four years of collaboration and one of the most inspired projects either musician has ever been a part of, this all-original work tells the story of a group of wagon train pioneers heading west circa 1840. A strong progressive rock influence and adventurous sounds blend seamlessly with a highly melodic, folk-like approach into what could almost be called "Progressive Americana." The duo is honored to be joined by Chapman Stick inventor Emmett Chapman, who will perform an opening set. In addition to creating the Stick instruments, beginning in 1969, Emmett has taken his musical invention and his unique approach to improvisation to venues throughout the world.

Tom Griesgraber is one of the world’s most active players of the Chapman Stick, a unique 12-string guitar/bass hybrid. An honors graduate of Berklee College of Music, he has performed across the US and Europe as a soloist and with his groups Marotta/Griesgraber and Agent 22.
+
Bert Lams is a founding member of the California Guitar Trio, and known for his affinity with the music of J.S.Bach. His recent arrangements of Bach's cello suites and violin partitas for solo guitar were released on his solo CD 'Nascent'. Bert tunes his guitar in fifths; a tuning more closely resembling a cello than a traditional guitar.
+
California Guitar Trio member Bert Lams and Chapman Stick player Tom Griesgraber play a new set of original music featured on their new CD 'Unnamed Lands'.
+
Bert Lams initially gained notice in 1980 as first laureate for National Music Contest for Youth in Brussels, and went on to earn an honors degree in the study of classical guitar, at the Royal Conservatory of Music in Brussels, Belgium. After attending Guitar Craft seminars with Robert Fripp, Bert Lams co-founded the CGT with Paul Richards (U.S.) and Hideyo Moriya (Japan).
+
Since 1993, CGT has released eleven albums and toured extensively across the world, performing their eclectic repertoire. CGT music was featured in the television coverage of the Olympics, and on CBS, NBC, CNN World Beat, and ESPN TV programs. Their music was sent into outer space to wake the crew aboard NASA's Space Shuttle Endeavor.
+
Bert's solo album 'Nascent' features new arrangements of Bach's cello suites and violin partitas for guitar and brings a unique twist to the classical guitar world. Not only are the pieces performed on steel string guitar with a pick, but they are also set in what's known as "New Standard Tuning"; a tuning more closely resembling a cello than a traditional guitar.
+
A honors graduate of Berklee College of Music in Boston, Tom Griesgraber is one of the world's most active performers on the Chapman Stick; a unique 12-string guitar and bass hybrid played more like piano with both hands sounding notes. He is an active composer and arranger for the instrument and his shows generally include a mix of original material as well as arrangements ranging from Bach to the Beatles.
+
Tom performs regularly across the US and Europe as a soloist or with his group Agent 22. √ “THE DROP: JOHN FULLBRIGHT” is a CD release event presented in conjunction with the Americana Music Association & 88.5FM KCSN. It happens Mon, Jun 30, at 8 pm at the Grammy Museum in L.A. General on-sale begins Thursday, May 29, 2014 at noon. (American Express-only presale ended Wed, May 28, at 10:30 am.)
+
Just two years ago, John Fullbright released his debut studio album, From The Ground Up, to a swarm of critical acclaim. The LA Times called the record "preternaturally self-assured," while NPR hailed him as one of the "10 Artists You Should Have Known." The Wall Street Journal crowned him as giving one of the year's 10 best live performances, and the album also earned him the ASCAP Foundation's Harold Adamson Lyric Award. If there was any doubt that his debut announced the arrival of a songwriting force to be reckoned with, it was put to rest when From The Ground Up was nominated for Best Americana Album at the GRAMMY Awards, which placed Fullbright alongside some of the genre's most iconic figures. But for Fullbright, it hasn't been all the acclaim that means the most to him, but rather his entrance into a community of songwriters whose work he admires. Now, as part of our popular Americana Music Series, we celebrate Fullbright's latest work, Songs, released May 27. The arrangements on Songs are stripped down to their cores and free of ornamentation. Fullbright's guitar and piano anchor the record, while a minimalist rhythm section weaves in and out throughout the album. Songs has its moments of darkness, tracks born from pain and heartbreak, but for a craftsman like Fullbright, there are few greater joys than carving emotion into music, taking a stab at that lofty goal of immortality through song. Join us in The Clive Davis Theater for an interview with Fullbright, moderated by Vice President of The GRAMMY Foundation and MusiCares, and performance. Doors at 7:30 pm. All proceeds benefit The GRAMMY Museum. Tickets are $15 and can be purchased in person at the Museum Box Office at 213-765-6803, or online at www.grammymuseum.org.

At the heart of Jamestown Revival is a friendship that spans over a decade. Jonathan Clay and Zach Chance grew up together in the small Texas town of Magnolia. From a young age, they shared a love for music as well as the outdoors. About an hour north of Magnolia TX, there was some old family land with a dilapidated ranch house where they spent the better part of their adolescence. At one point or another, music from Creedence Clearwater Revival and The Everly Brothers, to fellow Texans Willie Nelson, Guy Clark and Stevie Ray Vaughan found its way through an old pair of speakers that sat on the back porch. At the age of 22, they moved to Austin and began to craft a sound of their own. Deeply rooted in harmony, they merged the sounds of the South with classic American and Western rock. Looking for adventure, as well as a change of pace, they eventually made the decision to head west and made the move to Los Angeles. Throughout the course of the next 12 months, they wrote their debut album, "UTAH." It's heavily autobiographical, telling the stories of their adventures, their discomforts and their observations. In order to capture the spirit of the music, the two found a log cabin high within the Wasatch Mountains of Utah. The pair, along with their band and engineer, set out to convert it into a temporary recording studio. With wild moose right outside the window, and aspen leaves spinning in the wind, they tracked the songs for "UTAH" live-to-tape and without headphones. Jamestown Revival is gearing up for life back out on the road with a national tour in May and June.
